The Republican Planned Parenthood Committee - Yet Another Political Witch Hunt

Stacked with anti-choice fanatics
Politics • Views: 60,247
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN)

On Friday, House Speaker John Boehner announced the eight Republican members of the new “Select Investigative Panel” the GOP is launching to continue their election-season persecution of Planned Parenthood and other women’s health providers. Would you be surprised to learn that all eight of them are anti-choice fanatics? Or that all eight of them received 100% ratings from the extreme anti-choice National Right to Life Committee?

And you thought the Benghazi committee was bad.

Samantha Lachman at Huffington Post has a helpful run-down of the latest Republican sham investigation.

“Recent videos exposing the abortion-for-baby-parts business have shocked the nation, and demanded action,” Boehner said in a statement. “At my request, three House committees have been investigating the abortion business, but we still don’t have the full truth. Chairman [Marsha] Blackburn and our members will have the resources and the subpoena power to get to the bottom of these horrific practices, and build on our work to protect the sanctity of all human life.”

Planned Parenthood responded to the announcement by saying that it is cooperating with the investigations even though they are the result of “false and discredited claims.”

“Regardless of whether these investigations are focused on uncovering facts or pursuing a political agenda, we will continue to share the facts with all of these committees, which include that fetal tissue donation for medical research is an important but tiny part of Planned Parenthood’s work in just two states, that we’ve had guidance in place for more than a decade that goes well beyond the legal requirements, and that even doctored and discredited videos show no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood,” said Eric Ferrero, the organization’s vice president for communications.

Democrats have not yet decided whether they’re going to boycott this absurd, dishonest panel. The Republican fanatics appointed by Boehner (see the article linked above for details on their shabby anti-choice records):

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.)
Rep. Joe Pitts (Penn.)
Rep. Diane Black (Tenn.)
Rep. Larry Bucshon (Ind.)
Rep. Sean Duffy (Wis.)
Rep. Andy Harris (Md.)
Rep. Vicky Hartzler (Mo.)
Rep. Mia Love (Utah)

At this point, its best to assume any cause championed by the GOP is a partisan witch hunt aimed at either scoring political points and/or hurting as many Americans as possible

Dems can’t boycott it. There would be no sane counterpoint and the right’s message would be the only one. Likely live on tv all day.

I tweeted that to the head dem. I hope they listen.

Imagine the Hillary shit show without Cummings or the other dems. One sane voice isn’t enough.

I think the Democrats should boycott the committee until the issue of the video leak is resolved.

Let’s say it’s Richards and the GOP inquisition with no dems present. All day long we’d hear about the videos, with no one but Richards, whom they’d say had a vested financial interest, saying the videos are edited and bogus.

It would make hundreds of right wing sound bites with nothing factual to counter. Sadly, Richards “testimony” wouldn’t count.

Of course it’s going to be a witch hunt. Did you expect anything different? The GOP and right wing is out to destroy PP, and deny women access to health care - especially birth control and abortion services.

That the videos are BS is immaterial at this point. The GOP has their goal, and they’ll do anything to move towards their ultimate goal.

For Democrats, the choice is simple: use their presence on the committee to show that this is a witch hunt at every opportunity.

Ignoring the panel or boycotting it is not a sound strategy since it would give the GOP unfettered and complete control over the sound bites - after all these hearings are as much about Congressmembers hearing their own voices as the answers given by the witnesses called to testify.

Open your heart to the hard life of Donald Trump.

“It has not been easy for me. It has not been easy for me,” Donald Trump said Monday morning during a televised town hall on the “Today” show. What hadn’t been easy? His career.

“I started off in Brooklyn,” he explained. “My father gave me a small loan. … I came into Manhattan and I had to pay him back, and I had to pay him back with interest.”

The small loan? We took the number out of that quote for effect. It was a small loan of $1 million.

Wha-da-holy-shit! A Christian male how-to guide for getting off during marital rape:

Christian website that gives advice to couples about how to live by the Bible’s “gender roles” recently advised men that they should not look at their wives’ faces during sex if she engaged in intercourse “begrudgingly.”

