LETRA
I’ve tried to write a million other songs but
Somehow I can’t move on, oh you’re gone
Takes time, alright & I know it’s no one’s fault but
Somehow I can’t move on, oh you’re gone

Saudade, saudade
Nothing more that I can say says it in a better way
Saudade, saudade
Nothing more that I can say says it in a better way

Tem tanto que trago comigo, foi sempre o meu porto de abrigo
E agora nada faz sentido, perdi o meu melhor amigo
E se não for demais, peço por sinais, resta uma só palavra
Peço por sinais, resta uma só palavra

Saudade, saudade
Nothing more that I can say says it in a better way
Saudade, saudade
Nothing more that I can say says it in a better way
Nothing more that I can say says it in a better way
(3x)

V3
I’ve tried, alright, but it’s killing me inside
Thought you’d be by my side always

If/when Biden gets to name Thomas’ replacement, I really hope he picks Childs, just to watch Graham twist himself in knots trying to explain why after pushing so hard for her, he suddenly can’t justify even giving her a hearing, much less a vote.

Not any longer, because the replacement has to be made before the November election, when the GOP may regain control of the Senate.

She’s incredible. I loved that Cory Booker made her laugh and cry. One of the best moments was when he talked about not letting anyone steal his joy over her nomination.

I was so fucking disgusted with republicans after the last two days it’s hard to put into words. I thought they were awful going into these hearings, but they managed to be even more awful than usual. Democrats need to use this behavior against them. It needs to be amplified and they need to be made to defend it. While life goes on. While we move forward. When people show us who they are we have GOT to believe them.

I like to say, based on driving habits here in the DFW area, that women and minorities aren’t necessarily better than white men, it’s just that the pool of possible candidates will be larger and therefore we’ll have a better chance of getting the right person in whatever position we need.

The Democratic primary had 13 candidates; he received 31% of the votes and then, under ranked voting, he ended up with a majority. There is almost always a problem when there are too many contenders for an office. Adams also had the best message, especially given the uptick in crime and his background as a police officer.

Femininity. Five syllables.

Sorry, I just sat through an hour-long video essay on an old anime where the youtuber pronounced that word the way you wrote it, with only four syllables (and “chutzpah” pronounced with the “ch” in “chair” meshed with the short “u” of “Utz” brand potato chips) and I’m still wincing in pain over it.

“Even though some parts of the immune response wane, we can now see that T cells recognizing the virus are quite stable over time. After more than a year, they were still roughly 10-fold higher than someone who had never been exposed to the spike protein through infection or vaccination,” said Dr. Juno.

While B cells are responsible for producing the antibodies that recognize SARS-CoV-2, T cells play a crucial role in supporting the development of the B cell response. Without T cell help, B cells are unable to produce high amounts of antibodies that can bind to the virus and stop infection.

I’ve yet to see any evidence in an uptick in crime that isn’t caused by playing games with statistics around the COVID shutdowns.

Not saying there isn’t, but the caterwauling about a spike in crime is generally coming from people who I wouldn’t trust if they told me the sky was blue. So I remain skeptical.

I went my entire freshman year in college without drinking any alcohol due to a (likely false positive) TB skin test. Spent the whole year taking INH, which would have wrecked my liver if mixed with alcohol. It was also the year in which I got the highest grades. Probably just a coincidence.

I contracted TB in 1987. I spent several weeks in quarantine away from my pregnant wife, and a year taking both INH and Rifampin.

When the CDC came out with risk factors for who should get the Covid-19 vaccine first, people with active and latent TB were mystified why TB wasn’t included as a risk factor, particularly since even asymptomatic Covid-19 can relaunch active TB.

7,174 people were diagnosed with tuberculosis in the USA in 2020. An estimated 13,000,000 people have latent tuberculosis.

Bill to increase food assistance for Nebraska drug offenders advances (Omaha World-Herald)

Nebraska law prohibits anyone convicted of a drug offence for life from receiving SNAP benefits (food stamps).

State Senator Megan Hunt’s bill LB-121 would eliminate that, provided the person convicted is complying with the terms of their release.

She has been trying to pass this bill since 2019, where it has been filibustered every year by Republicans.

Hunt argued that LB 121 was fundamental to changing the culture of the state, and would improve the quality of life for all Nebraskans by helping those in poverty. She said it makes no sense for young people who are convicted of a drug offense to not have access to food when they are older.

“I believe in second chances,” Hunt said.

Under current Nebraska law, people with three or more felony convictions for drug use or possession, or just one felony conviction for drug sale or distribution, are banned from receiving SNAP. People with one or two convictions for use or possession are eligible for SNAP only if they participate in an approved treatment program, according to the bill.

Meanwhile, other felons, including rapists, robbers and murderers, face no such bar to getting food assistance, Hunt said.

The bill has passed its first reading in the Unicameral.

