Video: Stunning New Images From the Webb Space Telescope

Science • Views: 10,616

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has taken two new images of the star-forming region NGC 604, located in the Triangulum galaxy, 2.7 million light-years away from Earth.

Sheltered among these dusty envelopes of gas are more than 200 of the hottest, most massive kinds of stars, all in the early stages of their lives. The largest of these stars can have more than 100 times the mass of our own Sun.

How stars are born and how they interact with their environments are two big questions in astronomy today that are actively being studied with the Webb telescope. In this new image, Webb is showing us parts of the story of star formation that we could never see before, revealing more about the universe and our place in it.

March 11, 2020 - The World Health Organization officially declares the then emerging Covid-19 virus to be a global pandemic.

Within 48 hours most indoor public venues around the world are shut down and major sports leagues suspend their seasons. Restaurants close their doors and switch to curbside only, TV and theatre production also grinds to a halt.

Billions of people worldwide are forced into lockdown while they wait on scientists to develop a vaccine.

And an angry orange man in the White House and his sycophants act like nothing at all is wrong…

In the months and years that followed, virtually every person on this planet would have their lives affected by the virus in some way.

As of exactly four years later, Covid has officially killed 7 million people, though the true number of victims is probably much higher due to underreporting.

Happy Anniversary?

AFAICT — it really looks as though reporting in the US is not being maintained — the official confirmed weekly death total is for Dec 31-Jan 6, and it’s been stuck for that period for weeks. But then red states are likely suppressing the information which makes it impossible to have true nationwide results.

re: #236 Belafon

Yay, my son found his keys. Now, while he’s home, I have to see if I can find a relatively cheap place to get a copy of the key.

That is great since some of the key+fobs can cost hundreds of dollars to duplicate.

You might want to consider attaching a Tile, airtag, or other tracker to the keyset. They variously use bluetooth, cellular, and other methods to help locate the tag and what is attached to it. Additionally, some also have a network of other devices that report tag location to a central system.

Tile has worked well for me.

One Tile issue is that I understand that newer Tile unit batteries are sealed and no longer replaceable.

Which is my one concern, keeping it charged. We thought about it afterwards. Maybe they should build something like that into the fobs.

re: #262 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

So I need to hire some movers, and I’m checking online for reviews and…

… I find myself wondering if the reviews I am reading are real or were generated by bots using AI.

We’ve reached that point, and it’s a bit scary.

I understand that there are a number of OnLine Review analyzers. I have not verified which are useful, but have seen a number of commenters using them when researching various services and products.

For services there are also some places that provide useful reviews. In the Washington DC area, I use Washington Checkbook. (They are also in the Bay area iirc.)

Also Angies List, although I take that with a grain of salt. On the other hand, they did get me a refund when a service provider did not end up providing me the promised service.

For my research, I find that word of mouth is best. The free listings, like Yelp, have always been quite uneven, but seem to have gone downhill in the past few years. Nextdoor, as mentioned, has been helpful if I know the reviewer. Otherwise, I tend to have some skepticism.

Second generation Toyota Prius cars had a.method called the “Chicken Dance” that allowed keyfobs to be programmed. I used it when I picked up a spare key fob off of Eprey. So its possible to program a keyfob without needing specialized equipment.

I can sympathize with that.

I have an older Tile model and it uses replaceable CR2032 batteries. Probably once a year or so. I don’t know if some current models still permit that. I usually replace the fob (which also uses the 2032) and tile batteries at the same time.

My version Tile does alert me via cell phone notification with low battery status.

Btw, the packaging from the Duracell batteries has the note “Compatible with Apple AirTag” on it.

And there are beginning to be competitors entering the market. Which I have not researched.

LONDON — Catherine, Princess of Wales, said Monday that she had been the one who altered an official photo that was retracted by global news agencies over concerns that it had been doctored.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” Catherine said in a post Monday morning. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. This is why I am a cranky old lady who wants a good old metal key that will open at least the driver’s side door and can be used to start the engine. And doesn’t need a battery. And can be copied cheaply. And can’t be hacked. The fancy fob is fine as a supplement but not if it is the only way to make the car work. I also don’t need to start the car when I am not in it, I don’t care how flipping cold it is. Several possible ungood scenarios with that.

