XKCD: Could You Make an Umbrella Out of Lasers?

Science • Views: 14,159

I don’t think I’d call the xkcd videos wild or hilarious, but they’re certainly amusing and sometimes that’s more than enough. And they’re short. Don’t forget short.

Stopping rain from falling on something with an umbrella is boring. What if you tried to stop rain with a laser that targeted and vaporized each incoming droplet before it could come within ten feet of the ground?

Basically, if you could make a device that does this, you’d be walking around in a fog of superheated steam.

I feel like that most of the time anyway.

For similar reasons, using lasers or a flamethrower to clear your driveway (or the road in front of you) is a Bad Idea (tm), in addition to being so inefficient as to be impractical.

Hunter Biden’s Lawyers Say Feds Mistook ‘Lines of Sawdust’ for Cocaine

While digging through his electronics, investigators executing a search warrant found photos and videos that Biden had taken of “apparent cocaine, crack cocaine, and drug paraphernalia,” as they described it in an exhibit filed last week as evidence that he had been lying about his drug usage when he bought a gun in Delaware in 2018.

One of the images included in the filing showed three lines of a yellow-tinged, powdery substance on a plank.

“The prosecution is flat out wrong—both that Mr. Biden ‘took’ this photograph and in claiming that it depicts ‘cocaine.’” Biden’s attorneys wrote on Tuesday. “Multiple sources have pointed out, and a review of discovery confirms, this is actually a photo of sawdust from an expert carpenter and it was sent to Mr. Biden, not vice versa.”

The filing goes on to explain that the carpenter—in recovery from cocaine addiction himself—set up the gag shot and sent it to Biden’s then-psychiatrist, Dr. Keith Ablow. The doctor sent it on to Biden, telling him he’d told the carpenter he’d have to choose between his art and his drug.

Anne has cut large interesting chunks out of it at balloon-juice.com, including this insight:

The students’ demographics were as revealing as their chosen majors. Roughly 80% were white. Over 70% were men. There was not a black man in the room. The way these percentages diverge from national higher education averages should tell you something about what kind of intellectual community UATX is building. In practice, UATX is recruiting a student body whose racial and gender makeup resembles a pre-civil rights university.

The subtext of these remarks was simple. The social capital, political influence, and access to wealth that was formerly the uncontested and exclusive prerogative of straight white men was now under question. They felt it at school. They saw it in the media. They were here, at UATX, to live out a dying dream, to vent their frustration at its loss, and to help one another cling to it as long as possible.

Georgia Gov. Kemp reveals he was interviewed by special counsel in 2020 election interference case

Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who resisted intense pressure from former President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 election results in his state, revealed Tuesday that he has been interviewed by special counsel Jack Smith’s office.

“I basically told them the same thing I told the special grand juries: that I follow the law and the Constitution and answered all their questions truthfully,” Kemp told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source,” noting that the conversation took place “months ago” and “really didn’t last that long.”

I actually don’t buy that. It wasn’t even a generation before white Republicans decided that they were more interested in the industrial revolution than the welfare of blacks. After 40 years, there were plenty of adults who had no clue what the reasons for the Civil War were.

I offer as evidence the current Republican party, which has gone full totalitarian, supporting Putin, after most of the Cold War leadership has died.

re: #47 teleskiguy

I think the Nuremberg Trials and subsequent executions and making the Nazi political party completely illegal has worked for Germany for many generations, way more than 40 years.

And the fact that they have had a foreign military force in their country most of the time, and the country was split in two, with a threatening army pointing at them for most of that time. And it hasn’t been that long since they became a single country.

But it wasn’t just the trials, as you said, they made Nazis illegal. We didn’t do that to Democrats. They’re also forced by their laws to remember what they did. We don’t have that.

It’s not the hangings that have had the big effect. It’s the forced repudiation that is the effective part, and Republicans ended that in the South in the late 1800s.

A Michigan man was charged Tuesday under the state’s new law requiring safe storage of guns after his 2-year-old daughter shot herself in the head with his revolver the day after the law took effect.

