When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

Jeebus, how old is he? Sixteen? It’s a great jazz riff on the original.

re: #46 No Malarkey!

Go see the video of him trying to stand for the first time after getting sick:

facebook.com

He was in a coma for over ten days and incubated for 47. Someone in the twitter replies pointed out that he’s at a hospital where he can learn to swallow again.

The full feed: m.facebook.com

In July, he has a picture up of being 56 and in shape, and in August his wife posted on of him lying chest down in the ICU.

I want to thank Detective Andy Sipowicz for the spelling/pronunciation aid on the Gland.

“Librul media”

Aug 16: “The Taliban have taken over Kabul! Biden abandoned all those people! It’s going to be a slaughter worse than the Fall of Saigon!”

Aug 20: “Okay, well even though people aren’t being executed in the streets, tens of thousands of Afghan citizens have been left to the mercy of the Taliban! All those women who are about to be forced into sexual slavery! The men who’ll be executed for liberal ideas! Biden has presided over the worst foreign policy blunder in American history!”

Aug 24: “WHY ARE WE NOT EVACUATING THE AMERICANS FIRST?!”

Just got through that. Radiation. It sucked but I still think it was better than the surgery. We will have to monitor it but my PSA is down to 2.2 from 10.8 in May.

Aunt Viv lived in San Francisco for 40 years right by the Cable Car main route and she worked at Blum’s Coffee Shops. She knew their secret sourdough pancake/waffles and boysenberry syrup recipes.

I could have had them for breakfast, lunch AND dinner they were that good.

Oh and she also knew how to make Blum’s famous Coffee Crunch cake.

Valerie Gordon also knows how to make those classic cakes!

Aunt Vivian hated Campbell’s Mushroom Soup. She made hers from scratch with beef stock.

Sure didn’t taste like Campbell’s!

That’s a gross recipe but it doesn’t have to be that bad.

My great aunt used to make Chicken and Rice with a cup (uncooked) rice, one can of mushroom soup, two cans of cream of celery & three cans of milk. Mix and spoon over the cut up chicken. Bake at 350 till it falls from the bone (usually ~2 hours). Excellent Sunday evening dinner. I still make it, occasionally with a layer of tater tots.

Conservatives seek out this sort of information to support their religious belief.

Unless you want to go to “religion is a mental disorder” (even as a moderately strong atheist I don’t go there), then I agree (since conservatives seem to always project), “conservatism is a mental disorder.”

This is wilful behaviour, not mental illness.

Our household does a bit of a variation on that. We put frozen chicken breasts in a pan and cover with 3-4 cans of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup and bake covered (either lid or aluminum foil) for an hour at 350. Then in the last 15-30 minutes, we make some rice either on the stove or in the rice cooker, then when the chicken’s done we plate it next to rice with the soup ladled over like a gravy.

This is close to the cream of mushroom soup Aunt Vivian made.

But she used beef instead of chicken stock

Cream of Mushroom Soup

INGREDIENTS
4 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon oil
2 onions diced
4 cloves garlic minced
1 1/2 pounds (750 g) fresh brown mushrooms sliced
4 teaspoons chopped thyme divided
1/2 cup Marsala wine (any dry red or white wine)
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 cups low sodium chicken broth or stock
1-2 teaspoons salt adjust to taste
1/2-1 teaspoons black cracked pepper adjust to taste
2 beef bouillon cubes, crumbled
1 cup heavy cream or half and half (sub with evaporated milk)
Chopped fresh parsley and thyme to serve
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat butter and oil in a large pot over medium-high heat until melted. Sauté onion for 2 to 3 minutes until softened. Cook garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Add mushrooms and 2 teaspoons thyme, cook for 5 minutes. Pour in wine and allow to cook for 3 minutes.

Sprinkle mushrooms with flour, mix well and cook for 2 minutes. Add stock, mix again and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low-medium heat, season with salt, pepper and crumbled bouillon cubes.

Cover and allow to simmer for 10-15 minutes, while occasionally stirring, until thickened.
Reduce heat to low, stir in cream or half and half. Allow to gently simmer (do not boil). Adjust salt and pepper to your taste.

Mix in parsley and remaining thyme. Serve warm.