In a column on the biblicalgenderroles.com website last week, a writer going by the name Larry Solomon argued that men “should not tolerate refusal.”

“So like the men who could not look at Medusa’s face otherwise they would be killed, realize that if you look on your wife’s face when she is displaying a sinful attitude toward sex it will kill your sexual pleasure and may actually make it much more difficult for you to achieve the physical connection and release that you need,” he concluded. “Sometimes we have to work around the sinful behavior of our wives and this will be one of those times.”

In a column earlier this year, Solomon insisted that there was “no such thing as marital rape.” A wife, he said, could ask her husband to delay sex for a short period of time but the request “must be done humbly and respectfully, and always with the attitude in mind that her body does belong to her husband.”

This one’s a couple days old but dovetails nicely into grotesque Christian misogyny:

This blushing bride proved that she waited until marriage — presenting her dad with a “certificate of purity” on her wedding day.

Brelyn Bowman wanted to show her dad, a prominent pastor in Maryland, that she was still a virgin before she said “I do” to her longtime boy toy at a lavish ceremony Oct. 10 that included more than 3,500 people.

To make her innocence official, Bowman took matters into her own hands.

“I was able to present a certificate of purity to [my dad] signed by my doctor that my hymen was still intact,” Bowman wrote on her Instagram page along with a photo of her first dance with her old man at the wedding.

Actually you take a two-prong attack with the Rage Furby: (1) MoFo subpoenas his computers and phone records and (2) He is hauled before the Select PP Committee and asked which Congressional staffer gave him the videos-if he refuses, he is found in Contempt on Congress and held in custody by the Sergeant At Arms.

So instead of becoming the story and swinging his manhood around, he becomes the pawn in a much larger game.

From 1972 to 1982, Sheldon Nadelman worked as a bartender at the “roughest bar in town”—Terminal Bar, directly across from the Port Authority. When he wasn’t pouring drinks, Nadelman was taking photographs of his patrons. He had good material: as one regular put it, “through these doors pass some of the most miserable people on Earth.” Over 10 years, Nadelman made more than 1,500 black and white portraits of bouncers and boxers, actors and cooks, businesspeople and hustlers.

Exclusive: Feds Investigate Hobby Lobby Boss for Illicit Artifacts

One of America’s most famously Christian businesses is amassing a vast collection of Biblical antiquities. The problem is some of them may have been looted from the Middle East.

In 2011, a shipment of somewhere between 200 to 300 small clay tablets on their way to Oklahoma City from Israel was seized by U.S. Customs agents in Memphis. The tablets were inscribed in cuneiform—the script of ancient Assyria and Babylonia, present-day Iraq—and were thousands of years old. Their destination was the compound of the Hobby Lobby corporation, which became famous last year for winning a landmark Supreme Court case on religious freedom and government mandates. A senior law enforcement source with extensive knowledge of antiquities smuggling confirmed that these ancient artifacts had been purchased and were being imported by the deeply-religious owners of the crafting giant, the Green family of Oklahoma City. For the last four years, law enforcement sources tell The Daily Beast, the Greens have been under federal investigation for the illicit importation of cultural heritage from Iraq.

Seriously? I’m surrounded by these people. Just about everyone I know thinks like this. Many have varying degrees of post high school education, and are fairly intelligent.

Yet, when you point out the fucking idiocy like this that the GOP does on a daily basis, they recoil in horror at the mere suggestion that one party is worse than the other. “Don’t be stupid. The Democrats do stuff like this all the time!”, they confidentially bleat.

They are the reason why people like George W. Bush; Chris Christie; Ted Cruz; and Michelle Bachmann get elected. They’re the reason a President Trump is an actual, real danger.

Because they cannot or will not accept the fact that one of our major political parties has utterly fallen to pieces, fucking up the country in the process.

Love that squash and pork dish. Looks seriously tasty.

