One informal attempt to do a quick and dirty analysis of how many troops the Russians have. His numbers are that the last draft of 300k barely made up for losses and :ghost troops” (troops that were on the books, but didn’t exist because the commanders were embezzling the money.)

Boy, that’s a complicated region to start putting thumbs on scales.

Very true!

And it’s a seething mess as Putin pours more gasoline on the pyre.

As I understand it, the Iranians, particularly the IRGC, are trying to move in and replace the Russians. Supposedly they have already attempted to assassinate at least one Azeri Member of Parliament.

Plus, the Iranians have a sizable population of Azeri ethnics on their side of the border. Iirc, the young lady who was murdered by the religious police for not wearing a hijab was an Azeri ethnic.

Meanwhile the Turks and Israelis are apparently supporting the Azeris.

But yes, there is the turmoil in Armenia and Georgia. And of course, Chechnya and Dagestan.

In the ongoing battle in the Lehigh Valley, Penna. school district:

WFMZ-TV, Allentown, six hours ago

ACLU suing Saucon Valley School District over district’s decision not to allow After School Satan Club

Recap: The Good News Club was granted space to meet in the Saucon Valley Middle School. A parent and child from the middle school asked The Satanic Temple to set up an After School Satan Club.

When brought before the school board, many parents objected (‘cause Satan, though satanism isn’t taught in their club: science experiments, arts and crafts, and critical thinking and reasoning skills are).

The school board attorney advised if the board allowed the GNC as part of a limited public forum, they must also allow the ASS Club. The board in a bare majority passed the resolution to allow the club.

Days later, bomb threats and shooting threats were called in to the school and all the board members. The FBI traced the threats in the name of Jesus to a man in North Carolina, who has been arrested.

On those grounds, the board held an emergency meeting to revoke the permission of the ASS Club to have club meetings anywhere on school grounds. The parent complained, the attorney advised the board they could not ban them. The board banned them, saying they did not comply with requirements set out for clubs (untrue).

With that, The Satanic Temple sent a letter to the board saying they would assert their rights under the rubric of the limited public forum, the I Amendment guarantee to freedom of religion, and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. They offered again to withdraw their club if the GCC was also withdrawn. When the board refused to reconsider, the ACLU came in and warned the same. The board still refused, and now they have filed a lawsuit alleging violation of constitutional rights by the school board.

A president has never been indicted before. But one was arrested. (Washington Post, updated March 30, 2022)

A grand jury in Manhattan has voted to indict Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported Thursday evening.

This is the first time a former president has been charged with a crime. But a sitting president was arrested once.

In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant was arrested at the corner of 13th and M streets NW in Washington. This was not a high crime, but it was — at least theoretically speaking — a misdemeanor.

The man who led the North to victory in the Civil War was busted for speeding in his horse-drawn carriage.

The story of his arrest — confirmed in 2012 by Cathy L. Lanier, who was then D.C.’s police chief — was told in a remarkable but obviously forgotten story in the Sept. 27, 1908, edition of the Washington Evening Star under the headline: “Only Policeman Who Ever Arrested a President.”

That policeman was William H. West, a Black man who had fought in the Civil War.

“Since his retirement,” the story said, “he has decided to let the public know the true story of the arrest.”

President Grant paid a $20 bond, and forfeited it when he failed to appear in court.

Parent thanks Utah for book banning law that makes it ‘so much easier’ to challenge the ‘sex-ridden’ Bible (Yahoo!, March 26, 2023)

A Utah parent said that a book ban law passed in the state made it “much easier” to request that the Bible be removed from schools for its “sex-ridden” content.

According to a complaint filed against Davis High School in December 2022, recently obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune, the unnamed parent thanked the state legislature for making it “way more efficient” to request book bans.

“Now we can all ban books and you don’t even need to read them or be accurate about it,” the complaint says, with just a hint of sarcasm. “Heck, you don’t even need to see the book!”

‘Probably Not The Best Time To Give Up Your AR-15,’ Tucker Carlson Tells Viewers (Huffington Post, seven hours ago)

This sounds like incitement to me.