Planned Parenthood North Central States, which includes Nebraska and Iowa, has received $20 million from MacKenzie Scott, part of the $275 million the philanthropist and author is giving to Planned Parenthood and its 21 affiliates.

The gift to Planned Parenthood North Central States, which also includes Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota, is the largest one-time donation in the affiliate’s history.

The donation will pay for sexual and reproductive health care, comprehensive sex education and advocacy in the five-state region.

Scott, the former wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, also announced this week that she was donating $11 million to Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. The donation is part of the $436 million that she is giving to Habitat for Humanity International and 84 of its U.S. affiliates.

If Thomas dies now, Roe v. Wade may survive in a bastardized form because Roberts seems to want to preserve it based on the bedrock constitutional principle that in his personal opinion 15 weeks is enough time for a woman to decide if she wants an abortion or not. If Thomas survives, the five judges to the right of Roberts want to reverse Roe outright.

If he’s finally parted with his delusions of grandeur, it’d be smarter for him to focus on trying to take and hold the Donetsk Basin region, and leave the rest of Ukraine alone - try to create a fait accompli in the eastern part of Ukraine and then go to the negotiating table.

But now, after almost an entire month, he might be too deep into the sunk-cost fallacy trap and thus, unwilling (or unable) to rethink his longer-term strategic goals.

If at that time Putin doesn’t have a deputy that he considers completely reliable, he won’t leave the country. And a reliable deputy would consider arresting Putin to be an act of war perpetrated by the host country, which in this case is Indonesia, which is a military customer of Russia. So no.

Of course, there were rumors about Savile’s predations as far back as the mid-1960s. Savile himself was interviewed under caution by the police in 2007 because of allegations of indecent assault and quite famously, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) alluded to suppression of what was considered to be an open secret in the BBC of Savile’s pedophilia in a 1978 interview for BBC Radio. Needless to say, Lydon’s remark was edited out of the interview.

The truth about Savile didn’t come out until about a year after his death, with ITV’s Exposure program broadcasting “The Other Side of Jimmy Savile”. The BBC itself had prepared an episode for their Newsnight show that was supposed to be broadcast in December of 2011 (only a few weeks after Savile’s death in October 2011), but it was spiked at the last minute, leading to accusations of a BBC coverup.

Going into a meeting but…what flipping gall!

Lawyers for Trump and his two eldest children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr., want the appellate division of the state’s trial court to overturn Engoron’s Feb. 17 ruling and invalidate James’ subpoenas seeking their testimony.

They detailed their arguments in a 72-page joint brief Monday, rehashing prior claims that James, a Democrat, had a political vendetta against Trump, a Republican, and that forcing the Trumps to testify would violate their constitutional rights because answers could be used against them in a parallel criminal investigation.

The Trumps’ lawyers contend that Engoron was wrong to limit the scope of a two-hour hearing prior to his ruling and that he didn’t have all of the information necessary to make a proper ruling.

Home Depot says Canadian worksheet on ‘unpacking privilege’ was unauthorized after conservatives accuse company of going ‘woke’

Home Depot addressed on Wednesday a worksheet defining privilege circulating on social media, noting that the material was an unauthorized document from the retailer’s Canadian division.

A day earlier, the “Libs of TikTok” account — an anonymous Twitter handle devoted to mocking liberals — tweeted out a picture of a Home Depot-branded worksheet about “unpacking privilege,” saying the home improvement company had “gone woke.”

And…you cannot have this! Under no circumstances.

The sniping at Home Depot earned a backlash of its own. Many commentators saw no issue with a company internally sharing guidelines around fostering tolerance and empathy in the workplace.

And…totally unsurprising to boot.

But a representative for the home improvement retailer told Insider that the printed material was not an official in-house training material. The worksheet came from the company’s Canadian division, according to the representative. They said it was never featured in any company-wide trainings, and did not receive approval from Home Depot’s department around corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion.

re: #38 Hecuba’s daughter

Based on the to-date disastrous performance of the Russian military in Ukraine, I’m rethinking my rethinking of my thinking on Romney’s 2012 characterization of Russia as being America’s “number one geopolitical foe”. He was roundly mocked: after all, Russia’s GDP was smaller than Texas. But then, during the Trump administration, where for a minor investment, Putin managed to select our President and undermine our position in the world, it seemed that Romney was amazingly prescient. Putin’s malice and goals were unlimited and it seems that despite the nation’s lack of financial resources, that he had contemporary tools that rendered our defenses obsolete. But now we observe the Russian invasion has stalled against a much smaller, less armed combatant. So maybe, in one sense, Putin is like the wizard of Oz — projecting awesome power that is all illusion. Russian is not China; it is North Korea with a nuclear arsenal and oil, but with little else of interest to the contemporary world. Its military strength is a mirage.

I am not rethinking my rethinking. I think russia has been at war with us at the very least since then. They have been using asymmetrical method$ to undermine our democracy.