Our 2007 Forester doesn’t have a keyhole on the passenger’s side door, so we have to hope the interior lock/unlock mechanism never fails. Windows don’t have cranks anymore so you’re up the creek if the button fails. The fancier things get, the higher the Murphy risk.

North Carolina Republicans Pick QAnon Weirdo To Head Schools

Will Jim Carrey drinking children’s blood be on the test?

Media Matters’s Eric Hananoki recently uncovered social media posts from the Republican nominee to be state superintendent of public instruction in North Carolina, Michele Morrow, which appear to show she’s deep-in for QAnon. Like “Jim Carrey harvests and drinks the blood of children” deep.

wonkette.com

Natch, Morrow is also Moms For Liberty-endorsed, and homeschooled her own five children, because public schools are “socialist indoctrination centers” where children are forced to learn “transgender theory.” Her work experience is serving as a missionary and a nurse before becoming a “Grassroots Activist.” She ran for the school board in 2022 and lost. But she knows how to re-Tweet LibsOfTikTok, and that is apparently good enough for 52 percent of the fine Republican voters of the Tarheel State.

Her other beliefs: Joe Biden is “Resident Biden” instead of “President Biden” because the election was stolen. (Get it?) She attended January 6 and brought her children to this wholesome family activity, though she claims they didn’t go into the Capitol. She thinks public school teachers should carry firearms, she’s called gay people perverts and special education students “retards,” and thinks the US should “ban Islam.” Very patriotic, very cool.

What motivated me to add a Tile was when I couldn’t find one of my keyfobs. (I always carry both original keyfobs.)

The last time I remembered having it was when I drove to a restaurant. So I went back and retraced my steps and even checked the restaurant and where I had been sitting.

About a month later I found it in my study where it had fallen out of my pocket and bounced under some furniture. Grrr…

Being a belt-and-suspenders type of guy…

I added a keychain with a hook to connect to a pants belt loop on one pair. (“Dummy cords” always worked quite well for me.) And Tiles to both keyfobs just in case.

The nice thing is if I have a keyfob I can use it to locate my cellphone. And do the same with my cellphone to locate my keyfob.

I also gave a set to the lady I was dating at the time. She had a tendency to misplace both phone and keyfob. (Her used car only came with one keyfob.) The second tile had a place of honor on a known coat hook by her front door. That way if she couldn’t find both keyfob and cellphone, she could use the extra Tile to locate them.

From last string (thought it might be important):
re: #353 Scottish Dragon

That would take monumental stupidity to blatantly call for rape when Hamas’ leadership has been denying that rape happened on Oct 7th (despite copious evidence that quite a lot of rape did happen)

Propaganda relies on motivating your own followers by promoting your virtue and promoting the malfeasance and evil of your enemy. This does the absolute opposite of that to cartoonish effect. Basically WE ARE EVIL AND LET’S DO ALL THE EVIL.

Rape is what you really want to accuse your enemies of. I’ve never, ever seen any propaganda leaflet before that called for defiling the women of an opponent from the past 120 years. That’s a sort of thing you used to entice mercenaries in the 30 Years War. Somebody is screwing around and playing with fire.

Francoist general Gonzalo Queipo de Llano, who commanded Moroccan troops during the Spanish Civil War, did not issue pamphlets calling for rape but he certainly supported it on radio, a medium he was noted for using.

Our brave Legionaries and Regulares have shown the red cowards what it means to be a man. And, incidentally the wives of reds too. These Communist and Anarchist women, after all, have made themselves fair game by their doctrine of free love. And now they have at least the acquaintance of real men, and not milksops of militiamen. Kicking their legs about and struggling won’t save them.

