The “That 70s Show” stuff on the previous thread made me think, the only things that disappoint me worse than finding out a celebrity I like is a Scientologist, is finding out that they are rapist or a child molester.

That’s how far you have to go to be worse than Scientology to me.

I’ve rated finding out that they are a RWNJ, Homophobe, or Transphobe/TERF as just below or perhaps equal in disappointment to the Scientology thing.

re: #3 JC1

I’ve gotten it in 1 most of the time. Some of those island nations are horrible though. I’m kind of a map nerd and play a shit ton of strategy games though.

In the past couple of weeks I’ve missed getting it in 1 simply by mix ups.

Slightly spoilerish maybe

I mixed up San Marino and Monaco
Paraguay and Uraguay
Columbia and Bolivia

Are you talking about the big mass rides of high speed assholes? I’ve seen the big groups in SF and LA. They are usually on what I’d call e-scooter/e-motorcycle(s). They are a menace. I don’t consider them e-bicycles. I’ve only seen a couple groups of e-bicycles on the bike trail in the past year. One month exactly until I’ve had my bike for a full year. I reached 2460 miles after a 22 mile ride today.

It was specifically a group of people riding e-bikes downtown. They were actually sitting at a light. But they all had similar bikes with the 4 inch or so fat tires.

I don’t remember seeing it mentioned here, but Angelina Jolie visited Lviv Ukraine Saturday. Lots of photos and videos. And of course, the required oblivious teenager who has now become something of a meme.

re: #9 Belafon

In the DC Region we get group rides of bicyclists who blow through traffic lights and stop signs, cut in front of traffic, etc. Mostly males 20-40 wearing ‘spandex bike clothing’ riding on racing style bikes. I am continually surprised that there haven’t been many collisions between they and the large number of idiot drivers that we also from locally.

We also every couple of years get groups of dirtbikes, street motorcycles, atvs, etc who play with traffic on major thoroughfares like the beltway.

A large group of motorcyclists converged on the Capital Beltway, disrupting traffic at times Sunday afternoon by crowding lanes, driving dangerously and even raising smoke while doing stunts.

The group peacefully convened in a park and ride off the Beltway in Oxon Hill late Sunday morning. Around 1 p.m., the group, initially numbering in the hundreds, poured onto the Outer Loop of the Beltway.

Between Oxon Hill and Landover, some of the participants began driving on shoulders, driving the wrong way on ramps, lane-splitting and preforming wheelies and burnouts.

As far as I can tell, the red armbands are to (mostly) identify the rows in each unit formation.

A bicycle either has a motor, or it is a human powered vehicle. People can create a menace with or without any vehicle, especially in groups. Behavior needs to be regulated. Bad behavior needs to be made against the rules, which then need enforcement. People need to be taught how to operate each vehicle they use. And they need to remove phones from their attention during any transportation activity (I would include walking). I have seen a guy on a motorized skateboard staring at his phone, in the bike lane (at least going in the correct direction).

Well these people on Surons and higher powered electric motorcycles are outside the class of ebikes. They go 40+ MPH. I’m OK with up to a class 3+ e-bike up to 28 MPH with either pedal assist or throttle. That can be necessary with blended bike/traffic lanes. These 3000-10,000W EVs need to be classified as licensed motor vehicles.

Mr. w has advocated for licensing all the way down to and including human powered vehicles to use public roads. Personally, I would start at 50 cc, as they did in New Mexico, or maybe less. They need a speed limit in bicycle lanes. If it’s a shoulder, there’s a high-speed lane on the left. I need to learn what the different classes are. I can’t see the significance of pedal-assist vs. throttle when it comes to regulating behavior.

Speed kills, even when it’s run on straight carbohydrates.

Captain Ron  May 1, 2022 • 1:50:45am

Here on the trails in my area the paved bike trails have a 15 MPH limit. Skinny tire guys ride at 18-20MPH. I think bike lanes are OK to class 3 (28MPH) but might be class 2 (20MPH). I ride 12-13 MPH on the trails and usually only about 20 in bike lanes but occasionally will do a mile or two at as fast as I can go which is 26-28MPH. I’d need a bigger chain ring to go faster, I’m at max pedal speed. I’m skinny and weigh 145.

Mr. w has advocated for licensing all the way down to and including human powered vehicles to use public roads.

Licensing of the operator, of course. He is also for registration of all vehicles to be used on public roads, including human powered.

I could see for anything over 2250 Watts (3 HP). Gas mopeds are more powerful than that, iirc. I have a problem with restricting power in some cases as it relates to how a person operates the vehicle. We allow vehicles with 700+ HP that can go over 160 MPH to drive on the highways because we expect the operators to not do that. So I guess that would involve licensing the rider.

Reasonable. Too fast for mixed use.

Skinny tire guys ride at 18-20MPH. I think bike lanes are OK to class 3 (28MPH) but might be class 2 (20MPH).

Are classes 2 and 3 spds. what the bikes are theoretically capable of? Or regulated not to exceed?

I ride 12-13 MPH on the trails and usually only about 20 in bike lanes but occasionally will do a mile or two at as fast as I can go which is 26-28MPH. I’d need a bigger chain ring to go faster, I’m at max pedal speed. I’m skinny and weigh 145.

I have no idea what any of that means in the motorized world. How are your knees? Any better? Less sore even with long rides? What kind of pedal RPMs? What is the resistance like? How much does the bike weigh? And loaded for travel?

I think I should go to bed.

Watts, cc, HP. Are they going to list that stuff at the trailheads? Inspect all the vehicles? Registration time. If the capability of the vehicle matters. License the operator if it’s the behavior that matters. Or do both. More regulations, more taxes, more political activity.