These are amazing figures, possible because of maximum deck loading (ie no seats). During the fall of Saigon in 1975, 70 VNAF aircraft reached Thailand with 2000 people aboard but 30 of the fleeing aircraft were single-seat F-5 fighters. One of them, nevertheless, had 3 people aboard. Another, a C-130, flew to the Philippines.

I’ve opined in the past that I’ve had difficulty in recent decades telling the difference between religious fanaticism and mental illness and in this case I’d reiterate that position. It’s hard to tell whether she has made a willful choice to ignore objective reality in favor of a fantasy of political persecution and victimhood or whether she has lost grip on objective reality to such a degree that she can’t be sure that what she’s being told is truth or fiction. It’s possible that she’s a totally gullible idiot who’s been taken in by a con artist who is using her (and millions like her) to serve their own ends, but it’s just as possible that she truly believes the words she’s reading and thinks there’s a vast conspiracy to cram persons like her into concentration camps as part of some grand sinister plan.

Fair point, I’m mostly convinced that the bulk of these anti-vaxxers by this point are the sort of gullible fools who get snookered by “get rich quick” schemes or spend fortunes on “super foods” that end up being scientifically debunked (if not already) by the time they realize that sitting on their ass scarfing exotic fruits and chugging beet juice isn’t making them healthier. Sen. Andre Jacque of De Pere, Wisconsin, was being intubated as he struggles with the virus. Being intubated is often seen as the last-ditch effort to save someone as their oxygen levels crash.

The 40-year-old Jacque was diagnosed with the virus earlier this month and has been hospitalized for at least a week. He claimed in an interview with the paper last week that he was “largely asymptomatic” and really only felt fatigued.

“In recent months, Jacque has been one of most outspoken lawmakers against COVID-19 vaccine mandates and has authored legislation that would bar government officials or business owners from requiring Wisconsinites be vaccinated against COVID-19 or show proof of vaccination to access services,” said the report.

And the Senator’s brother has choice words for the thoughts and prayers clique!

And we need to add old fashioned brainwashing to the list. It’s only now that we’re seeing a lot of it in the population, and it’s not so easy for the rest of us to understand that brainwashed people are not entirely responsible for their beliefs, but it’s another part of that devil’s brew.

And now the latest from Crackhead Mike!

The case isn’t going very well for Lindell, however, law.com reported Tuesday. Last week, the judge refused a motion to dismiss the trial, so Lindell’s legal team is trying something different. They’re attempting to bypass the trial altogether and go straight to the appeal.

This evening, Lindell’s lawyers filed documents asking that their argument that Dominion was acting as the government in 2020 be taken to the appellee court. The problem is that they haven’t even had the trial and gotten a ruling to appeal. Dominion contracts with some local governments, but that doesn’t mean that they are the government.

And Captain Underpants gets in the act…

“My Pillow attorneys, including Alan Dershowitz and Supreme Court veteran Nathan Lewin, argue they believe the appeals court will rule in their favor and find ‘Dominion’s complaint did not satisfy the most stringent actual malice requirement under New York Times v. Sullivan, which applies to a government actor operating in the context of a large public debate,’” said the report.

See, this is why the rest of the world has such a low opinion of Americans. We have so many vaccine doses available to us that we are not only discussing booster shots when we haven’t even finished vaccinating our entire population, but we’re also throwing away tens of thousands of vials because state governments sit on them until they expire.

And yet, millions of our own citizens are rejecting something that is being given away for free and is proven to prevent severe illness and death in favor of quack science about lupus medications and horse paste. Americans are injuring or killing themselves out of nothing but pure spite. What’s worse, every one of them who either poisons themself or waits until they’re gasping for air to head to the hospital are imperiling people who followed the rules and took precautions by gobbling up limited medical resources.

FFS, where’s that damned meteor of death I was promised back in 2012?

If you listen to callers I deal with at work…THEY ARE THAT FUCKING DUMB!

You would be shocked to hear the spike in calls we’ve gotten where people demanding Medicare cover the cost of Ivermectin.

So I’ve been meaning to share a run-in with a COVID “truther” the other day at work but haven’t gotten around to it. The subject in question was a guy from our sister property who was down here for “familiarization” with ours in the event our GM needs to frantically call his GM for somebody to cover the desk in the event we’re all on vacation or dead.

