That’s a mostly American problem…and becoming less so in communities that are making bike lanes more visible (green paint) or putting bike paths next to the road. I can get downtown (5 miles) without getting on Highway 1 at all except to cross it at a light. Granted, I do that in my Ram 1500, but I COULD do it on an e-bike…I just couldn’t take the dogs with me.

Green is for going between the right-turn lane and the going straight lane, it is for going straight without being killed by a right turning vehicle. Visibility is good, but the green lane has that specific use. Unless the various states each have their own rules.

More Re Long Covid:

Director of the Institutes of Health (NIH), Monica Bertagnolli, states that Covid is a chronic infection and that they believe this is the cause of Long Covid disease much to the surprise of Dr Faust from the Medpage website interviewing her…

Faust: I just want to follow up on something you said a moment ago about where this virus can be found in tissues. Are you suggesting that long COVID is actually, the mechanism of that, is persistent live virus in humans?

Bertagnolli: We see evidence of persistent live virus in humans in various tissue reservoirs, including surrounding nerves, the brain, the GI [gastrointestinal] tract, to the lung.

Faust: OK. And you’re saying this goes beyond the PCR’s [polymerase chain reactior test] ability to get it in a regular swab so that we are missing chronic cases of SARS-CoV-2?

Bertagnolli: Correct. The virus can persist in tissues for months, perhaps even years

Faust: OK. I think that’s certainly one theory, but I’m not sure that that’s settled. Is that fair? I mean, there’s one thing between people who are autopsy, they died of viral sepsis, as opposed to people walking around. Is there a distinction there?

Bertagnolli: Our emerging data shows that the virus can persist into tissues in the long term, and I think that’s really critical because it does help us think about possible ways to combat it, one being better antivirals. I think there’s a lot of focus on developing new antivirals as a possible way of preventing long COVID, and the other might be more aggressive treatment with antiviral therapy upon initial diagnosis.

Disclaimer: I’ve been involved with an AI startup for about a year.
IMHO she’s mostly off base on AI. It is already incredibly useful in some domains, and will only become more so as time goes on. The comparison to block chain is off base. Block chain is an interesting idea looking for legit use cases. AI can help accelerate many things that are already being done. It’ll increase productivity by more than office PCs did.

Machine learning (ML), a subset of AI that enables computers to learn from training data, has been highly effective at predicting various types of cancer, including breast, brain, lung, liver, and prostate cancer. In fact, AI and ML have demonstrated greater accuracy in predicting cancer than clinicians.

I had a deep cleaning done to my teeth the last two Tuesdays. My dumb ass went way too long without visiting the dentist and I paid some serious stupid tax because of it. The procedure is not that bad, the only thing that’s even remotely painful (this is after you’re given the topical) is the needle with the anesthesia into the front gums. Then I just listened to music while the hygienist did her thing, and it’s remarkable how good my teeth and gums look. Next, a trip to the orthodontist. Turns out getting braces in your early 50s is much more common these days.

Most states consider cyclists to be vehicles, with the same rights and responsibilities, and a few more restrictions. In Oregon, a cyclist has the right to use any road, except freeways when they are in urban areas. The rest of the places, freeways are OK.

By a fluke of neighborhood geography, we are located 1 mile from a hospital/medical complex, two large groceries, and a slew of restaurants and such. At our age, an electric 2-seater trike is starting to look attractive if there is an affordable one out there. In a narrow sense it’s what computers are.
What word processors are
Spreadsheets
Cad/cam
databases
Other applications..order processing a/r, a/p invoicing inventory, tax,
On and on

Automate the repetitive, remove a lot of error-prone parts. Do the same tasks with less people, faster and with better control, allowing the remaining users to function at a higher level.

The potential of AI is so huge, that it almost doesn’t matter what the motivation is. One constant of computer tech is that stuff gets cheaper and more powerful over time. I’m typing this on a phone that’s more powerful than the world’s most powerful computer a few decades ago.

Pretty much everyone has a smartphone. For $20/month (a fraction of the average cable bill or cell bill) you can get access to ChatGPT plus, which gives you access to GPT 4 Turbo, one of the most capable models available today.
API access pricing is getting cheaper, and this trend won’t stop.
The tech will only get better and will be available to virtually everyone.

