Rall Wraps Around

Opinion • Views: 4,480

One columnist who’s always willing to take his overheated far left rants further than anyone else is Ted Rall, and now he’s taken it so far that he’s wrapped around and joined the far right: It’s increasingly evident that Obama should resign.

Obama is useless. Worse than that, he’s dangerous. Which is why, if he has any patriotism left after the thousands of meetings he has sat through with corporate contributors, blood-sucking lobbyists and corrupt politicians, he ought to step down now — before he drags us further into the abyss.

His cartoon work has shown support for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and suggested that the U.S. might give Iraqi land to Israeli ‘settlers’. This is nothing much.

MIAMI — We expected broken promises. But the gap between the soaring expectations that accompanied Barack Obama’s inauguration and his wretched performance is the broadest such chasm in recent historical memory. This guy makes Bill Clinton look like a paragon of integrity and follow-through.

From health care to torture to the economy to war, Obama has reneged on pledges real and implied. So timid and so owned is he that he trembles in fear of offending, of all things, the government of Turkey. Obama has officially reneged on his campaign promise to acknowledge the Armenian genocide. When a president doesn’t have the nerve to annoy the Turks, why does he bother to show up for work in the morning?

Rall was so obviously expecting, against all the evidence so painstakingly excavated about the man, a Messiah and instead got true-to-type a Chicago politician. Having one’s unrealistic expectations dashed against the rock of reality is going to be hard to accept.

Do the nirthers count as far right? They don’t want him to resign, they just want him escorted out of the building.

Meanwhile, much of the far left is having a snit-fit. More of them supported Obama than have supported a Democrat in a long time. They were expecting something very dramatic and revolutionary, and they’re not getting it. Washington remains Washington.

Hmm, I should be nicer to Obama. Anyone who offends Ted Rall can’t be ALL bad.

Nevermind his numerous political sins, I loathe Rall for his artwork and his complete incomprehension of what humor is supposed to be. Rall actually has had the nerve to completely dump on and dismiss Art Spiegelman as an artist vastly inferior to himself, claiming Spiegelman’s position at the New Yorker was due to his influential wife.

Now I don’t always agree with Spiegelman but dammit the man is usually funny, and, unlike Rall, can actually DRAW. The incredible sour grapes Rall displays in dissing a superior artist give some clue as to his mental issues.

re: #74 FurryOldGuyJeans

Actually, I also agree with his sentiment about the Armenian genocide (though not with the way he put it … “annoying the Turks” isn’t quite the trifling matter he seems to think it is). But

I refer here to Obama’s plan for “preventive detentions.” If a cop or other government official thinks you might want to commit a crime someday, you could be held in “prolonged detention.” Reports in U.S. state-controlled media imply that Obama’s shocking new policy would only apply to Islamic terrorists (or, in this case, wannabe Islamic terrorists, and also kinda-sorta-maybe-thinking-about-terrorism dudes). As if that made it OK.

In practice, Obama wants to let government goons snatch you, me and anyone else they deem annoying off the street.

If Rall truly doesn’t understand the difference between preventative detentions for terrorists caught overseas committing or trying to commit acts of war against the United States and snatching US citizens off the street for being “annoying,” he has more than a few screws loose.

There are some limits. You can’t legally refuse a hotel room to a man because he’s black. I think you CAN, however, refuse to lease your hotel to a Nation of Islam conference on the grounds that it will hurt your business or community standing, which is what this guy seems to be doing. I think he could realistically say he doesn’t want the security risk.

113 HAL2010  Sat, May 30, 2009 10:19:50am

I know this is OT, and its not even 150 responses yet (maybe the rant the post is about counts?)

Anyway, recently Charles linked to a story of a “anti-jihad” demo in Luton that ended up in riots. It seems that we now know who was behind it, a Dave Smeeton, a man who just happens to be an old acquaintance of Paul ‘Lionheart’ Ray.

Here is a Daily Mail article on the matter:

Shortly before the Islamic Centre, which houses a mosque and school, was set alight, staff received a string of threatening anonymous letters. One warned: ‘We know who you are … we have plenty of pictures of you … we are watching you … we will certainly have you for what you did this week’ [a reference to the homecoming parade].

A second was littered with references to the crusades, including the name of Reynold de Chatillon, whose brutality towards Muslims in the holy land was infamous.

‘Saladdin once preached Jihad against the Christian kingdom, so now we preach our Jihad against Islam!’, ranted the letter, which described Muslims as ‘parasites’ and ‘Allah’s vomit’.
Scenes of violence in the centre of Luton

Scenes of violence in the centre of Luton

A similar coat of arms and Crusader imagery is featured in a notorious anti-Islamic website penned by someone calling himself Lionheart.