This is a guy who looks like he might be in his early or mid 20s (then again so do I and I’m 37). And if it hadn’t been for the staff cook-out to see off our director of sales, my interaction with him would have been limited to a quick show around the lobby before I went home to crash on my bed. But I was there for the free food and ended up talking with him before I left about COVID and the company policy on allowing us to go without masks if we’re vaccinated.

And in the small group discussion that commenced, he proceeded to opine in that way that says “I’ve read a lot on the internet”:

- COVID is actually a “super flu” virus that was created in a Chinese lab

- The Chinese lab violated CDC protocols (*facepalm*) by not creating the vaccine when they created the virus

- All the vaccines are really just boosted flu shots, which you can avoid if you don’t normally have problems with the flu

- The only reason the government’s pushing the vaccines is to make up for their mistake in not better monitoring the Chinese lab

But since my colleagues were nodding along to this and I’m fairly sure I won’t see this guy ever again, I just decided that discretion was the better part of valor and went home to sleep. Six months ago, I might have tried to correct the record if only for the people I work with rather than thinking I could change his mind. Now? Fuck it, I’ll let natural selection take its course.

More on the reason conservatives want to weaken education.

“At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there was too much uncertainty and confusion regarding the best measures to protect oneself against the coronavirus,” said study author Vladimira Cavojova of the Centre for Social and Psychological Sciences at the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

“Scientists became the center of attention and we hypothesized that people who understand the workings of science better would be better able to navigate the sea of conflicting information and resist pseudoscientific and unfounded beliefs.”

In the study, which was conducted about a week after the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Slovakia, 783 participants were asked to indicate how much they agreed with various coronavirus conspiracy beliefs, such as “SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) is a biological weapon created to eliminate the overcrowded human population” and “COVID-19 (coronavirus) is only a fabrication, it is an ordinary flu which pharmaceutical companies rebranded to increase the sales of drugs.”

The participants also completed a test of scientific reasoning in which they were asked to respond to six true or false statements, including “The researchers want to find out how to increase natality. They ask for statistical information and see that there are more children born in cities that have more hospitals. This finding implies that building new hospitals will increase the birth rate of the population.”

Down goes another school on the altar of conservative religion.

Papillion kindergarten class quarantining because of COVID (Omaha World-Herald, Papillion [accent on the second syllable] is a suburb of Omaha)

A principal of a Papillion elementary school informed parents Monday that students in a kindergarten class at the school would need to quarantine because of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the class.

Matt Hilderbrand, the principal of Patriot Elementary near 96th Street and Schram Road, sent an email to parents noting that the Sarpy/Cass Health Department “has recommended that students in Mrs. O’Leary’s Kindergarten class remain at home the rest of the week and monitor for symptoms. This was done out of an abundance of caution as there were multiple confirmed cases as of (Monday).”

Hilderbrand added, “We are navigating this at the school level and want to ensure we are working together to address the health and academic needs of the students in our building.”

Hilderbrand’s note went out just 30 minutes after the start of the Papillion La Vista school board meeting at which the board decided masks will remain optional in the district’s schools — for now.

Hit dogs holler. Hopefully the investigation will see the teacher returned.

An Elkhorn Public Schools teacher has been placed on administrative leave following a Facebook post that compared anti-maskers and Klansmen.

The district confirmed Tuesday that the post showed the hood of a Ku Klux Klan outfit and a medical face mask and posed the question: “Isn’t it strange they can breathe in this (the KKK mask) but not this (the medical mask)?”

The teacher’s name has not been released.

Kara Perchal, district spokeswoman, said the district was made aware of the post Tuesday morning. The teacher has been placed on leave while the issue is investigated, she said in a statement.

Letter responding to various morans in the Omaha World-Herald Public Pulse (letters column); let’s see if they print it.

omaha.com (original letters column to which I am responding)

Cheryl Bartek wrote in her August 20 letter “Lack of a Credible Exit Plan in Afghanistan Is Appalling.” There is no mention of all the troops withdrawn by the previous administration, leaving our position untenable. No mention that when a war is lost, you don’t get to dictate the terms to the winner.