And we’re still at the barely crawling stages of this.

AI is just dumb as fuck. I’m sure it will likely get better, but it doesn’t seem to be “learning” anything that I can see. Essentially what I’m doing is helping a LLM sound like it knows what it’s talking about so that it can answer questions from people without hallucinating about stuff. That’s not intelligent. That’s just something that’s proficient at running a con.

Lebron James makes almost six times that much money per game.

Lebron James also probably gets watched by 200 times the number of people that a pro women’s game will draw. The women need to do like pro women’s soccer and build significant public interest so that somebody offers the league a billion dollar, 5-year deal, rather than the paltry amount they’re currently contracted for.

Which model are you using?
With either Anthropic’s or OpenAI’s better models, it’s fairly easy to eliminate hallucinations if you restrict the answers to be based on the content of some documents that you provide (RAG approach). If you’re trying to fine-tune a model using RLHF then you’ll have a tougher time.

AI isn’t yet at the point of the automatic camera setting that takes nearly perfect pics most of the time. You still have to tweak the dials to make it do what you need, and there is a bit of art involved as well. Different models have different peculiarities.

Make fun of the unemployed people. Tell them to switch to service sectors jobs or “be enterpreneurs” in the gig economy.

Propose that maybe they have a cultural problem and don’t deserve help as they cycle into privation and despair.

I’m mean, that’s what happened when they shuttered all the national industry in England: blame the Northerners now signing up for the dole for not being agile and hungry enough, question whether they were trying hard enough to find new work. It’s also what’s happened in coal country in my state; it’s in the background of the horror of working homeless in California, too. Hollywood writers went on strike because they could envision a future in which they were never hired to be a writer, but only got a few hours of gig work cleaning up an LLM generated script that was based on their past work.

The worship of work has always been paired with a basically-eugenicist understanding of individual worth: If you’re not making it, it’s you’re fault and no one has to care, in fact caring is to the detriment of society in general. A lot of folks have internalized this, and actively work against labor rights and safety nets because they view “no handouts” as a moral issue. I see no reason that’s going to change.

My quick search says:

“…In captivity, elephants sleep 3 to 7 hours at night, lying down for 1 to 5 hours at a time and getting up to feed between naps. But in the wild in their natural surrounding the elephants rested for only two hours, mainly at night. The elephants in the wild sometimes went up to 46 hours without sleep while walking far distances to avoid threats such as lion or human poachers. African and Asian elephant still manage to lie down to sleep, both are sleeping on their sides for long periods, or take a nap while standing, leaning against a tree for support.”

So the third episode of Ari Wallach’s documentary is out:

Once Upon a Time Episode 3

What can I say that I have not already said?

In this episode Hayhoe explicitly mentions that (in the US anyway) those who want to mitigate against climate change dare not argue that Americans will have to do with less.

This of course flies in the face of reality.

We have to consume less.

But if that is a politically impossible message, then what we’re left with is inevitable disastrous climate change.

Her kind of activism has completely surrendered to consumerism.

Wallach’s premise in this episode is that human society works by telling ourselves stories.

I guess I can’t argue with that.

But he misses, probably intentionally, the corollary: we also tell ourselves fantasies.

Wallach wants to believe that if we just change the narrative on what the future will be then our future is going to be dandy.

No dystopian stories for him.

And a part of the episode is explicitly showing clips from dystopian cinema masterpieces.

His belief is based on a fallacy: that the reason we are facing ecological crises is because we’ve told ourselves the wrong stories.

But it makes him feel better to believe that if he tells positive stories of the future then the future will be better.

In my view the only way to have a future that avoids great crises is through hard work and sacrifices.

And by sacrifices I do not mean killing people (as humans have done in the past) but buying, and expecting, less.

But I guess that is not popular enough to sell.

Personally I don’t go for such things, but I’m also not a big tuna fan.

Hell, call up Subway, I’m sure if you can sell it to them cheap enough they’ll buy lab-grown tuna by the tanker-full. Also, limiting the compare / contrast to the NBA vs WNBA misses one fairly large recent data point.

