US Army Exonerates Sgt. Bergdahl of Collaborating With the Taliban

A lie, traveling around the world
US News • Views: 26,298

You may recall a report on Fox News by James Rosen (supplied to him by an Iran-Contra figure convicted of lying to Congress), alleging that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl converted to Islam and became a “jihadi” while in Taliban captivity.

You may also recall that Fox News simply stopped pushing the story almost immediately, which really isn’t like them. Normally Fox will milk every last drop of outrage from a story like that, carrying on for weeks.

Well, there may be a reason why it surfaced so briefly and then vanished beneath the right wing waves — because the US Army announced yesterday that Sgt. Bergdahl has been exonerated of misconduct while in captivity.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Army said Wednesday that there is no evidence that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl engaged in any misconduct during his five years in captivity.

[…]

Some soldiers who served with Sgt. Bergdahl speculated that he had helped his captors while being held, but Army officials said Wednesday that there is no indication that he did so. “We have no reason to believe that he engaged in any misconduct” during the five years he was held captive, said one Army official.

Bergdahl is still facing investigation for leaving his post in the first place, but it’s clear that the “became a jihadi” story was an unmitigated smear. Fox and James Rosen certainly knew their source was disreputable and untrustworthy, but the point of these smears is just to get them out there in public and let the right wing mob continue repeating them ad infinitum.

The Bowe Bergdahl affair really illuminated the blind hate the right has for President Obama. First he’s leaving a soldier behind, then they say Obama should have just left him there.

Alouette put up a political cartoon recently. Obama could announce that cancer has been cured and the right wing would still smear him.

7 Justanotherhuman  Jun 26, 2014 4:30:53pm

The gist of it: “Some soldiers who served with Sgt. Bergdahl speculated…”

In this case, more like a 24 day rule or however long it takes the Army to investigate.

That amendment was passed on a wave of anti-gay paranoia formented by Karl Rove to get conservative reactionaries out to the polls to get G.W. reelected. Certainly one of the more shameful things Colorado voters passed.

SCOTUS punted last year on gay marriage. It will most certainly have to be relitigated and a definitive decision will need to be made.

From the military press release it looks like they my talk to the other soldiers in his unit again
Official: Initial Bergdahl Investigation Was Inconclusive

To the extent that the investigating officer believes that there are gaps in those statements or additional questions that need to be asked,” the official said, “he may reach out to witnesses that have already given statements and re-interview them.”

The investigator for the 15-6 investigation has not yet interviewed Bergdahl, the official said, and that won’t happen until Bergdahl’s reintegration process is complete. Typically the subject of the investigation is not interviewed until the end, the official noted.

An interview with Bergdahl could happen “in a couple of weeks,” the Army official said.

My ice maker pours too much water into the tray. It overflows into the bin and forms a solid chuck of ice that will not fit into my drink glass. Every time it does it, it pisses me off. Rather than fix it, I just get another drink.

Allen Ginsberg’s Howl (1956), William S. Burroughs’s Naked Lunch (1959) and Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957) are among the best known examples of Beat literature.[2] Both Howl and Naked Lunch were the focus of obscenity trials that ultimately helped to liberalize publishing in the United States.

Some of the worst memories I have were of men’s attitudes toward women in the ’50s. These guys weren’t much different, even if Burroughs and Ginsberg were known to be gay (maybe because of it to some extent—they pretty well ignored women), but they were “cool” for the time. Remember, this was before women woke up in the 60s.

Yeah, it’s interesting to see how they were products of their time. Even the much lauded Twain wouldn’t pass muster today for political correctness. I always find it interesting to see how people really were rather than the mythologized version that exist in pop culture. Even the older hippies here in Portland have a lot of attitudes that would shock many as out dated. So it goes.

2 grams $35. Kinda pricey compared to the black market, but it’s taxed. Actual price before taxes was $22.65. State tax plus $5 to the town made it $35.

The town of Eagle gets $5 for every recreational weed transaction. They’ve pulled in thousands of dollars with that tax without a doubt.

Medgar Evers was on TV and the white people were pissed. “he was a marked man”

Finally, Evers was granted time to respond, on May 20, 1963. He spoke for 17 minutes, beginning by telling his audience he was as an U.S. Army veteran who fought fascism and Nazism in Europe during World War II. He talked about a 40 percent black city of 150,000 residents that had no black police officers, firefighters, or clerks. He called for a black man being able to “register and vote without special handicaps imposed on him” and “more jobs above the menial level in stores where he spends his money.”

