The number of people shot to death in Lewiston, ME tonight is almost or more than the total number of homicides in Maine most years. There were 29 homicides in Maine last year. In 2020, there were 20.
It’s ridiculous. Who in Lewiston, Maine would have enough enemies to gun down 16 people and injure “dozens of others”?
Unless this is the first of Trumper’s attacks on the 2020 election.

Don’t worry, we’ll be told that more than 22 were killed in Detroit or LA or NYC last weekend so why are we making such a big deal about it all happening in a single night in a state where 20+ deaths in a year is the norm?

Always wise, although I have been guilty recently of not following this reasonable guideline.
I live in Colorado. I’m familiar with how “information” gets disseminated DURING events like this. It plays out the same over and over. It’s worse now with Twitter being the nexus for disinformation.

In the months between the 2010 midterms and the 2012 general election, all the Beltway press could talk about was the “red wave” and the belief that it meant Repubs were set to repeat two years later. When there was no GQP nominee they’d talk about how Obama was doing poorly against Gene Eric Repub in the polls. Even when Romney took the lead in the primaries and polling showed Obama with a comfortable lead, they promoted any squishy or poorly vetted poll that fit the “horse race” narrative. And when Romney took a short lead in the polls in mid-October, they talked about how Obama was doomed “unless something changes.”
Then he won by 51%+, way above what the last polls had predicted, and the Beltway covered their asses by blaming pollsters and anybody who’d put any real stock in their predictions.

Looked for some good news.
UAW and Ford announce tentative deal to end strike, raise autoworkers’ pay by more than 25 percent
If ratified by a majority of Ford’s union members, the tentative contract agreement would end the United Auto Workers walkout against that company, though strikes continue at General Motors and Stellantis. The Ford deal would include a 25 percent wage increase over the life of the contract, plus cost-of-living adjustments to wages that would boost the total pay hike to roughly 30 percent over the life of the contract.

Unless we are willing to confiscate weapons from those who are currently in legal possession of them, it does not appear that implementing any of those policies would have prevented this tragedy since he likely has long had ownership of the weaponry used in these crimes. I’m totally on board with removing assault rifles from private citizens but the 2nd Amendment absolutists will prevent that from happening as long as they own the GOP. Of course, these will be no progress in our nation as long as the MAGA-GOP exists.
re: #51 Hecuba’s daughter
If the suspect in the Maine mass shooting incident did in fact spend a couple of weeks at a mental health facility earlier this year (as has been mentioned), then any and all firearms in his possession should’ve been confiscated right then and there on the spot. No exceptions, no excuses.

I have an old friend who has been an avid gun collector/enthusiast. Former Navy, nice guy, liberal but an absolute gun nut. He has around 66 pieces plus loads of goodies and reloading gear, most quite valuable. Loads of ammo, too. I say that he “has been” collecting since he is sadly reaching the end of the road in his life. Lots of health issues that he refused to address have caught up with him, as it can to too many of us and he is now paying the price.
I have tried to convince him to sell his weapons and gear but he refuses to, for whatever reason. He could use the money more than all the stuff he has collected that is just sitting around collecting dust. He has no heirs to leave them to and no hope of ever using them again but he persists in hanging on to them.

GOP proposals to deal with people with mental health issues engaging in mass murder: 1) make sure they can easily purchase military grade assault rifles without undergoing a background check, and 2) deny them access to mental health care.

It’s too easy to buy guns in America.
The GOP believes it is not easy enough, as it is currently working in the courts to allow domestic violence offenders to possess guns, and to allow “ghost guns” (kits of parts that can be easily assembled into functional guns).