After a guest on his show warned that Donald Trump’s indictment marked a “civil war era” in the United States, Fox News host Tucker Carlson remarked that Americans should hold on to their assault rifles.

Carlson’s guest, right-wing activist Ned Ryun, also warned that America was headed for a “one-party state and authoritarian government” and urged Republicans to take up a policy of “mutually assured destruction” against Democrats, whom he accused of “launching nukes at us.”

“Probably not the best time to give up your AR-15, and I think most people know that,” Carlson commented after Ryun’s spiel.

Carlson hyped up the possibility of impending armed conflict for his entire show. Noting the recent mass shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, and Donald Trump’s indictment, Carlson had earlier asked a guest, “It almost feels like they’re pushing the population to react. ‘We think they’re demoralized and passive, let’s see if they really are.’ At what point do we conclude they’re doing this in order to produce a reaction?”

The decision was made after a proposal by sports minister Vadym Guttsait.

So 30+ counts of Business Fraud…now three or four of those might fall under the misdemeanor statute, but thirty of them?

he crime of falsifying business records can be committed in the second degree, which is a class A misdemeanor (N.Y. Penal Code § 175.05), or in the first degree, which is a class E felony (N.Y. Penal Code § 175.10).

Of course, how many people here think Trump is the kind of guy who will commit fraud to put more money in his pocket? I mean, the guy’s rich…why would he need to pocket walking around money?

Falsifying Business Records

If the person is also falsifying business records in the process at a business, that is an E felony with penalties of between one and a third to four years.

It is important to recognize that when the dollar amount is used as a means to figure out what the total punishment should be, the law allows prosecutors to aggregate, meaning to add up all the transactions together. This process can make the penalties associated with a New York fraud charge much more serious.

Therefore, if the person stole from their employer, falsified checks, and embezzled, each check from the employer will be added up to make the total.

Missouri Reps Just Voted to Completely Defund the State’s Public Libraries (Vice, March 30, 2023)

The book banning continues. Do they reënact the burning of the Library of Alexandria next?

The new budget sets funds for libraries to $0. Library groups say the move is retaliation for suing the state over its recent book ban law.

Late Tuesday night, the Missouri House of Representatives voted for a state operating budget with a $0 line for public libraries. While the budget still needs to work its way through the Senate and the governor’s office, state funding for public libraries is very much on the chopping block in Missouri.

This comes after Republican House Budget Chairman Cody Smith proposed a $4.5 million cut to public libraries’ state aid last week in the initial House Budget Committee hearing, where Smith cited a lawsuit filed against Missouri by the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri (ACLU-MO) as the reason for the cut.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area on this brisk spring morning. We’ve got indictment fever here, and it’s more than 2+ years in the making. Frankly, it was more than 6+ years in the making, given that the crimes occurred prior to Trump entering the WH and Trump’s coconspirator and accomplice, Michael Cohen is already serving time relating to some of the various charges likely included in this indictment.

But thing is, this isn’t just about the Stormy Daniels payments that were disguised as attorney fees/costs. You don’t get 30+ charges that way.

There’s a lot more under seal, and that’s what’s particularly surprising given that Bragg had dragged his feet on this case for months, two of his lead prosecutors quit over that foot-dragging, and yet here we are.

Bragg isn’t playing 3-d chess, or a Soros puppet. He’s an at-times barely competent DA who wouldn’t take up the case against Trump despite overwhelming evidence. We’re here in NY because of Bragg’s delays.

We’re here because the DOJ continues to foot drag on its own cases against Trump, and it includes obstruction going back to Mueller. DOJ refuses to prosecute a sitting president because of a DOJ memo stating as such, but there’s nothing to stop the DOJ from overturning that memo to allow a sitting president to be indicted.

That memo, going back to Nixon, gives presidents a get-out-of-jail card, when none is deserved. No one is above the law, least of all a president.