Russian TV was very proud to show off the Orsk a few days ago when it arrived in Berdyansk. They said it had supplies for troops.

Ukraine say they were tracking it for days, and that it had weapons and ammunition to continue the siege of Mariupol. And they’ve blown it up.

I wonder how much of the cargo was removed in three days. Since the Orsk, a 370ft Russian Alligator-class tank carrier, is built to haul tanks I assume that unloading is pretty quick. The article doesn’t say.

Why are there never consequences?

Infowars host Alex Jones failed to show up and testify under oath at a deposition Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, leading the families’ lawyer to call for Jones’ arrest if he doesn’t appear again Thursday.

Jones, whose attorney said he missed the deposition because of an appointment for undisclosed medical conditions, was scheduled to testify Wednesday and Thursday in Austin, Texas, where Infowars is based, in connection with the relatives’ defamation lawsuit against him for saying the 2012 school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, was a hoax.

She denied a request by the families’ lawyer, Christopher Mattei, to issue an arrest order to have Jones brought to the proceeding if he fails to attend again, but said Mattei could seek to subpoena Jones and request sanctions against him.

Mattei said he would seek a subpoena in Texas if the judge didn’t approve his request for an arrest order.

Jones’ lawyer, Norman Pattis, filed new court documents late Wednesday afternoon that included letters from two doctors who said they advised Jones not to attend the deposition because of his medical conditions. Pattis also asked Bellis to postpone the deposition, but she denied the request.

In the court filing, Pattis wrote Jones’ doctor was “so alarmed” by his observations of Jones on Monday that he advised him to go to an emergency room or call 911. Jones refused and his doctor advised him to stay home, Pattis said.

On Tuesday, however, Jones broadcasted his daily website show at the Infowars studio in Austin, his lawyers said. He did not appear in person on the show Wednesday, but he provided commentary by phone including pre-recorded segments for portions of the program. He did not discuss the deposition or his medical conditions at the beginning of the show.

To sick to show up for court but not do his show - no matter where he did it from.

Some things I didn’t get from Twit about the Manafort Dubai thing:

Federal authorities blocked former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort from boarding a flight to Dubai from Miami over the weekend because he was trying to travel on a passport that was revoked after his 2017 arrest.

Manafort’s passport was revoked in October 2017 after his arrest. But it was physically returned to him by the FBI after Trump pardoned him.

Manafort is not legally prevented from leaving the country or from applying for a new passport to replace his old one. It was not clear why he had tried to travel on an invalid passport.

Dubai’s airport offers connections to multiple airports in Russia.

My dad is one of the smartest people I know, and he didn’t finish high school. But my dad would never try to think he’s capable of going up against a recent college physics graduate on the subject of quantum mechanics just because he knows how to fix a car.

I was a professional software developer while I was getting my degree in computer science. And there were a number of people with degrees who didn’t know as much as I did. But I also worked with people, and the books I read were by people, who I couldn’t come close to until I had put in the hard work of getting my bachelor’s and master’s (? apostrophes).

So yes, when certain people, like Congresspeople, decided to throw their intellectual prowess around, their education level is fair game. Because if it isn’t, there’s no reason to favor a climate scientist over Ted Cruz.

I’m reading through the document linked in Mike Dunford’s tweet above concerning Alex Jones excusing himself from his deposition with a doctor’s note. The judge is very clearly unhappy with Jones and with his attorneys, who have zero good answers for the judge’s questions. Apparently, this doctor wrote a note that effectively says, “No, Alex Jones can’t show up to depositions this week, he should stay home.” As in, literally, a note excusing him from legal obligations and nothing else. The judge even notes that Jones went live at his studio the day before. His attorneys have no way to verify the note; they have the name of the doctor, but no information regarding the patient/physician relationship, whether the doctor is licensed to practice medicine at all, the states he may be licensed to practice in, nothing. They have testimony from an attorney who was unable to attend the hearing in person, who purportedly spoke to the doctor in question. It’s looking very sanctionable from this armchair not-a-lawyer’s perspective.

On the issue of education (no reason favouring a climate scientist over Ted Cruz) there is a difference.

No politician at any level of governance can possibly know everything about every subject, no matter how much education they have amassed. Thus a politician should rely on experts in their fields to help guide political policy.

During my time on my village board, there were debates about taxes (I am not an economist), restoring buildings (I am not an architect), restoring our streets (I am not a civil engineer), refurbishing our city park (back to architect and civil engineer again), bringing the library into full compliance with the ADA (I am not a lawyer nor a library scientist, though I did have my wife to lean on over that).

A hack gets elected to ignore experts (unless the experts agree with them).

