Brett Kavanaugh and the Cruelty of Male Bonding
When being one of the guys comes at a woman’s expense.
By Lili Loofbourow

“…These male witnesses universally remember nothing. Now, it’s possible they don’t remember because it never happened. Maybe they were too drunk to recall. Or maybe they’re tapping into a long tradition of male in-group protection, partly to avoid being implicated themselves. Mark Judge remembers nothing so much that he’s gone into hiding—his first and only comment to the journalist who tracked him down was, “How did you find me?” The other men Ramirez says were in the room at Yale also have “zero recollection.” It could be there’s just nothing to remember, but there are other possibilities, like a mutually exonerating code of male secrecy. Brett Kavanaugh is on the record instructing his buds to keep Omertà after a 2001 boat trip to Annapolis, Maryland—even from their wives. “Reminders to everyone to be very, very vigilant w/r/t confidentiality on all issues and all fronts, including with spouses,” he wrote after apologizing for a variety of things, including “growing aggressive after blowing still another game of dice.” By this time he wasn’t in high school. He was in the White House.”

This. Getting drunk and performing for his buddies, at the expense of women. Teenage boys do it, I’ve seen it, and, to my shame, laughed at it. When you’re performing for your buddies, the women don’t really matter as people. They’re like NPCs in a game.

Ah, the Protestant Slump.

I remember when my sister got married. The groom’s side were all Catholic, whereas the bride’s side were all Protestant (Sis converted to Catholic). When the priest said, “Let us pray”, the groom’s side all hit the kneeboards, and on the bride’s side all the chins dropped to chests.

I’d never been to a Catholic church. Until they prayed, I had no idea what those things were for. I thought, “Footrests?”, which seemed a little relaxed for a church.

It’s all part of Putin’s ploy to Make Russia Great Again. Greatness is relative — and since he cannot compete economically (as China seems to be doing), he must damage every other nation so that Russia is the last one left standing intact.

No — they are not coming to grips with their problems; their goal is to use whatever tool they have available to win, not to make any real changes in their behavior or policies. They got their tax cut, now they are headed to get their justice.

We always knew the hearing was a formality, something they threw together just to check a box on the list before moving Kavanaugh over to the SCOTUS bench. If they really gave a damn how it looked, they would have delayed until an investigation was conducted.

A Democratic staffer noted that there are rules on bringing in outside counsel. A person at a law firm would have to quit his or her job to do the questioning ― the individual could not take a leave of absence and could not do it pro bono.

Politico has a survey of over 50 Latinos in Florida. The Trump approval ratings are… interesting…

Overall, he’s 47/50 favorable/unfavorable (32% very favorable, 43% very unfavorable). Among US born Latinos (which I assume includes Puerto Ricans) he’s 42/58 (28/51 on the verys). Foreign born Latinos though are 54/43 favorable (36/34 on the verys). And not shocking at all, among older Cubans he’s got 66/31 favorable (44% very favorable).

Of course, the Cuban numbers match up almost exactly to the Republican numbers, so I shouldn’t be too surprised.

I just want go on record as saying I’m a Christian and I DON’T support overturning Roe v. Wade.

The amazing thing is, even though prolife/prochoice tends to poll around 50/50 in this country, support for overturning Roe is only at about 28% (64% oppose overturning it), and hasn’t been higher than 35% since the 1980s. That means there’s a lot of Christians who don’t support overturning the law.

Really, I think as a nation, we don’t know what we think about choice. When you ask specific questions, the numbers seem to be all over the place.

He’s close to the McCains. And the McCains would very much like to see Trump embarrassed.

Staying on Cindy and Megan’s good side might be more important than pleasing Grassley or McConnell.

Kyl was selected months ago to shepherd the nomination through the Senate. No way he’s going to vote against Kavanaugh. OTOH, if something really unexpected happens during the hearing or a devastating and credible revelation is reported, it’s possible Kavanaugh may withdraw his nomination.