Make it mandatory for new vehicles and a a certain deadline for existing vehicles to be registered before being allowed on public roads/trails.

More regulations vs more accidents. Always a trade-off. Civilization and all…

Ebike classes. Class 1, pedal assist only, at 20 MPH pedal assist cuts off. Class 2, pedal assist and throttle to 20 MPH. Class 3, pedal assist to 28 MPH but throttle stops at 20 MPH. I consider bikes like mine to be class 3+, pedal assist and throttle to 28 MPH.

My bike weighs about 67 Lbs. I have about 8 lbs in chain, tools, speaker, bags. I pedal at about 30 rpm? The resistance is variable, I can select 5 levels of pedal assistance plus I can program my bikes maximum wattage which the 5 levels are based off of. I usually run the max power at a lower level. I’d say pedal assist 1 would feel like riding a cheap mountain bike in effort, as you increase the pedal assist it gets easier and will ad a small boost in speed. Riding in pedal assist 5 you’ll feel like superwoman. Cheaper bikes use a cadense sensor and it adds power based on how fast you pedal. My bike has a torque sensor and it feels more natural. I have to put effort into it to get the motor to add it’s force.

I live on a hill and I never bought a bike while I lived here because of that. I have a bad knee that forced me to retire with disability 10 years ago. I rode this area back in 1985 on a mountain bike and I’d say I can go further now even on pedal assist 1 than I did back in my 30s. Each level of pedal assist lessens the loads on your knees. I plan to get a rack so I can bike track a few days in the sierra with another 30 lbs of stuff loaded on the bike.\

God, I hope that’s some what readable cause I’m fucking drunk. I should do a drunk history…..

Did I miss anything?

40
Captain Ron  May 1, 2022 • 2:46:55am

Oh cadence sensors could be bad going up hill because you have to spin the crank a 1/3 of a turn before it recognizes pedal action, torque sensor starts immediately because of pressure on the pedal. To get around the cadence sensor problem you can use the throttle but that will likely cause the bike to wheelie back over you….

every single thing that happens in the Old Testament was written by people who were concerned with one thing: the story of the Jews and the covenant that they made with God—the times when things went well, and the times when the writers tried to explain the various periods of enslavement and misery by showing how these things corresponded to some failure in keeping that covenant. There are parts that are indeed intended to be read as straight history, and some of the straight history is pretty accurate. But the concept of “history” as an actual discipline hadn’t come about yet. All “history” was written in order to explain one side or the other of a conflict, or to achieve some purpose outside of objective fact-finding. There was a blend of the literal and symbolic, or metaphorical. As my dad would have said (and did), the problem with fundamentalism is that the fundamentalists take literally what is figurative, and figuratively what is literal, in the Bible.

My wife has occasionally been looking at our house on Zillow, and according to them our house sell value went from $400K to $405K in one week. When I bought the house 22 years ago, it was $150K.

Yeah, how can they let it go for so cheap?

In San Diego County, if that property was within 5 miles of the ocean it would go for $2M-$3M (depending upon community.)

.35 acres on a beach…. maybe $10M?

Retirees have been moving to Florida since before WWII.

Retirees used to move to California, too, but that ended decades ago, because real estate became too expensive.

Retirees still go to Arizona but it is creeping up in costs also.

Florida of course sees prices rises but it is still possible to live there on retirement income.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  May 1, 2022 • 10:15:02am

Sarasota is Trump-land. I’m sure it has something to do with retirees but I would never have thought, if you asked me 30 years ago, that said retirees would abandon the FDR-era beliefs in the role of government.

But this isn’t San Diego county. Nor is it the French Riviera or Lake Lugano. It’s inland Florida with neighbors on all sides.

2022’s 75 year old retirees were 45 in 1992 and 33 in 1980. Chances are many of them voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984 and George Bush in 1988.

Recession is coming. Much of the recent growth was due to covid stimulus. That’s mostly done and on top of that the FED is raising rates and tapering QE to try and get control of inflation. It’s going to get ugly.

The real estate market will take longer to crash because supply is really tight, but the current prices in many markets are unsustainable.

As an aside, you can get a nicer/bigger house on 5+ acres in NH or PA for about half the cost of that Florida Jetsons pad. Lower taxes too.

re: #39 Dread Pirate Ron

Thanks for raising my class consciousness.

67 lbs. is a very heavy bike. I don’t know how it compares to its fellow motorized cycles. The video you posted later doesn’t show the guy hoisting one into the rack. I carry my bike up 9 steps when I get home.

The non-motorized comparisons may have little relevance, but 30 RPM is a very low cadence. When I was selling bikes to newbies, i would recommend working towards 75 RPM. (Lance Armstrong can climb a hill at 100 RPM.) Higher RPMs are easier on the knees and give more endurance to the muscles. On an HPV, that relates directly to pedal pressure. They make power-meters to measure pressure at each point in the pedal stroke. They make cranks where the crankarm you just pushed down won’t swing up the back of the stroke unless you take ALL pressure off that crank. Pedal-stroke research has found that shorter cranks are always better (more efficient) no matter how long your legs are. I don’t think they found a lower limit.

Your bike has obviously been very good for you, where a non-motorized one approaches (or achieves) unfeasibility. You might have to move to make practical my eternal recommendation for a Human Powered Vehicle. Or I need to keep it to myself once in a while.

FDR and New Deal stuff was fine with them… as long as it was just the white people getting the benefits. The racism (and fear) has higher priority then the benefits of socialism, which they are still getting anyways.