I read through the end of the transcript of the Jones hearing. The judge denied the motion for a protective order, which apparently was the emergency motion filed to postpone or cancel the deposition. Further, the judge ordered the attorney to show cause why the letter he filed wasn’t filed with intent to mislead the court as to Jones’s whereabouts, as the plaintiffs’ attorneys demonstrated adequately to the court that Jones was broadcasting from his studio, a location that is not his home, as the alleged doctor’s letter stated he was supposed to stay at home. Jones’s attorney was advised that the deposition was proceeding - and that his physician could attend with him, if they felt it was medically necessary - and that’s the end of it.

So, in summary: The judge did not buy any of the shenanigans. Jones and his attorneys are basically under advisement that they had better show up this morning, or they’re facing contempt of court. The court is basically giving him enough rope to hang himself, which is the way of courts; they try to assume good faith as much as possible, in the interests of avoiding appeals, but even the court’s patience has limits, and he is now officially at their end.

SUPERIOR COURT
JUDICIAL DISTRICT OF WATERBURY
3/23/2022

ORDER
ORDER REGARDING:
03/23/2022 744.00 MOTION FOR PROTECTIVE ORDER

The foregoing, having been considered by the Court, is hereby:
ORDER: DENIED

Mr. Jones has by all accounts broadcast live from his studio on Monday and Tuesday, in disregard of Dr. Marble’s purported instructions to stay home and rest. Additionally, plaintiffs’ counsel alleges that even today, Mr. Jones called into his show, speaking on the war in Ukraine, although the court has no evidence to confirm that. While the court has no details regarding Dr. Offutt’s background or
qualifications, it appears both from Dr. Marble’s letter that the court reviewed yesterday in camera, and from Dr. Offutt’s letter today, that the medical issues, while potentially serious, are not currently serious enough to either require his hospitalization, or convince him to stop engaging in his broadcasts. Mr. Jones cannot unilaterally decide to continue to engage in his broadcasts, but refuse to participate in a deposition. The motion is denied. Of course, if, as Dr. Offutt indicates, he develops escalating symptoms such that he is hospitalized, that change in circumstance would excuse his attendance at the court ordered deposition. The court expects that the deposition, which will be videotaped, will proceed in a calm, orderly, and professional manner, as all depositions should proceed. The court will be available during the deposition should any issues arise related to this order.
Judicial Notice (JDNO) was sent regarding this order.

Russia has thousands of tanks of varying quality and quantity. They have a few hundred Armata tanks (their top of the line), and around 1000 T-90s.

It’s one thing to have all those tanks. It’s quite another to be able to deliver them to the front where they can be used. The Russian supply lines are all fucked up inside Ukraine, and it’s not any better once you reach back into Russia. And it’s clear that Russia can’t keep the gear they do have in working condition anywhere - in the combat areas or outside. That’s going to slow resupply significantly too.

Because if it isn’t, there’s no reason to favor a climate scientist over Ted Cruz.

many successful, high powered people - doctors, lawyers, and other technical folks, think like that. it’s part ego and part understandable. but just cause you’re a great surgeon doesnt make you a great golfer, or chef. it just means you have drive and determination and maybe can master other stuff if you put in the time and effort.

Always be willing to learn, and admit you were wrong. Even if you are an expert in your field, it’s always possible for someone to come along who knows more than you in a specific area. My son and I were talking about this in games yesterday. I’m a good gamer. I have not played much of this specific game we’ve been playing lately. Therefore, I could stand to learn even from my almost-eleven-year-old boy, even as I have much to teach him about how to work in a team environment and how to play against high-difficulty enemies that he has little experience with playing alone.

One wonders if there was collateral damage from the LST that was basically destroyed, depending on how close they were sailing.

When I used to play the game Battleship, I would group my ships in a tight, square formation (except for the little two peg ship that was floating off in the far distance). People rarely thought that ships would be grouped that way and I often won.

Ships being close together in a game: good.

Ships being close together in war: not good.

It’s controversial to Republicans because they don’t want to admit they are racist. Well, and let’s be clear: Russia is good at offensive cyber warfare. Defending against cyber attack is a whole ‘nother kettle of fish. It requires a completely different skill set, with some overlap as far as being able to know and predict the vectors a cyber attacker will use to come at you. Anonymous is one of the oldest black hat organizations in the game, with some of the Internet’s best cyber warfare agents from the early days of the Internet.

“Should he invade, it will be a historic error,” Albright, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state, warned in her final column for The New York Times published on Feb. 23.

Losing this is going to sting. Was it worth his war crimes in Ukraine?

In the legend of Tales From the Thousand and One Nights, Scheherazade is a beautiful virgin who escapes being murdered by the king by telling him stories at night.

Scheherazade is also President Vladimir Putin’s $700 million superyacht, according to Russian investigative journalists—and its ability to survive being seized by Western governments will require far more cunning than storytelling.

The yacht, currently moored in the Marina di Carrara on Italy’s Tuscany coast, is gargantuan, even by the outsize dimensions of Russian oligarchs’ superyachts. At about 459 feet long, it has six levels of decks, two helipads with a hidden helicopter hangar, a spa, huge living room and dining room, a swimming pool and three saunas, as well as an upper-level “owner’s area” that includes its own private spa.