The final game, between South Carolina’s Gamecocks and the University of Iowa’s Hawkeyes, averaged about 18.7 million viewers and peaked at a whopping 24 million combined on ESPN and ABC, making it the first time in history that a women’s final has drawn a larger TV audience than the men’s, according to ESPN.

In contrast, the victory of the men’s Division 1 UConn Huskies over Purdue averaged 14.82 million on TBS and TNT.

But it’s not the only sports glass ceiling that was crushed; Sunday’s game was also the most-watched basketball game, either men’s or women’s and college or professional, since 2019.

I’d rather go Vegetarian.

Heck, I’m almost there now.

Most of the animal products I now consume comes from cow’s milk.

Ah, how could I have forgotten “Impossible Meats” and other purveyors of plant-based meat substitutes that rely heavily upon genetic engineering and other tricks to create faux burgers and other “meats” for vegetarians who want to scratch that particular itch.

The reality is that Soylent Green is slowly becoming reality, the reprocessing of “cheap” foods and even lab-grown proteins into ready-made meals is the future. So long as inflationary forces continue to outpace wage growth for much of the population, there will be a ready market for “cheap” foods whose relation to “real” meat is sketchy at best.

Back in the 70s, I ate at a Seventh Day Adventist restaurant in Loma Linda, Ca. Everything was vegetarian, but most items had something masquerading as meat. It was the least food-like stuff I ever ate.

Only just under a million. As we said, Kaitlyn will start at $76,000. Now, I am too young to know when men’s basketball became big, so I’m not sure what era would be most comparable to women’s basketball now.

Russell made $24,000 his rookie year, which would be around $275,000 in today’s dollars. That was 1957—hard to really rate/compare the popularity.

But when you see what today’s NBA rookies are making this kind of money, Kaitlin is getting royally screwed.

First pick: Victor Wembanyama, $10,132,300. Second pick: Brandon Miller, $9,065,600. Third pick: Scoot Henderson, $8,141,200.Jun 23, 2023

Isolationists were around before WW2. The answer is we go through and around them.

Isolationism pretty much crumbled after Pearl Harbor, with the only argument offered by the hardcore adherents being about the priority of defeating the Japanese Empire versus the Third Reich. There were some that thought we could defeat Japan and reach a negotiated peace with Germany, but they weren’t the diehards pre-war who argued that America should stay within its cozy borders and let the rest of the world tear itself apart while we watched.

It’s not a workhorse, it’s a show horse. And just like a show horse, you’re not meant to actually do anything with it besides stow it in a covered shelter, pamper it to the maker’s exacting standards, and take it shows in a special trailer or on a dry and sunny day so that others may admire the otherwise useless hunk of scrap that you spent a king’s ransom to saddle yourself with.

Show horses work hard. They train 6 or 7 hours a day, seven days a week, for YEARS before they ever enter a show. Besides the physical work they do every day, there’s the massages, the special food, the grooming, the companion goats, the pampering is to keep them mentally strong and emotionally secure enough to truly believe they’re better than the other horses and deserve to win…

Two German-Russian nationals have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of plotting sabotage attacks, including on U.S. military facilities, in an effort to undermine military support for Ukraine, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Authorities have searched the homes and workplaces of the two suspects, who are accused of working for a foreign secret service, the German prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

One of the suspects, identified as Dieter S., had since October 2023 discussed possible plots with a person linked to the Russian secret service, the statement said.

Germany has become one of Kyiv’s biggest suppliers of military aid since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, and is a major target for Russian spying operations, authorities have said.

Dieter S. had been prepared to carry out bomb and arson attacks on military facilities, including those operated by U.S. forces, the statement said, adding that he took photos and videos of military transport and equipment.

According to Spiegel magazine, the facilities included the Grafenwoehr army base in the southern state of Bavaria where Ukrainian soldiers receive training to use U.S. Abrams tanks.

Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine
Meltin’ in a pot of thieves
Wild card up my sleeve
Thick heart of stone
My sins, my own
They belong to me, me
People say, “Beware!” But I don’t care
The words are just rules and regulations to me, me
I walk in a room, you know I look so proud
I’m movin’ in this here atmosphere
Well, a-a-anything’s allowed
Then I go to this, here party but oh, I just get bored
Until I look out the window, see a sweet young thing
Humpin’ on the parking meter, leanin’ on the parking meter, oh
She looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
And I got this crazy feeling, and then
I’m gonna ah-ah make her mine
Ooh, I’ll put my spell on her
Here she comes, walkin’ down the street
Here she comes, comin’ through the door
Here she comes crawlin’ up the stair
Here she comes in a pretty red dress, in a pretty red dress
And oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
And I got this crazy feeling that I’m gonna ah-ah make her mine
I hear this knockin’ on my door, knockin’ on my door
And I look up into the big tower clock
And say, “Oh my God, it’s midnight!”
And my baby is walkin’ through the door
Layin’ on my couch, she whispers to me and I take the big plunge
And oh, she was so good, ooh, oh, she was so fine
And I’m gonna tell the world that I just ah-ah made her mine
I said darling, tell me your name, she told me her name
She whispered to me, she told me her name
She told me her name, she told me her name
She told me her name, she told me her name
And her name is, and her name is, and her name is
And her name is

G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria, oh Gloria
It was at the stadium
Oh, twenty thousand girls called their names out to me
Marie Ruth, but to tell you the truth
I didn’t hear them, I didn’t see
I let my eyes rise to the big tower clock
And I heard those bells chimin’ in my heart
Going ding-dong ding-dong ding-dong ding-dong
Ding-dong ding-dong ding-dong ding-dong
Calling the time, when you came to my room
And you whispered to me and I took the big plunge
And oh, you were so good, oh, you were so fine
And I’ve got to tell the world that I made ya mine, made ya mine
Made ya mine, made ya mine, made ya mine, made ya mine
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
When the tower bells chime
Ding-dong they chime
I said that Jesus died

This year’s Fourth of July picnic for the Kennedys is gonna be…..awkward.

The Kennedy family is set to endorse President Biden in his reelection campaign on Thursday during an event in Philadelphia, a strong rebuke of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent White House bid.

The Biden campaign is expecting 15 members of the Kennedy clan to attend Thursday’s event alongside the president. Kerry Kennedy, the younger sister of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will deliver remarks outlining her family’s support for Biden.

“President Biden has been a champion for all the rights and freedoms that my father and uncles stood for,” Kerry Kennedy will say, according to excerpts provided by the Biden campaign.

“I can only imagine how Donald Trump’s outrageous lies and behavior would have horrified my father, Robert F. Kennedy, who proudly served as Attorney General of the United States, and honored his pledge to uphold the law and protect the country,” Kerry Kennedy will say, directly invoking her father. “Daddy stood for equal justice, human rights, and freedom from want and fear. Just as President Biden does today.”

After the endorsement, Biden and the Kennedys in attendance will join local volunteers at a grassroots organizing event, where they will participate in voter outreach that includes phone calls and door knocking.

Reactor grown meats and fishes are in their infancy. It’s a brilliant method to use fewer resources to grow animal flesh for consumption. The big issue is see is if they can create growth structures to make the other organoleptic characteristics match “real” animal flesh. Right now,, the technology is making flesh-mush, the end-goal is to create more useful whole cuts.

I’m having more fun with this watching how various states are trying to ban this technology (at least sales of it) and other aspects of things that are federally regulated. If states start banning certain food because feelings, and it is upheld in the courts, there’s is going to be a food price increases and shortage; large companies are not going to taikor make different formulations for different states. And this startups are rare except for bespoke, high-profile niche items.

Heroes walk among us.

A Taco Bell manager in Bucks County is being hailed as a hero after she sprang into action to save a baby’s life.

It happened on Saturday at the Taco Bell drive-thru in Richboro, Pennsylvania.

Natasha Long said she had just come from picking up a prescription at a local pharmacy with her 11-week-old son, Myles, when she decided to stop at Taco Bell to get some food.

When she pulled into the drive-thru, Long said she heard baby Myles struggling to breathe, so she immediately got out of the vehicle to check on him.

“I ran out of the car and ran around and opened the car door,” said Long. “I pulled him out and he turned completely blue and was lifeless. At that point I just completely blacked out. I didn’t know what to do.”