The original objective laid out by President George W. Bush was to degrade Afghanistan’s ability to support terrorist training camps (successful) and capture or kill Osama bin Laden (abandoned by him).

Afghanistan is known as the Graveyard of Empires for a good reason.

There is no case where we could stay for whatever reason and not have our forces and allies attacked again, with a political message to the whole world “we don’t keep our agreements.” I don’t particularly like Donald Trump, but he was the President at the time, his Secretary of State met directly with the Taliban to get their people released from prison (including their current leader) in exchange for us being able to withdraw without being attacked, then they withdrew most of our troops before Joe Biden was inaugurated. That is the deal our government made. President Biden is executing the deal as those negotiations require.

Ms. Barb Yllescas-Vorthmann writes she is a Gold Star Mother of a fallen officer. I am the Gold Star Son of a fallen Navy Chief from the Vietnam War.

This war was unwinnable beyond the goals set originally but abandoned by President George W. Bush. Just as in Vietnam, you cannot bomb your way to a democracy, and I am openly offended by all the comparisons to the fall of Saigon. Absolutely no people were evacuated after South Vietnam fell; we continue to evacuate people from Afghanistan now, more than a week after the government fell, far more than we evacuated from Saigon. The military equipment left behind they cannot use. Anything of value was already removed or destroyed; even if removing it was a consideration by the Trump Administration, there was no way to do so from that landlocked country through nations which did not want us crossing their borders with our military. They will not use anything against us; they can’t reach us. The women and girls are resisting now.

I find it noteworthy so many argue “why aren’t we evacuating X number of people” and in the same sentence “not in my backyard though.” Iran has the world’s biggest urban refugee camp of Afghans. We are not even close, yet plenty want to close the borders entirely to them.

Katharine Hunter asks why we can’t maintain a base there, like we do in South Korea. It turns out South Korea wants us there. It would be very difficult to maintain a base in a landlocked country which is hostile to us. As for drones, we don’t need to base them there, and Afghanistan is within striking range of carrier aircraft if necessary.

It also means not blaming the Chinese, the liberal press or the Deep State when you fail miserably, and not blaming Dominion Voting Systems when you lose an election.

All is not well north of the border:

Fairy Creek old-growth logging protests

Protests against old growth logging in the South Vancouver Island region of British Columbia escalated through later 2020 and into 2021. These events, many coalescing around the Fairy Creek watershed, represent a critical moment in BC’s recurring history of conflict related to ecological values and the forest industry, recalling The War in the Woods and the Clayoquot Protests of the early 1990s.

Including the actual murder of soldiers during the exercise.

Greg Abbott, never seeing a conspiracy theory on which he can’t waste Texas tax money, also activated the Texas National Guard to monitor the exercise.

Jade Helm 15 conspiracy theories arose at the same time as Wal*Mart FEMA camp conspiracy theories, and were immediately linked.

All of that arose from the exercise map published by the US Army, which conservative screechers like Alex Jones insisted were really plans to disarm people (a perennial favourite all my life amongst conservatives), impose martial law, &c.

So since most of Afghanistan’s opium /heroin goes to Europe, I would assume that the USA has little interest in interdicting it…

Something that always works to undermine illegal drug trafficking is to implement something which is legal (Colorado—maryjane regulation, &c).

Opiate medications were not originally synthesised, they were derived from opium poppies. The problem here is capitalism; it is cheaper to synthesise medications like codeine.

It might be in the interests of nations to subsidise (gasp) drug companies to purchase and process legitimately-grown opium poppies from Afghan growers (giving them a legal outlet to earn money).

Opium poppy laws here are already hosed from conflicting laws. In the United States, it is legal to grow opium poppies for flower gardens, but illegal to possess opium straw (since opium tea can be made from it). You can’t sell the straw or opium (the DEA takes a very dim view of that), and those laws apply to foreigners as well (Afghans can’t sell here either).

Our town has a massive opium poppy garden planted by a Vietnam veteran in honour of WW1.

That seems to be a solution (though I admit I don’t know if it would work). All the interdiction in the world isn’t going to stop opium poppy production though.