Trump engaged in crimes, before, during, and after entering the WH. He’s still committing crimes even after leaving the WH as he continues to conspire with those trying to end democracy in America and is inciting his base to engage in violence to further his ambitions.

Justice grinds slowly, and too slowly for political expediencies. We got here late, but we’re here. And Trump is doing what Trump always does - project his crimes and misconduct on others, while Fox does what it always does - project and misinform on same to help the GOP.

Between the Dominion and Smartmatic civil defamation cases and the Trump prosecutions, we’re seeing how right wing media and goddamned fascists use each other to gain power and money while distracting from their own crimes and malfeasance.

Documentation obtained through the Freedom of Act confirms the stickers were added in 2020 at the direction of Woodcox. Farr finds a June 2, 2020 email exchange between Woodcox and Sgt. Matthew Steppy discussing the stickers to be extremely disturbing.

“The email shows that the personal religious beliefs of former Chief Woodcox is the real reason for the stickers,” said Farr.

In the email exchange, Woodcox states any St. Clair Shores officer who objects to the stickers is “free to surrender to me any items they possess or will possess that have the same motto on them” seemingly referring to U.S. currency.

Steppy responds by saying he supports the decision and that he and any other Christian officers on the force “if we hear of any complaints regarding the decision to put In God We Trust stickers on the cars, we will address it immediately.”

“In this email, a 22-year veteran of the department says he and his fellow Christian officers are ready and willing to intimidate anyone who opposes the stickers,” said Farr. “There is no reply from former Chief Woodcox telling this religious gang not to do it.

“What more proof do we need showing that these stickers are divisive.”

re: #61 lawhawk

I’ve seen some Fox personalities claim that Bragg is so incompetent that a majority of cases brought are dropped. Why are they dropped? NYPD failed to bring sufficient evidence. Or the evidence doesn’t warrant the charges.

That’s typically why cases are dropped or the DA loses a case at trial.

Oh, and there’s precisely zero way that any of his lawyers would be caught off guard by the indictment announcement. Trump himself spewed that he was getting indicted 2+ weeks ago. He was off by a few days, but he’s indicted. They had reason to know indictments were coming, and prosecutors don’t have to let suspects know that they’re getting indicted ahead of time.

That so much of this is under seal also indicates that this isn’t just about Stormy Daniels.

Trump lawyers also say he’s not taking a plea deal.

Right… because a guy likely facing life in prison on the totality of these charges is in such a great position to fight the charges to trial and lose and face state and/or federal minimums on those charges at his age.

It also seems like media outlets forget that we already know what Trump can be charged for re: Stormy Daniels.

We know this because Trump is individual 1 in the Michael Cohen case for which Cohen was convicted on multiple counts. Cohen acted as Trump’s money-man and lawyer and acted at Trump’s behest. That means Trump is a coconspirator/accomplice, and conspiracy charges flow from that relationship. While Cohen was charged in federal court, there are state charges that mirror the federal charges, and NY has additional financial crimes charges too.

Put together, we’ve got at least Cohen-related conspiracy and financial crimes, money laundering, wire fraud, and campaign finance violations to consider.

But I’m also thinking there’s additional state crimes being considered here, given that Trump CFO Weisselberg has also just switched lawyers.

Speaking of guns, I had a conversation with my dad regarding guns. Namely, making sure that he knew I’m not necessarily anti-gun per se, just that to me, adding more guns to a dangerous situation doesn’t seem like the right solution to me. He took it well enough, but I know I’m a disappointment to the family.

How did we get from

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

to

“Anyone who opposes unrestricted access, possession and carrying (even concealed) of all the ordinance we can get our hands on is anti-American”?

How did we get from

“Taxation without representation is tyranny”

to

“Taxation is tyranny”?

or from

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…”

to

“My religious beliefs take precedence over US law!”

re: #69 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

If that’s the case, then don’t call the police, pray to God.

No suit against the city police department for the stickers per se would win, because of our national motto being changed to “In God We Trust” (despite a lot of us not, but because we needed Christian territorial marking on all our stuff).

