Trump didn’t “botch” his social media launch. New registrants have been promised full access by the middle or maybe end of March.

I have decided to take an unwavering stand against daylight saving time this year. I know my refusal to comply will create some headaches for my students and colleagues. But it will be clarifying to find out who stands with me and who stands against. /

Significant sanctions on Russia tomorrow. I hope they freeze the assets of every Russian entity doing business in the United States…and Europe. Also freeze the assets of every Russian national here on visa. Fuck them all until they change their behavior.

I want to see destitute, pitiful, crying oligarch refugees herded onto rusy IL-78s at Heathrow for the flight back to St. Petersburg. I want to see Royal Marine boarding parties confiscate their yachts at gunpoint, and High Court bailiffs padlocking their Mayfair mansions.

I think I have mean fatigue. I am over it. I am tired of mean people breaking the world and other people in it for fun. Just because. Or because of some bullshit lame ass excuse. I know this crap has always been part of human life, but JFC it seems to be its own pandemic right now. And honestly, a lot of the time you have to be meaner than they are to get it to stop. This also pisses me off to no end. I have enough shit to do and I am tired, so tired of having to stop what I am doing and deal with this damned nonsense.

Good evening lizards. I am finished cleaning up the plumbing disaster upstairs(the rest is in the garage, another project to do once it dries out down there), got a decent dinner on the table(pork roast with potatoes, carrots and a bit of celery and a salad with avocado). Then I took Cleo out in a rainstorm that’s been happening since about noon for potty time, got her back in and cleaned up, got a shower, did a load of laundry, and before all the plumbing madness I did my once every two weeks grocery run and all that entails earlier today. So I am kinda sore and tired. Right now I am hanging out in bed with my weighted blanket, a big bottle of ice water, watching a bit of msnbc til I get tired of hearing repeating info on Russia and Ukraine waiting for the Delta 8 and CBD tinctures to work their magic. My son got on a guest list for a show in Atlanta tonight so he could interview one of the dudes in the band Immolation(it’s a metal band, could you guess?). So I won’t be sleeping til he gets back.

How was your day?

It would be fun to have radio equipment in front of the place. Very discreetly, of course. I amuse myself from time to time, picking up signals from those tire pressure sensors whose cars drive by me. It’s Syria all over again: After months of screeching that Biden has tried to provoke Putin into a war and pledging they would oppose any war efforts, they’re now going to shift gears without a clutch to declare that Biden is “weak” for not having thousands of troops ready to oppose Russian aggression. And the legacy media, being the gutless whores that they are, will act as though they haven’t spent weeks carrying water for the pro-Russia caucus.

Indeed. But I don’t think they will. In his rant yesterday, Putin pretty much outright said that Ukraine has no right to exist as an independent nation.

It’s a repeat of the Sudetenland Crisis of 1938; first, after the Munich Agreement, the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany….and then the rump Czech state became the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia once Hitler berated President Emil Hacha to capitulate.

The primary reason for her animus toward Trump is this — her full devotion to an aggressive US foreign policy. The question is: how many of these Republicans remain in the party and how many of these are so fearful of the GOP base that they will abandon these principles to avoid being primaried.

There’s been several references to Munich today by both sides of the aisle and it could be argued that what we’ve been seeing for months now was Vlad’s play at such and what it would have looked like in 1938 had a negotiated agreement not been met. He’s making a play at forcing the West to hold him to “only” gobbling up the Donbas in return for no further aggression and another redrawing of the borders.

But Biden’s national security team does have the authorization, doesn’t it?, to read these transcripts and interrogate the translators involved? The public may not learn the truth, but that doesn’t mean Biden, Harris, and others with high level security authorization cannot find out this information. It should be considered negligence on their part to fail to do so.

Therein lies the rub, as the lie that Trump was “tough” cannot be dispelled so long as the evidence to the contrary remains under lock and key. Until that information can be shared with the public in some fashion, we’re never going to continue to get fed this myth of “TRUMP: THE STRONG MAN!” by his sycophants.

Agreed, though at this time I suspect economic sanctions and bank freezes are about the best we can hope for. He’s pushed troops into the Donbass with the intent of all but daring Ukraine and the West to remove them by force so he finally has his casus belli to declare open war on Kyiv. Odds are he’s looking to stage another “annexation” such as he did in Crimea, forcing the new “republics” to vote to join Russia so as to make his land grab legit.

