Since the death penalty was brought up.

A top Vietnamese property tycoon has been sentenced to death in one of the biggest corruption cases in history.

Truong My Lan, 67, will face death by lethal injection after a panel of three jurors and two judges rejected all defence arguments and found her guilty of swindling cash from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) over a decade.

The chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat was accused of fraud amounting to $12.5 billion (£10 billion) - nearly 3 per cent of the country’s 2022 GDP. But total damages have been estimated at $27 billion.

@texasobserver.org

An Indian chemical company, Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc., has purchased the last available #water supply from the Nueces River of South #Texas, raising concerns as reservoirs dwindle and drought persists.

Maybe we should be requiring these companies to make hydrogen from sea water.
rmit.edu.au.

“…Avina’s Nueces Green Ammonia plant plans to separate the hydrogen from water, convert it to ammonia and export it as a high-tech fuel alternative to oil and gas. It’s one of several such projects currently proposed in Texas, driven by federal subsidies. Governments and scientists say this technology plays an important role in the transition away from fossil fuels.

But officials in the nearby city of Corpus Christi have warned that the project could threaten the water supply for more than 600,000 regional customers.”
…..
“…Avina is one of at least 30 hydrogen and ammonia projects currently proposed in Texas, according to data from the Environmental Integrity Project, following federal legislation that laid out financial incentives for fossil fuel alternatives, aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gasses.”

I think it is more of a mitigation so it doesn’t catch fire before you can get the part replaced. Since it is cutting engine power I doubt it is meant to be operated in that manner, it is the equivalrnt of a donut spare tire. It is just meant to get you to the nearest service station.

I wonder how much this is related to Greg Abbott’s recent India visit, where he was drumming up support for Indian investments in Texas, at the same time there was a Republican-made “border crisis” on the southern border.

I wonder if there there is a better article for this? I looked at the article from my phone (because Texas observer is blocked by work for some weird reason), but it claimed liquid Hydrogen had to be stored at -500 Farhenheit. (spelling theirs), which is below absolute zero.)

it’s not that surprising, honestly. Ohtani has been a professional athlete since the age of 18 - which is around the time that he met Mizuhara. A lot of professional athletes surround themselves with people they trust and give them access to their personal affairs that most normal people wouldn’t. It allows the athlete to focus on their training and sport while others handle the basic business things in their lives. Mizuhara, it seems, abused that trust.

A lot of entertainers and athletes put trust/faith in people close to them to do right by them on financial matters. Yet we see people abuse that trust/faith all the time.

Is that the case here? Possibly.

But the amounts of money, the illegal sports book, and how/when the money left Ohtani accounts raise serious questions about who knew what and when, and whether it was theft or Ohtani knew what was going on because he was using his friend to place bets.

It is minus 423 so the word “about” in that article is doing some very heavy lifting. Of course that is at atmospheric pressure. Liquid hydrogen is generally stored under pressure so it doen’t need to be cooled so much. The problem with storing large amounts of volatile fuel at high pressure is fairly apparent though.

Sirens went off here too in the great 1st ring Twin Cities suburbia at the seemingly random time of 1:43pm on not a Wednesday.

Most likely explanation is a controlled test of the synchronization of vaccine nanoparticles with the 5G network.

Recent bond auction wasn’t good.

The Treasury sold $39 billion in re-opened 10-year notes at the highest yields since early November yet saw slumping demand from foreign and domestic investors following today’s hot March inflation report.

The sale drew bids worth just over $91.2 billion, generating a demand ratio of around 2.34, down from the 2.51 level recorded last month.

Dealers were forced to take around 24% of the sale, a huge increase from the 20% level last month and the ten-auction of 15%, as foreign investors backed-away from the auction even with the richer overall yields.

snip

Mortgage rates climbed past the 7% mark last week, according to data published Wednesday by the Mortgage Bankers’ Association, and are likely to accelerate further into the spring following today’s spike in 10-year bond yields that has the benchmark paper trading north of 4.5%.

In November of last year, when 10-year yields were last trading at that level, the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate was pegged at around 7.4% to 7.5%

She still needs considerable treatment. I don’t think she shaved her head, but plucked out the hairs.

The Slender Man stabber who nearly killed a classmate when she was 12-years-old is too dangerous to be released from a mental hospital, a court has heard.

Morgan Geyser, now 21, has requested to leave Winnebago Mental Health Institute on conditional release, 10 years after she was ordered to spend 40 years there over the 2014 stabbing of Payton Leutner, who was also 12 at the time.

But on Wednesday, two psychologists said doing so would be a bad idea, with one branding the would-be killer’s behavior as ‘callous’.