Today in Christian nationalism:

Jason Rapert set for contempt hearing in 10 Commandments lawsuit (Arkansas Times)

Federal Judge Kristine Baker has set a hearing Sept. 8 for Sen. Jason Rapert (R-District 35) to show cause why he should not be held in contempt of court for refusing to provide information to opposing lawyers in the lawsuit over the 10 Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds.

Several plaintiffs sued Secretary of State John Thurston, who oversees the Capitol grounds, in 2018 over the monument, a tablet bearing a version of the 10 Commandments. Rapert led the legislative effort in 2015 to make a place for the installation on Capitol grounds and the plaintiffs contend it amounts to an establishment of religion by the state. A similar monument was successfully challenged in Oklahoma, by the Satanic Temple, which has intervened in the Arkansas case. It says if the 10 Commandments may be memorialized on the Capitol grounds, it should be allowed to place a satanic statue on the grounds.

(The Satanic Temple is not a party to the suit, they filed a brief. Parties include the ACLU, the Freedom from Religion Foundation, and several Christians and atheists in their own capacity. All the suits were rolled up into one class-action.)

The case has dragged along, partly because of the pandemic and partly because of resistance by parties to providing information. Rapert has refused to provide information about the source of the bill he introduced to pave the way for the monument, claiming legislative privilege. He has also refused to provide information about the private organization that raised money for the installation. Plaintiffs believe this material would illustrate the religious roots of the project.

You know that whole brining turkey/chickens to make it moist and tender?

That’s part and parcel of the koshering process. Kosher birds are widely seen as more moist than other birds on the market. So, if you don’t have the time to brine your turkey, a Kosher one will do quite nicely.

Wohl & Burkman get fined $5million by the FCC

The FCC just proposed the largest robocalling fine in the history of robocalling. Released on Tuesday, the proposal calls for right-wing fraudsters and racist robocall creators Jacob Wohl and John Burkman to pay a $5,134,500 fine for “apparently making 1,141 unlawful robocalls to wireless phones without prior express consent in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).” The proposal points out that besides being the largest fine for robocalling ever proposed by the FCC, “It is also the first action where the FCC was not required to warn robocallers before robocall violations could be counted toward a proposed fine, per Congress’s recent amendment of the TCPA.”

$4500 fine per phone call adds up fast.

2nd time in 5 years
fortunately 5 days before the 5 year warranty is up
so around 650 vs 2k+

what looked like a freon leak outside was frozen condensate on the pipes melting…

the likely cause of the motor failures is the ducts werent evaluated / sized / replaced with the unit in 2016.

we’re guessing they are now over 20 years old and the pics from the visual inspection didnt look good

then we’re adding in mrsdm’s lung issues and yeah, it’s time

so maybe we’ll get the motor today and the house cooled off.
then we’re looking at replacing all the ducts and adding UV light in the air handler as well.

small house / full day job

Candace Owens hit with $20m lawsuit for calling fellow pundit a strip club ‘madame’ (The Independent)

The suit comes from former congressional candidate Kimberly Klacik

Conservative pundit Candace Owens is facing a $20m defamation lawsuit which claims she smeared a fellow right-wing commentator with false allegations of drug use, fraud and working as a strip club “madame”.

Kimberly Klacik, a former Republican congressional candidate and regular on conservative news programmes, accused Ms Owens of sharing an insulting string of allegations in an Instagram video seen by thousands that she claims amounted to “character assassination,” part of a long-running feud between the two.

“Baseless character assassination has no place in political dialogue,” Ms Klacik’s attorney, Jacob S Frankel, told Law & Crime (further details at the link). “The defendant chose to use her huge social media platform to attack a respected Baltimore political figure; we are using the proper forum - the power of the courts - to respond.”

They missed Angora’s one murder, kidnapping, and car arson in a town with a population of one. Per capita Angora is by far the most violent town in this state.

I did not know moose are that far south.

Also here, apparently.

A wandering moose is roaming western Nebraska in the tracks of newcomer mountain lions, elk and bighorn sheep.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission officials say a moose has been spotted numerous times by residents in the North Platte River valley in the Panhandle.

Confirmed sightings suggest that the moose has been in the region for several weeks and was last reported in Morrill County.