Interesting debate.

On one hand hippos are not native and could affect the local environment. (To say nothing of stomping on passersby.)

On the other hand, they are apparently viewed as a potential revenue source by locals.

Locals fret as Colombia to declare hippos invasive species

*snip*
People around Puerto Triunfo have grown accustomed to the herd of hippopotamuses descended from a few that were imported illegally from Africa in the 1980s by flamboyant drug lord Pablo Escobar, whose former ranch is nearby.

*snip*

Within weeks, Colombia’s government plans to sign a document declaring the hippos an exotic invasive species, according to Environment Minister Carlos Eduardo Correa. This means coming up with a plan for how to control their population, which has reached 130 and is projected hit 400 in eight years if nothing is done as they flourish in Colombia’s rivers.

*snip*

Scientists warn the hippos do not have a natural predator in Colombia and are a potential problem for biodiversity since their feces change the composition of the rivers and could impact the habitat of manatees and capybaras.

Lawrence O’Donnell made good point Monday night.

No judge is going to order tfg imprisoned. :(

The complexity would be far too great for the Board of Prisons and Secret Service to handle. And would prove far too disruptive to the operating of any designated prison.

Instead the judge would likely remand tfg to the custody of the Secret Service with perhaps some specific conditions. So life as a “ward of the state” would likely not be much different than it is today. Although perhaps with no rallies.

ETA - O’Donnell went on to point out that civil cases taking away tfg’s money would likely be far more life changing.

On the ReidOut Monday evening, Masha Gessen pointed out that today Putin abrogated all understandings, guarantees, and treaties associated with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Not just the ceasefire between Ukraine and the breakaway regions.

This is going to be a major global issue for a very long time.

The primary hurdle to getting a prison sentence for Clownstick is the jury pool. It’s not Merrick Garland or US Attorneys or MAGAts rioting. If you could get to a criminal conviction, I’m pretty sure stripping USSS protection would be academic.

Between 28 and 37% of the potential jury pool think his crime-ing is a feature not a bug, and a good one. It only takes one MAGAt to get on the jury.

In my lifetime, I have seen four of our governors serving time in real prisons, including two who were in office in the 21st century. So it’s not an alien concept to those living in Illinois. France and Israel, both democracies, have sentenced Presidents to prison.

But I understand your point. He is not likely to be put in prison but what kind of conditions can be imposed on a criminal who is confined to house arrest.

The treaties and agreements that we could cite as obligations to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its borders are the ones we’re also saying Moscow just ripped up and shat all over. We can’t cite something as both legally binding and as a dead letter.

Sure we can - we just say we still consider it legally binding, regardless of Russia’s actions and that Russia is acting in violation of international law as a rogue state.

That being said, devastating economic sanctions and weapons/materiel/insurgency training support to Ukraine are first and foremost.

The thing about living in representative democracies that abide by international agreements and laws is that the process is always more complicated than simply “I declare war.”

And Vlad’s become very experienced over the years in playing the system, generally by fomenting “rebellions” in neighboring states and then using those as pretext to “recognize” the regions in rebellion as sovereign states for the purpose of rolling in troops to “protect” them. Yeah, what he’s doing is blatantly illegal and it’s a mockery of international agreements, but possession is nine-tenths of the law and nobody (so far) has been willing to go to war with Russia to dispute his claims.

Indeed, but like her sister ship the IJN Musashi, they were taken out with carrier-based air power. The last of her class, the IJN Shinano, was converted to a carrier and sunk by four torpedoes from the USS Archerfish.

Technically we did at the Battle off Samar, which really showed the poor level of leadership by that point in the war since Kurita totally misread the fierce resistance of a few escort carriers and destroyers as having run into Halsey’s main fleet and chose to retreat.

But really, Yamato and Musashi were to the Imperial Navy much like Bismarck and Tirpitz were to the Kriegsmarine: show pieces. The latter were treated as commerce raiders because the Reich simply lacked the numbers to go toe-to-toe with the Royal Navy, while the former were built for a decisive battle that never came.

