Warning: may induce a trance-like state. Do not listen while operating heavy machinery.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Tom Huizenga | April 27, 2022
Roger Eno’s home is part of what once formed an 11th-century abbey called St. Wilmott’s, situated on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk near England’s southeastern coast. The bucolic setting mirrors Eno’s quiet, slowly evolving music which, for this Tiny Desk (home) concert, features five pieces from his new album The Turning Year.

Eno refers to his process as “decomposing,” taking the time to strip away all nonessentials to finally arrive at something more pure and perhaps more powerful. He opts for quality over quantity. Every note, carefully chosen, seems to have its own preeminence. At an old upright piano — with the sustain pedal firmly engaged — Eno taps out his slender but potent melodies, gently conducting his string players as they float above and between the notes, providing color and warmth.

While there’s an Erik Satie-inspired Zen quality to “A Place We Once Walked,” with its seesawing rhythm, the feather-light notes of “Something Made Out of Nothing” recall the deep ambient spaces that Eno created with his older brother Brian on their 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. In his writing about The Turning Year, Roger Eno says he thinks of these pieces as “a series of short stories or photographs of individual scenes, each containing their own character.”

To close the performance, Eno introduces his two daughters Cecily and Lotti who sing an arrangement of “Bells.” On the album, it’s a typically wistful Eno piece for solo piano, but the harmonizing voices here give the music a lullaby quality — and offer up a taste of what it must be like to make music with the Eno family.

The nice thing about the aluminum batteries is that while they weigh the same for the equivalent storage as an LI battery, they would only take up a third of the space.

Couple of thoughts.

How would Al battery weight compare to a conventional internal combustion engine block? Could you pop the bonnethood to behold a battery bank and have a similar weight distribution to an ICE vehicle?

And is the alumin(i)um battery tech less, uh, burny than lithium?

re: #191 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I know there are some experienced photographers here, so I have a QUESTION.

I have several rolls of exposed film, 35mm and 120, all of it B&W ISO 400 Ilford, that has been in a freezer since exposure for, in some cases, upwards of 20 years. Is there any chance that this stuff could be successfully processed today? I had dreams of building a darkroom long ago, but then life beat the ever-loving piss out of me and now here I am with no darkroom and a freezer full of film.

I’m now in a position where making my own prints is still out of the question, but I could probably swing processing negatives. I’m sure they’d be degraded, but is it worth the expense and effort to try to develop these ancient rolls of film?

Frozen? Yes, possibly a bit fogged but nothing a good lab (emphasis on Good) can’t handle. If I had those rolls in hand, I’d probably go with either

oldschoolphotolab.com

or

dwaynesphoto.com (until Kodak pulled the plug they were the last Kodachrome processor)

Note: I personally would not try to home process these, simply because I am way out of practice.

I just called Comcast/Xfinity yesterday because I have a cable box in one room that’s acting wonky. After the tech call, he says he can give me a better deal than I’m paying - I was paying 185/month +14 bucks for HBO which I hardly watch anymore - plus internet. 313/month total. New plan (for at least the next two years) 213/month total…and increase to 1gig on the Internet speed.

I was all, “I’ve been paying how much for TV/Internet for the last few years?”

CLEVELAND — After saying she would like to respectfully bow out of consideration for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2022, Dolly Parton said in an NPR interview released Friday that she would accept the honor gracefully, having learned that the Rock Hall inducts more than just rock groups and artists.

“Well, I’ll accept gracefully. I would just say thanks and I’ll accept it because the fans vote,” Parton said in the interview. “But when I said that, it was always my belief that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music, and I have found out lately that it’s not necessarily that. But if they can’t go there to be recognized, where do they go? So I just felt like I would be taking away from someone that maybe deserved it, certainly more than me, because I never considered myself a rock artist. But obviously, there’s more to it than that.”

I successfully replaced the battery in my Kindle Fire HDX. Only one glued down strip to heat and pry off, then four tiny screws and a couple of tabs. There was a crunch as I pried off the screen, and I thought I wrecked it, but it’s fine.