It came out real well.

The squash was cooked in a separate pan (chopped and then tossed with some salt, pepper, and olive oil). Onion, parsnips, and carrots were chopped and tossed with salt, thyme, rosemary, paprika and olive oil. All the vegetables got about 20 minutes in the oven before the pork tenderloin and a sliced apple were added to that dish. Everything was then left in the oven for another 20-30 minutes until the pork reached the right temp and everything else was tender. Let the pork rest for five minutes before carving some off.

Plenty of leftovers, so I’ll probably make pork wraps or something in the next few days. :)

Well, my third attempt with the bread machine this morning came out edible. A bit moist and heavy but the recipe indicated that was probable and a few moments in the toaster solves many problems  Still, the nice news is that getting one loaf out that actually is like it’s supposed to be means that if I follow the recipes as carefully, I can probably get something to bake that’s a bit more to my taste. Just so I can avoid the bricks :D

I’m on commercial break right now. Piping in.

[Embedded content]

I don’t want to click on the fox or Washington Examiner link, but I’m not really feeling much sympathy for the Muslim workers. It does sound like the company was being an ass, but I think any accommodation for religion should be that it doesn’t otherwise affect their ability to do an assigned job. A hijab doesn’t affect many jobs so it should be allowed. Not wanting to deliver beer? I’m just not feeling it.

Edit: I will add that the company should be punished because it did target one group. I’m just going to have trouble with expecting to work but be able to opt-out of some tasks for religious reasons.

Pretty much.

I wish I could put sarc tags on that. The problem with cops is, as I mentioned earlier, there is NO ONE to put a check on their power. Judges won’t do it, DAs, won’t do it, Police Unions won’t do it, Politicians won’t do it.

They pretty much have free reign to do whatever the fuck they want.

I bought a Zojirushi mini bread maker from King Arthur Flour. The recipe book that came with it just didn’t make the bread good but I did tinker with the recipe, (replacing dry milk with half and half), increased the yeast and reduced the salt. It makes incredible whole wheat bread especially with King Arthur flour. Sure would recommend it to anyone!

You want hardcore sourdough? I make up my dough and stick it in the back of the refrigerator for a week. It doesn’t rise particularly well at that point so I dissolve a bit of yeast in water and knead it in before I let it rise again before baking.

Why do I do this you ask? Because my hubby is gluten intolerant or maybe celiac (he’s never been formally tested) and evidently the lactobacilli breaks down the gliadin component of the gluten enough that he can eat it. But it does come out really sour.

If your sourdough starter can be revived, you can save it for future use by spreading some out on a piece of waxed paper and letting it dry, then wrap it well and freeze it. It will keep for at least a year in the freezer.

There is a YOOGE industry in antiquities forgery in Israel. You have to wonder why they find so many “Jesus souvenirs” compared to random shit from other centuries.

Yeah, my question would have been where (and why) did a dealer in Israel get a hoard of tablets like that - even assuming they are real, and not baked up by Cousin Shmuli in his backyard kiln last year - the whole think stinks of “war loot” (or “scam”) even at a remove.
But then, wealthy fundamentalists have been a shady dealer’s dream-client for centuries, probably: I wouldn’t be surprised if the “Museum of the Bible” hasn’t been offered enough “fragments of the True Cross” to make a telephone pole. And signed pieces, too…

I’m not sure someone with severe celiac should try it, but for many people it might be worth a try. Gluten free bread is either full of eggs and way too rich, or rather dry and crumbly. There’s a reason why people make bread out of wheat flour.

Other than people with celic, who are about 1% of the population, there is no reason why otherwise healthy people should go “gluten free.” It’s another fad, like the “carb free” and “fat free” craze.

BTW many “fat free” versions of popular processed foods actually contain more calories than the “fat included” because of all the sugar they use to replace the fat.

