Whenever I hear about brain worms, I think of the great sci-fi classic, The Hidden

Great cast, cars, flamethrowers and strippers. Lots of action. And a cool idea that would certainly explain much.

The Hidden is an underappreciated genre film. It didn’t last long in theaters and like many who’ve seen it, I discovered it later on home video.

It seemed to just disappear, even though I think it is one of Kyle MacLachlan’s best. ANd it played it really straight for much of it. Plus it has some really creepy scenes that are not forgotten soon.

I wonder if it is streamable form somewhere?

Good question. It could be one of those flicks still only available on physical media. IIRC, there was a BluRay release a few years back.

I remember seeing it back in the day on the Scifi Channel when their lineup was mostly old scifi B-movies and reruns of syndicated scifi series from the 70s and 80s. You know, sort of like how ESPN used to have to broadcast any “sport” they could get their hands on, so that you found yourself watching regional cheerleading competitions or little league softball tournaments because there were no other “sports” on in the dead of night.

Nicaragua cancels Chinese plan for controversial canal 10 years on

Nearly a decade after it broke ground on a controversial plan to build a canal linking the Atlantic and the Pacific, Nicaragua has canceled a concession granted to a Chinese businessman to complete the project which critics said would endanger the environment and displace rural communities.

That’s a big development in the world of logistics.

I’m hoping the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec which will use trains to move from one ocean to another, finds success. Waiting just to get into the Canal can take 20 days. The railroad would hopefully shorten this. And it is much closer to US ports than Panama.

A New York State Supreme Court judge blocked a possible abortion rights amendment from appearing on the November ballot.

Democrats passed the Equal Rights Amendment in 2023, which was intended to protect abortion rights and a person’s right to seek gender-affirming care. A state supreme court justice ruled that lawmakers did not follow state rules for approving a constitutional amendment.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said she will appeal the decision.

Which is why it must be commanded and controlled. FDR Style populism worked because it directly addressed head-on the most pressing issues facing the majority of Americans, and while not eliminating the overt racism common in that time period, did at least offer distraction and common cause away from racist policies being a solution to the problems.

MAGA has and will continue to offer up 100% racist policies as solutions for the common man.

As Donald Trump sat with some of the country’s top oil executives at his Mar-a-Lago Club last month, one executive complained about how they continued to face burdensome environmental regulations despite spending $400 million to lobby the Biden administration in the last year,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump’s response stunned several of the executives in the room overlooking the ocean: You all are wealthy enough, he said, that you should raise $1 billion to return me to the White House. At the dinner, he vowed to immediately reverse dozens of President Biden’s environmental rules and policies and stop new ones from being enacted.”

“Giving $1 billion would be a ‘deal,’ Trump said, because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him.”

“Trump’s remarkably blunt and transactional pitch reveals how the former president is targeting the oil industry to finance his reelection bid.”

When you own words come back to haunt you…

A federal judge used the words of conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to shoot down an effort to dismiss lawsuits challenging right-wing Alabama prosecutions.

“An elective abortion performed in Alabama would be a criminal offense; thus, a conspiracy formed in the State to have that same act performed outside the State is illegal,” Marshall’s office wrote.

This week, U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson denied the motion, reported Newsweek.

He used the words written by Kavanaugh in his concurring opinion in the ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.

Thompson wrote that the state, “cannot constitutionally prosecute people for acts taken within the State meant to facilitate lawful out of state conduct, including obtaining an abortion.”

Then he referenced Kavanaugh, who said out-of-state travel for procedures was covered by “the constitutional right to interstate travel.”

Alabama “can no more restrict people from going to, say, California to engage in what is lawful there than California can restrict people from coming to Alabama to do what is lawful here. In this sense, the case is not an ‘especially difficult call,’” Thompson wrote.

The line to get into court for day 2 of the Stormy testimony is much longer than yesterday. More fireworks to be expected, though the day 1 testimony still hit Trump hard because it moved the needle forward on the prosecution case of showing that this was about preventing the news of the affair/relationship from being made public. Today’s cross isn’t going to help Trump, but his defense lawyers have been browbeaten into doing this because Trump demands it, regardless of the damage it is doing to his own defense.

His defense theories for why this was a legit expense, not criminal, etc., fall apart under scrutiny, and nothing they’ve elicited from the witnesses to date undermines the prosecution case.

I was really busy at work Tuesday and only paid minimal attention to Stormy’s testimony online. I think that is how I’ll do it again today…the biggest risk for the prosecution is her deciding she wants her pound of flesh and blowing up the trial by taking it to Don from the stand. Also a small risk from Cohen. Revenge is never a rational act.