Apparently, I’m in a mood to read polls. The latest out of the California 39th has just some classic responses:

How closely are you following the election:
Very closely 15%
Somewhat closely 36%
Not too closely 49%

Trump approval/disapproval: 47/47 (remember it’s a Republican leaning district that voted for Clinton)

Most important issues:
Immigration policy 23%
Health care policy 22%
Gun control policy 15%
Abortion policy 7%
Tax policy 14%
Job creation policy 12%

Approval of the GOP tax plan:
Strongly approve 19%
Somewhat approve 18%
Somewhat disapprove 12%
Strongly disapprove 27%

(hold for laughter)

My favorite scene (or in this case, shot) is when Corleone meets with all the heads of the five families in the boardroom at the hotel. Corleone states that he wants to make the peace, and when Tattaglia agrees, it cuts back to a low-angle shot of Corleone’s hands raising as Barzini’s eyes quickly go from Tattaglia to Corleone. It’s absolutely brilliant camera and editing work.

Yep. Honestly some of my favorite acting in the whole series and this is because I love meta-acting (acting within acting) G.D. Spradlin as Senator Geary, the politician we see talking at Anthony’s First Communion mispronouncing the Corleone surname and the real Geary behind closed doors who can pronounce Corleone correctly. I’ve seen the series a lot so I no longer focus heavily on the Corleones but other characters like Geary. Al Neri, etc.

You know….for something called ‘presumption of innocence’, it tends to end up being treated as ‘projection of guilt’ instead. Kavanaugh’s ‘presumption of innocence’ hinges on casting guilt upon his accusers as liars, cons, and extremists all, as well as the immediacy of such counter-accusations. It’s the same bullshit that gets flipped when a PoC gets shot down by someone in a position of power, and the law ends up turned on its head and putting the dead on trial to preserve the ‘presumption of innocence’ of the accused. It really is never ‘innocent until proven guilty’. It’s just ‘slut until proven pure’. ‘Black until proven human’.

I never saw what impressed them so much about her. My memory of her is her bragging about her keeping the unions down in South Carolina. That one amuses me since my grandfather, a labor arbitrator no less was quoted in an article in the mid 60’s when Unions had much more influence than they do now about how Unions were slow to develop especially in states like SC. Plus she’s someone who got her start in part to Palin and I don’t like guilt by association but that means something and Jen ignores one big big thing- Republican voters love Trump. ‘Traffic’ here is 5 cars at the stop light. It’s the only place I have lived that has decreased in population. Town and county, but not state.

Sometimes, creeping along in stop-and-go traffic on 101, I think back to when my Mom would take the Battlefield roads to go around the outside of Gettysburg, so she could ‘avoid all the traffic’ of going through town.

The most pathetic thing is people like Inhofe who spread this shit about Soros are bought and paid for by people like Adelson, the Mercers, and Kochs. Marco Rubio was almost wearing a “Property of Sheldon Adelson tag” on his ass in the primaries.

I hate the Republican politicians as much as anyone.

But the reason Marco Rubio can get away with acting like he is not equally bought and sold is no one holds him responsible for the claim and checks to see who is giving money to him.

In other words the real problem in American politics is the American people.

They are the ones that buy Soros is some evil Democratic money machine and completely ignore willingly someone like the Kochs or Alderson.

The same people bought Trump and still buy his con job.

That is our problem.

Politicians do it because they can. You can only go as far as someone lets you. And Trump has set a new example and now the Republicans are more bold and mouthy than ever.

I suppose the Spanish influence in California is to blame—although the ignorance of Spanish in the last one militates against that. It seems to this English speaker that the Romance languages overuse the definite article to the point that it’s completely lost its force.

I don’t blame people as much for “the hoi polloi”—Greek isn’t as familiar as Spanish. But that’s the same as “the El Camino”.

I really think we’ll look back at CU as that decision that really made things suck. Politicians should be accountable to the voters not some shadowy millionaire or billionaire. My big problem with Roberts’ majority opinion in CU is the strict implication some speech means more than others. I would have frankly admittingly felt more comfortable with the decision if labor were on a more equal playing field like it used to.

I mean I guess as someone who has done party politics, maybe I do a little get why they want to save it but there seems to be no introspection about why they’re here even by some of the most party critical ones like Ana or Jen. Jen I don’t think wants to admit Romney whom she championed played a big role in why the GOP is such a xenophobic shithole. And Ana worked for Jeb who wasn’t exactly great either with his signing legislation banning gay couples from adopting and his actions with Terri Schiavo and what’s more Ana I believe was working for Jeb at that time, Jen was just someone boosting Romney, I don’t think she’s ever actually been on an elected person’s staff.