How can a $700 million superyacht sitting in an Italian port ‘belong to no one’? Russian sleuths say it’s Putin’s (Fortune)

Breaks my heart.

A Russian soldier drove over his colonel with a tank — while two other service members were caught venting about strongman Vladimir Putin’s “bulls—” invasion of Ukraine amid reports of heavy losses.

The Russian soldier who was behind the wheel of the tank “blamed the commander of the group, Col. Yury Medvedev, for the deaths of his friends,” Ukrainian journalist Roman Tsimbalyuk said on Facebook.

“Having waited for the right moment, during battle, he ran over the commander with a tank as he stood next to him, injuring both his legs,” he wrote, the Daily Beast reported.

“Now Col. Medvedev is in a hospital in Belarus, waiting for monetary compensation for combat wounds received during the ‘special military operation to protect the Donbass.’ Colonel Medvedev was awarded the Order of Courage,” he wrote.

Small soap-box: So the NWS updated their web page for real time data from any given reporting station (both NWS and other sources.)

Used to have a column for air pressure in millibars.

In the new webpage arrangement one can choose how the page describes values - either in metric (usually SI) or in “standard” (which means American version of English units.)

Even in the old webpage, when one selected standard units the air pressure was given in three columns, one of which was in millibars.

Now the new page only gives inches of mercury (Hg.)

I have to switch the page to metric to get millibars, but then the temp is in C and I want F.

Sure, the new arrangement is more consistent, but not as useful to me.

Oh, and it’s not really consistent, because even in “standard” mode the solar radiance is given in Watts per square meters.

If one is going to use “standard” American values then the solar radiance should be in horsepower per square yards.

Maybe even the NWS boffins thought that might be going a bit too far in being “standard”??

While the horrific death rate amongst conservatives probably won’t have much effect in locked-in red states, in state, county, or local elections a few votes can swing an election.

Aside from getting out to vote in the midterms for representatives and senators, this might also affect those local elections as well, where Democrats have lagged for some time. (I’m not angry at losing my last election by three votes, but it does show how close elections can be flipped.)

I used to only use NWS for the radar. With every update it got less user friendly for me and I no longer use it. I just assumed it was my lack of knowledge though.

I think they’re okay with being racists though. And they’re perfectly fine with their racist supporters.

“The Death of a Euphemism” video at YouTube applies to what’s been going on since Trump came down his escalator.

You can only use euphemisms for so long until the racists demand more. Then the so-called moderates after the euphemisms are dropped are in the position of “who the hell else am I going to vote for” (because a Democrat is right out).

Hence Bill Barr claiming Trump was unsuited for the job, but he’ll vote for him again if he runs. He cannot conceive of voting for a Democrat and would rather have an incompetent Republican.

Estonia is calling for Nato to abandon its “tripwire” posture in eastern Europe and build up a permanent force in the region capable of stopping a Russian offensive.

Ahead of Thursday’s Nato summit, Jonatan Vseviov, the permanent secretary of the Estonian foreign ministry, said that Europe and the North Atlantic alliance could never return to the world it knew before the 24 February Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“We will be in a totally new security environment. There will be a new Ukraine. There will be a new Russia. There will be a new Europe. There is no going back to February 23,” Vseviov told the Guardian in an interview in Washington.

Either you’re looking at a different NWS Website than I am, or NWS Cheyenne hasn’t adopted this.

Air pressure on the local page is given in both in/Hg and mBars.
Temperatures are given in both Fahrenheit and Commie.

The Senate is a unique form of gerrymandering in which rural, less populated states are proportionally over-represented.

There was a time when “rural state” did not necessarily mean “red state”, but with only a few exceptions, that is the case now, and this skewers both the Senate and the Electoral College and makes them less representative of the will of the voters.

I contracted TB in 1987. I spent several weeks in quarantine away from my pregnant wife, and a year taking both INH and Rifampin.

When the CDC came out with risk factors for who should get the Covid-19 vaccine first, people with active and latent TB were mystified why TB wasn’t included as a risk factor, particularly since even asymptomatic Covid-19 can relaunch active TB.

cdc.gov

7,174 people were diagnosed with tuberculosis in the USA in 2020. An estimated 13,000,000 people have latent tuberculosis.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old (late 1960s), I wasn’t feeling well. I remember just lying around on a chaise longue in the back yard, soaking up the sun because I felt cold. My mother was alarmed by my actions and took me to the doctor, who sent me for a TB tine test. Which I tested positive for. The next step was a chest X-ray which showed…nothing. (I still remember the shirt I wore that day, it had a screenprint of a couple of deer with fantastical horns on them.) As far as the doctors were concerned, I didn’t have TB, thus didn’t need additional treatment. Over 50 years later, still wondering about that. Maybe the TB test was a false positive. I’ll never know.

the senate became this way more or less naturally or organically. people moved and or their political positions solidified. no state boundaries were changed or any rules manipulated or taken advantage of. though one could make arguments about how and when states were admitted so some sort of ‘balance’ was superficially maintained

congressional borders are redrawn not to fairly represent the census and changing polity, but are deliberately twisted into knots for political advantage only.