Lionheart, we discovered, is Paul Ray, 32. Ray used to run a computer repair shop in nearby Dunstable, but is now unemployed. Last year, he was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and is still on bail.

Asked if he sent the poisonous letter to the Islamic Centre weeks before it was torched, Ray replied: ‘This is the first I’ve heard about the letter. The Muslims must be trying to pin the firebombing on me.’

Guess which organisation Paul Ray belongs to? Yes, that’s right, March for England. He took part in Sunday’s demonstration, but says he was not involved in any of the trouble. Ray calls Smeeton a ‘very good friend.’

And on a more positive note:

The Muslim community turned on extremists in their midst yesterday, telling them they were ‘sick and tired’ of their behaviour.

The angry confrontation came in Luton, where anti-Islamist protesters brandished England flags last Sunday, before clashing with police.

The latest violence erupted as arguments raged between fellow Muslims shortly after Friday morning prayers in the Bury Park area of the town.

Muslim groups clash in Luton

Heated: The two groups clash after members of the Luton Muslim community decided to move a group of extremists on, with officers struggling to hold them back

Passing traffic ground to a halt as the large group of moderates confronted about a dozen extremists.

As the radical Muslims began to set up their stall, they were surrounded by a crowd shouting ‘we don’t want you here’ and ‘move on, move on’. Angry words were exchanged and scuffles broke out between members of both groups, with the extremists shouting ‘Shame on you’ and ‘Get back to your synagogue’.

The moderates chanted ‘Out, Out, Out’, and after an uneasy stand-off, police officers were able to persuade the extremist group to leave the area.

Apologies for the OT, but I thought it would be of interest.

The incredible sour grapes Rall displays in dissing a superior artist give some clue as to his mental issues.

i had no idea about Rall until this post—and I LOVE spiegelman as an artist, adore Maus, and will fight with anyone anytime about the status of Maus as literature. Just reread Maus and its sequel this week, as it happens.

If I refuse to debate, I’ll still get the thirty-five emails accusing me of not daring to debate, ending with me being a douchebag. So maybe pseudonymously. Trouble is, he’d still know it was me.

In response to one of Rall’s previous mouth droppings I wrote:

Let’s see…if we on the Right were to treat the Left the way that Great Comrade Stalin treated anyone he suspected of being an opponent, let alone someone who was an actual opponent, would Comrade Rall still be breathing, let alone continuing to rant like a mentally disconnected lunatic who’s off his meds?

I wouldn’t think so.

If Conservatives dealt with the adherents of Libéralisme Moderne the way the Left has dealt with humans in general whenever the Left has obtained unrestrained power, there wouldn’t be any Liberals left standing. Of the universities and the urban centers of Liberalism there would be nothing left but smoking ruins, and there would mass graves from coast to coast.

In my own view the present day Left, like the unschooled barbarians who plagued civilization before them, are essentially parasites. If the Hun or the Mongol were to take “no” for an answer to their demands for food and other material goods they would die very quickly. Compulsion, taking things and persons by force, is inherently necessary to the parasite manner of existence. Those who resisted had to be killed as an object lesson for others.

The Left, the present-day literate post-marxian barbarians, not only need material support they also need spiritual support as well. Barbarian chieftains and tribal witch-doctors demanded degrading and often dangerous acts of worship from their subjects, up to and including human sacrifice, in order to assure themselves that they would still have a roof (or a tent) over their heads and food to eat the next day. Those refused to obey were worked over by the goon squad or simply killed.

In the classrooms and editorial offices of the Left the demand is for unquestioned agreement without regard to the actual facts of reality. The self-styled intellectuals of the Left are the first to demand “speech codes” and other forms of censorship lest they be identified as frauds and poseurs and subsequently bounced out of their comfortable ivory towers, no longer insulated from a real world that demands real thought and real labor.

I wonder if some of these lefties turning on ‘zero’ has any implications for 2010 and even 2012? I have always thought that the novelty of voting for ‘the historical first black president’ idea was a 1-shot deal. Now that Americans have that out of their system, I don’t think they will do that again. Obama’s poll numbers aren’t lousy, but they aren’t great either (look at the POTUS approval ratings on the left sidebar of the RCP website). Yes, it is too early to really say this will have a effect, but if this continues, that becomes a trend and trends are important

166 Sunlight  Sat, May 30, 2009 10:46:33am

So if Rall gets says “overheated” things objecting to how Obama is operating that cross some threshold, his observations have to be re-allotted to the “right”? Really? Because unless the left actually wants Herbert Marcuse style marxism, they eventually will squawk, because that is who is in office. Soviet marxism was ever so corrupt and bad for the little people (which is how I think of my station during this administration). So if Rall was hoping for the world to change into his version of utopia, he blames Obama when the world doesn’t cooperate. Why does that mean he has wrapped around to the right?