Mohamed Mizzian was another Francoist commander who did nothing to hide his tolerance for rape:

After the battle for Navalcarnero American historian John Thompson Whitaker wrote that among the Spanish Republican prisoners were two young militia women that Mizzian personally interrogated, after which he handed them over to his men. When Whitaker expressed his concern about the fate of the girls he “attended horrified in helpless anger” when Meziane stated that the two teenage women “will not live more than four hours” once at the hands of his troops.

The Left seems to have a bigger presence there as well. A good way to spurn that desperately needed youth vote is to take away one of their favorite mediums. Conspira-liars are mass murderers; many of them, I suspect, deliberately so. Nobody should be shocked at this. Conspiracy claims were an important element of Third Reich Propaganda, perhaps the most important, after all. Before that, the Czarist secret police concocted the Protocols of the Elders of Zion back in the 19th century and all en compassing conspiracy claims were a staple of both White and Red propaganda during and after the Russian Revolution.

What The Hell Is This Asshole Saying?????

Ron Johnson: ‘We’d be far better off if we never passed another piece of legislation’

During a Monday interview on Real America’s Voice, Johnson was asked about a bill that temporarily funded the government.

“You know, internally here, inside the bubble, you hear Republicans say, you know, we need to get a result,” Johnson complained. “You know, we need to effectively govern. To me, that’s almost code words for we’ve got to do Democrat-lite.”

Johnson said he preferred a version of conservatism that believed “we have to stop this madness.”

“So there’s a fair amount of stopping that’s being required here, and I think we’d be far better off if we never passed another piece of legislation,” he remarked. “Obviously, you’ve got to fund the government, but we need to fund it at a far lower level.”

as if i dont have enough to do, we’re going down a new rabbit hole with our attic/crawl space vent fan.

i wanted to install a solar powered one with a thermostat but mrsdm wont let me go up there any more. it’s low, cramped and 120 degrees so yeah. plus the on the roof parts. and i dont want to bring someone in for this.

there is an on/off switch in our dining room. it’s ganged with an outlet about 1 foot off the floor - where you’d find an outlet. it’s an odd place. but it’s on the same wall and under where the fan is so that makes some sense. i’m guessing it’s original but i dont know.
what’s the problem? it’s quiet and i forget it’s on so it runs for three days.

are you with me so far?

next best solution is a smart switch that i can program on/off and seasonally. i dont need the wifi, but any switch with a programmable clock needs a neutral wire because the clock et al needs constant power even when the switch is off. So why not an android compatible.

so i’ve been learning what to look for and i’m pretty sure the box has a neutral, even with the age.

if it doesnt work, it’ll be obvious and i can put it all back the way it was.

in the next few days, if you see a puff of smoke near a pond …

Midjourney Accuses Stability AI of Image Theft, Bans Its Employees

Apparently, MJ is now in conflict with Stable Diffusion developer over image theft. Ironic.

“…It is claimed that employees from Stability AI infiltrated Midjourney’s database and stole all prompt and image pairs, an action that also caused a 24-hour outage. In response, MJ reportedly banned all Stable Diffusion developers from its services, a move supposedly disclosed internally within the company on Wednesday.”

this is aligned with that idiotic “all legislation should expire in 5 years” nonsense.

ffs, everyone wants to cut government spending except for the parts they want.

we used to agree on how ‘the system’ worked
what the job of legislating was
everybody got something they wanted
nobody got everything they wanted
right-sizing the government with a side of pork to keep the wheels greased

with these bozos, now everybody gets nothing and nobody gets anything

Remember Alan Simpson (R-WY)

“If you can’t learn to compromise on an issue without compromising yourself, you sure as hell should never be in the legislative body. Every document of this country was a compromise. Go home and bitch and raise hell around the city council or something. Go haunt someone else. But you should never come to Congress. And you should never get married.”