It had been out of service for more than a year because it wouldn’t charge, and it’s really nice to have it working again.

I would suggest Dolly accept that offer. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has not exactly been an example of what rock and roll truly is and has left out many who should be there.
And enshrined some that have no business being enshrined.
Dolly should be enshrined wherever there is a spot to HAVE Dolly enshrined.

She truly is a generational talent and a marvelous human being.
One day we will awake and Dolly will have moved on. As we all shall.

Thus, for all its vaunted oil and gas riches, Russia’s export earnings last year were actually lower than Belgium’s. Like other Western democracies, Belgium manages to augment and unlock the economic value residing in human beings. Putin’s petro-kleptocracy is woefully inept on both counts.
*snip*
Russia is depopulating — even after Putin’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, its total numbers are lower today than when the Soviet Union collapsed. Russia’s working-age population and its pool of prospective 18-year-old conscripts are also falling. Shrinking societies can prosper, as Germany and Japan have shown. Kremlin policies all but preclude that path for Russia.
*snip*
In 2019, according to the World Health Organization, overall Russian life expectancy at age 15 (male and female combined) was lower than in Sudan or Bhutan — places designated by the United Nations as “least developed countries.”
*snip*
National wealth is indispensable to state power and human well-being, but the Russian system produces remarkably little private wealth. According to Credit Suisse, total private wealth in Russia in 2020 amounted to $3 trillion: one-ninth of Japan’s, one-sixth of Germany’s, and scarcely more than Sweden’s (a country with a population 14 times smaller).

If there’s anything that demonstrates how COVID-19 seems overall to be transforming into an endemic, much less lethal, disease in the United States— it’s the current postings on sorryantivaxxer.com which all reflect deaths last year. Those who I know IRL or are FOAF who have been stricken this year recovered relatively quickly, with no hospitalization. The recent flurry of positive cases in DC also showed no one with serious illness. Yes, the overall new case count has doubled over the past month, but deaths have shown a steady decline and there is no sign of hospitals being overrun by COVID cases. Of course, last summer I also thought the pandemic was reaching its end here.

Other nations, such as China, still are grappling with a pandemic, but many have less effective vaccines.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the county case numbers here and I’ve said I’m ok with doing more “unnecessary” stuff or maybe not masking in stores (assuming the employees aren’t. If they are, I feel obligated to) when the cases go under 100 for a week.

When I said this the week cases were 255. Right after that the mask mandates and such mostly went away in California. The next week the cases were 242. A week after that when supposedly all hell was breaking loose again and several states put back on mask mandates, it only went up to 405. This last week was 409.

I think we might be at the point where realistically it’s endemic and almost no one is getting hospitalized or dying if they had a vaccine and the booster. Perhaps a fuzzy or soft herd immunity for lack of a better term.

Anecdotal evidence can lead to serious investigations and studies but is not sufficient to reach any conclusion. Musk has no medical training. Like so much he has said in the past, he thinks his brilliance and success in managing an auto company and an aerospace company grants him expertise in other subject areas.

The damage he will inflict on Twitter may be irreparable, if he succeeds in his acquisition.

So apparently the management here decided to approach a weekend they knew over a week in advance was oversold in the time-honored tradition of management across various spectrums: Spend days hoping the problem will fix itself, then scramble at the last moment to bodge various fixes together in the hope that the whole thing doesn’t fly apart just long enough to pass the crisis point.

Helped me quit smoking when nothing else would. Only side effect was slightly more vivid dreams and I’ve always had those. FOAD Herr Musk.

This is something that’s always fascinated me: why certain illnesses or medications impact the way we dream. We’ve all I’m sure been through a fever dream, for instance. Why are those invariably bad? In some ways you’d think maybe the body would encourage sleep in illness by making the dreams really excellent. Presumably because it doesn’t want to reward the body for sickness, maybe.

Thanks. I am also way out of practice, but I had thought to home process them. The film rolls I have are by no means worth spending money on.