Moose are rarely seen in Nebraska. Wildlife biologists suspect the recent arrival came from Wyoming. Unlike breeding populations of cougars, elk and bighorns established in recent decades, Nebraska has no wild moose herds.

Occasionally, a wayward Minnesota moose will be seen in northeast Nebraska.

This is rare: Moose spotted several times in Nebraska Panhandle (Omaha World-Herald, April 8, 2015)

LINCOLN - The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is monitoring the movement of a bull moose through northeastern Nebraska.

A moose was observed Oct. 4 near Dixon, which is 12 miles north of Wayne in Dixon County. This follows one report of a moose sighting Sept. 26 south of Platte Center in Platte County and another in recent days of a moose near Wayne in Wayne County.

The Commission urges the public to keep a safe distance from any moose, and especially not approach it. Even if moose appear to be docile, they have been known to become aggressive.

“Commission staff will periodically monitor the movement of the moose as it explores rural areas of northeastern Nebraska,” said Karie Decker, the Commission’s interim wildlife division administrator. “It is expected that if the moose, as with most wildlife, encounters a more urban area, it will pass through to more rural environments.”

I love this about the nine centrist Democrats who wanted to show they were tough and got squat out of their tactics:

“I don’t consider them concessions,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) said of the demands granted to the centrists.

“The fact that they’re gonna end up supporting what they said they wouldn’t without actually getting what they wanted, I think sets them up for failure in negotiations in the future,” she added.

The TL;DR of the thread is that appealing this kind of decision is basically frowned upon, rarely granted, and mostly serves just to antagonize the court and make you look like a petty jackass in front of the judge. Which is accurate; Lindell is, in fact, a petty jackass. I’m happy to watch him beclown himself repeatedly.

The trash truck just drove off the alley and got stuck in my backyard.

After several minutes of digging my yard up, they got free.

I suppose I could put a claim in to the village but it’s probably easier to fix it myself. We’re not talking an irrigated lawn here, just sparse prairie grasses and numerous Russian thistle (Old West tumbleweeds). Basically I just have to fill in the trench he dug in my yard with the truck.

My wife really offended our Swiss friend when we were in Germany describing how bratwurst is sold here: In patties.

Germans pulled out a Mettwurst , which looks like a Jimmy Dean sausage roll for breakfast and were shocked that wanted to fry it with the eggs.

Heck, they were shocked at me wanting to fry anything for breakfast, they might serve a hard-boiled egg and some toast, but the rest of a proper German breakfast is served at room temperature.

I remember having to make several yard repairs at my grandmother’s house, as her property was adjacent to a narrow alley and was also the only open space along said alley, resulting in vehicles just kinda meandering into her yard space at random.

Man Photographed as Baby on ‘Nevermind’ Cover Sues Nirvana, Alleging Child Pornography (Variety)

The album cover depicts Elden underwater in a swimming pool as a then-infant with his genitalia exposed. The image has generally been understood as a statement on capitalism, as it includes the digital imposition of a dollar bill on a fishhook that the baby appears to be enthusiastically swimming toward. Non-sexualized nude photos of infants are generally not considered child pornography under law.

However, Robert Y. Lewis, Elden’s lawyer, offers an unusual interpretation of the image to argue that it crosses the line into child porn, writing that the inclusion of currency in the shot makes the baby appear “like a sex worker.”

He is suing each member of the band and those who produced the album for $150,000.

What was a constant, in the past as now, is that Elden has said he was never compensated for the photo beyond the $200 his parents were paid for it on the day of the shoot. In previous interviews, he’s said he tried to get in touch with Grohl and Novoselic, on a friendly basis, but never got a reply. A possibly new contention in the lawsuit is that Elden’s parents never even signed paperwork allowing any use of the image.

“Neither Spencer nor his legal guardians ever signed a release authorizing the use of any images of Spencer or of his likeness, and certainly not of commercial child pornography depicting him,” reads the suit.

The filing references some famous, or infamous, moments in rock album art history: “The concept and creation of this image replicated previous controversial campaigns used to promote music with sexually explicit material depicting a child or outright child pornography, including the album covers for Scorpion’s ‘Virgin Killer,’ Blind Faith’s ‘Blind Faith’ and Van Halen’s ‘Balance.’”