There’s no real way to escalate this any further than “full-blown war.” Vlad made it pretty clear yesterday in his speech that this is not simply a border dispute or a dispute over whether or not NATO is exercising undue influence over Eastern Europe. He does not recognize Ukraine’s right to exist, could really be argued that he doesn’t recognize any state carved out of the former SSSR as being a legitimate one (save those under Moscow’s thumb), and so views the land they sit upon as Russian land that he can do with as he likes.

There’s no diplomatic solution here other than Putin undoing everything he did yesterday by withdrawing the recognition of these “republics” and moving his troops out of Ukraine’s borders. Anything less than that is a defacto admission that Putin’s position is valid. And if the West does that, then Eastern Europe is going to fucking freak out. It also means that Taiwan is gonna start sweating bullets because Beijing is going to see that as a green light to start prepping an invasion force.

The precedent that Vlad is looking to set is that if you march into those “lost territories,” plant your flag, and nobody’s willing to go to war with you to dispute the claim, then your claim is valid. And that’s a box even Pandora would be loathe to open, since the number of nations that would be happy to roll into a neighboring state and yell “DIBS!” is not particularly low these days.

I noticed this recipe calls for cooking the pasta al dente in boiling water. That’s “good enough” for today’s generation, but in the old country (French Quebec) we would soak the noodles in lukewarm water, left outside in direct sunlight. It adds several hours to the preparation time, but is well worth the wait as long as a fox or bird does not steal your noodles.

I am going down the rabbit hole on carbon dioxide, CO2, measurements as an indicator of poor air quality, as it relates to CV19, within structures, i.e., poor exchange of covid laden inside air with fresh air from the outside
I have heard mentions of “good” and “poor” air circulation and acknowledgement that better air circulation leads to less viral load and less chance of catching CV19. I have never heard how air quality with respect to CV19 is measured. Apparently, CO2 is one way to judge how laden the air is with other people’s breath.
I am thinking of buying a CO2 sensor to play around with ($140-ish).
Curious if there are any LGF comments about this.

Statement from Estonian President Alar Karis:

We stand united with Ukraine. We will not walk away. We will continue to support you in every possible way.

I praise the Ukrainian leaders who, despite constant provocations, remain calm and express willingness to solve this conflict peacefully.

Russia must end the intolerable provocations and stop fuelling the conflict, which has been ongoing for eight years. Moscow should immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Ukraine’s territory and its immediate vicinity.

We strongly condemn all military and hybrid actions against Ukraine. We regret that despite diplomatic efforts, there are no signs of willingness to de-escalate - quite the opposite, [with] the buildup of Russian forces continues, including in Belarus.

I align myself with everyone who wishes we had a way to secure peace through the force of diplomacy and dialogue.

Indeed, it is a decisive moment in European history. President Putin will answer to future generations for his violent actions. As European and western leaders, we also have the responsibility to step up to our values [and] our commitment to a Europe that is united and at peace. We regret every single life lost.

It is our duty to protect our common values and the democracy we all helped to build. A threat to Ukraine is a threat to the security of Europe.

The minimum we can do is to step up our practical support to Ukraine, which Estonia has done and will continue to do. In the EU, we will deliver on a massive package of sanctions and do so swiftly and decisively. But most importantly we must keep the door to EU and Nato open for Ukraine and we must have concrete next steps for further cooperation and integration.

We know you will continue to value democracy and remain on the path of reforms. Eventually we will welcome you as the member of the European Union - you belong in Europe.

We support Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We remain fully committed to the policy of non-recognition of illegal annexation of Ukraine’s territories. Ukraine has a right to defend its borders and independence and we continue helping Ukraine to build its military capabilities to stand against the aggression.

The most important thing here for Putin right now is going to be to eventually grab Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, or at least a strip of land through them. All the talk about recreating the Russian Empire and all that horse shit can wait on a real pressing need for Putin. He needs land access to Crimea, and because the Kersh Bridge is sinking (according to some sources I’ve heard in the know) into the silt and is going to collapse so the only way to have reliable land access for heavy transport and rail into Crimea is via these 2 regions.

That being said, Putin is apparently at near Stalin levels of paranoia and isn’t necessarily acting rationally.