The 44-year-old Flint man became the first person to be charged with violating the law that took effect on Feb. 13, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said. The girl is hospitalized in critical condition.

This law “went into effect one week ago today,” Leyton said at a news conference announcing charges against the man. “This incident occurred the very next day.”

thedailybeast.com

Another thing the prosecutors discuss is that there is a brown pouch that they say was fom Biden and contained cocaine residue. But, as they now state, the package was given to them by a garbage diver who went into the garbage cans and that they did not test for cocaine reside for 5 years and never tested for fingerprints!!

So no real provenance and nothinbg to tie it directly to Biden. Just like the laptop.

One final thing - Biden’s lawyers mention that the IRS agent who illegally released Trump’s tax return was just sent to prison. But the 2 IRS agents who did the same illegal release of Hunter’s tax returns are still working for the prosecutor. Working for the prosecutor!!

If this case ever gets to a trial, how in the world are they ever going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt?

re: #56 Belafon

Maybe but I believe the prosecutor purposefully brought the charges in California, a hotbed of liberals even if white men because he wants to lose the trial. He knew the case was a bust long ago, for these reasons. He hoped he could cover his butt with a deal (which was overseen by a judge in Delaware!) but that was tossed because of political pressure. So he went to CA to start the trial knowing that its weakness would result in not guuilty. Then he could say he tried.

But I expect his reputation is gone.

Trump’s re-election campaign spent more money than it raised in January

Trump raised $8.8 million. His largest super PAC raised $7 million but sent $5 million to his other PAC which is paying his legal bills.

Haley raised $12 million. Biden took in $42 million!!!

Biden is a fundraising machine. He has now over $130 million on hand to spend. Trump had $30 million, $3 million less than the month before.

So Biden is getting huge amounts of money from small donors yet the MSM decides this is a problem for Biden. The CBS article spends half its paragraphs discussing how independents and Democrats do not want Biden.

So why are they sending him so much money? Really hate the MSM. Not even internally consistent.

A littl ebreak from Taylor-mania. Pink’s tour last year was the 7th highest grossing concert tour ever by a woman (she already has the #4 from 2018. She is right there with Swift, Beyonce and Madonna for tour revenue by women.)

And I like her songs ;-) So What? is not only a fun breakup song, but she included the guy she broke up with in the video (they had reconciled by then and are still married)

Haven’t seen any DK coverage on this Feb 1st Daily Beast story by Sam Brodey and Roger Sollenberger, and wanted to make sure to call attention to it. Well worth clicking on the link and reading in its entirety. Sinema’s spending patterns lately have been decidedly odd for someone who plans to run for reelection. LOTS of luxury travel, which she publicly deplored when running for office in 2018. “Mind-boggling” spending by both herself and her Getting Stuff Done leadership PAC on security, adding up to $105K/month, most of it on buddy Vrindivan Bellord, the sister of her former colleague Tulsi Gabbard.

She has spent very little on advertising, and took in less money in the fourth quarter of 2023 than her fellow Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, who is not running again till 2028. “Leadership PACs are generally for spreading cash around to allied politicians, party organizations, or other political causes”, says the article, but her PAC is running badly in the red and has spent only $25K or about 2.25% of last year’s revenues on other candidates. She still hasn’t officially declared and only has till April 8th to file. Maybe this means we’ll get lucky and it will be a two-way race between Ruben Gallego and notorious 2020/2022 election denier Kari Lake. If so, I’d give Gallego good odds.

Alabama Declares Frozen Embryos Are Children, Creating Nightmare Rule Against Perpetuities Hypo

Wow, I had not thought about the Rule agaist Perpetuities essentially, this prohibits the control of property long after the death of those originally involved in it. Most times the interest has to end within 21 years of anyone who was alive at the time it was created. In Alabama it is:

(a) A nonvested property interest is invalid unless:
(1) when the interest is created, it is certain to vest or terminate no later than 21 years after the death of an individual then alive; or
(2) the interest either vests or terminates within 100 years after its creation.

Keep the freezers going and (1) never holds. The individual will never die. And then they can cover (2) by using a rolling set of interests that say vest then revest again.