Long says she started to scream in a panic. Her cries for help were heard by Taco Bell Manager Becky Arbaugh, who dropped everything she was doing to help once she realized how dire the situation was.

“I threw my headset. I ran outside,” explained Arbaugh. “I took the baby and I started to do chest compressions on the baby and then he finally started to breathe.”

Oopsy. Probably toxic Cuomo.

State officials are investigating a major cyberattack on the government agency charged with drafting state budget bills.

The investigation comes as the Legislature and governor are finalizing the details of the $237 billion state budget.

“It was unexpected. The 4:30 a.m. call said the commission that’s responsible for legislative bill drafting was under attack,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in an interview with NY1.

Hackers attacked the Legislative Bill Drafting Commission — the primary system used to print the final version of Hochul’s state budget.

“It’s under an active investigation. So we’ll be disclosing as much as we can when we’re able to, but this is very active. There were impacts, but we’re still very much functioning,” Hochul said. “This is, right now, confined to the legislative bill drafting commission. It’s actually run by appointees from the Speaker and the Majority Leader. And it’s an independent commission, to my knowledge, that is the extent of the attack.

Lawmakers shared their initial reactions.

“Well, the timing is very suspicious. No question. Although, there’s no evidence yet to link it any way to the budget or the closing down of the budget,” Democratic State Assemblyman David Weprin said.

“I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself, wondering, ‘everyone’s hating the budget?’ Because it’s that type of year. The more it gets delayed, the more everybody gets unhappy,” Democratic State Assemblywoman Pat Fahy said.

Although the incident appears contained, Hochul did not confirm whether the hit qualifies as a ransomware attack — a situation where hackers hold private data hostage, and often request large sums of money for their return.

“If this is a ransomware attack and the attackers have communicated with them saying ‘pay us,’ then the question becomes: do you pay them? If you do, you get the data back instantly but it may not come without embedded malware,” Michael Balboni, who served as the State Power Authority’s chair of the Cyber and Physical Security Committee, said.

New York ranks third nationwide for the most ransomware attacks, according to a state comptroller’s report released last year. Attacks on critical infrastructure nearly doubled within the first six months of 2023.

The stuff of nightmares right here. Watch the video.

Boston Dynamics unveiled Wednesday a new version of its humanoid robot, “Atlas,” that the company says is “designed for real-world applications.”

Like many of its previous announcements, the company released a video of its robot in action.
The company is moving full steam (or spark) ahead with its new fully electric iteration of Atlas, and retiring its previously hydraulic-powered model.

At the core of the transition is Boston Dynamics’ partnership with Hyundai — which the company credits for aiding in, “building the next generation of automotive manufacturing capabilities,” according to Boston Dynamics’s blog post.

“In the months and years ahead, we’re excited to show what the world’s most dynamic humanoid robot can really do — in the lab, in the factory, and in our lives,” read the company’s blog.

However, beyond the nuts and bolts of the robot’s new design, the release left many on social media sputtering with skepticism. Some users on X likened the launch of Atlas to something out of James Cameron’s iconic post-apocalyptic “Terminator” franchise.

“It’s giving ‘call an ambulance … but not for me,’” joked tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee.

Make no mistake, this trial is going forward, and opening statements are likely to as early as Monday (with 2 day break for Passover), or Thursday. This is happening, and Trump’s insane claims and statements before and after being in the courtroom show that he knows he’s fooked, and all he has is railing against the process, which has bent over backwards to be accommodating to this corrupt, criminal, and repeat offender of various gag orders designed to protect those working in the courthouse, court officers, witnesses, and the judge. If this was anyone else, including mob bosses, they’d be hauled into Rikers to await trial because of violating those gag orders would have actual consequences.

khou.com

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Office also issued a press release about this ruling. They are calling it a win for them as well.

The plaintiff’s attorneys were surprised by that release.

“The Texas AG sent a release saying he won this case, but what Texas wanted was to not be sued under the 5th Amendment,” said McNamara. “What the Court said is that Texas can be sued under the Fifth Amendment. That means we won because we got what we wanted and Texas lost because they’re the ones getting sued.”