This is the main reason I’m against it. The evidence used to convict most on death row is frequently circumstantial…that leaves a LOT of room for doubt. Don’t get me started on eyewitness testimony and blood splatter analysis.

Edited to add…I remember one of the 60-minutes type programs featured a story where the perpetrator was wearing sunglasses while committing the crime. At trial, the defense attorney showed pictures of Hollywood stars with sunglasses on…several of them could not be identified by the jury. Got the defendant acquitted if I remember correctly.

Tennessee Republican’s fight against cousin marriage ban ends in massive defeat

The dream of legalized cousin marriage ended for one Tennessee state lawmaker on Thursday when his last-ditch bid to block the bill banning the practice went down in defeat.

Just absolute degenerate shit.

Many years ago I had a co-worker whose wife was an elementary school Principal in Oxnard and he once told me they got an annual breakdown from their favorite casino in the mail and she was putting about $100K on the line every year. It was a dependent relationship and she was the main bread winner so he just had to sit there and accept it but the whole situation was fucked.

Shall we peep in to see how a certain Jesusbot Arizona Senator who talks in tongues is really pissed off at people complaining about his little stunt of the floor of the State Senate?

Arizona GOP lawmaker lashes out at “god-haters” who criticized abortion ban prayer

State Sen. Anthony Kern (oh BTW—One of those FAKE ELECTORS) prayed in tongues for an abortion ban. Now his GOP colleagues are pretending they oppose it.

They wanted it so badly that, the day before the decision was announced, State Sen. Anthony Kern led a prayer circle on the floor of the Senate chamber, right on the state seal, where he and his deranged buddies spoke in tongues hoping for the result they would inevitably get. (It’s not clear who took and shared the video. Articles about it cite an anonymous source.)

While most of that is undecipherable Christian gibberish, Kern can be heard saying, “Let it be so, Father God… Lord, right now, we ask thee to release the presence of the Lord in the Senate chamber.” (It’s not like he was quoting Matthew 6:5-6.)

Is that a violation of church/state separation? Legally, no, probably not, but you can imagine the uproar if a representative of any other religion tried that shit.

After Jeanne Casteen, the executive director of Secular AZ, reposted that video (where it received much wider exposure), Kern responded by calling her and her allies “god-haters.”

No doubt but teams don’t like to be in news for anything but baseball-related activities. And as far as him actually placing bets, are there contractual rules in place barring players from betting on non-baseball sports? Given that teams have gone all-in with internet betting companies, putting ads up in the stadiums and on TV, it would hypocritical of them to not allow players to bet. But nothing new there.

I do realize there are some wealthy families who try to be responsible, empathetic and kind in how they move their money around in the world. I just wish they would maybe try to partner with communities more. I do see it happening more now, which give me hope. I have seen how hard it is to find help when life just falls apart, because crap happens to everyone, it is ridiculous and you have to have some resources before you can even find resources. I am not exaggerating. I spent months, I mean actual months, researching, calling, going to places to prove I am me, to get a front porch that was rotting off replaced, and a little less time finding another program that replaced my very old water heater and furnace at no cost. It shouldn’t be that hard. For anyone, to just have some basics available if needed OR maybe as a reward for a life time of hard work, in my husband’s case, and mine, physical labor and serving people in various ways you don’t have to starve to freaking death in an alley.

The amount of crap attitude and shaming that comes to you while looking for help sometimes is just a shitty reflection of what we call “community” in many, far too many places. No one is perfect and everyone has a story of how they got to today, it’s what you choose, your day to day actions and how you treat those less blessed than you that impresses me. A wealth tax and more of that money going to social security, education, child care options, healthcare and affordable housing would go far if properly used and administrated. Let parents who have to clip coupons for groceries and water down pasta sauce to make it go farther have a say in the budget.

Pro-Trump RFK Jr campaign staffer fired for ‘misrepresentation’

In other words Cuckoo For Cocoa Puffs fired her for spilling the beans.

Rita Palma, a Robert F. Kennedy Jr. presidential campaign New York State staffer and pro-Trump election denier who attended the pre-insurrection January 6, 2021 rally, has been terminated for “misrepresentation,” according to multiple news outlets and the campaign.

Palma made headlines earlier this week when unearthed video of her promoting a plan to “get rid” of President Joe Biden to help elect Donald Trump went viral.

Palma was identified as the campaign’s New York State director, but RFK Jr.’s national campaign manager, Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, on social media claimed Palma is “a ballot access consultant” and distanced the campaign from Palma’s remarks, saying she was “speaking as a private citizen and her statements in no way reflect campaign strategy.”