There is a sense in which that is accurate though. A large proportion of the talent pool for the Senate is Representatives from gerrymandered districts, so when the people running for US Senate are a bunch of candidates who ran for Congress or the state legislature in blood red districts in which their only concern was to not let a primary challenger get to the right of them, it kind of is like the product of inbreeding.

To some extent, I’m OK with the Senate being a vestigial body representing the land, as long as it no longer serves as an absolute check on the power of the majority to do anything. That’s my biggest problem with the way the Senate is today. Senate reform should take one of two forms:

1) Make it so that it is more representative of the people, rather than the land they live on; OR
2) Make it so that the majority of the people cannot be completely denied by the workings of the Senate.

I am perfectly okay with the minority having some power in this country. There will always be a time where the minority faction’s rights should be respected and defended by the government. What I am absolutely against is this complete obstructionism that the unspoken filibuster and other modern Senatorial inventions have brought about.

And yes, I am OK with this even if the GOP takes power in the Senate. I know that’s the immediate risk that everyone talks about, but if, by some abhorrent nightmare, the GOP wins control of both houses of Congress, yes, they probably cheated, but they also have the right to enact their agenda, as abhorrent as it may be. It is incumbent upon us to prevent that from happening.

Back to gerrymandering of congressional districts: Ohio is my favorite example.

Last election, the GOP got around 55% of the vote, the Dems 45%.

One would think that of the 16 congressional districts, the GOP would wind up in control of nine or ten.

But thanks to gerrymandering, the Republican control 12 seats. The Dems get 4 seats with 70-80% margins while the GOP get the rest with a lead of just a few points.

Germany, with a population of less than one-third of America, has a 600-seat Parliament. Half of the ministers are elected directly, the rest proportionally based on the share of the vote that their party receives.

Elections should have consequences. When voting means nothing because the Senate exists solely to prevent legislation from being enacted, it breeds apathy and erodes faith in government. Why bother to vote if nothing is going to change anyway? That way leads to minority rule and authoritarianism.

And potentially, the 41% could represent just 11% of the population. Of course, there are large states (TX, FL) who are GOP, but technically they could represent only 11%. And if we reverted to the old rules where only 51 votes were needed, those 51 could be from states representing less than 20% of the population. Our Constitution has been broken since its inception.

I watched the first part of Akira and fell asleep. It’s groundbreaking and all that but it’s also incoherent story-wise. The Fatal Eight Words eventuated — “I don’t care what happens to these people” — and I stopped watching. Even trying to read the manga which the movie excerpted caused me to stop caring and I abandoned the effort. Same with Neon Genesis Evangelion but I have a hate on for doormat characters in anime and manga and no great love for giant mecha storylines, having been in the robotics biz for a time a while back.

Good news though for manga fans — Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is finally (FINALLY!) getting a legal English-language release from Seven Seas, in five large-format tankos. Quite a few manga fans think it the best manga ever, myself included.

3. Go fuck yourself, Lindsey.

I’m old fashioned enough to need to build the argument on why one must fuck themselves first, I suppose, but hard to argue getting to the point either.

Oh, and also, Go fuck yourself, Lindsay.

It was designed to protect the slaveowners, so from their pov, it wasn’t broken.

LOL - looks like Russia’s demand to only be paid for oil and gas in rubles didn’t last very long:

They realized virtually no one wants to trade in their dying currency no matter what the commodity in question is, so now they reckon they have to switch to decentralized currency to get fucking anybody to buy the only thing they have that can remotely prop up their over-inflated economy.

Personally, if they actually start doing that I’d be sweating if I had any Bitcoin. There would almost certainly be a cryptocurrency crackdown to stop them from circumventing sanctions.

Below is a translation of a youtube video made by a Chinese computer programmer living in Odessa. He started posting about the war, but since his experiences contradict what the government is telling the people about Russia in Ukraine, his accounts were all deleted. He relied on social media as a way to communicate with his parents. I hate what will happen to him if he returns to China.

chinafile.com

‘March 17: I’m still alive! Sorry, I’m used to standing upright and have forgotten how to kneel in front of you! And, on to the day when this war is won,’ a Video by Wang Jixian

March 17, 10:30 at night. This is Jixian. I’m in Odessa and I’m still alive. News about the war: The Defensive Forces are recovering lost territory, bit by bit. It feels as though we can make out the dawning light of victory.