“If you want to be a purist, go somewhere on a mountaintop and praise the East or something. But if you want to be in politics, you learn to compromise. And you learn to compromise on the issue without compromising yourself. Show me a guy who won’t compromise and I’ll show you a guy with rock for brains.”

this is not the politics of spite.
it’s the politics of non functioning government

that’s their real goal - to make it not work at all

And here we go as Trump turns the RNC into his personal piggy bank!

Bloodbath at RNC: Trump team slashes staff at committee

politico.com

Dozens of staffers are expected to be let go.

In a letter to some political and data staff, Sean Cairncross, the RNC’s new chief operating officer, said that the new committee leadership was “in the process of evaluating the organization and staff to ensure the building is aligned” with its vision. “During this process, certain staff are being asked to resign and reapply for a position on the team.”

The overhaul is aimed at cutting, what one of the people described as, “bureaucracy” at the RNC. But the move also underscores the swiftness with which Trump’s operation is moving to take over the Republican Party’s operations after the former president all but clinched the party’s presidential nomination last week.

They’ll do a tax cut because that’s what their patrons ask for, and they’ll shovel money into internal state terror…in the forms of militarized cops, broader mandates to abrogate our rights, and lots of privatized carceral systems, because that’s what their patrons want.

They will or will not blow people up overseas on the basis of what the fossil fuel and mining industry wants.

The dirty secret of Donald Trump is that his agenda gets enacted precisely to the degree it’s what rich people are already asking for. His random brain splatter ideas that contain even an ounce of populism die on the vine.

If Biden signs a bill to ban TikTok, I fear this will actually benefit the GQP. Young voters love TikTok….hell, voters in their 30 and 40s love TikTok. The Left seems to have a bigger presence there as well. A good way to spurn that desperately needed youth vote is to take away one of their favorite mediums. Call me paranoid, but this smells like a trap. The GQP will simultaneously blame Biden for banning TikTok while taking credit for the bill.

Being worried about “China” having access to kids through an app is a joke when every single app on the market (1) is attempting to create even further social media addiction in kids, (2) sells data.

The entire concept of a market for personal data make a farce of the notion of privacy from government agents, because anything that’s purchasable on an open market is just one middleman away from being controlled by a state.

Also…if America’s chasing TikTok for touching China and not Twitter for touching the KSA, then our “it’s not actually the principle” slip is showing again.

Trump sides with a Chinese company (Tiktok) over a US one (Meta/Facebook).

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee and ex-U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday told CNBC he fears that banning Chinese-owned social app TikTok would only serve to empower Facebook, which he labelled an “enemy of the people.”

Speaking Monday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Trump said that “there’s a lot of good and there’s a lot of bad” with TikTok, but that banning the platform could effectively help Facebook, which is owned by Meta, double in size.

Trump’s view on TikTok contrasts with that of incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden, who has said he would sign a bill to ban the app, if Congress passes it.

‘Like the Nazis did’: Critic slams Trump plans to remake US education system

In two separate videos on Trump’s little-noticed “Agenda 47” website, the ex-president details his vision to take millions of dollars away from the endowments of private colleges and universities, through lawsuits and fines, as retribution for some students he suggests embraced Hamas after it attacked Israel. Those millions of dollars would be used to create an entire new federal government university system which, Trump vows, would be entirely non-political: no “wokeness” would be allowed.

Trump claimed colleges and universities are “turning our students into communists, terrorists, and sympathizers of many, many different dimensions. We can’t let this happen. It’s time to offer something dramatically different. Under the plan I’m announcing today we will take the billions and billions of dollars that we will collect by taxing, fining, and suing excessively large private university endowments, and we will then use that money to endow a new institution called the American Academy.”

Trump also announced plans to entirely eliminate the U.S. Dept. of Education, allowing states to keep those funds so they can determine what and how children should be taught.

“Rather than indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual and political material, which is what we’re doing now, our schools must be totally refocused to prepare our children to succeed in the world of work and in life and the world of keeping our countries strong,” Trump declared. “Right now we’re living in a failing nation because Joe Biden and these people running it, that Marxist that communist what they’re doing to our country is incredible.”