Here’s hoping none of that happens and it gets back to boring documented fraud quickly.

And here again, we see the stark difference between the parties. Witness prep for trial testimony is an artform, and prosecutors are well versed in dealing with witnesses who are combative, unwilling to testify, or want to put the screws to a defendant by any means necessary, even if it may blow up the prosecution case.

I’m sure that prosecutors spoke with her before she takes the stand again, to make sure that she answers truthfully, doesn’t embellish with details that aren’t critical to the case, and sticks to the questions asked and doesn’t go beyond it.

Defense team is hoping to get her to spew something sufficient to cause a mistrial, but I don’t see that happening after Merchan ruled on Tuesday.

After she is done with her testimony, not sure who prosecutors call next, but it might just be Cohen. He’s the other central figure involved in the payment scheme besides Trump.

Despite it all, a recent Pew Research Center survey showed that two-thirds of white evangelical Protestants have a favorable view of Trump.

For years now, many Christians have sought to justify supporting Trump using various rationalizations, including comparing him to King David, a flawed man who committed serious transgressions yet was used mightily by God.

Never mind that Trump never repented for his sins or even sought to change his ways; the gist was that God can use flawed vessels to accomplish His plans.

Interestingly, though, this argument seems to have morphed (in some quarters, at least) into a more sinister theory: that sexual sin isn’t just a stumbling block that can be overcome, it is proof of a man’s masculinity and even worthiness to be used by God.

At least, that was my takeaway from a recent Politico interview with Samuel L. Perry, a sociologist of religion and author of the book Addicted to Lust: Pornography in the Lives of Conservative Protestants. He contends that many evangelicals see Trump as a “representative of a kind of masculinity that is so masculine that his sexual appetites cannot be contained. That’s almost a good sign,” Parry says.

Plenty of (self-declared) Democrats see Republicans as the enemy, and it is easy to find that all over the internet.

However, elected Democrats tend to want to get legislation done, as a central part of the current Democratic Party ideology, even if not written explicitly in some manifesto, is that the government needs to help people and regulate enterprises (public and private.)

And to do that means making deals to pass legislation in chambers in which the Dems do not control veto-proof majorities.

The GOP is currently controlled by atavists who are very much near anarchists when it comes to a federal government.

Yes, and that is very clearly a continued march from evangelical Christianity to a Nationalistic Religion.

Anybody with a seminary degree can tell you that the current American religious right’s love of Trump is about as far from the historical doctrines as one can get.

Indeed, pastors and preachers have commented that they walk a fine line in some of their congregations on this matter.

The pew sitters are turning into a rabble.

And while that is not new, I think we should take note the evangelical leadership is now being wagged by a tail of nationalist fervor .

Before entering the courtroom, Trump claims Jews aren’t true Americans if they vote for Biden. Supermajority of Jews vote for Biden. So yeah, he’s making a dual loyalties argument if you don’t support him, even as his own policies aided Hamas.

Wonder how much longer it’ll be before “Die Juden sind unser Unglück” makes it into the GOP platform.

Oy Vey. Most Jews in the USA vote Democratic because that is what they have been doing for decades (if not longer). Furthermore the Democratic Party has been far more open minded in accepting individuals from every segment of society.

Thinking of picking up a 2014 iMac as an interim solution (until Apple puts out a decent/affordable alternative with the new M4 or the coming-in-2025 2nm chips).

They can be had at low enough prices and the RAM is upgradeable and with an SSD for a boot device I hope the performance will be fine.

It’s hard to beat the Apple displays in these iMacs, for the price.

Was thinking about a Mac Mini, but a decent 4K monitor costs as much as an old 4K iMac.

That there is still a thriving market for 7 year old iMacs is a testament itself to how well these things were designed.

Only thing I fear is if buying an older machine also means there is some flaw hiding under the surface.

AFAIK, ESPN still shows cheerleading and the interminable little league tournaments. Maybe not as much as they used to before pro sports seasons started to last almost the entire year. I do think, however, they’ve eliminated those exciting spelling bee contests.

Air Senegal flight HC 301 bound for the Malian capital Bamako went off the runway in the early hours of Thursday, Dakar’s Blaise Diagne airport said in a statement.

The pilot was slightly injured, but most of the 78 passengers on board were not hurt in the incident.

I was in the UK for two years for work. Watched the darts on BBC (and snooker - that was captivating as I played a lot of pool then). When they interviewed the defending dart champion before his big match, they filmed him in his hotel room, his wife ironing his shirt for the competition, and he was sitting on the bed drinking a pint and smoking a cigarette. I thought, Now, that’s some athletic discipline!