I bet there are going to be some great attempts to abuse this.

Of course there is another huge problem. The embryo is both alive and dead because the only way to prove it is alive is to put it into a womb, at which point it may not survive, thus killing it. Gonna be great lawsuits.

re: #29 Belafon

The funny thing about UATX is it’s trying to be the UT Austin of 40+ years ago, the UT Austin I graduated from 40 years ago and to some extent still is today. I looked up UT Austin’s current student stats:

Gender
Women: 56.3%
Men: 43.6%
Ethnicity/Race
American Indian or Alaskan Native: 0.1%
Asian: 22.0%
Black: 4.5%
Hispanic: 25.2%
International: 9.6%
Multiracial (excl. Black or Hispanic): 2.8%
Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander: 0.1%
White: 33.0%
Unknown or Blank: 1.8%

utexas.edu

When I went to UT Austin, the gender ratio probably skewed to more men than women and definitely far more white than minority. (And back then, there was no breakout into Hispanic.) It’s still depressing to see that even though the state population is 14% Black, that UT Austin is still a long fucking ways away from representing the state’s population.

But there’s a whole attitude that Bari Weiss and her friends are reaching for, an attitude that was being recognized for what it was even in the 1980s. Yeah, let’s call it white racism, let’s call it white elitism. And yeah, it was there in the 1980s. I’m still depressed that I walked past the Robert E. Lee and Jeff Davis and Woodrow Wilson* statues for YEARS and didn’t even think they shouldn’t be there, much less gotten a rope and tried to pull them down. This racist, elitist attitude is still there, I’m sure, just covered up. Bari and friends want to bring that back to the forefront and as a grad of UT Austin (class of 1984) all I can say is *blergh*.

* Wilson segregated the Federal civil service. It was decades later when I learned this, and that’s why he got a statue on the UT Austin campus, not because he founded the League of Nations.

What if we’re all descended from these:

The red-lipped batfish or Galápagos batfish (Ogcocephalus darwini) is a fish of unusual morphology found around the Galápagos Islands and off Peru at depths of 3 to 76 m (10 to 249 ft).[2] Red-lipped batfish are closely related to rosy-lipped batfish (Ogcocephalus porrectus), which are found near Cocos Island off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This fish is mainly known for its bright red lips. Batfish are not good swimmers; they use their highly adapted pectoral, pelvic and anal fins to “walk” on the ocean floor. When the batfish reaches maturity, its dorsal fin becomes a single spine-like projection (thought to function primarily as a lure for prey).

Grandma Bacon worked as a clerk in the Navy Department when Wilson was President and she remembered the day Wilson purged a lot of career people out of the department because they just happened to be 1) black and 2) Republican. Of course he claimed that he was removing the Republican “partisan influence” in the department.

Sadly Grandma’s boss executed those purges—one Franklin Delano Roosevelt who was the Assistant Secretary Of The Navy…

If I were an Alabama fertility clinic holding a bunch of frozen embryos, facing possible homicide charges if a blackout occurs, I would notify all the parents of frozen embryos that they have thirty days to pick up their children. After the deadline passed, for all of the frozen eggs still in my possession, I would notify child protective services that they had been abandoned by their parents, and they need to take custody of them to farm out to foster homes.

So this is what happens when we as a nation cannot agree on a common set of basic values to teach to our children: we have parents who seek to “protect” their children from Evil (we just had the story about the couple who sought the Moral Purity of a theocratic Russia) and now we have these Mormon Mom batshit cray-zees.

I am sure this is just the tip of the iceberg:

Ruby Franke: Parenting advice YouTuber given maximum sentence for child abuse

A Utah mother whose harsh parenting advice made her a YouTube influencer has been sentenced to at least four years in prison for child abuse.

Ruby Franke, 42, tearfully apologised in court as she learned her fate. She previously pleaded guilty to starving and abusing her children.

In court, Utah prosecutor Eric Clarke said that two of Franke’s children, aged nine and 11 at the time, lived in a “concentration camp-like setting” and called her a significant threat to the community.