Honestly, I really don’t know what you are so afraid of. Is my voice really that threatening to you?
Today, I went to buy some beef and pick up the AirPods that I’d sent to Kyiv to be repaired. If nothing else, it proved to me that despite the recent bombardment of Kyiv the fellow there was still at work and deliveries between Odessa and Kyiv were still being made. Of course, Odessa is also still a functioning city. I should add that they’re Apple AirPods, so I wasn’t charged, although it did take two weeks to get them back. Doesn’t that news unsettle you, as well?

Then, around 3:45 p.m. my time [9:45 p.m. Beijing time], I learned that my Chinese social media accounts had been cancelled in a single coordinated action; they weren’t “blocked,” they were “cancelled.” Everything is gone, including the means I have to let my family know that I’m safe. It’s also the only way my parents can contact me.

You’ve deleted all of it.

Here we can accept scenes of Russian soldiers laying down their butcher’s knives; why are you incapable of tolerating one of your own citizens, a lowly computer programmer? I’m not involved in the war, nor am I spy. I have no party affiliation either.

I don’t blame the underling who deleted my accounts, because I’d like to believe that the only reason they pressed the delete key was because their superiors ordered it. But right now, I want to know who gave that order. Who’s the person responsible for this? Don’t you have parents of your own? Children even? Would you have pressed “delete” if it were your child who was in a war zone? Would you have cut off the only way they had to stay in touch with you?

Now I have to rely on other people to pass on a message to my parents. That’s right, TO PASS ON—because I can no longer contact them directly. It’s the only way I can let them know that I’m still alive; that I’m determined to see this war won, a day that I believe will not be too far off.

You cowards. Who should be the true masters of the land on which you tread? The people, or you, who lord over it and exploit the people?

I’m Chinese, the citizen of a country with a constitution and the rule of law. Its ruling party also has a constitution of its own. If you think my actions are in breach of the law, then why haven’t I been tried? If you don’t want to deal with me legally, if you want to treat me as an enemy, well, isn’t this the kind of battle ground you’d prefer? Then why don’t you come here yourself? Why are you pressuring my parents instead?

The power that you have is the power vested in you by the people. What are your cannons and weapons for? To attack your own people? If you like repressing people so much, then come here and shoot at me yourselves! But you hesitate, you prefer to support the Russians who are murdering Ukrainians. In a previous video, I told you that if this were the Second World War and the invaders were Germans, I’d volunteer to be Jewish. Now, let me tell you: I volunteer to become a Ukrainian. Don’t you enjoy seeing Ukrainians being murdered?

You cowards!

Don’t think I don’t know what is going to happen to me now. It is, after all, what you people do. You excel at concocting lies, it’s the only real talent you have; and lies are the only kind of language you really know how to speak. So, from here on in, I know I’ll be the subject of even more outrageous rumors. Do you think I really care? Every day here I’m embroiled with Big Boss Putin and his nuclear threats. A few days ago, when they used a vacuum bomb, was that you? Why are you so scared of people knowing? The whole world knows what’s going on here; the whole world except for the people of two countries [Russia and China]. Why have you been so willing to get involved in Russia’s war on Ukraine? It’s not your fight. I’m a resident here; do you think I’m scared of your pressure? Do you honestly think that the way you treat me is more frightening than the missiles or the threat of nuclear weapons? Who should really be afraid? Just think about it.

Are you like Putin? Are you also afraid that if people know too much they’ll wake up to what’s going on and start thinking for themselves, that they’ll chose to ignore all of your lies?

Let me remind you, people nurtured by Chinese civilization know that the darkness will not always conquer the light. See what history tells us—through the ages, how did all the political forces and dynasties that tried to control people’s minds end up? You should know the answer better than anyone.

Normal everyday people just want to get on with their lives. Why do you try and force them? No matter who turns up, people will still have to pay their taxes and get on with their lives. So let me make a suggestion: give everyone a break; no one wants to force you.

Friends, when you can get in touch with my parents, my family, and my old friends on my behalf, I hope you’ll tell them that I’m here and that I’m still alive. Please, let them know what’s been going on. I only hope that, regardless of what happens to me, every time they mention my name in the future they’ll do so with a sense of pride, that they’ll know I did not bring shame on them.

If my motherland makes me choose between living on my knees or dying while standing upright, I hope you know what I’ll do. Sorry, I’m used to standing upright and I’ve forgotten how to kneel in front of you!

You can sue me, take me to court. You can formally declare that I am your enemy, but just remember one thing: I’ll never kneel before you, I’ll never bend. The only way you can convince me of anything is if you do it with reason; I will never submit to your violent ways.

Today my heart is heavy. This is Jixian. Goodnight.

re: #278 Nojay UK

I’ve never watched Akira. I’ve watched all of NGE, End of Evangelion and the Rebuilds. I found the further you get in NGE and especially EoE, it’s a seriously rough go psychologically. I think the Rebuilds are for the most part very good and 3.0 + 1.0 went in directions I hardly anticipated. I thought the ending was pretty much “best of all possible worlds” and shows that Anno Hideaki has grown up. That said, my only real gripe was the amount of fanservice, but that’s always been a thing with the NGE franchise.