Exactly. And I have to say - harsh as this may sound - that I’m getting sick and tired of people (politicians, pundits, etc) saying “we are better than this.”

Really?

62 million Americans responded to “Love trumps hate” with “Yes, we do.” 62 million Americans love what’s happening now. They love the racism, they love the bullying, they love the corruption, they love the misogyny and the death threats and the children in cages because durr hurr herp derp OWN TEH LIBZ!!!1!!!

And as long as those people are coddled and enabled and empowered, America is not “better than this.” Unless things change drastically after the midterms - as Childish Gambino says - this is America.

Every type of Republican in some way sees their movement as the heirs of Ronnie in some way. No one has the balls to admit that it’s a different era and that maybe Ronnie wasn’t all that anyhow.

And I’ve traveled far more than many of these people. Their idea of a tough guy is a 12 year old watching an action movie. OOOOH HE TALKS SHIT, HE MUST BE TOUGH! When the real tough guy is that quiet guy who doesn’t wear his emotions on his sleeve but knows how to get shit done when he needs to. When HW Bush was the Navy’s youngest fighter pilot in WWII, no one knew he was the son of a very wealthy businessman. The making of Donald Trump who quite honestly is one of the wimpiest men I’ve ever seen into an American bad ass amuses me. You don’t need to serve in the military to be bad ass mind you but you do need a quiet dignity about you which Trump has hever had.

Good luck!! My nephew and I were down in Puerto Vallarta for 6 weeks this summer; medical treatment seemed good and the costs were a fraction of here. He unexpectedly needed an EKG and was worried about the cost — turned out it was only 400 pesos (about $22).

Even leaving aside the fact that electing Donald Trump to the US Presidency has “lowered the bar” to bottom-of-the-Marianas-Trench level, that still (IMHO) doesn’t make Nikki Haley all that attractive as a candidate (for anything). Maybe it’s because her usual response to serious questions mainly seems to be a deer-in-the-headlights stare?

That’s exactly what I’m trying to say.

Off topic, but…
TIL: The background to why I was raised not to withhold help when it is in my power to act. Finnish Criminal Code, 21st chapter:
14 § A person who renders another helpless or abandons a helpless person in respect of whom he or she has an obligation of care, and thereby endangers the life or health of said person, shall be sentenced for abandonment to a fine or to imprisonment for at most two years.
15 § A person who knows that another is in mortal danger or serious danger to his or her health, and does not give or procure such assistance that in view of his or her options and the nature of the situation can reasonably be expected, shall be sentenced for neglect of rescue to a fine or to imprisonment for at most six months.

Oh, how timely. Locally. A woman I know, in great distress, tried to kill herself late one night last week by pills. She ended up on her yard, having nearly bit her tongue in two, unconscious and bleeding. Her… man cohabiting, I’ll say, came out the next morning, stepped around her and went to work. Her son found her a few hours later, and she is safely in hospital. Has a long recovery ahead. But there are a number of us in this small community that would like to do something to charge that creature with who just walked away. Not sure if anyone else in the really tiny (<100) town saw her, and did likewise. Disgusting.

When Disaster Capitalism Comes for the University of Puerto Rico

As the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) begins a new semester, its future is anything but certain. Hurricane María dealt a blow to its infrastructure last year; now, both the federal and local governments seem intent on further damaging the island’s public-university system rather than repairing and strengthening this crucial asset for Puerto Rico’s socioeconomic development. In a territory with soaring poverty and unemployment rates, students face a 100 percent increase in tuition alongside the elimination of the waivers traditionally offered to athletes, choir members, and other students providing services to the university—all at an institution that for over a century has been the island’s main channel for upward mobility.

The ongoing bid to reduce Puerto Rico’s government spending—what the non-elected Fiscal Board appointed by the federal government euphemistically calls “right-sizing”—threatens not only the UPR’s autonomy but its very existence.

The situation in the UPR is more depressing every day.