“I was led to believe that this world was an evil place, filled with cops who control, hospitals that injure, government agencies that brainwash, church leaders who lie and lust, husbands who refuse to protect and children who need abuse,” she said.

I’m not trying to discount the possibility of Putin having kompromat on the Republicans, but I wonder sometimes if we give too much credit to our foreign adversary. I tend to prefer Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.” We don’t need Putin holding dossiers of unsavory material over Republicans to arrive at the same result. The Republican Party of today is a reactionary party; they react to whatever their leader says, because they feel that showing unity is the only way to preserve their power in a country that is very clearly passing them by. They’re scared and angry because the world is changing around them, and they want to change it back, because White American Jesus (or any one of a dozen assorted reasons that essentially add up to the same thing, since not all Republicans are necessarily religious). With that in mind, Putin is a staunch believer in the status quo; just look at his efforts to bring back the glory of the Russian Empire. Once the tangerine wankmaggot voiced his admiration and approval of Putin, the lapdogs fell into line. It’s as simple as that.

But the entire point of the Republican Party right now is two-fold: Be yes men for the Boss, and be against the other guy. Whether it’s technically against their interest or not doesn’t matter. Democrats are pro-Ukraine, the former guy is pro-Putin, the choice is obvious even if it’s painful.

Beyoncé just made history once again.

On Tuesday, Billboard revealed that the “Alien Superstar” musician, 42, became the first-ever Black female artist to top the Hot Country Songs chart thanks to her single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which also debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100 chart.

“Texas Hold ‘Em,” which was officially serviced to country radio on Feb. 13, took the top spot from Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves whose duet “I Remember Everything” has sat at No. 1 for 20 weeks.

The track amassed 19.2 million official streams and 4.8 million in all-format airplay audience, with 39,000 sales in the U.S. through Feb. 15, per Luminate.

Unfortunate for all those involved.

A little girl who was digging a hole on the beach with her brother Tuesday afternoon at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea died when what began as a fun day in the sun took a tragic turn — the 5- to 6-foot deep hole suddenly collapsed, burying the siblings in the sand. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics, after digging them out of the sand on the beach at 4424 El Mar Drive, rushed the girl to the Broward Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where doctors pronounced her dead, according to the department’s spokesperson. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies took the young boy to the hospital in stable condition, said Pompano Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Sandra King.

Among many other lies…tfg lied:

about allowable usage of MAL ignoring the covenant restrictions. Objective not open to interpretation

Was wildly, almost absurdly aggressive about future sales values

And then simultaneously, massively devalued everything for property tax purposes.

These were not mere differences of opinion or approach. They were reckless and deliberate frauds with the intention of doing exactly what they did:

Reduce property taxes
Gain more favorable loan terms (if not loans at all)

Texas is good but I actually prefer her other release -16 Carriages. It was number 9 last I saw.

It really should remind everyone that black music traditions are deeply rooted in country. It feels like it has a real connection to the old rhythmic slave songs, sung while working in the fields.

For me, it feels like a ‘real’ song, a personal one, one she did without any consideration of it being popular or successful. Not a song you can dance to, One you just listen to. I find it one of her most powerful songs.

Heads up! 5,000 pound satellite coming in hot!

A European Space Agency satellite is expected to reenter and largely burn up in Earth’s atmosphere on Wednesday morning.

The agency’s Space Debris Office, along with an international surveillance network, is monitoring and tracking the Earth-observing ERS-2 satellite, which is predicted to make its reentry at 3:53 p.m. ET Wednesday, with a 7.5-hour window of uncertainty. The ESA is also providing live updates on its website.

“As the spacecraft’s reentry is ‘natural’, without the possibility to perform manoeuvers, it is impossible to know exactly where and when it will reenter the atmosphere and begin to burn up,” according to a statement from the agency.

The exact time of the satellite’s reentry remains unclear due to the unpredictability of solar activity, which can change the density of Earth’s atmosphere and how the atmosphere tugs on the satellite. As the sun nears its 11-year cycle’s peak, known as solar maximum, solar activity has been ramping up. Solar maximum is expected to occur later this year.

