In the months between the 2010 midterms and the 2012 general election, all the Beltway press could talk about was the “red wave” and the belief that it meant Repubs were set to repeat two years later. When there was no GQP nominee they’d talk about how Obama was doing poorly against Gene Eric Repub in the polls. Even when Romney took the lead in the primaries and polling showed Obama with a comfortable lead, they promoted any squishy or poorly vetted poll that fit the “horse race” narrative. And when Romney took a short lead in the polls in mid-October, they talked about how Obama was doomed “unless something changes.”
Then he won by 51%+, way above what the last polls had predicted, and the Beltway covered their asses by blaming pollsters and anybody who’d put any real stock in their predictions.

Card is a trained firearms instructor believed to be in the Army reserve stationed out of Saco, ME
According to law enforcement, Card recently reported mental health issues including hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco. He was also reported to have been comitted to a mental health facility for 2 weeks in the summer of 2023.
Last known to be operating a White Subaru Outback with a black bumper with ME plates.

UAW and Ford announce tentative deal to end strike, raise autoworkers’ pay by more than 25 percent
If ratified by a majority of Ford’s union members, the tentative contract agreement would end the United Auto Workers walkout against that company, though strikes continue at General Motors and Stellantis. The Ford deal would include a 25 percent wage increase over the life of the contract, plus cost-of-living adjustments to wages that would boost the total pay hike to roughly 30 percent over the life of the contract.

Unless we are willing to confiscate weapons from those who are currently in legal possession of them, it does not appear that implementing any of those policies would have prevented this tragedy since he likely has long had ownership of the weaponry used in these crimes. I have an old friend who has been an avid gun collector/enthusiast. Former Navy, nice guy, liberal but an absolute gun nut. He has around 66 pieces plus loads of goodies and reloading gear, most quite valuable. Loads of ammo, too. I say that he “has been” collecting since he is sadly reaching the end of the road in his life. Lots of health issues that he refused to address have caught up with him, as it can to too many of us and he is now paying the price.
I have tried to convince him to sell his weapons and gear but he refuses to, for whatever reason. He could use the money more than all the stuff he has collected that is just sitting around collecting dust. He has no heirs to leave them to and no hope of ever using them again but he persists in hanging on to them.
I really don’t understand the mentality. It seems that some love guns more than life itself, which is really sick.

The Czech Republic has a very lively and healthy gun culture, allows concealed carry and yet manages to have multiple levels of gun licensing and requires real training and screening. Nothing in their laws would be in violation of a sanely understood 2nd amendment.

Combine this with requiring a background check for every permanent gun transfer and you’d fix much - not all but much - of the issues in American gun culture. But it would take a willingness unseen since people got tired of the machine gun armed bank robbers and passed the NFA of 1934.

Exactly. If left unescorted it would be tagged, vandalized, or would breakdown in a manner requiring someone to be there to repair and/or cover for it. So officers are tied up escorting a machine that can’t do the job as efficiently or flexibly as a human while tying up considerable resources in the test. (Plus I’m sure the human officers “love” the thing since it’s a pretty direct eventual threat to their jobs and it’s not a useful aid to their jobs currently.)

Indeed we do. Several of my students have firearms and concealed carry permits. And I wouldn’t worry about any of them, because of the rigorous background checks and the need to demonstrate firearms proficiency to the level of a police officer.
There was a mass shooting here about 10 years ago, which you can read about here: en.wikipedia.org - however, such incidents are far and few between. As a side note, police shootings of suspects are also far and few between, because a cop can get in one hell of a lot of trouble if it’s found to be an excessive use of force.

The problem with the older phones is never the hardware, it is the software, planned obsolesence is a pain in the ass. I believe that model stopped getting updates 2 years ago, which could present security issues. At least on a lot of android phones you can install something like lineageOS and squeeze a couple extra years out of it. Not realy an option with apple.

Bottom line, there is a very easy fix for this. A 40-year old CFI and Army Reservist was committed to a mental health facility this summer after telling his superiors that he was hearing voices and having fantasies about shooting up his Reserve Station.
That two week sojourn in the mental health facility was the perfect opportunity to activate Maine’s Red Flag Law and have the local Sheriff confiscate all of Bob’s guns and keep them at the Sheriff’s Office until he was cleared by Doctor’s to handle them again, if that ever happened and to ensure he couldn’t acquire morrr gunzzz.
Just one problem. Maine is a Yee-Haw State. No Red Flag Law. No permit required to buy or conceal/carry a handgun. It’s wide open for incidents like this to occur.
Along with jilted boyfriend/husband, paranoid schizophrenia is a pretty obvious Red Flag. Common sense laws require a Common sense of safety, which the gun manufacturers have been successful in destroying.

Yeah, the Fed wants Goldilocks growth in a narrow range, and will slam on the brakes if it goes over, and will cut rates if it goes below. That’s their primary tool to keep the economy on an even keel.

Whose name do you hear multiple time each day on the news? Dow Jones. People who need that are getting what they need from someplace else, I’m pretty sure. Why don’t they give us the current percentage of unemployed people who are looking for work? They don’t update it that often? Maybe they should.