I love pot, even though I don’t smoke it regularly anymore. I like to treat it like a cocktail. Just enough for a light buzz, but I still want to function. It’s actually better than alcohol. In a few years, when I feel like I’ve got everything in my life in the right place, I’ll probably start smoking it again.

I also love mushrooms. And I read an interview with Bob Weir where he said he still takes them from time to time when he’s at a jam session and the younger guys he’s playing with are taking them. That’s fuckin’ awesome. But those, too, I’ll save for said rainy day.

You just reminded me of an art teacher I had in college. He passed some years ago, Lud Stromeyer was his name, RIP. He had pretty bad glaucoma and he treated it with weed. Dude just reeked of the stuff everywhere he went. I can remember walking back to my apartment after class and he’d go to his minivan and just puff away for about 10 minutes. It was legal for him in those days as Colorado passed medical pot laws in 2000. IIRC he was one of 4 people in that whole county who were legally allowed to possess and use cannabis.

Would MJ be haram if it was ingested orally rather than smoked?

In the next few years there’s going to be some awesome breakthroughs with ingested cannabis. Families with kids who have awful seizure problems are moving to Colorado and finding that THC (the active ingredient in MJ) in very small doses can alleviate and sometimes prevent seizures in these children. Hell, even Sanjay Gupta saw the light with regards to MJ’s medical properties.

179 ObserverArt  Jun 26, 2014 7:32:17pm

klys,

If you are around or happen to come back to read the thread…I saw you mentioning hooking up a new ‘fridge.

It might be too late, or you may have already done it, but did you install an inline charcoal water filter on the line to your ice maker? They make them, usually they look like a big tube with small outlets on both ends. Usually about 1.75” round and 10” or so long. They have the compression fittings on them already to take the 1/4” copper feed line.

They really help out. They make clear cleaner ice. And the big benefit, they keep the salts and other sediment out of the small plumbing and mechanical parts of the ice maker. I swap mine out about every two years or so, and my ice maker has been faultless for close to 20 years.

And that reminds me, I do need to be getting a newer one for better energy use. So, whatever happens to the one I have, it still has a great ice maker.

Just something to consider.

180 klys  Jun 26, 2014 7:33:27pm

re: #179 ObserverArt

The new ones have them built in to the fridge, and the water for the icemaker is run through the filter beforehand.

But I appreciate the heads up. :)

Gosh, remember hash oil? sigh

Actual hash was my favorite when I could get it, which for a short period, about 1970-72, there seemed to be a lot around where I was in NC. Those little foil packets friends would have…didn’t take much.

You can buy syringes of hash oil for you digital pocket vaporizer at your local cannabis boutique in Colorado.

Seriously folks, it’s pretty surreal, even for a stoner ski bum like myself.

I use a vaporizer instead of smoking these days. I would love to be able to get some of that.

For medicinal purposes, of course. : )

Live in OK now, to be near my Muslim community.

I will ask my Imam on this, because I do intend to move east at some point.

Gonna leave this over here since the other thread is still new.

Later, lizards.

It has not gone away.

I do not know where a friend of mine got it, but he had one of those e-cigs that was filled with a hash-like oil and the e-cig turned the oil into vapor. I’m not sure what they cost, but they work. Actually, it worked too well. I don’t smoke much anymore, and only at night after work, etc. A relaxant. And I like to have that time to also think creatively about design, art, music. Anyway, I tried it at a cookout at his place a couple months back. The first drag brought more than I was expecting and it had that old expansion thing going on. I was lit in a hit. You gotta go easy I guess.

Modern science. I can only think what they will make if it becomes legal everywhere.

The new ones have them built in to the fridge, and the water for the icemaker is run through the filter beforehand.

But I appreciate the heads up. :)

Cool. Are they real easy to get and to change then?

Yep, stoners have that shit down to a science. I actually like the really potent stuff, what I like to call one-hit-quit. I get my desired effect with much much less smoke.

I prefer it be weak… I like the ritual, and the taste, and I want to be able to smoke many multiples of bong hits while slowly ramping up the effect.

This might be going out on a limb, I don’t know, I’m not religious. Maybe tell you Imam this: “Allah created cannabis, it does grown naturally upon this planet. Men created alcohol. Who do you trust?”

Like I said, that might be pushing it, I don’t know specifically what Islam says about drugs.

Matter of fact, I’m clueless as to what almost all religions say about drugs. I only know about the LDS church (Mormons forbid all “intoxicants”, even caffeine!).

He will tell you it’s haram because it’s an “intoxicant”, no doubt, just like alcohol.

Yep. Front and center, between the veggie crispers.

There is no point trying to recall the tainted red meat, the hyenas gobbled it all up.