Four school committee members asking the Massachusetts National Guard to help with security issues at Brockton High School say students are “causing chaos” and disrupting the learning environment too often.

School committee members Joyce Asack, Tony Rodrigues, Ana Oliver and Claudio Gomes held a press conference Monday to discuss their request.

“We do need to take our schools back into control and make sure our students have a safe learning environment,” Rodrigues said. “Because what’s going on at the high school is disheartening. Kids are losing precious learning time when kids are causing chaos.”

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey issued a statement Sunday saying she is “committed to ensuring that schools are safe and supportive environments.” Healey added that she has been in touch with local officials about the concerns at Brockton High School.

NBC: back to back stories on their homepage:

Doctors and patients fearfully proceed with IVF after Alabama court rules embryos are children
How the 2024 presidential election may threaten health coverage for millions

The first is what we’ve discussed here since the ruling came down yesterday. The second is magic balance fairy bulkshit burying the lede.

One party is threatening health coverage for half of all Americans, and undermining health coverage for the rest. The GOP are out to wreck health care and coverage for all women. They want to reduce their health care coverage, make reproductive care options impossible to obtain, and increase maternal mortality rates and infant/prenatal care worse.

The other party is trying to save women and their health care options.

NBC needs to do better and explicitly state that it is the GOP that intends to threaten health coverage for millions. That’s the story. GOP is intent on trying to go after Obamacare again, even though it’s more popular than ever.

The AL Supreme Court is the final arbiter of state law, and the case was decided under state law. This could be appealed to the US SCOTUS if the party that lost wants to claim a federal issue is involved, but it was a state law that the AL Court used to make its ruling.

That said, I doubt the court wants to explicitly come down on the side of claiming that an embryo outside the womb is a person. That raises all kinds of questions and legal issues for everything from insurance to inheritance rights to taxation.

Alabama’s Supreme Court doesn’t give a shit what they did to all the other areas of law, so long as they stick it to women and hold that a bunch of cells outside the body are a person.

Every GOPer who amplified James Comer’s compromised lying “witness” Smirnov was peddling Russian misinformation - by the witness’ own admission.

The man accused last week of delivering false allegations to federal investigators about Hunter Biden and President Biden’s business dealings told officials after his arrest that individuals “associated with Russian intelligence” were tied to apparent efforts to peddle a story about the first son, federal prosecutors revealed in a court filing Tuesday.

Alexander Smirnov was arrested last week after being charged with two counts that alleged he lied to the FBI. Special counsel David Weiss — the Trump-appointed prosecutor tasked with investigating the president’s son — accused Smirnov of providing his FBI handlers with fake allegations about Hunter and Mr. Biden in 2020. He claimed the two Bidens each accepted $5 million from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. The claims “were false, as the Defendant knew,” according to the charging documents filed against him.

A judge ordered on Tuesday that he be released from custody on a personal recognizance bond.

Smirnov’s attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, declined to comment further.

In a court memo unsuccessfully urging a judge overseeing the case to keep Smirnov behind bars pending trial, prosecutors wrote Tuesday that after he was arrested last week for lying, “Smirnov admitted that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story about Businessperson 1.” Businessperson 1 appears to align with Hunter Biden.

This should permanently kill Comer’s hardon to get Hunter impeached.

The Alabama mess was actually a 2-stage process. The first step was a post-Dobbs “personhood” law. The ALSC ruling expanded the definition. That crosses AL borders if it becomes the definition for other “personhood” states, like FL. Might become a national issue at that point.

I made the awesome discovery this morning that one of my cats likes to chase the mouse pointer. I had my work laptop in bed* and was doing all the little tasks required when one takes a day off work (put the sick day on the corporate calendar, put the sick day on the internal calendar, send an email to my manager, send an email to the team) and Sakura was with me on the bed. She noticed what I was doing and then she noticed the mouse pointer and it was GAME ON to try and catch the pointer.