Perfectly true, although there is some debate as to whether there is gluten intolerance is a milder form of celiac or they are two different conditions. Allow me to assure you that we wouldn’t be fooling around with all this stuff if my husband hadn’t discovered after several decades of painful digestive issues, that it is gluten that caused the problems. Of course, once you eliminate gluten you become more sensitive to it. Sigh. It make it difficult to eat out because there is wheat in everything.

edit: I am grateful for the gluten free craze as it makes it easier to find food Mr. C. can eat.

One of my son’s friends really is seriously celic and allergic to a shitload of food stuffs. His parents both have varying degrees of the same giving a strong hint of genetic incidence but still. In the end if someone tells me they want gluten free, I’d respect it to the best of my ability as I would do if someone needed a kosher meal (though I know the only thing I could do that was completely kosher would be a hard boiled egg that I’d candled to make sure was not fertilized).

The Catholic Encyclopedia[13] and other hagiographical sources[14] speak of three Saint Valentines that appear in connection with February 14. One was a Roman priest, another the bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) both buried along the Via Flaminia outside Rome, at different distances from the city. The third was said to be a saint who suffered on the same day with a number of companions in the Roman province of Africa, for whom nothing else is known.

There usually is, with relics. My favorite relic story is one about the medieval Pope who was confronted with the problem of judging between two competing churches, both of whom claimed to own the severed head of St. John the Baptist. Noting that one skull was notably bigger than the other, he ruled that the smaller skull was the head of St. John as an adolescent: the larger one was the saint as a grown man. Problem solved!

PA Supreme Court candidate suggested lesbians provoke men into shooting them by ‘fondling each other’

The Philadelphia Daily News reported on Monday the state Supreme Court candidate Mike George’s defense of Stephen Roy Carr suggested that the two lesbians “might’ve brought the shooting on themselves.”

After Carr killed 28-year-old Rebecca Wight and shot her girlfriend, Claudia Brenner, in 1988, George set out to “get the local folks talking more about the lesbianism than the murder.”

“That’s why we had to get all the steamy facts of what had happened up on South Mountain out before the public. Sort of let what happened simmer in the public’s imagination,” the attorney later told Harold Pohlman, the author of the book The Whole Truth? A Case of Murder on the Appalachian Trail.

One refrain goes:

“Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let’s Marvin Gaye and get it on.”

I don’t know anything about Chris Puth, other than he sounds like a boy-band singer. Meghan Trainor inflicted the “All About the Bass” annoyance on the world last year or the year before.

re: #44 Big Beautiful Door

it is almost certain that the Committee will abuse its subpoena power to obtain confidential information from Planned Parenthood then leak misleading information to the press and quite possibly leak confidential information to terrorist organizations like Operation Rescue to enable harassment of doctors, employees and possibly patients.

I’d bet that those raids of PP in Texas last week are directly related to these hearings. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if they were carried out at the behest of either Cruz or Abbott.

Need people to go to that committee and talk about their YEAST INFECTIONS.

re: #248 Reality Based Steve

An acquaintance of mine posted this on facebook, with the caption, “Is this the greatest picture ever?”. I would like to say that it was an ironic attempt at RWNJ Humor, but, sadly, she fully believes that it’s great.

Have a good evening. See ya later on.

I did have to self-censor on FB tonight. Another acquaintance (a customer at the shop) is always doing the “woe is me” and “I’m so over trusting people” posts, we’ve simply grown to ignore them.

Now she is on a “I’m totally moving to Australia” kick. I had to force myself NOT to post a “What if you move to another country on a different continent, in a different hemisphere and people still didn’t like you because you’re still a passive-aggressive high maintenance psycho-bitch” Figured it wouldn’t be prudent.

Now I’m off to bed.

Later Gators.

re: #212 The Vicious Babushka

Other than people with celic, who are about 1% of the population, there is no reason why otherwise healthy people should go “gluten free.”

Not true. Many people without celiac disease are allergic to wheat. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) can be caused by wheat. With EoE the esophagus swells and can prevent swallowing. Ending up in the emergency room unable to swallow is not a fad.