Wisconsin official blames homelessness on “sin,” then votes against aid for the poor

Jeff Weigand, a conservative Christian, said before his vote that sin was the “root cause” of homelessness

And what does this “born again Xtian” do? You guessed it folks! Just like the real god he worships, Ayn Rand, he flips the bird to the needy.

On April 4, the Dane County Board in Wisconsin (which includes the city of Madison) proposed giving a $231,005 grant to Porchlight, a non-profit organization that helps the homeless by providing them with shelters, food, access to telehealth, and more. Seemed like a no-brainer. In fact, only one board member, Jeff Weigand, stood up to oppose the proposal.

He explained that his problem was that Porchlight wasn’t addressing the root cause of homelessness, therefore this grant was just putting a short-term bandage on the wound.

“For every dollar that we invest in providing someone a temporary place to sleep,” he said, “we should be investing an equal amount, or putting an equal amount of energy, towards finding solutions towards the root cause.”

There was a follow-up from fellow supervisor Anthony Gray: What do you think is the root cause of homelessness?

Weigand, clearly expecting this question, responded with a smile: “Sin.”

When non-profit news outlet Madison365 asked Weigand to explain his callous thinking, he told them his own church (which he refused to name) helps the poor and addresses sin.

He also casually pointed out that the help is not unconditional. Anyone who wanted food, clothing, or housing assistance had to learn about Jesus first.

The memory remains.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has revealed a new tattoo in memory of late rocker Lemmy — using some of the Motörhead star’s ashes.

Hetfield, 60, showed off the tattoo — featuring Motörhead famous “Ace of Spades” logo — made with “black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me.”

Fittingly, it was on the middle finger of his right hand, making it visible while pulling his idol’s favored pose of flipping the bird.

“So now, he is still able to fly the bird at the world,” wrote the Metallica star of his “salute to my friend and inspiration Mr. Lemmy Kilmister.”

Any journalist publishing identifying information about the jurors is committing a serious ethical breach, and compromising the trial itself. And no, you can’t fall back on, “well this info is available in the juror packets” or whatever other weak sauce you’ve used to rationalize it so far.

Sounds like maybe two jurors are being excused - #4 may have been arrested for tearing down political signs in the past.

As for the seven additional violations of the gag order in the last two days, Trump’s lawyers say they were ‘political speech’ - I’m not sure how posting an attack on a witness (albeit on a campaign website) skirts that issue…nor do I see how spreading conspiracy theories about jury integrity does either. Prosecutors are the ones who did the research and came up with a possible match with various criminal acts by someone with the same name, including tearing down political signs, and a possible deferred prosecution deal, as well as a possible corruption case. Defense agreed that this person might not be a good juror.

There’s already a hearing scheduled to deal with Trump’s incessant violations of the gag order, and he should get slapped with sanctions. He is not above the law, and the judge should hold him to the same standard as every other defendant in the NYS criminal justice system who violates gag orders - plural. He keeps violating them, and should end up in jail for his misconduct.

SRSLY: if this asshole’s church wants to make listening to sermons a condition of giving help to the homeless or hungry, well, that’s their perogative: “free exercise of religion”, and all. But Dane County, WI isn’t a religious organization: they have no business foisting sectarian proselytizing on the public.

I’m not at all convinced there are that many people on the left who want that, to be honest. Again, I’m not trying to offend anyone with my opinions, but it seems like the whole culture of “criminals deserve to be abused/raped/shanked” is so pervasive across all of American culture. It’s like we’ve grown up with generations of people who have made jokes about the awful conditions in our prisons, such that people all along the political spectrum have become desensitized to the consequences of unfair prosecutions. And yes, all this only marginally relates to the problem of the rich and powerful not having to endure these things, but it does relate. Rather than bringing them down to that level, I’d rather the poor Black men suffering in prison under unjust laws or prejudiced cops receive better treatment from the justice system. That’s why I don’t think there’s many on the left who share my ultimate vision.

This comes up periodically in cases of a sensational nature - going back to OJ Simpson (both times he went on trial for criminal acts - the double homicide and later armed robbery charges in Nevada). Serial killers. Mass shooters. White collar criminals like Bernie Madoff. They all get lots of press and much is made of the problem of finding a jury that can be impartial.