Nevertheless, thanks for the photolab links.

Did you ever think these undeveloped rolls of film may contain photos of Jimmy Hoffa’s funeral?

I think it’s the opposite: the body doesn’t want the brain to miss out on the fun. More specifically, the brain is always receiving input from the body to process, even when we’re asleep, and so they get mixed in with the brain’s normal night-time function of shuffling through random input.

When I was young and stressed I got a Xanax prescription. I had LSD like dreams with intense colors and I could remember them in detail when I woke which is completely not normal for me. I can’t remember a dream past 30 seconds after I wake up. Yeah, Xanax was fun for dreams.

Musk is doing a classic fallacy.

Cause and effect is not determined by anecdotes.

Wellbutrin is prescribed to those who suffer depression.

Those who suffer depression are much higher risks of suicides.

Wellbutrin does not cause suicides. It prevents more of them from occurring.

Looks like China has bigger problems to deal with than just Putin - or COVID-19:

The founder and chair of one of Asia’s biggest private equity investors has criticised the Chinese government for policies that he says have resulted in a “deep economic crisis” comparable to the global financial crash.

Weijian Shan, whose group PAG manages more than $50bn, said his fund had diversified away from China and was being “extremely careful” about its portfolio in the country.

“We think the Chinese economy at this moment is in the worst shape in the past 30 years,” he said in a video of a meeting viewed by the Financial Times.

Back during the Obama years, one of the things that the “debt hawks” loved to talk about was a fictional scenario where China would “call in” America’s debt and totally ruin our economy. And how “owning” so much US debt meant they “owned” the US. Given their current financial situation, I don’t think Beijing could afford to even consider such a scenario, much less act it out in the near future.

I remember that - it was pure fantasy then and it still is. I’m also seeing that the US Dollar is getting stronger, too; it’s definitely gone up here in Czech Republic - though a far cry from the days of “King Dollar” when I first came here in 2001 (back then, it was about 40 Kč : $1 and today it’s 23 Kč : $1).

Does the lottery commission raise the advertised annuity value? No, they decrease the one-time cash payout. Because of course they do.

The British Ministry of Defense has reportedly seen indications that Russian President Putin is preparing a Statement for May 9th during the Victory Parade in Moscow, which its expected a General Mobilization and a Declaration of War against Ukraine will be declared.

Would this be tantamount to a declaration of war against any nation actively aiding Ukraine?

OSINT is most likely reporting off this bit of tabloid nonsense:

dailymail.co.uk

in which the former British Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, speculates that Putin might declare war on Ukraine during the May 9th Victory Day parade. He admits in the interview that sparked that clickbait headline that he has seen no absolute proof that Putin will, in fact, do that and he’s just musing that it’s possible.

Russia has gone back to its mystery-wrapped-in-a-riddle-wrapped-in-an-enigma default setting.

Point is, Putin cannot just get up and watch his soldiers, tanks and missiles parade past him on May 9th without making some reference to ongoing events in Ukraine. What will they be? is the 64-million Ruble question.

Given the analysis I read this morning, odds are the announcement he’s hoping to make is that Kherson has “voted” to become a new “republic” under Russian “protection.”

They seemed to have dampened the effects of the Evergrande collapse, but something like that is going to send out serious ripples even if managed well.

Oh yeah, that could’ve easily become a Lehman Bros moment for them, and thanks to some good stewardship, they’ve largely avoided a catastrophic meltdown. But there’s still likely going to be some fallout in any event.

That I could see, but it depends on whether the collaborationist authorities on the ground in Kherson can pull off a referendum by then.

America “managed” LB by bailing out the banks and f*cking everyone else. China chose a more “responsible” approach that spared a lot of the little people, but there was only so much the government could do to mitigate things.

Recent word is that they’re busily printing ballots for the “referendum” and the Russians just recently began occupying the City Hall and appointed a new puppet…er, “mayor” for the city. Given it’s just over a week to May 9th, I suspect the announcement of the “referendum” will be no later than Monday.