The last cat I had who would attack the mouse pointer (but on my computer monitor) was the late, lamented Xena. But I would let Xena sleep on my desk (or, rather, she slept on my desk and that space was dedicated to her). These guys know that my desk is off limits except when the Great Temptation (the printer) is making a racket. So I don’t think it’s generally going to be a problem. Other cats I’ve had have been all, “I see nothing.” It’s weird how some cats notice things and for others, it’s just not there.

* For the record, 99.95% of the time I sit at my desk when working on my work laptop. This was an exception because I was being lazy.

Donald Trump has some work to do in narrowing down his shortlist for running mate in 2024—with the former president confirming at least six names during a town hall event on Fox News Tuesday night. Moderator Laura Ingraham tried to pin him down by listing a series of Trump’s former primary rivals, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Vivek Ramaswamy, as well as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, but Trump simply confirmed that all are on his shortlist. “Honestly, all of those people are good,” he said. “They’re all good, they’re all solid.” Trump had especially nice things to say about Scott, who was in attendance at the South Carolina event ahead of that state’s primary on Saturday. “He’s been such a great advocate,” Trump said. “I have to say this in a very positive way: Tim Scott, he has been much better for me than he was for himself.”

The soccer superstar’s small, symmetrical, “almond-shaped” nips have cashed-up men forking out $5,000 for a procedure to perfect their pecs.

“People want David Beckham’s nipples,” Dr. Marc Everett, a plastic surgeon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, told the Daily Mail on Wednesday.

Dr. Elie Levine, who also has a practice in the same swanky neighborhood, says he’s now performing the procedure once every two weeks — up from a handful of times a year.

“It’s definitely a growing trend,” he declared, saying he’s also heard men saying they need their nips to look just like Beckham’s.

Dominion gains access to Newsmax texts, thanks to a ruling that allowed Dominion access to personal texts by employees and journalists:

Dominion Voting Systems is entitled to review personal communications and text messages of Newsmax Media journalists in its defamation suit against the conservative media company, a Delaware judge ruled last week.

The ruling is a blow to Newsmax, which successfully avoided such a mandate in a similar case and sought to allow its employees to voluntarily offer up any relevant communications.

Dominion sued Newsmax for $1.6 billion in 2021, claiming that the conservative news network defamed its company and falsely claimed it rigged the 2020 election. The case is one of more than 10 suits brought by voting machine companies against media companies and individuals who made stolen election claims.

A trial in this suit is scheduled to begin in September 2024.

In legal filings, Newsmax said it was unable to obtain and deliver employees’ private communications on personal devices, arguing it had “no legal right or practical ability to obtain this data.”

It also argued it wasn’t required to give Smartmatic, another voting company maker suing the conservative news network, access to personal cellphones in a similar case, and shouldn’t be forced to do so in this case.

But Judge Eric Davis, the Delaware Superior Court judge who oversaw Dominion’s case against Fox News and Fox Corporation earlier this year, disagreed with their argument and ruled on Dec. 1 that the company did in fact have to comply with a court order requiring such materials.

Look for Newsmax to settle, given that their exposure in this case is even worse (and the damages request is for nearly $1.6 billion). Bankrupt these fuckers.

I know we want this to go to trial and watch them get completely crushed by a judgment in excess of what was requested as damages. But Newsmax lawyers are probably of a better kind than those who offer their services to Trump and they’ll insist on settling to keep the damage to a minimum. It’ll still be for hundreds of millions, but that beats paying out a billion or more. I think the lawyers will ultimately hold sway on the corporate bosses at Newsmax.

There was also a time a little later when the wiper control module was located under the hood, and not with the rest of the electronics under the dashboard. I had to replace mine once when the control module burned out, as you would expect, from electronics exposed to engine compartment temperatures.

Your career light is flashing red because you’re a seditious treasonweasel who is enabling those seeking to invalidate election results when GOPers lose. You back Trump and those who tried to overthrow the govt to keep him in power despite losing the election based on certified election results that were free of voter fraud - voter fraud that none of Trump and his coconspirators could prove in a court of law. The GOP, however, engaged in rampant election fraud - trying to invalidate results that were properly conducted and counted, and smeared those workers who put in their time and effort to count the votes.