Fox Kennedy, CNN reports, “said on Wednesday that New York campaign staff member Rita Palma was fired after she told GOP voters in a meeting last week that preventing President Joe Biden’s victory was her ‘number one priority’ and encouraged them to volunteer for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.”

Fox Kennedy Wednesday night, in response to an RFK Jr. supporter angered by Palma’s remarks, wrote on X: “We terminated her contract for misrepresentation immediately upon seeing the longer video in which she gave an inaccurate job title and described a conversation that did not happen.”

Palma had told Kennedy supporters the goal is to use RFK. Jr. to block President Joe Biden from obtaining 270 Electoral College votes, throw the election to the Republican-majority House of Representatives, which she said would put Trump back in the White House. She also declared President Joe Biden the “enemy” of both the Trump voter and the “Bobby” Kennedy voter.

“We’re all on the same team right now, and we’ll be on the same team later, as long as Trump or Kennedy wins,” Palma said, CNN had reported. “If it’s Trump vs. Biden, Biden wins. Biden wins six days, seven days a week. With Bobby in the mix, anything can happen.”

Responding to the video, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison wrote: “As we have been saying… RFK Jr. = Trump,” and added, “They share the same donors… the same extremist agenda.”

Earlier this week CNN’s KFile reported Palma “previously promoted false claims that the 2020 election was rigged and attended ‘Stop the Steal’ rallies after the election, includingthe rally on January 6, 2021, in Washington, DC, that preceded the deadly riot at the US Capitol.”

we have wealth taxes in the US, just at the state level, and we call them “property taxes”. We don’t have them at the federal level because they’re considered direct taxes* and as such are required to be apportioned among the states by population. That makes it incredibly complicated to do.

*yes, I know that the most recent advocates for direct taxes have argued that wealth/property taxes are not direct taxes but they’re full of shit. Property taxes have always been understood to be direct taxes. And the question the advocates have never been able to answer is “if wealth/property taxes are not direct taxes, then what is a direct tax?”

re: #98 danarchy

Not the most stellar record.

Wealth taxes are awkward when the very rich are able to move their money around the world with impunity.

As NPR noted in 2019:

In 1990, twelve countries in Europe had a wealth tax. Today, there are only three: Norway, Spain, and Switzerland. According to reports by the OECD and others, there were some clear themes with the policy: it was expensive to administer, it was hard on people with lots of assets but little cash, it distorted saving and investment decisions, it pushed the rich and their money out of the taxing countries—and, perhaps worst of all, it didn’t raise much revenue.

That theme/story was then glommed onto by the usual suspects (e.g. CATO institute) as proof that wealth taxes are bad.

But I counter with this: why do the countries with wealth taxes still keep them? What does Norway and Switzerland know that the 10 European nations don’t?

That some nations have repealed wealth taxes strikes me as something that has been too quoted and not scrutinized enough.

A US wealth tax does not have to be too complicated.

‘Rubbish, you do not vote early!’ Mike Lindell goes ballistic at RNC election strategy

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell lashed out at the Republican National Committee for encouraging early voting and ballot harvesting.

During his Wednesday night show on FrankSpeech, Lindell said RNC attorney Charlie Spies might discourage Arizona Republicans from filing a brief supporting his Supreme Court case against voting machines.

“Well, I’m gonna tell you, if old Charlie blocks that, I will spend the rest of the year talking about the RNC like they’re just as bad as they were before,” he said, referring to former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel. “Because what they’ve done is that would be the worst thing you could do [to] not get behind that, this Supreme Court case.”

“That’s all we’re asking: you better get behind this, RNC. Every single GOP in the country, every single state should be filing an amicus brief,” he continued. “This isn’t about the stolen election. This is about future elections. We can’t have computers in our election.”

“I’m gonna say this now: they can sit there and say, oh, let’s go ballot harvest, like, and vote early like the Democrats. Rubbish, you do not vote early! You vote same day, everybody! I will be preaching that right up until the election day! You vote same day!” the pillow executive exclaimed. “Well, Mike, what if something happens like it did in Arizona, where 242 machines went down?”

“Well, you know what? The public won’t stand for this,” he added. “Why would you use the machines if you’re worried about that?”

Every tax has the same problem: enforcement.

In the US the income tax relies on people submitting tax documents.

People on the whole are not sociopaths, otherwise we would not be here.

Anyone who owns expensive items, in the US anyway, probably have said items insured.

So the person knows the insured value of the item.

Assets are already numerated.