From wiki….

After graduating, Galt becomes an engineer at the Twentieth Century Motor Works where he designs a revolutionary new motor powered by ambient static electricity with the potential to change the world. Like Ellis Wyatt, he creates what many had for years said was impossible. When the company owners decide to run the factory by the collectivist maxim, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”, Galt organizes a successful labor strike (but this time getting employers, inventors, businessmen and industrialists to go on strike against statist laws that violate their rights), proclaiming his promise to stop the motor of the world. Galt begins traversing the globe (while working as a general labourer for Taggart Transcontinental), meeting the world’s most successful businessmen, systematically convincing them to follow in his footsteps; one by one, they began abandoning their business empires (which, Galt convinces them, were doomed to failure anyhow, given the increased nationalization of industry by the government). This strike forms the backdrop of the novel as the mystery which protagonist Dagny Taggart seeks to uncover, with Galt as her antagonist (the novel was originally titled The Strike).

Galt represents what would happen to productivity at the right side of the Laffer curve.

I think that in both cases there is an accompanying fantasy that because of the INCREDIBLE deceit that has been uncovered and dealt with, a whole new day will dawn—sort of another Revolution without the fighting or general unpleasantness—and someone else will step in. Possibly Naomi Klein.

They’re not thinking rationally, or taking into account the functional structure of the U.S. government. You can see that Rall’s not using reason here—he wants Obama to resign in recognition of the fact that Rall think’s he’s a weasel—well weasels don’t resign out of embarassment. Because they are weasels.

A lot of people put a lot of emotional money on Obama being the president they wanted in the late sixties, and never got. These same people will now hate him with a passion equal to the passion they directed at Bush. He was supposed to make a clean sweep, throw open the doors, kiss the feet of the world, and never do anything mean again. His failure to do that is unforgivable, because they’ve worked Bush up in their minds into a figure of total evil, and anything of his that Obama continues…well, you see how it goes.

Maybe because he’s hating Obama, ya think? Is this a difficult point to comprehend?

Only people on the right are capable of hating a politician? Hmmm. I understand what you’re saying, but I just don’t agree with the conclusion. Some of my lefty friends have created an entire political philosophy based on hating Bush. I was at UCSD when Herbert Marcuse was there and he used to sit in the kitchen of student parties in their rented beach houses and tell us… well, listen to Michelle and Barak and that could be a recording of Dr. Marcuse. I actually think many people, even dems in a passive, self-preserving way, will push back against marxism. They are wishing things could be this dreamy vision… I’m listening to my friends to see when they might realize that their dreams of windmills and switchgrass (before they are ready for prime time) are going to starve a bunch of people internationally who have counted on our economy to get out of hunger. Micro loans won’t cut it unless people can buy.

Well without getting into Right or Far Right, I don’t appreciate the way in which Obama is guiding this country.
There is a huge difference in wanting Obama’s policies not to work (on the theory that he’ll change them) to wanting to impeach him or have him remove himself from office.

We are talking about people who believe that their President is on a countrycidal rampage to deliberately destroy all that they hold dear. Now that the ‘Obama must resign meme’ has been given this prominent boost, I think you’ll see a lot more of these people repeating it.

He did a piece on Gorbachev’s death, where he basically blamed him for the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan—because if the Soviets had pursued their war there, none of this would ever have happened. The mind quivers like a bowl of Jell-O.

Considering what he’s written about Tillman, I’m not surprised.

Actually, I have to agree that it’s a misnomer to say that Rall has gone “around to the right”. He is essentially complaining that Obama hasn’t turned out to be LEFT enough for him; too much like Bush, etc. The Cindy Sheehan/Code Pink crowd has the same complaint (as witnessed by their Bush-era-like rally in DC a couple months back); that hardly makes them “right-wingers”.

I agree. The hard-right whack cases have enough going for them in their little crazy world then to have to pin lefty nut cases on them, like Ted Rall. Unless, as you imply above, we consider Bush to have been far right.

No, they (at least the sane ones), just want to whip up enough anger toward him that he only lasts one term.