You kinda have to love Stormy:

“You have a lot of experience making phony stories about sex appear to be real?” Necheles asked, suggesting that Daniels made up the details of her sexual encounter with Trump.

“Wow,” Daniels said, then added: “If that story were untrue, I would have written it to be a lot better.”

89
lawhawk  May 9, 2024 • 8:02:50am

Trump’s lawyers are having a bad time of crossing Daniels IMO. This particular exchange isn’t a good look:

Inner City Press
@innercitypress
Trump’s lawyer Necheles: On Twitter you celebrated and tried to sell merchandise in your online store, right? You have a store?
Stormy Daniels: Sure.
Necheles: You wrote, Don’t want to spill my champagne, merch orders pouring in, right
Daniels: Yes
Inner City Press
@innercitypress

Trump’s lawyer Necheles: This was you shilling your merch, right?
Stormy Daniels: I am doing my job. Not unlike Mr. Trump.
Necheles: Your merchandise is you bragging getting President Trump indicted, right?
Daniels: *I* got President Trump indicted?

So, she can’t shill products, but Trump can, including selling pieces of the suit he wore to his criminal booking. She’s not the one on trial, but Necheles is doing a great job of trying to make it as though she’s the one who engaged in malfeasance. It’s just how Trump operates.

She might think that some of this somehow undermines Daniels’ veracity as a witness to events or that her memory is off somehow, but there’s enough contemporaneous evidence and paperwork that backs her testimony. In the end, this is not going to harm the prosecution case.

PCMag: Neuralink’s First Brain Implant Patient Now Beats Friends in Video Games

Speaking as a biomedical engineer, they buried the important news:

One interesting development is that Arbaugh’s use of the implant improved even though “a number of threads retracted” from the chip. These threads are crucial since they contain electrodes that can detect neural signals, allowing the chip to convert them into cursor movement.

This is after only 3 months and the device is already failing in the environment. The brain actually moves a lot in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). One hard brake at 60 mph has a good chance of rendering the device into a brick which no software upgrade can fix. Downplaying the safety concerns, like PCMag does here, is horrific.

For all of the sound and fury coming from Trump’s defense team, they didn’t get what they needed out of Daniels today - she didn’t come across as a liar or a cheat. She didn’t do this for the money. And they can’t pin any of this on her - it’s still on Trump for why he paid her the money, and why Trump signed off on the checks/reimbursements through his convoluted scheming.

Following up on earlier things he’s said in the same vein, he’s…not doing a dual loyalty argument of “are with us or are you with Israel.” He’s doing the argument that Ben Shapiro makes “if you are liberal you are neither with America nor Israel.”

Since the start of his political career, Donald Trump has played on stereotypes about Jews and politics.

He told the Republican Jewish Coalition in 2015 that “you want to control your politicians” and suggested the audience used money to exert control. In the White House, he said Jews who vote for Democrats are “very disloyal to Israel.”

That’s been the norm in conservative circles for awhile now: Jews that don’t support conservatism domestically and in Israel are “not real Jews.” The followup to in the most aggressively reactionary sectors of the right is that classic antisemitic conspiracies, such as the Frankfort School and Soros-Rothschild Illuminati, have been redirected toward “secular Jews” who are seen as a distinct population that merits scrutiny.

Defense ends their cross of Daniels.

Prosecutors call Rebecca Manochio, who is a Trump Org bookkeeper under Weisselberg. Her testimony will go to process, how checks are handled and paid out. Checks were sent to WH by FedEx for signature.

Umm… yeah..

So, weren’t his male moron progeny supposed to be running the business while he was in office? I thought he made a point of highlighting that several times.

re: #130 The Ghost of a Flea

This might wind up being the dumbest and most hyped cruel architecture in history.
According to some of the footsoldiers:

a spokesperson for Neom stated: “Zero Gravity Urbanism is revolutionary and perhaps unimaginable, particularly when seen through the lens of the past and in light of existing failed urban models.

“With the current environmental crisis and the shortcomings of our cities to deliver on human needs, a solution this innovative becomes a necessity deserving to be delivered with unwavering commitment,” they added.

………………
Safely distant architects:

Cook and his studio CHAP, are one of several studios reportedly working on The Line. Other studios featured in the exhibition in Venice included Morphosis, Adjaye Associates, Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and Studio Fuksas. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Studio Fuksas founders Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas explained their designs for The Line.

“Interestingness in architecture is very important”

I am missing the darts league stuff - where their announces were calling 180 after 3 triple 20s. But that was on BBC America.

It’s over on Ocho, along with the dodgeball. accch! completely missed the Ocho reference had already been taken. Oh well.