The Czech Republic has a very lively and healthy gun culture, allows concealed carry and yet manages to have multiple levels of gun licensing and requires real training and screening. Nothing in their laws would be in violation of a sanely understood 2nd amendment.
Gun law in the Czech Republic
Combine this with requiring a background check for every permanent gun transfer and you’d fix much - not all but much - of the issues in American gun culture. But it would take a willingness unseen since people got tired of the machine gun armed bank robbers and passed the NFA of 1934.
Seriously though…it plays out like this:
Gun Humper: It isn’t a gun problem…it is a mental health problem! We have to ensure mentally ill people can’t get guns?
Sane people: OK, how about a mental health questionnaire and a 72 hour waiting period?
GH: Ridiculous. Law abiding citizens shouldn’t have to wait.
SP: OK. How about a red flag law that allows guns to be confiscated based on signs of mental illness?
GH: No! Due process!
SP: At least we can agree on providing more money for mental health services?
GH: Maybe, but only if there are dollar for dollar cuts to other social services, and even then, no.
SP: Could we set up donation centers that allow people to turn in unwanted guns for destruction?
GH: How insensitive can you be?!? Think of the guns! We don’t do abortions in this country!

Exactly. If left unescorted it would be tagged, vandalized, or would breakdown in a manner requiring someone to be there to repair and/or cover for it. So officers are tied up escorting a machine that can’t do the job as efficiently or flexibly as a human while tying up considerable resources in the test. (Plus I’m sure the human officers “love” the thing since it’s a pretty direct eventual threat to their jobs and it’s not a useful aid to their jobs currently.)

That’s a given. He wouldn’t have been elected Speaker by Republicans otherwise.
So how long will his honeymoon last? He’s got about three weeks to keep the government from shutting down by passing a CR. He’s got a raft of small bills he promised to get through (that McCarthy couldn’t because they need their vacation time). And how long until the MAGA retards feel betrayed by him trying to do his job and having to compromise with President Biden and the Senate?

The Czech Republic has a very lively and healthy gun culture, allows concealed carry and yet manages to have multiple levels of gun licensing and requires real training and screening. Nothing in their laws would be in violation of a sanely understood 2nd amendment.
Indeed we do. Several of my students have firearms and concealed carry permits. And I wouldn’t worry about any of them, because of the rigorous background checks and the need to demonstrate firearms proficiency to the level of a police officer.
There was a mass shooting here about 10 years ago, which you can read about here: en.wikipedia.org - however, such incidents are far and few between. As a side note, police shootings of suspects are also far and few between, because a cop can get in one hell of a lot of trouble if it’s found to be an excessive use of force.

Several Democrats joined Republicans in the 53-45 vote to adopt Kennedy’s amendment that would overturn the requirement that the Department of Veterans Affairs send a beneficiary’s name to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System whenever a financial professional is appointed to help that person manage VA benefits.
Kennedy’s amendment would prohibit the VA secretary from transmitting a veteran’s personal information to the FBI unless a relevant judicial authority rules that the beneficiary is a danger to themselves or others.
Gun-control advocates, including Sen. Christopher S. Murphy, D-Conn., have warned that enactment of the amendment would lead to a surge in suicides among veterans who own firearms.
Democratic Sens. Jon Tester of Montana, Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Jacky Rosen of Nevada, along with independent Sens. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Angus King of Maine, who caucus with the Democrats, voted to adopt the amendment. All have terms expiring in 2025, though Manchin and Sinema have not said whether they will run again.

That said, it looks like they have good carving skills. Those skis may be trash after it though.
Growing up, we would get new ski equipment for xmas every other year or so. The new skis were for good snow days. The old skis became “rock skis” for just the sort of thing these people are doing. And yes…they’re going to be trash at the end of that day.

The problem with the older phones is never the hardware, it is the software, planned obsolesence is a pain in the ass. I believe that model stopped getting updates 2 years ago, which could present security issues. At least on a lot of android phones you can install something like lineageOS and squeeze a couple extra years out of it. Not realy an option with apple.