I was actually kind of stunned to see that Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (YKK/Yokohama Shopping Trip) is coming out in English. It’s not like a typical manga, with lots of action—in fact, quite the opposite. I had been kicking around buying it in Japanese and struggling my way through it. Now I don’t have to. There are two OVA which you can find on YouTube with English subtitles. The first OVA is simply gorgeous. The second is OK, but not as much care was taken with it.

Almost 20 years ago, a film was released that, while highly praised by critics, wasn’t really appreciated by audiences. It should have had a least one sequel, with the same stars, director, screenwriter and cinematographer.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is, IMHO, an absolute masterpiece of cinema from Peter Weir that never really seized the popular imagination like the Lord of the Rings films. We got lots of Pirates of the Caribbean sequels…but nothing for this (though I understand a prequel may be in development).

The modern GOP message is that we make up and determine our own reality and then use law and other governmental instruments to impose that reality on others who reality varies.

Tenets of GOP reality:

America is a Christian Nation and as such, Christianity deserves a special status as a religion.
There is no systematic racism in America: CRT is a leftist plot to sow dissent.
Abolishing government regulations and lowering taxes will generate new job
Unborn life has precedent over the rights and even the lives of the mothers (or rather “carriers”)
Homosexuality, transsexuality, pre- or extramarital sex are all sinful and cannot be tolerated.
Education should be privatized to the greatest possible extent.
Health Care should be privatized to the greatest possible extent
There should be no limits or restriction on citizens’ rights to arm themselves with as much ordinance as they can get their hands on.
America does not recognize any international rights, norms or jurisdiction.

That’s from a 2018 ruling. That court found that the corrections officer’s employer was not liable for the judgment ($6.7 million). They considered the rape outside the scope of employment by the county.

In other words, the court found that the deep pockets were not available to compensate the victim of a heinous rape.

The problem is that the entire reason that the officer was in the position to carry out the rape was because he was employed as a corrections officer, and he still engaged in abusive conduct despite training to the contrary. But for his employment, he would not have raped this woman.

The reasoning was designed to insulate the county from consequences of the crimes by its employees.

A manga that’s a fine palate-cleansing antidote to Harry Potter is Mahoutsukai no Yome by Yamazaki Kore. It’s published in English by Seven Seas as The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Totally excellent story with delicious artwork set (mostly) in England among the legends and magical creatures that live in the spaces between Reality with a very solid basis of magic and the price its users pay. The story has been in a Magical College arc for a while now.

There’s been an anime series which ended just before the Magical College arc started, with a couple of prequel and sidestory OVAs as extras.

Moreover:

Prosecutors in the 1/6 cases have been issuing unduly light sentencing recommendations to the point that the judges have been questioning the sentencing, and imposing more harsh sentences (which are still unbelievably light considering the seditious conduct of those involved).

Prosecutors have been light on charging for the most part as well. That is the first in a series of decisions prosecutors have made in these cases that have resulted in slaps on the wrist for trying to overthrow the government, destruction of federal property, trespass in restricted areas, attempted kidnapping, and other charges that were not considered in every single case.

There’s a whole lot of white privilege floating around the charges in these cases, despite caterwauling from 1/6 insurrectionist enablers in Congress complaining about the conditions where those defendants are being held.

The average American would have been arrested by now for defying one court order, let alone two. Jones should have been dragged kicking and screaming to a jail cell by now.

Harkens back to the bad old Russia/Soviet Union days where political officers would kill conscripts or regular army officers/soldiers who didn’t follow orders to march on to certain death. Putin’s trying to keep even his army in line with death squads to terrorize his own troops into committing atrocities.

I find this tweet interesting because it attempts to identify the size of the Russian invasion force and relate the reported damage to that. Obviously we do not have verified figures on either total force or the actual casualties. But it seems to me a good faith first attempt.

I seem to recall that there was a purported intercepted conversation between two Russian soldiers released by Ukraine yesterday. In it one Russian soldier said to the other that his commander had shot soldiers who refused orders and then put the deaths down as battlefield casualties.

Alina Habba’s one of the lawyers on this?

The one Trump picked because she’s got a particular look (not necessarily set of skills, because she has no relevant experience around commercial real estate).

I wished that they had been able to fit in the first meeting of the main characters as it was written by Patrick O’Brian. That was a great scene.

my favorite scene from the books is when aubrey walks in on maturin dissecting one of the french spies that the two have been in conflict with since their encounter in America. as i recall, the fellow had died of natural causes, but stephen had that insatiable curiosity about the natural world.

re: #213 Punish Domestic Terrorists

I looks like they’re locked in, because telling the yahoos to vaccinate just makes them mad, so that subculture will be sicker than the mainstream, and die younger than mainstream Americans. Unfortunately, they’ll probably offset it by having large families like the pre-vaccine days.