Igor Vovkovinskiy, tallest man in US, dies at 38 (Omaha World-Herald, top article this morning)

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Igor Vovkovinskiy, the tallest man in the United States, has died in Minnesota. He was 38.

His family said the Ukrainian-born Vovkovinskiy died of heart disease on Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His mother, Svetlana Vovkovinska, an ICU nurse at Mayo, initially posted about his death on Facebook.

Vovkovinskiy came to the Mayo Clinic in 1989 as a child seeking treatment. A tumor pressing against his pituitary gland caused it to secrete abnormal levels of growth hormone. He grew to become the tallest man in the U.S. at 7 feet, 8.33 inches and ended up staying in Rochester.

His older brother, Oleh Ladan of Brooklyn Park, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that Vovkovinskiy was a celebrity when he arrived from Ukraine because of his size and the flickering Cold War of the late 1980s. But Ladan said Vovkovinskiy “would have rather lived a normal life than be known.”

Jesse Lee Peterson is often characterized as low in intelligence due to his speech patterns. That is not the case. He was born with a cleft palette which was not corrected by surgery until age six. As such, his speech development was affected and he has not been able to overcome that difficulty.

He should be characterized as low in intelligence for the very stupid opinions and beliefs he holds and because of his very limited ability to think logically and clearly.

ℹ️ QALIBAN NEWS SPIN TACTIC DETECTED ⚠️
Some less than reputable news sources will carefully omit details from a news story, so that while they still are technically telling the truth, they’re not the whole truth, in order to entirely change the perception of a news piece.
In this case, it was Delta Airlines charging refusenik employees $200 per month, which on closer scrutiny turns out to be Delta Airlines passing the cost of their health care insurers raising the premiums.
A healthcare insurer passing on the cost for increased expenditures for CoViD care is much less inflammatory and sexy than spinning the news as “Woke airline penalizes free thinkers”
Like, an ICU bed costs like 40,000 to 50,000 SEK ($4k-$5k) per diem here in Sweden, and that’s the base cost, excluding any extras such as ventilators, single-use items etc. The average care period for someone who has to visit lé ICU is on the order of weeks, especially if you have your liberties violated by a vent tube. To that comes the cost for aftercare for sequelae which is known to be in the order of a year at least for CoViD (ICU cases almost invariably end up with sequelae), not to mention the many “long haulers” (you have something like 2 times the dead that turn out to be longies). So, for US conditions and counting with a hospital overhead of 60%, that’s 64,000 to 80,000 SEK ($6k4-$8k) per diem. Just for the bed. Ventilator costs extra. As do single-use items. So if a single patient average stay in the ICU for CoViD is 21 days, that’s $105k (1,050,000 SEK) just for the ICU bed…
And when it’s clear that being a refusenik greatly increses the chance for said refusenik to incur the health insurance company such costs, of course they’re gonna pass it on to the refusenik.
And yeah, if you were unable to read between the lines, here in Sweden, hospitals to a large extent do care at cost… That is, no profit, just what they spend and a little margin in the single-digit percentages.

We’re about to see which conservative anti-vaxxers really do believe the nonsense around the vaccines, and which ones were simply conducting performative defiance. Hitting someone in the wallet really fleshes out who the true believers are.

Surely if you believe that the vaccines are poison or other nonsense, you would pay $200 a month to avoid it (though that might cut into your sheep dip budget).

Weird, both 91-DIVOC and OWD show that 5.45 million Israelis have been fully vaccinated (so 91-DIVOC is getting the right data from OWD) but 91-DIVOC says that’s 59% of the population and OWD says it’s 63%.

Google gives pop of 8,655,535 (UN estimate, mid 2020) so OWD seems right at about 62-63%

But…

The Israeli government says that at the start of 2021 the population was 9,291,000 residents, so 91-DIVOC is right at about 58-59%

OWD seem to be using an incorrect figure for the population, which means it’s overestimating the percentage of the Israeli population that’s vaccinated.

It might just be something getting lost in translation between Sweden and here, but I’m not a fan of the term “refusenik” to describe people who won’t take the vaccine. The word has a very specific meaning for me, describing the Soviet Jews who were denied permission to emigrate in the 1970s and 1980s.