Sure, but we are not talking about the sane ones here, we are talking about the screaming ones. And there seems to be plenty of them these days.

Yep, me too and the fact that those folks couldn’t understand, EVEN AFTER THEY LOST IN COURT, that Obama was playing them and making them waste their time on something just so stupid (if there had been ANY truth to it, is there any doubt in your mind that Hillary wouldn’t have found it?) as to be beyond rational comprehension.

I truly believe that Obama made a brilliant political decision when he chose to ignore all that. He never addressed them, he just let it all ride.

Obama supporters and liberals in general are completely joyous about anyone on the other side wasting time on this BC stuff.. I promise.

I’m with you—I’m pretty damn cynical and I always assumed that if there was an issue there, the Clinton machine would have uncovered it and then flogged it EVERYWHERE (and I say that as a lib who initially supported hillary)

My wife-woman and I were chatting over breakfast just this morn. She is the payroll department for a local food manufacturer, her office is located in the hall where the workers enter the building and lots of them stop and speak on their way to work.

One of her buddies is a young black fellow of 25. He stops most every day to flirt and talk sports. Yesterday, after stopping to pick up his paycheck, he began to vent a little.

‘What is this damned President of ours doing to us?’ he asked. ‘How come every month now I have a little less money in the bank? Why isn’t my stimulus money more than this little old tiny dribble? How come gasoline is going up again? Why do my groceries cost more every week? How come my Newports cost $6 a pack? What the hell good is it doing me to have a black President?”

Kinda early to hear stuff like this, I would have thought.

I suspect that there are many people out there who had Obamanisms when he was elected, but have become sorely disappointed in the Anointed.

His point, I believe, is that he was playing by the rules. He was working. He was saving money. He pays his bills on time. He pays his taxes. He has no more children than he and his women can support.

And he doesn’t care for folks telling him what he may buy, how he should use his time, or how large or plush his automobile may be.

I can only talk about my weekdays, since weekends are basically my work days. This past Thursday, did a 4 mile hike on top of Mount Falcon, over-looking Red Rocks Amphitheater. A bit annoying having the warm up acts at Red Rocks invading the quiet of the mountain tops. Like having a 10 square mile boom box in the woods.

But the hike was good. Saw deer, tuffed black squirrel, lots of birds, horse shit, mountain bikers, fresh air, all at a healthy 7500 feet.

Jefferson County where I live has more open space parks and trails per capita than most counties in the country.

A lot of it under a half hour’s drive from my apartment in Golden.

Ted Rall has dehumanized himself.

re: #158 Charles

There are a LOT of right-wing blogs calling for Obama to resign.

This is just deranged. Calls to resign are meaningful only when they come from the core of one’s own party. Barry Goldwater went to Nixon and explained to him how things stood. With LBJ, I can’t name names but there must have been some august senators whispering sweet dooms and glooms in his ear.

For Obama’s resignation to be even in the air, he’d have to have approval ratings in the 20’s, and some very bad decisions that he owned, decisions that worked out very badly, coming home to roost. And then, it would take the voices of several senior democrats—-senators, governors, and the like, to get the ball rolling.

Republicans shouldn’t hold their breath, and most definitely shouldn’t hope. The kinds of bad decisions that would be involved would be the sort that hurt the nation, not just the reputation of the administration. Think 30% inflation, a military Dunkirk, the loss of a city to Nork nukes, Iranian nukes, or one of the above but attributed to terrorists.

Our part, for now, must be that of the loyal opposition: we hope your administration succeeds. We hope its policies save the economy and keep external threats at bay. When our considered judgment is that this or that aspect of the overall administration plan is so counterproductive that the democrats wouldn’t adapt it if only they saw the train wreck coming, then it will be our duty to warn them and try to save them from that train wreck, and save their reputation, because the train wreck would mess up the U.S. and that counts for more than the joys of Schadenfreude when the smashup comes.

We’ve got this housecat, Big Boy. Now BB isn’t ever going to be mistaken for a feline Einstein, but he gets by on a sweet disposition.

He likes to sleep indoors at night, but loves to roam the property during daylight hours. He’ll go out when we wake up at 4:30, come in for a snack at six when the wife leaves, and then go out again when I go out.

But he has learned that if the wife steps naked onto the back deck, she’s going to sit in that big ol’ bubbly pot of water for a while and then go back in. So if he sees her naked on the deck, he comes running as hard as possible for the house. He’s figured out that he can come in, eat a bite or two, get a drink of water, go to the litter box, and then sit in front of the door. In just a few moments she’ll come back in the door and he can go right back outside.