However, the E-mails the man received in the freedom of information act request show that the real reason the stickers were placed were explicitly religious, and a freakin’ Christian gang said they would intimidate any officer who opposed the idea at the time.

The current mayor endorses the stickers, as does the current police chief.

The man questioning this is questioning the process by which they were obtained and the bullying of those who disagreed.

What Does George Soros Think About All The Smears?

The 92-year-old philanthropist’s name is invoked constantly by Republicans to explain all manner of things they don’t like. Predictably, his name was ubiquitous in Republicans’ response to Trump’s indictment.

Semafor asked Soros about the attacks, and he engaged, sending along a Wall Street Journal op-ed in which he explains why he supports progressive DAs.

“As for Alvin Bragg, as a matter of fact I did not contribute to his campaign and I don’t know him,” Soros said.

Soros is Jewish, and the attacks can function as an antisemitic dog whistle.

Indicting former leaders isn’t uncommon anywhere outside the US. It’s gotten more common as democracies hold leaders accountable for their actions.

Heck, we indict governors of states pretty regularly, and these are just federal charges. Still others didn’t serve time despite convictions.

The argument by GOPers is not that Trump didn’t commit the crimes. They’re claiming that the DA is biased or somehow railroading Trump, despite overwhelming evidence that Trump engaged in a criminal conspiracy thanks to fellow coconspirator Michael Cohen getting convicted on those charges.

NY Young Republicans: Trump Is Our Christ

talkingpointsmemo.com

The New York Young Republican Club was among the first to react weeks ago when signs began to emerge that Trump was likely to be indicted in state court in Manhattan.

They staged protests, and contacted nearly every journalist in the Five Boroughs and D.C. to inform them of it.

After Trump’s indictment, the group issued a statement which, in my view, far exceeded those of even his most die-hard supporters. Read it here:

President Trump embodies the American people—our psyche from id to super-ego—as does no other figure; his soul is totally bonded with our core values and emotions, and he is our total and indisputable champion. This tremendous connection threatens the established order.

What does this mean? That for the aspiring young Republicans of New York City, Trump fulfills the spiritual desire for recognition that eludes us all? “His soul is totally bonded with our core values and emotions, and he is our total and indisputable champion.” If they’re trying to get our attention, they’ve succeeded!

That would seem to make more sense to me, though running in 2024 could be Plan B. (Gov. DeSantis appears to be preparing a bill to repeal Florida’s law that says a candidate for a different office must resign from the current one.)

If Mr. Trump suddenly drops dead, flees the country, or for some reason sinks like an aircraft carrier anchor in the polls, he would want to be positioned to run in 2024.

If Mr. Trump somehow manages to put together a credible campaign, he can just shift the money over to a 2028 run if we still have a democracy.

As an aside, I’m a big advocate of political campaigns being required to dispose of any excess money left over from an election, to prevent building up unassailable war chests like Sen. Mitch McConnell has. Every election you start at zero.

Authorities were called to the scene around 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Romney Meadows Apartments.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello identified the deceased infant as 16-month-old Isiah Johnson. An autopsy performed Wednesday confirmed he died from one gunshot wound. Costello said the coroner’s office was still waiting on a police investigation and toxicology reports to declare the manner of death.

According to the Journal-Courier, the 5-year-old found a handgun inside the apartment. In addition to the two minors, one adult was at the home when the incident occurred, said Lafayette Police Department Lt. Matt Gard. A 911 call that brought police to the scene was from outside the home.

A white supremacist Putin-loving oligarch? Sounds right for the GOP and its core values.

Hell, the funniest scene in White Christmas, starring one of the most popular “masculine” icons of that era - Bing Crosby - was when Crosby and co-star Danny Kaye dressed in the female leads’ dresses and pretended to be them, lip-synching to their famous duet “Sisters,” while the ladies escaped to the train station.

She is using a layman’s view of the law, which is that anyone can have their day in court to “prove their innocence.” That mechanically, it actually works in the inverse direction - it is on the state to prove guilt - is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, Trump has been charged with a crime. He can defend himself against that crime. If the state has nothing on him - if this is all a “witch hunt” - then he can demonstrate this in front of the whole world, since undoubtedly the media will be watching this trial closely. If it is not, then conviction will follow, and the charges will have been justified.