Longtime LEX 18 anchor Sue Wylie dies following car crash
LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — LEX 18’s first female anchor, Sue Wylie, died Tuesday evening at age 90. Wylie worked for LEX 18 from 1968 to 1998.
Wylie was also the first female anchor in Kentucky.
Lexington police report that around 5 p.m., they responded to a crash involving five cars at Alumni Drive and Chinoe Road. Police say three people were transported following the crash, and one person later died at the hospital.
Wylie’s family confirms she passed away after the crash.
Before arriving in Lexington, the Cincinnati native spent time at local stations WKRC, WLWT, and WCPO, WTVN in Columbus, and WCKT in Miami. Sue excelled in various roles ranging from on-air talent to TV show host.
In 1968, Sue walked into General Manager Harry Barfield’s office and pitched a midday news show. Impressed with her drive and ability, he hired her to anchor and produce WLEX-TV’s Noon Today program, which is still on the air today.
She convinced the station to purchase its first sound-on-film camera for the show. For the next 22 years, she anchored and produced Noon Today, which blew away the competition and for many years garnered a 60 share in Nielsen ratings.
In 1974, Sue again went to the front office to pitch a public affairs program called “Your Government.” For over two decades, Sue produced and hosted the show, which had a “Meet The Press” format with panelists. Through her efforts alone, Sue could land guests such as Ronald Reagan, Jessie Jackson, Nelson Rockefeller, George Wallace, Jimmy Carter, and various governors, senators, congressmen and newsmakers state-wide. The show made state-wide headlines each week, and Sue’s ability to get the tough guests amazed her coworkers and competition.

That two week sojourn in the mental health facility was the perfect opportunity to activate Maine’s Red Flag Law and have the local Sheriff confiscate all of Bob’s guns and keep them at the Sheriff’s Office until he was cleared by Doctor’s to handle them again, if that ever happened and to ensure he couldn’t acquire morrr gunzzz.

Boebert faces backlash over Maine shooting response - and getting the town’s name wrong
‘Pray less. Act more,” was one of the many harsh responses Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) received on Thursday after she extended her thoughts and prayers to the victims of the Maine mass shooting that claimed 18 lives and more than a dozen wounded from gunshot wounds.
The GOP lawmaker, who is facing a serious primary challenge for her seat in the 2024 primary, wrote, “Sending prayers to Lewistown, Maine tonight. Know that the entire country is praying for you.”
That led more than one Boebert critic to point out the shooting occurred in “Lewiston,” not “Lewistown,” writing, “C’mon Boebert. The shooter is still on the loose and you can’t ever get the town name right. Lewiston. Not Lewistown.”
In that vein, another wrote: “Lewiston. Should have stayed in school and spent less time on the gun range or in the backseat of a truck.”

So, I’ve been looking for a small(ish) phone and I found one. An iPhone SE - a first gen SE, to boot. It’s got a new battery and it cost me the equivalent of $80.
I’ve been using it the past couple days and here’s the kicker - it works better than my Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G, which is only two years old. Granted, the camera isn’t the latest and greatest…but I rarely take that many photos anyway. I updated the OS to iOS 15.7.9, which was released last month.
I’m liking it. It’s nice and small when compared to the ever-increasing size of mobile phones. I reckon this one will last a couple of years, more than enough time to save up to get an SE 2022 5G or maybe even a 13 mini or who knows, maybe by then Apple will have some new small mobile device on the shelves.

That’s been my dislike re new and improved *bigger* “Swiss Army Knife” iPhones.
If an upgrade or additional camera function can be added thru software, I’m good.
It’s silly, I know, but I find the “3-lens googly eyed” iPhones repulsive, and uncomfortable to hold. The human hand shouldn’t have to form to follow the iPhones function.
And as iPhones and iPads morph as to size, people are going to have physical finger and hand issues from constantly holding devices that don’t allow the human hand to adopt a relaxed position.
Still using my XS as it was the smallest with the fastest processor I could purchase at the time.