Trump claimed, “we will ensure our classrooms are focused not on political indoctrination but on teaching the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. Reading, writing, math, science, arithmetic, and other truly useful subjects,” “we will teach students to love their country not to hate their country like they’re taught right down,” and, “we will support bringing back prayer to our schools.”

maga laws that violate the 1st amendment do not survive court challenges

Under the terms of the settlement, the Florida board of education will send instructions to every school district saying the Florida law does not prohibit discussing LGBTQ+ people, nor prevent anti-bullying rules on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or disallow Gay-Straight Alliance groups. The settlement also spells out that the law is neutral - meaning what applies to LGBTQ+ people also applies to heterosexual people - and that it doesn’t apply to library books not being used for instruction in the classroom.

The law also doesn’t apply to books with incidental references to LGBTQ+ characters or same-sex couples, “as they are not instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity any more than a math problem asking students to add bushels of apples is instruction on apple farming”, according to the settlement.

Update: coming to you from my laptop as my data migrates from 8 year old iMac running El Capatan to my brand new iMac. I literally learned this wireless data migration was a thing a few nights ago right here. Imagine what a caveman I feel like watching my machines doing something that I didn’t even realize possible this time last week.

Anyone have any tips for best practices to get up and running post-migration? I have a lot of time to think about it now.

Also, why does every new iMac include fewer & fewer ports? I certainly don’t need the thing to be thiner at this point!

Yeah, you’re going to need more ports, that was my first purchase after the iMac. There are a ton of options for USB-C hubs, but try to get a hub that supports Thunderbolt 4 for the best speed possible (40GB/sec), and check if it supports external displays if you need/want a second monitor.

OWC has several options.

Did you get the four port model?

Apple presumes you just need two Thunderbolt ports to get something done, plus two additional USB 3 ports for legacy stuff.

There are lots of TB hubs out there.

It’s mostly squirrels at this point, we have a few weeks before the potato buns start popping up. Sort of spoils the effect when two (or one) furry ears stick up from your rock disguise.

You got me curious about this. After all, the only Biden Cabinet Secretary to leave before this was Marty Walsh, Labor Secretary. (Unlike tfg, whose cabinet was a rotating clown show of firings and resignations.)

She committed last fall to to staying on through the rest of Biden’s term. But has since changed her mind.

According to the NYT:

NYT: Fudge Steps Down as Housing Secretary

My heart goes out to all those concerned about and caring for elderly parents.

Ms. Fudge, 71, a longtime congresswoman from Ohio, attributed her decision to a desire to spend more time with her 92-year-old mother

yep, given what we’re dealing with now with my 93-year-old mom, I totes understand.

Memories of when Pop-Tarts were first introduced…

There were four original flavors when they were introduced in 1965—Blueberry, Strawberry, Brown Sugar Cinnamon & Apple Currant. Kellogg’s severely underestimated the initial demand and all the supermarkets in the Pittsburgh area quickly sold out of them. Shoppers were demanding them so much that the stores had to put a card in their windows telling shoppers if Pop-Tarts were or weren’t in stock. When they were stocked people were buying half a dozen boxes at a time. Got to where the stores had to limit sales to 2 boxes at a time. I remember what a madhouse it was at the local A&P! People were lined up a couple hours before it opened to buy them…

I just took off my vax bandaid. It’s a foam circle with a light (translucent) plastic cover. This gives weight to my theory that Dr. Pharm put the bandaid on first, then gave me the shot (I can’t watch, but I was pretty nearby). That’s new to me. Of course, if I never watch, my opinion is worthless. The bandage is new to me. It’s always me who removes them.

Sounds like an interesting bandage, anyway!
Husband and I got our old-coots-extra spring boosters today and all they gave us is classic little white ones with the Kroger logo. Fooey.

Moderna this time, after straight Pfizer up till now. Arm is sore but no major reaction that I can separate from the usual Spring Forward disorientation. But hubby has jury duty on Wednesday and we’re planning a trip in April, I’ll take all the extra precautions I can.