SRSLY? Nikki Haley is a sort of Chauncey Gardner of Republican politics: not much of a record, little to recommend her, no real “talents” other than being a faithful GOP drone, and generally not (politically) slipping in puddles of her own vomit. That, and being a “model minority”, of course. And she shows up (which, unfortunately, counts for more than it should).
Yet somehow, this run-of-the-mill party hack keeps getting mentioned ever and anon as some sort of Great Republican Hope For The Future. Bleccch.

Those traits of Nikki are all positives compared to many a Republican politician.

So, she is a good candidate due to the fact she isn’t as horrific.

This reminds me of this year’s budgetting process at my workplace. There was a machine we wanted. It costs $300,000. We got turned down.

Last week, another company came by to hawk a machine that does the same kind of thing (and a lot more) for $2 Million. I said we should tell the Big Boss we want one, and when he flips out, reluctantly settle for the $300,000 machine.

But I don’t think he’d bite. Not his first rodeo.

Good luck!! My nephew and I were down in Puerto Vallarta for 6 weeks this summer; medical treatment seemed good and the costs were a fraction of here. He unexpectedly needed an EKG and was worried about the cost — turned out it was only 400 pesos (about $22).

If we survive the Trump disaster and get a solid Democrat into office in 2020 (and a Democratic Congress before then), you may be able to return here. And certainly, once you are eligible for Medicare, the medication will be affordable again.

Thanks. Without Obamacare, my insulin will be $800 per month. Versus $120 in South America for the exact same product in the exact same pen made by the exact same company. Americans are getting hosed, and they don’t care because “insurance”. But if “insurance” wasn’t so damn expensive they would get a bigger paycheck (we’d love to give you a raise but health insurance went up again).

Of course, the Republicans have their eyes are Medicare next. I may never return.

Why the hell are they so set on Kavanaugh? A few reasons I think. Kavanaugh is the one that has written the book on protecting the executive at all costs. Hardimann or Barrett or any of the other finalists may actually show some independence on Trump abusing his power. Secondly, they feel this is their horse and they’re going to stay with the horse as long as they can. Thirdly, Kavanaugh is one of them. This is someone who was a Republican/right wing operative for much of his career until W gave him his current job. And finally, I really don’t think they fucking care about the accusations. We saw Rep. Cramer who is running for office’s comments. We see how Mitch and Grassley want to rush this. They don’t care about rape victims and they sure as shit don’t care about ones that were assaulted by their own.

Some people see the luck they got and feel it’s an excuse to be a dick goblin. Certainly, I think of people like Kavanaugh and Trump when it comes to that. Others understand their privilege and it’s not even necessarily racial I’m talking here but it certainly part of it. I always wonder how different my life would be were I a woman and or a PoC on the spectrum in a less well off family situation. That motivates me to want the same help I got as an middle to upper middle class white guy on the spectrum to want it for all kids regardless of gender, socio-econmic background, etc.

I mean sometimes it’s someone who can’t afford it period and it wasn’t their poor choices but damn. If we’re so fucking great, we shouldn’t have shit like that.

Many of these people who find themselves in this condition are self-employed construction types who under-report their income. They don’t want to pay taxes, they don’t want to have to buy insurance. A woman I know is getting divorced, and said her husband massively under-reports his income so now he can’t qualify for a mortgage to buy her out of their house, even though he makes more than she makes. He will have to honestly report for a few years in order to get a mortgage. With as little income as he reports, he could easily afford Obamacare subsidized insurance, but nope.

America is struggling to become post-Christian. I don’t know how it will turn out, given the propensity of the fundamentalist wing of the current American society are pushing real hard for their daughters to have a dozen babies.

This struggle for society’s ideological change works all the way up through the highest of ivory towers.

The more reading I do on early Christianity, the more I realize that many of the publishing scholars, at least American, not so much German, in this field are still giving deference to stories of magic.

Even indirectly - e.g., some scholars will eschew miracles but then take the apostle Paul on his word, when his (5 or 7 legitimate) letters are filled with things like visions, prophecies, etc.

It’s hard to change a society.

I bet most American scholars do not believe that an angel came to Mohammed and revealed the substance of the Quran, and even fewer will accept that an angel came to Joseph Smith and showed him the Book of Mormon.

Yet somehow these scholars use Paul’s words as some sort of historical guideline, when the story as it goes is clear that Paul claims he never saw “Jesus” when said character was alive, but only in a revelation.