Bought off is more likely. No, I don’t think Boris Badenov is going around passing out bags of cash, though that method is suitable for pulpit pimps since they could claim that a bag of cash literally fell out of the sky and the IRS would have to take their word for it. Instead, I suspect the Russian influencers work by indirect blackmail, they bribe their targets with information and other favors they have extorted from others. They troll the pedophile networks, and possibly other forms of criminal communication, looking for people who might be able to provide, say, insider investment information or such esoteric favors as elite college admissions. This is easy stuff for professional agents. This is especially so since, unlike legitimate law enforcement, they have no obligation to obey the law.
There are exceptions who can be blackmailed directly. The forgotten but not gone Madison Cawthorn, for example, was an almost laughably obvious conduit for Russian propaganda. This included statements he clearly did not understand, for example, that Russian hypersonic missiles would easily “sink our [non-existent] Black Sea fleet.” Then he ran his reckless mouth about repug coke orgies and, lo, the embarrassing “cousin video” became public and he was duly defeated by the simple suspicion that he might be gay.
This raises another important point that should be obvious to everyone: Conservatives are easier to blackmail because they appeal to the puritanical bigotry of their base and are therefore much easier to catch violating their own loudly declared standards. The revelations about Jerry Falwell, for instance, would not have hurt, say, a liberal Hollywood producer. Similarly, the cousin video would have embarrassed a liberal politician but it would not have ended their career. Voters would have seen it as a disgusting, and potentially misleading, intrusion rather than a deal breaker.

Trump Campaign Spent More Than It Raised, While PAC Helped on Legal Fees

Donald Trump’s campaign spent more than it raised in January, a worrying sign for the Republican 2024 presidential frontrunner whose broader political operation is also funding his legal fees.

A Trump-allied political action committee spent $2.9 million on legal fees in January alone. Separately, Trump’s campaign took in $8.8 million, but doled out $11.4 million last month, according to filings late Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission. The campaign began February with $30.4 million cash on hand. Its biggest expense was the $4.7 million it paid for advertising time.

Bankrupting his campaign, and the RNC, will be added to his looooong list of bankrupt entities. Bravo.

Gotta disagree: or rather, proffer the observation that the level of negative blowback for transgressions of “standards” by conservatives
tends to vary depending on the status (wealth, influence, official position, fundraising ability, etc.) of the transgressor. “Puritanical bigotry” is certainly the philosophical foundation of the American RW, but it’s generally used as a means of enforcing standards on “THEM” - “US” usually get a pass (though normally after some public ritual of confession/contrition; sincerity optional).

Case(s) in point: Rep. George Santos (R) is outed as a liar, fraud and scamster: yeah, he got booted out; but there was a non-trivial bloc of his fellow Republicans who thought he got a raw deal and should have brazened it out. Sen Bob Menendez (D) got indicted on some scam, and Senate Democrats immediately called (near-unanimously) for his resignation.

My parents liked soft pop and a lot of country so I grew up around it even if I got … other influences (my father was a janitor who innocently brought home a lost & found record - The Ramones “Rocket To Russia”. I was never the same boy again… 😱😈😎 I also learned from his Miles Davis and Herb Alpert records so perhaps it balanced out in the end… Sketches of Spain, Bitches Brew & Whipped Cream as well as that Rocket to Russia 🥰 and those are just the names I remember. ..) But Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Loretta, Glenn, Hank Sr. (his son when he wasn’t being too stupid), etc… and so on. So much impact of Sturgeon’s law now but my memory is full of the 10%…

A distant acquaintance (friend of a friend), Dr. Cristin Welle, was on CNN to talk about Elon Musk’s Neurolink: video.snapstream.net

I think she did a fantastic job. She is definitely correct in that results really need to be vetted and peer reviewed and validated.

one thing that I think is important to recognize is that you know, neuralink and Elon Musk are not the first to have a person control a cursor with their thoughts. In fact, BlackRock, the company along with their collaborators at brain-gut, have been doing this for decades. So actually what he’s describing is not particularly new in the broader scheme of scientific literature.