File that under “That’s not how any of this works.” Like everything else the GOP and glibertarians say about monetary policy, finance, and economics.

——

Fitch Ratings-New York-28 April 2022: The Florida state government’s move to dissolve several independent special districts on June 1, 2023 creates significant risk to the credit quality of these districts, including Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID), says Fitch Ratings. In response, Fitch placed the ‘AA-’ rating on RCID’s ad valorem tax bonds and the ‘A’ rating on its utilities revenue bonds on Rating Watch Negative due to uncertainty in servicing the RCID debt post-dissolution. We expect the state will ultimately work with various stakeholders to resolve the uncertainty in a way that ensures timely repayment of RCID debt, with reconstitution of the district as one option specifically offered in the bill. The failure to do so could alter our view of Florida’s commitment to preserve bondholder rights and weaken our view of the operating environment for Florida governments.

‘Nothing special. Just Lviv. I just went to have coffee. Just Angelina Jolie,’ she wrote in Ukrainian after filming the actress, who waved to her from the counter. ‘Ukraine is simply supported by the whole world.’

It’s always externalization of internal conflict. Always.

That is the basis of Fundamentalist morals and ethics: they grew out of the notion that we are inherently sinful, and unless we are working hard, resting and recovering from hard work, or praying and worshipping, then we are going to be tempted to sin, because we are all weak-willed and can otherwise think of nothing but how much we want to be out whoring, drinking, fighting, gambling and thieving.

So if you have ethics based entirely on guilt, fear, self-loathing and shame, then all you have to do is repress those restraints through stress, drugs/alcohol or mass excitement/hysteria and you have people who are truly unable to control their base instincts.

If the legislature, under the direction of the executive, can change change laws to control private industry, we are done.

I disagree. That depends on the laws. After all, our government has passed laws prohibiting companies from discriminating based on race, religion, gender; demanding reduced working hours and requiring minimum pay for hours worked; imposing safety requirements on the operation of facilities; outlawing lead in gasoline; outlawing dangerous drugs and requiring than any pharmaceutical products meet safety and effectiveness rules; imposing rules to stop pollution. Etc. etc.

There will always be a need to change laws to adapt to current conditions and standards, but in Florida’s case, we are dealing with arbitrary, petty and spiteful laws designed to exact revenge on political adversaries.

The Japanese yen has slid a lot in the last two months. For the last five years or so, the yen traded between 108 to 112 to the US dollar. Beginning in October 2021, the yen breached the 112 mark and moved to 115. Since March 6, the yen has moved to around 130 yen to the dollar and briefly breached 131 yen before dropping back to 129. It appears the cause is a divergence between US and Japanese economic policy. Basically, our Federal Reserve is raising interest rates, while the Bank of Japan has a policy of keeping interest rates at rock bottom to stimulate a moribund economy.

I don’t claim to understand economics (even as I work for a financial institution). But what I do know is that I can’t go to Japan because of their modern sakoku policy and the yen is the lowest it’s been in 20 years compared to the dollar and I am missing out.

DeSantis has repeatedly shown that he’s nothing but a petty loathsome tyrant, in a state full of brain-dead zombies who support such measures.

Why can’t I own Canadians?

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

My son took me to a restaurant down toward where the Illinois empties into the Mississippi. The restaurant has one huge central tank and a bunch of smaller tanks around the outside, with booths next to them. All of the fish were from the river. Ours had a big concrete statue of a snapper and some schools of smaller fish, and we were only inches away from them. I was really enjoying watching the bigger fish in the central tank when I nearly leapt out of my skin, while my son rolled on the floor laughing. The concrete snapper s-l-o-w-l-y stretched its head up to take a breath. It took me a while to get my heart s-l-o-w-e-d back down!

To the right “far left policies” means being anything other than totaly hateful to the powerless.

The problem with “the democrats have moved left” is thinking that anti-racism and anti-oppression of LGBT+ is “left”. It isn’t.

Racism and discrimination against LGBT+ is right wing, but being against discrimination isn’t left wing, it’s just not being a dick.