Yet every time we manage to get a jury that is impartial. We’ll get one here as well. It make take longer than some to get a jury seated (though it still looks like that’ll happen this week). But it will happen.

More. Vastly more. And far more likely to get people to act on his words/intent.

It still wont stop a jury from being seated though. The courts will get a jury seated. They have accounted for quite a bit of this, including bringing in far more to be in the prospective jury pool, and even having a larger than average number of alternate jurors who will be seated in case the regular jurors get dismissed.

re: #276 lawhawk

This comes up periodically in cases of a sensational nature - going back to OJ Simpson (both times he went on trial for criminal acts - the double homicide and later armed robbery charges in Nevada). Serial killers. Mass shooters. White collar criminals like Bernie Madoff. They all get lots of press and much is made of the problem of finding a jury that can be impartial.

Yet every time we manage to get a jury that is impartial. We’ll get one here as well. It make take longer than some to get a jury seated (though it still looks like that’ll happen this week). But it will happen.

And more recently, the Murdaugh trial:

… started from a much wider pool of people on Jan. 23. A total of 900 people were called as potential jurors in the case and by Jan. 24 it had been whittled down to around 150, with further eliminations taking place one-on-one in judge’s chambers. The jury selection process revealed just how connected the Murdaugh family and its law firm were around the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and how highly publicized this case has become, with a many potential jurors being excused for a potential conflict of interest.

A jury of 12, and six alternates, were selected on Jan. 25 and sworn in for the Murdaugh trial.

greenvilleonline.com

So, two days to seat the jury (and 2+ hours to find him guilty)

My preference is Portobello sandwiches.

The other day a friend and I were talking about food. She has been staying away from meat for almost a year now. She has lost quite a bit of weight and is feeling good. She mentioned mushroom sandwiches. I have never tried it that way, tho’ I put mushrooms on/in a lot of things.

Complaint Asks the FBI to Probe Trump Claims on a $50 Million Loan

A watchdog group is asking the Justice Department to investigate whether Donald Trump repeatedly lied in sworn statements to the federal government—including his own administration—about a $50 million loan that apparently never existed in the first place, and which could be evidence of tax evasion.

The criminal complaint, filed on Thursday by watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington and first obtained by The Daily Beast, asks the FBI and the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Unit to probe whether Trump “knowingly and willfully” lied about the mystery loan on his personal financial disclosures.

Trump has filed nine of those annual statements with the Federal Election Commission and the Office of Government Ethics over the years, personally swearing to their accuracy, which could expose him to criminal liability if the claims are found to have been intentionally false.

The difference here is that one side is actively threatening jurors; they definitely don’t want an impartial jury.

Technically, neither side wants an impartial jury. The state would love it if they could load the jury box with anti-Trump New Yorkers who would vote in a New York minute to convict him. But the state, at least, doesn’t try to directly intimidate jurors into voting to convict, or else. However else the criminal process is stacked against the defendant, at least they have that going for them.

Reporters are mad that their own reporting has caused the judge to constrain what they can say. Gee, dumb shits, maybe if you didn’t report on jurors in a way that exposes them to the stochastic terrorists on the rabid right, you wouldn’t find the judge handing down a gag order on you.

See? No problemo.

If they want to get into personal details, they could speculate whether Trump is using Juvederm in his face to make his cheek bones look a little more prominent, and the rest of his face a little less saggy.

Also I think sequestered jurors get a small stipend for their services.

Sometimes there’s simply no other choice. The jury was sequestered for some eight months during the O.J. Simpson trial, another infamously high-profile case.

In this case, where the defendant is a former President and has a legion of violent thugs at his disposal, I’d strongly recommend sequestration.

Because “withdraw from NATO” isn’t a thing that started with Putin, it’s a thing that reactionaries have been saying for a very long time because they think we should have unilateral relationships where we’re bullying everyone into doing what we want.

From what I have seen, AI is not more than another tool for repetitive tasks or maybe data analysis. Even in those areas it is very limited and lightyears away from where people imagine it is.