So, I’ve been looking for a small(ish) phone and I found one. An iPhone SE - a first gen SE, to boot. It’s got a new battery and it cost me the equivalent of $80.
I’ve been using it the past couple days and here’s the kicker - it works better than my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G, which is only two years old. Granted, the camera isn’t the latest and greatest…but I rarely take that many photos anyway. I updated the OS to iOS 15.7.9, which was released last month.
I’m liking it. It’s nice and small when compared to the ever-increasing size of mobile phones. I reckon this one will last a couple of years, more than enough time to save up to get an SE 2022 5G or maybe even a 13 mini or who knows, maybe by then Apple will have some new small mobile device on the shelves.

That’s been my dislike re new and improved *bigger* “Swiss Army Knife” iPhones.
If an upgrade or additional camera function can be added thru software, I’m good.
It’s silly, I know, but I find the “3-lens googly eyed” iPhones repulsive, and uncomfortable to hold. The human hand shouldn’t have to form to follow the iPhones function.
And as iPhones and iPads morph as to size, people are going to have physical finger and hand issues from constantly holding devices that don’t allow the human hand to adopt a relaxed position.
Still using my XS as it was the smallest with the fastest processor I could purchase at the time.

Even the Samsung Flip Z or new Razr are actually pretty damn big once you open them up. The iPhone 12 and 13 mini are about the smallest out there, and the Samsung S23 is fairly compact, too. Like I said, when this 1st Gen SE is simply no longer usable, I’ll look for one of the SE 2022 5G models - they’re not much bigger than the original SE models, and by then, there should be a good selection of affordable ones on the second hand market here.

To clarify: This is by design. Judges know that they are going to get lots of people angry at them with their decisions, and they are public figures. Criticizing a judge is SOP; they even accept that they may get threatened from time to time. But the staff have nothing to do with this; they are just carrying out the orders of the judge.

one or two phones back I had the sony xperia xz2 compact. I loved that phone, it was basically the perfect size I think they still make a compact in the xperia line, I just couldn’t justify the cost when google wanted to give me a pixel 7 for free. Apparently most people don’t agree or more phones would come in that form factor. 5g makes it more difficult as antena design makes it a lot easier to put 5g in a bigger phone.
Just thinking that America makes a whole lot more sense when you remember that the the first two successful colonies - Massachusetts and Jamestown - were founded by 1) religious extremists ran out of both England and the Netherlands and 2) greedy bastards desperate for gold. Everything else falls in line after that.

The argument would be that the entire increase is due to deficit spending which is a trillion dollars more than it was in 2018. Which leads to the question why is the deficit so huge when the economy is ostensibly doing so well. We either need to be raising taxes or reducing spending. If deficits are 1.7 trillion dollars when times are good WTF are we going to do when times go bad again

It’s why, when one of us Lizardim is suffering from a personal tragedy or setback, I don’t tell them, “I’m praying for you.” I say, “If we can be of practical assistance, let us know.” I don’t give a flying fuck if you guys know I’m praying for you or not; that’s between me and God. I grew up in Gary, Indiana, which at least bordered on Lake Michigan, which helped keep smog from building up. But still, when people came to visit and asked “What’s that smell?” our response was always “What smell?”
And when they asked why the sky was that color , we replied “Is the sky supposed to have a color?”
You knew when an east wind was blowing where I was growing up in northern New York. You could smell the sulfur smell from the paper factory on the Canadian side of the St Lawrence River there. It was also a hidden indicator that the fluorides coming out of the stack of the aluminum smelter run by Reynolds Metals was headed in our direction. (IIRC, farmers on the usual downwind side of Reynolds did eventually successfully sue them over that pollution.)
ALCOA had a large smelting operation there as well.* I doubt recall that operation getting as much legal action tossed at it. And that particular plant outlasted both Reynolds and the GM parts plant that operated in the area. All of the big industries in the region are gone now, including the Canadian paper plant. When I was last through the town in 2014 or so a lot of the small businesses were boarded up as well.
* - ALCOA was there in 1907 or so. They actually had a power canal dug between one of the smaller rivers and the St Lawrence to generate electricity for the operation. Everything got larger and the other industries came in during the late 1950s when the St Lawrence Seaway project was done which included cheap hydroelectric power being available in quantity.

When I lived in Ambridge PA we were across the river from the giant J&L Steel plant in Aliquippa. Wind blew the wrong way and we’d get the rotten egg smell from the coke ovens. As an added bonus fly ash would rain down on us.
When my oldest sister married we had a reception outdoors and yeah the fly ash sprinkled down on her wedding cake…

having just completed the long transition to linux, i now have a laptop that hasnt been powered up in 6 weeks.
1TB, enough ram but it’s a bit slow.
i cant figure out how to repurpose it.
a lot of ideas but what’s the point? what to ‘do’ with it?i could make it linux, and it would be faster, but then what?
i dont need a third monitor, and there’s that keyboard in the way..
stream movies? we have a tv
our data is well protected with multi backups and offsite syncing.
photoframe? again that keyboard…the desktop is way faster (and linux, not windows)
i have more disk space than i can ever fill.
and i also have a tablet (first world problems)
My old laptop is retained as backup.

Without any action on my part, the view jumps up a number pages making me manually scroll to the end once again. It’s been happening for several weeks and, while minor, it is an annoyance.

This is because of the embedded tweets. They don’t load right away, and when they finish loading they make the page longer, so if you’re at the bottom before they finish, you’ll end up somewhere above where you were.
But I have a feeling this won’t be an issue much longer because it’s just a matter of time until Musk kills embedded tweets.