And while the usual scaremongers will attack such a tax, claiming the IRS wants to take your grandmother’s diamond engagement ring, in reality a workable wealth tax can target well defined assets and valuables.

The saying used to be Old Money doesn’t talk about money while New Money is physically incapable of shutting the fuck up about it. So the Old Money aesthetic was always about quiet confidence and generous stealthy giving without much fanfare. It was always more myth than reality but enough wealthy families at least aspired to that level of magnanimity that the myth had legs.

Feels like a lot of that is just went extinct after Reagan and the 1980’s, the rise of Trump and the entire extreme spectacle of flaunting wealth and consumption that followed.

we have wealth taxes in the US, just at the state level, and we call them “property taxes”.

We used to have federal estate taxes, but we barely do anymore. The estate has to be over 13 million before it kicks in. And I suspect people over 13 million avoid it with trusts and such.

Well, if your god hates LBGTQ+, wants women to be chattel/cattle, is cool with migrants dying at the border, and is generally xenophobic, yeah, fuck that dude. I hate it.

Yep. Also the $13 million estate exemption is scheduled to get cut in half at the end of 2025 so if Trump loses we’re probably going to see an absolute shit ton of Nevada Irrevocable Spendthrift Trusts getting created next year.

Unlike a lot of billionaires who make their money from investments, most pro athletes are taxed as income and pay the top rate. I am sure there are plenty of accounting tricks and tax write offs and deferrals and carried losses and what not to minimize it, but it isn’t like they are paying a lower rate than their personal assistants at least.

They also have to pay taxes in every state they play games in. Ohtani also likely has additional tax obligations in Japan.

He’s still ungodly rich, but this isn’t like hedge fund managers worth billions who pay stupidly low marginal rates for zero reason.

Taylor Swift just exceeded 1 billion dollar net worth. But similarly she works for it and pays taxes on it. It doesn’t stick in my craw like hedge fund managers. Not that I don’t support higher marginal tax rates, but I’d trade that for taxing capital gains a reasonable amount

What would a Friday THURSDAY Afternoon News Dump be without yet another Rudy fuckup?

HOLY CRAP READING THAT PUT MY MIND IN A TIME WARP!

Rudy Giuliani’s defense fund could lose massive donation over new lawsuit

A lawsuit filed in Georgia seeks to recover a $100,000 donation to Rudy Giuliani’s legal defense fund. The donation came from Matthew Martorano, a Donald Trump supporter accused of participating in an online skincare product scam.

The lawsuit alleges that the donation should be returned to victims of the alleged fraud, according to CNBC. Martorano’s software was accused of helping the scammers hide the number of chargebacks they received, which is a sign of potential fraud.

Giuliani’s spokesperson said the lawsuit was unrelated to their client. Lawyers for Martorano and the other defendants did not respond to requests for comment, CNBC said.

The Georgia suit follows a federal lawsuit that certified a nationwide class against the alleged skin care sales scammers at Konnektive LLC. The judge in that case wrote that the plaintiff “has shown by a preponderance of the evidence that Konnektive Defendants deceived banks and credit card companies.”

On the death penalty:

If it ever comes back here to Canada I’m going to lobby for two things.

1) The method of execution will be a 9mm pistol bullet in the back of the skull.

2) The method of choosing an executioner will be conscription. Anyone who can vote might get a letter that reads, “At this date and time you will be at this prison where you will kill this person.”

I’ve suggested such a thing in other debates about the death penalty and the number of supporters who are suddenly, “I’m not a killer!” is astounding.

Also, the death penalty isn’t revenge, it’s politics. It’s telling people that they have threatened those in power and it is not an action those in power will allow to stand. It’s a warning, “Sit down and shut up. Or else.”

Another problem our society is facing, and will have to correct eventually, is that of the fictitious person.

While rooted deeply in our laws and society, the simple reality is that our creation of fictitious persons has created a labyrinth of social ills.

I suspect that a federal wealth tax will be found unconstitutional (especially by the current Court.)

And thus an Amendment will be needed, as it was for income taxes.

Kardashian clan stay making it all about themselves.

Jenner described Simpson as “the most narcissistic, egocentric, neediest a— in the world of sports I had ever seen,” in the 2017 memoir, “The Secrets of My Life,” per the Washington Post.

Uh huh … cool … I mean it feels like there’s a fair bit of projection at play but … cool.

Her name was Kim Howe. 5 other people were injured.

Jenner should have been charged but wasn’t. She blamed a pack of feral paparazzi for the accident.
Er, no, Caitlyn, paparazzi are a low form of life but they are not terrorists or assassins so you have no right to endanger yourself or others in your attempts to avoid them.