‘He has gone crazy’: Trump launches tirade against New York judge who has him under gag order
Just one day after being fined $10,000 for violating Judge Arthur Engoron’s gag order, former President Donald Trump directly attacked the New York judge on his Truth Social account, which is followed by more than six million of his supporters.
Trump’s rant about the judge overseeing his ongoing civil trial came less than 24 hours after he stormed out of court in response to the fine. Wednesday’s fine was the second recorded violation of the gag order, which Judge Engoron imposed after the ex-president attacked Allison Greenfield, one of Engoron’s law clerks. The first fine was for $5,000, though Engoron didn’t rule out putting Trump behind bars in contempt of court for future violations.
He’s gonna get fined again…

Android devices are far and away the most commonly sold in Czech Republic, and I was looking at some of the latest models at local electronics shops.
Even the Samsung Flip Z or new Razr are actually pretty damn big once you open them up. The iPhone 12 and 13 mini are about the smallest out there, and the Samsung S23 is fairly compact, too. Like I said, when this 1st Gen SE is simply no longer usable, I’ll look for one of the SE 2022 5G models - they’re not much bigger than the original SE models, and by then, there should be a good selection of affordable ones on the second hand market here.

To clarify: This is by design. Judges know that they are going to get lots of people angry at them with their decisions, and they are public figures. Criticizing a judge is SOP; they even accept that they may get threatened from time to time. But the staff have nothing to do with this; they are just carrying out the orders of the judge.

one or two phones back I had the sony xperia xz2 compact. I loved that phone, it was basically the perfect size I think they still make a compact in the xperia line, I just couldn’t justify the cost when google wanted to give me a pixel 7 for free. Apparently most people don’t agree or more phones would come in that form factor. 5g makes it more difficult as antena design makes it a lot easier to put 5g in a bigger phone.

Same story from when I went to college in southern California, where I had grown up. My fellow students were talking about the smog, which I found unremarkable. Then one day, mountains appeared on the horizon, where they’d been hidden 30 miles away. I knew they were there, others were shocked.

You knew when an east wind was blowing where I was growing up in northern New York. You could smell the sulfur smell from the paper factory on the Canadian side of the St Lawrence River there. It was also a hidden indicator that the fluorides coming out of the stack of the aluminum smelter run by Reynolds Metals was headed in our direction. (IIRC, farmers on the usual downwind side of Reynolds did eventually successfully sue them over that pollution.)
ALCOA had a large smelting operation there as well.* I doubt recall that operation getting as much legal action tossed at it. And that particular plant outlasted both Reynolds and the GM parts plant that operated in the area. All of the big industries in the region are gone now, including the Canadian paper plant. When I was last through the town in 2014 or so a lot of the small businesses were boarded up as well.
* - ALCOA was there in 1907 or so. They actually had a power canal dug between one of the smaller rivers and the St Lawrence to generate electricity for the operation. Everything got larger and the other industries came in during the late 1950s when the St Lawrence Seaway project was done which included cheap hydroelectric power being available in quantity.

Second the idea of putting a simple light Linux on it and donating. Ubuntu or Mint and the kids will have all the MS compatible apps they need

So North Carolina is going to the fascists, but we might turn Georgia bluish-purple.
re: #275 danarchy
The argument would be that the entire increase is due to deficit spending which is a trillion dollars more than it was in 2018. Which leads to the question why is the deficit so huge when the economy is ostensibly doing so well. We either need to be raising taxes or reducing spending. If deficits are 1.7 trillion dollars when times are good WTF are we going to do when times go bad again
Sorry every now and then the fiscal conservtive in me needs to escape.
Somebody wants to see us spend more to service the debt than we do on the military budget. Lets see… who benefits? Banks? Bankers? People who lend money?
New GOP speaker: Separation of church and state is only a ‘shield for people of faith’
We Jews love to hear that…we really do…🤬
re: #278 Eventual Carrion
And I know exactly where you are talking about. I went to high school probably about 4 miles from there. I wasn’t there for the event of course.
Hatchling.