GA Supreme Court throws out decades of its own precedent to fuck over defendants.

The Georgia Supreme Court has overruled two decades of its own precedent by deciding that a criminal defendant’s guilty plea can stand in cases where a judge failed to advise the defendant of all the rights they waived when pleading guilty.

In a unanimous opinion issued Tuesday, the court said it was wrong to have invalidated guilty pleas in cases where defendants were not expressly told about each of the rights they waived.

The court declined Tuesday to set aside the guilty plea and life sentence of Donald Green in the shooting death of Andre Winder, after a Fulton County judge failed to tell Green that he was waiving his right to be protected from self-incrimination.

Well whodathunk it when it comes to that asshole Christopher Rufo?

Chris Rufo, a frequent Fox News guest who has the ear of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump, contributes to the far-right IM-1776 magazine and maintains an explicitly collaborative and supportive relationship with its editors and writers, including would-be “warlord” Charles Haywood who leads a network of armed extremists bent on ending liberal ideals, reported The Guardian.

“[IM-1776’s] editors and writers — many of them so-called ‘anons’ working under pseudonyms — have variously advocated for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act; celebrated figures such as the ‘Unabomber’ Ted Kaczynski and the proto-fascist Italian nationalist Gabriele D’Annunzio; and advanced conspiracy theories about the Covid pandemic, and what they term the ‘regime’, a leftist power structure that they imagine unites the state, large corporations, universities and the media,” the newspaper reported.

The outlet ran a “manifesto” by Rufo called “The New Right Activism” last month in both its online and print versions, and he has publicly urged his followers to buy and subscribe to IM-1776. He said during one of the Twitter spaces he’s co-hosted with the magazine’s editors that he hoped to incorporate the “dissident right” into mainstream conservatism.

“I think there is a room for engaging the dissident right and the establishment right,” Rufo said. “I think we need to have a bridge between the two and engage in thoughtful dialogue.”

Haywood, a former shampoo manufacturer turned wannabe warlord, contributes to IM-1776 and apparently helps fund its publication, has published six bylined articles on the website using eliminationist rhetoric against his enemies and calls for “the total, permanent defeat of the left, of the ideology at the heart of the Enlightenment.”

Well this was utterly predictable:

Fearing prosecution, UAB pauses in vitro fertilization after Alabama embryo court ruling

The University of Alabama at Birmingham health system has paused in vitro fertilization procedures following an Alabama Supreme Court decision due to fear of criminal prosecution and lawsuits, a spokeswoman said.

A statement emailed by UAB spokeswoman Hannah Echols said they are “saddened” for patients who want to have babies through IVF. The process, which involves fertilizing eggs outside the body and then transferring embryos to the womb, accounts for about 2 percent of births in the United States, according to RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. The UAB Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility made the move after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos had the same status as children in wrongful death lawsuits.

“We must evaluate the potential that our patients and our physicians could be prosecuted criminally or face punitive damages for following the standard of care for IVF treatments,” Echols wrote in the email.

al.com

And not that I think fertility specialists are reading LGF, but I’d think hard, very hard, before treating any person resident in Alabama with IVF. It’s not just the possibility you could end up in court, but your insurance might not want to cover you either, because of the insane possible liability.

FOREIGNER guitarist Mick Jones has revealed that he is battling Parkinson’s disease.

The 79-year-old musician, who has not performed with FOREIGNER since 2022, opened up about his diagnosis in a social media post earlier today.

He wrote: “Fans will have become very aware that for some time now, I have not been performing onstage with the band. Several years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. I want everyone to know that I am doing alright. However, I’ve always liked to be at my best when performing onstage, and sadly, at present, I find that a bit difficult. I am still very much involved in the background with FOREIGNER and remain a presence.

“Parkinson’s is a daily struggle; the important thing is to persevere and remind myself of the wonderful career I’ve had in music.

“I thank all the fans who have supported FOREIGNER throughout the years and continue to attend our concerts — I want you to know I appreciate your support; it always means so very much to me, but especially so at this point in my life.”