In extremely local news:

The plumbing firm in Gering called Friday to say our new on-demand hot-water heater would be delivered to them today.

They said the plumbers would inspect the heater to ensure they have all the parts and it works correctly. If it is all good, they will start the two-day plumbing project in our house tomorrow. (Tuesday instal the water heater, Wednesday instal the new plumbing for our washing machine and move the machine to its new location in the kitchen: For that we have to clear out the area where it will go so I will probably drop out of here for a couple days because that will take some time).

180
Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  Mar 31, 2023 • 8:18:43am

The fact that Trump’s personal lawyer and ten other former advisors or associates have all been convicted of crimes only proves the extent of this witch hunt, right?

181
Nerdy Fish  Mar 31, 2023 • 8:19:08am

Now, I will caution that if the jury votes to convict after the state presents its case, then the “witch hunt” will simply move up a level. Rather than it being a corrupt prosecutor, it will be a corrupt judge. (That the jury is responsible for the actual conviction will mostly be lost; they may find fault with “corrupt NYC jurors,” but they will focus on the judge, and adverse rulings he made against the defense.) Then it will go up to the New York State Court of Appeals, and they will find something to complain about there. Then they will attack Governor Hochul for not pardoning him from these obviously bogus charges.

Even if you were seriously considering such legislation and had the constitutional authority to enact it (which you do not), your request for information from the District Attorney and his former attorneys concerning an ongoing criminal probe is unnecessary and unjustified.

Smack.

For decades now, the GQP have fantasized, and even campaigned on, about locking up Bill, Hillary, Obama, Fauci, etc., etc., And now that the law has finally caught up with their Dear Leader, they have the audacity to be outraged. Fucking comical.

I have a strong suspicion that the real reason is that his detail has nothing planned out because every time they brought up the subject, he broke out into a frothing rage and started screaming at them that he was never going to be arrested and he didn’t want to hear any suggestions otherwise. So now that it’s become reality, they’re scrambling to put something together with his lawyers while he fumes in his office.

The man never won the popular vote, over 90% of his presidency was spent with approval ratings in the 40s, and polls right now show that he’d lose if the election were held today.

But they will NEVER let go of this fantasy that he’s some working class hero who the majority of Americans are slavishly devoted to.

Texas GOP’s fast-march to creating a fascist state continues:

Texas GOP Proposes Bill To Allow Sec Of State To Overturn Election Results In State’s Largest Blue County

Republican members of the Texas state legislature introduced a slate of bills Thursday designed to subvert election processes and curb voting rights in the state. One of them would even allow the Texas Secretary of State to overturn election results in the state’s largest Democratic-leaning county, with very little rationale for doing so.

On Thursday, Republican state senators introduced Senate Bill 1993, a bill targeting Harris County, a diverse region that includes Houston and is also the most populous county in Texas, to a Senate committee for debate.

[…]

The bill was introduced alongside over a dozen other bills seeking to restrict voter access and overhaul the state’s elections process. Senate Bill 260, for example, would allow the secretary to suspend election administrators without cause, and Senate Bill 1070 would enable Texas to withdraw from the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a bipartisan program that maintains voter rolls across state lines that has recently been targeted by far-right propaganda.

State Republicans quietly introduced the bills in the State Affairs Committee on Thursday morning—without giving the mandatory 48-hour notice. “Every part of today’s hearing highlights the subversive attacks on elections in Texas,” Ehresman said, “and (SB) 1993 is a part of that.”

I still wonder when Russians hacked the RNC servers at the same time they hacked the DNC servers…why didn’t the Russian allow Wikileaks to release anything from the RNC servers…my Spidey Sense thinks that Putin has a lot of dirt on Republicans and he’s blackmailing them. If he didn’t get the dirt from the servers he got it from his little redheaded honeypot who seduced Republicans…