This is not off topic of our SCOTUS politics.

Kavanaugh is very much the plant of fundamentalists, as was Gorsuch. This is part of their hopes to instill a theocracy. This they believe is their calling.

You being up an interesting dynamic that gets lost sometimes. That religious Americans find other religions supernatural stuff completely absurd. Like I’ll be the first to agree with the notion that Scientology is nuts but it’s no more nuts to me than Christ rising from the dead. I mean if you want to lean on a religion’s philosophy, that’s one thing but the RR to me shows how nutty they are when they claim demonic possession explains things like gay people or support for their equality.

I’m not attacking religious belief btw but rather the notion that one’s own set of religious supernatural beliefs is normal but others absurd. And there’s a profound ignorance in this country about non Christian religions which allows the RR to mislead people what non Christians believe.

Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) confirmed the news late Tuesday. The prosecutor will take a leave of absence from Maricopa County for a few days to go onto the Senate payroll for this specific reason.

But in an article I read earlier today:

A Democratic staffer noted that there are rules on bringing in outside counsel. A person at a law firm would have to quit his or her job to do the questioning ― the individual could not take a leave of absence and could not do it pro bono.

Is there a difference between taking a leave of absence from a law firm and taking one from a prosecutor’s office? Anybody know?

Hopefully that is what will happen — but after 2016, even with the positive outcomes of Virginia, Alabama, and Conor Lamb, I remain uncertain that the blue wave will materialize. Given the unfavorable position for the Senate, the widespread gerrymandering of House seats, the BernieBros, and the traditional lack of commitment of young voters, I fear that we will face disappointment once again.

If anything a prosecutor is even more conflicted because their office is likely to receive grants and funding from Congress.

The “known material witnesses” would rather not because really, they’re accomplices. Remember that Jody Foster movie, where a bunch of guys watched and shouted and urged him on? It wasn’t a couple of criminals and a bunch of witnesses — they were all criminals to some degree.

But when a majority of the population votes for one person and another becomes President, when clear majorities oppose virtually everything the party in power is doing but can’t do anything about it, this is what people like Cruz should expect.

The Accused

Based off this incident that really does share some attributes with Kavanaugh and his thinking in high school and college.

Cheryl Araujo Rape Case - Wiki Page

First paragraphs at Wiki:

Cheryl Ann Araujo (March 28, 1961 - December 14, 1986) was an American rape victim whose case became national news. She was gang-raped in 1983 at age 21 by four men in a tavern in New Bedford, Massachusetts, while other patrons watched but did not intervene. During the prosecution, the defendants’ attorneys cross-examined Araujo to such an extent about her own life and activities that the case became widely seen as a template for “blaming the victim” in rape cases. Her case was widely known as the “Big Dan’s rape,” after the name of the bar in which the attack occurred. Ostracized in New Bedford, Araujo moved with her family to Miami, Florida, to make a new life. She died a few years later in a drunk driving car accident.

Her case prompted national debate at the time over broadcasting of the trial, in which her name was released. Some states have passed legislation to protect the names of rape victims, and court cases have attempted to settle issues of newsworthiness, freedom of the press, and state interest, as well as personal privacy. Her case was the basis of the 1988 film The Accused.

So, anyway, I used to work at a legal support business (copying paperwork, making courtroom displays) in the 1990s. I was talking to a friend of my roommate’s, and he mentioned that the place where he worked was thinking of hiring one of my former co-workers. When he said who, i told him “Don’t hire that guy, he was fired for sexual harassment”. The guy didn’t get the low-level management job he was applying for.
I would hope a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the United States would have higher standards than that low-level management job.

Danish tourist slammed by wildlife official for jumping on crocodile(Video at link)

A young man claiming to be the “Danish Crocodile Dundee” has been chastised by Australian wildlife officials who find no humor in a “reckless” stunt where he jumped on a massive crocodile.

Niels Jensen made waves on social media Monday for hopping on the back of a burly saltwater crocodile, which was roughly 15 feet and weighed over 1,430 pounds, news.com.au reported.

In the 50-second clip, which has been viewed over 9,700 times on YouTube, the 22-year-old baits the reptile with a wallaby carcass in what’s believed to be a wildlife park near Darwin in the North Territory, as per Newsweek.