I spent a lot of my time in synagogue youth group involved in advocacy for those refuseniks (and a lot more time in youth group chasing girls who had no interest in me, but that’s another story), and some of the advocacy actually worked.

(Also I found out later on that my college girlfriend, now spouse of 25 years, had been at the same big rally for Soviet Jews in DC in 1987 that I attended.)

Anyway, I see “refusenik” and I think of the Soviet Jews fighting a good fight, not the anti-vaxx morons fighting against reality and science and health.

Well it finally touched us. My wife’s Brother is now in the ER with an O2 of 76. Him and his crazy making spouse are on the Sheep Dip cure and now he may get the vent. Plus he’s diabetic.

If you are in Missouri, Stay away from any LEO’s there. They are ALL infected.

I just wrote a big twitter thread on this. Cuomo’s number was 12,000 lower because he omitted covid deaths outside of certain identifiable hospital settings. If you died at home or in a hospice of covid, your death didn’t count in his metrics.

A lie is still a lie.

The total death toll in NY is over 55,000, which is pretty much what worldometers and JHU were already showing.

This is a different lie from what DeSantis and other GOPers are doing, which also includes withholding all data altogether.

I read a story on news.yahoo.com that children are apologizing to their unvaccinated parents in the hospital for going to school and getting them infected with Covid. It’s heartbreaking.

You know, you would think all the anti-vax forums and message boards would have identified real doctors willing to prescribe all of these “cure/treatments” by now. It’s not like ivermectin in human doses does not exist. I mean if you can find an ER doctor selling ‘opt-out’ letters, you have to have more than a few folks with prescription pads more than willing to fill requests for a reasonable fee

Q-Ball Trump Supporters…….

I’m starting to believe that worshipping the god-emperor is less of a cause and more of a symptom of the problem, to be honest. While they are very highly correlated, a lot of the “Trump is my personal idol” shit literally just comes down to, “Trump does whatever he wants and says, ‘Fuck you,’ to the rules.” They loved it every time he blatantly broke a law and dared someone to do something about it. It’s what they secretly long for - the power to literally do whatever they want with no consequences.

A Mom Anon  Aug 25, 2021 • 10:58:02am

Fucking insurance companies, fuckity fuck fuck:

1) husband got a letter saying that the WellStar hospital system will no longer take my husbands Medicare plan because their deal with United Health Care is ending in October. Because WellStar is run by greedy shits that want more money and will force UHC to raise rates by 50 percent.

2) meanwhile, I just got another bill from my GI doctor for 550 dollars for the procedures and removal of polyps back in May. This was settled and zeroed out, I thought. Now I have a bill here saying I only paid them 175 dollars which is bullshit. I never paid them a payment of 175 dollars. I paid them 509 dollars a week before the procedures at their insistence and I can’t get anyone to tell me where the fuck the 509 dollars was applied.

I am so fucking sick of this shit. Every single step of me getting treatment for my GI issues has had me having to fight for either treatment or payments. And now my husband has to change all his doctors, his short acting insulin won’t be covered and the other meds are going to cost more. How is this helping anyone be healthier? Fucking Damn It.

Turns out “what the shit did our crazy President do or say today” is such a lucrative business model, the media literally doesn’t know how to fill that void. So they’re resorting to steaming hot shit takes and counting on the outrage to drive traffic and revenue.

The media trained me well before 2016 that most of them were not worth paying attention to at all. Trivial coverage with no attempt at nuance or context since it was all essentially click-bait style headlines and coverage.

Piled onto that was an obvious bias to chase the dollar and “access” which meant they’d simply parrot lies or allow them to be made unchallenged.

So I was offered fluff coverage or misinformation in exchange for my time. No thank you.

re: #331 Belafon

getting the impression these people are going to be legitimately heartbroken if we’re actually able to effect an exit of personnel without the need to dump a dozen battalions in to turn kabul into fallujah

Fallujah, pop 275,128.
Kabul, pop 4.6 million.

One of these is not like the other.

What, exactly, do they think will happen to a “dozen battalions” of US troops in city of 4.6 million increasingly hostile people?

(A battalion is somewhere between 300 and 1000 troops, so we’re talking about dumping between 36,000 and 120,000 troops into an environment with 4.6 million increasingly hostile people).