maybe god is busy doing god stuff and isnt listening to you
or
maybe god is answering your prayers and actually does want this
or
maybe you’re dialing the wrong number
or
maybe praying doesnt do anything (whether there’s a god or not)
re: #317 Dangerman
or (as Christians would see it)
maybe God is waiting on YOU to be the solution to the problem
re: #254 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
And then around the late 70’s we heard a lot of rhetoric about how “America is a Christian nation!”
Wet dreams of Gilead.
And they elected a president who never attended church.

having just completed the long transition to linux, i now have a laptop that hasnt been powered up in 6 weeks.
1TB, enough ram but it’s a bit slow.
i cant figure out how to repurpose it.
a lot of ideas but what’s the point? what to ‘do’ with it?i could make it linux, and it would be faster, but then what?
i dont need a third monitor, and there’s that keyboard in the way..
stream movies? we have a tv
our data is well protected with multi backups and offsite syncing.
photoframe? again that keyboard…the desktop is way faster (and linux, not windows)
i have more disk space than i can ever fill.
and i also have a tablet (first world problems)
My old laptop is retained as backup.

I always think of this at Halloween. As we’re getting close, why not?

I recall that album getting airplay on the radio* in my youth. And “Forever Autumn” turned up on a Moody Blues greatest hits compilation CD I have since Hayward sang that song.
* - We could just barely pick up an AOR FM station out of Ottawa. It carried a somewhat eclectic play list compared to US pop stations in the 1970s.
I know this is going to be hard to believe, but this nutty announcement comes the day before he is scheduled to speak before a large Republican Jewish group in Las Vegas. Once again, FL state govt being used for Desantis’s campaign. pic.twitter.com/sbytIYeuhh

Apparently Florida has quite the arsenal.
And I guess we don’t really need it if Ron’s giving it away

Boebert should get right on that. /I’ll show myself out.
Gee. This is the second time in as many weeks that I have had someone come to my door to sell me new windows. No thanks.
The manhunt continues.

Are states even allowed to send foreign counties weapons like that?
The Maine mass shooter had a Twitter account. Elon Musk scrubbed it. Why?Here is a list of accounts that the mass shooter visited on Twitter: pic.twitter.com/pdPm2Pjpmh

Has anybody had this issue? I open LGF’s main page, click the article I want to browse. Once it opens, if necessary, I click the current number of responses it contains, and then the Jump to Bottom button. I’m taken to the end but only briefly. Without any action on my part, the view jumps up a number pages making me manually scroll to the end once again. It’s been happening for several weeks and, while minor, it is an annoyance.
Per Thanos’ suggestion:
Windows 11, Chrome
Hm. Maybe try Firefox or DuckDuckGo.
Bonus: Neither of them will track you and add that data to their psych profile of you

I hope the courts go after nole in regard to erasing evidence.
re: #332 No Malarkey!
Gunman told family that he heard voices bashing him at the shooting locations.
From there, his sister:
“Yesterday, as the story was unfolding, we prayed that Rob had nothing to do with this. But when we heard the two places where the shooting happened, my husband rushed home.”
They had a year to get his weapons. I wish that people were embarrassed if prayer is the only thing they can say they did.

I would be interested to know whether the shooter supported Mike Johnson’s election as Speaker of the House. I’m guessing yes. It’s a shame Elon immediately censored the Twitter account of one of his loyal followers, so much for freeze peach.

This is because of the embedded tweets. They don’t load right away, and when they finish loading they make the page longer, so if you’re at the bottom before they finish, you’ll end up somewhere above where you were.
But I have a feeling this won’t be an issue much longer because it’s just a matter of time until Musk kills embedded tweets.

I used to live the aroma of the Kimberly Clark paper company pulp mill when the breeze carried it far enough to smell. Growing up Catholic I always thought it was spelled Pope Mill.
When you’d ask people who lived near the Mead Paper plant in Chillicothe, OH how they could stand the smell, they’d say, “When the smell is gone, so are the jobs.”