“Wraps around.” Damn, I love it when computer jagon enters mainstream usage. I wonder if anyone even remembers who invented that term, and why it was called “wrapping around” instead of, say, “rolling over” or “edge jumping.”

I think the computer jargon reference is to circular number lines, ie, a consequence of using a finite number of bits for a binary counter. With 8bits for example, you can represent integers in [0,255], or in [-128,+127], as there are only 256 ways to arrange 8bits.

Charles’ answer in #185 about rotate-right or rotate-left manipulations of bits within a register may be correct (or not), but that’s a different idea.

I’ve no idea who invented the term.

I noticed it when I first started posting here, I was called a Coomie for the first time I can recall, and some could not believe anyone in the military could be a leftie. I leaned that not everyone on the right was a knuckle dragging fascist, so we’re even now. :)

Yep. And when I was about one year old, I hit a waitress on the head with a bottle.
Really. (So I’m told.)

She was apparently getting all cootchy-coo with me; I got annoyed, picked up my bottle by the nipple, and bopped her on the head. No damage done, fortunately.

Gonna’ refrain.

I’m always struck by how comedians in the 70’s and 80’s were able to have a more honest discourse on race. Look at Eddie Murphy on SNL with Mr Robinson’s Neighbourhood, or the famous Richard Pryor/Chevy Chase sketch where a racist white employer gives a black applicant a word association test.

Those skits were all bitingly funny and offered real social criticisms, and many of them couldn’t be made now.

YABT by Biblical literalists. The left wingers try to change the definitions of words until they can pretend everything you’ve said is actually a code that proves you are evil and need to be stopped for the greater good, while the right wingers try to literalize every figure of speech so they can pretend you’re a raving madman who needs to be stopped before you kill someone’s family.

You’re laughing now. But they actually are opposed to all science, not just biology. They view the scientific method itself as an attack on religion, as it attempts to explain the physical world and it’s workings without imposing a direct reliance on God at every single step.

They are already expanding their colossal ignorance beyond evolution to include the cosmological distance ladder, the age of stars and galaxies, planets orbiting stars other than the sun and other topics. Theirs is a profound, militant ignorance that is beyond the reach of logic or rational thought, because they exclude such tools on the grounds that they abet Satan.

I think that was Garrett Morris, not Richard Pryor. And, come to think of it, was it Chevy Chase, or Dan Akroyd?

The closest modern equivalent to what you’re talking about would be, off the top of my head, Dave Chappelle.

I’m in the entertainment business, maybe I hang with a better, “leftier” brand of liberal than you do. We have the best lefty’s in the world. :)

Ted Rall is a household name with some of the lefty’s I know.

Wow, he absolutely isn’t a household name at all for people like me, where I am. :)

I’m a lefty urban academic; we love Maus and we read Tom Tomorrow. TR looks like a total loon—and I have no problem asserting that he can’t be a big deal for the netroots— the respectable liberal progressive blogosphere— or I’d know him.

(in other words, maybe he’s linked loads on kos or DU or HuffPo comments, but those places —esp the comments— are the lefty version of Free Republic. A fever swamp filled with loons)

If to you, “The Nation” is somehow “centrist”, that says a lot about you.

And yes, Rall is fairly well known. His wretched cartoons have been published regularly, in, e.g., the Village Voice, as well as the Washington City Paper and a number of other weekly urban hipster papers.

I’m not saying the Nation is centrist at all— just that it’s by no means “far left’
I think it sucks, frankly.

“Dead Honkey” was Pryor/Chase, while “Kill Whitey” was Morse and somebody else.
I believe that “Kill Whitey” was a response to an appalling performance at some local talent/variety show where this otherwise sweet-seeming old lady went off halfway through her song on some godawful racist rant, without missing a beat.

Now what do with the FarrrrrrLeft who espouse following the ignorance of past political demigods whose only claim to fame was blindly following their puppet masters. 423 tyree  Sat, May 30, 2009 6:19:48pm

So Ted Rall is getting so close to the fer right that he can almost touch them.

I have said for decades that politics is like a circle with a line down the center. At the top are a multitude of people striving to do good, Republican and Democrat, divided by the line and not to far apart, facing each other and talking. As you get to the far right and the far left, you get further from that line. As you keep going the line crosses the bottom of the circle. Here you find Ted Rall and the far right crowd, facing away from each other and screaming to be heard at the top of the circle. If they would just look over their shoulder, they would see how close the other side is.

Ted Rall is at the bottom of that circle of politics, and shame on all those who thought he belonged among the good people at the top.