Also, this was said about it in a 2017 Euromaidan Press article:

In the media, there has been much lively discussion over whether the bridge-supports will stand on the shaky ground of the Kerch Straits. After all, as a number of experts have assured, the straits have multiple peculiarities which significantly complicate construction: a tectonic fault passes through the ground, with numerous ground volcanoes, under a thick, in some places 60-meters-thick, layer of silt. We will leave these questions to civil engineering experts.

I learned how to make congee from this recipe:
cooking.nytimes.com

I have a screen grab from 2018. The page is behind paywall now.
Congee is so easy:
I boil 2.5 quarts of water with 4 chicken thighs for a few minutes in order to skim the top, then put in 150 grams of short grain rice. Some salt. Stir often while it is coming to a simmer, then stir every 15 min. Simmer for 90 min to 2 hours. You have a fine porridge. At the end I add 4 fermented duck eggs, quartered. They taste good in the congee. Can flavor with some ginger.

Ken Screven, a retired television reporter known for decades of deep-voiced news reports delivered at the local CBS affiliate, is fighting to get back on his feet after a fall.

Piles of out-of-pocket medical bills are making recovery tougher.
Friends have put together a GoFundMe campaign for the award-winning newsman who has shuttled between Albany Medical Center Hospital and a Fulton County rehabilitation facility after he was injured in a fall at his home in October.

America, a country so rich our citizens can’t afford healthcare.

A coworker of mine had a near-fatal stroke the second week of January. She has insurance coverage through our employer but obviously her hospitalization and recovery have resulted in a lot of bills - not least of all because this all happened right after the New Year and she was nowhere close to meeting her deductible.

One of the specialists she has been going to is threatening to stop seeing her any longer unless she pays up and I regularly see FB posts from her and her friends begging people to donate to her GFM to try to get the spiraling bills under control.

This was a woman who, before the stroke, was relatively healthy and had what would be considered “decent” health coverage from her employer.

Right now, NATO’s options for getting involved are largely limited to economic reprisals against Russia and materiel support to Ukraine. The treaties and agreements that we could cite as obligations to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its borders are the ones we’re also saying Moscow just ripped up and shat all over. We can’t cite something as both legally binding and as a dead letter.

It’s a dead letter as far as anything promised to Russia is concerned.

That the other signers might wish to uphold their promised commitments to Ukraine and the Baltic countries is something they can consider following through with. Much as outside of the USA (who tore up an agreement with Iran about nuclear capability development under Trump) the other countries tried to continue to the agreed protocols.

What is the basis for China claiming Taiwan as “lost territory”?

About the same as in the 1950s when the PRC took Tibet. When the Nationalist Party formed Taiwan was firmly under the control of Japan. Many of the Chinese on the island weren’t particularly thrilled with the Nationalists when they retained power from Japan after WWII. There was a massive protest that led to a massacre by GMD/KMT of thousands of Taiwanese on and after 2/28/1947. The PRC has never had any governing role there.

Up to the late 1500s early 1600s it was no more than a rough frontier outpost for a handful of Chinese who weathered attacks by aborigines. The Portuguese came for awhile, then the Dutch built up forts in the south and tried to recruit Chinese farmers to come occupy. When the Dutch left it became a part of Qing-China’s territory. But, again, the Qing lost it to Japan in the Shimonoseki Treaty following the first Sino-Japanese war that concluded in 1895.

Slim to none. Well into the Qing dynasty, the idea of any island being a part of China was rejected. But late in the 17th century, the then-current rulers surrendered to China (part of the confusion in the coming of the Qing dynasty) and it remained Chinese until the Japanese occupied it.

It has a lengthy independent history before that, and evidence of settlement goes back at least as far as the Paleolithic.

It has a lengthy independent history before that, and evidence of settlement goes back at least as far as the Paleolithic.

There was an interesting set of incidents in the 1870s when a crew of Ryukyuan fishermen ended up marooned on Taiwan and were massacred by an Aboriginal tribe. Under advice from an American who had experience in subduing natives, the Japanese set up a punitive expedition based on the idea that the Ryukyuans were Japanese subjects, since the Japanese had recently kidnapped the Ryukyu king and annexed the islands. Before the government could halt the expedition, it set out. In the aftermath of meting out “justice” for the Ryukyuans, the Japanese were confronted by the Qing. But the Japanese could not get the Qing to clarify what exactly their authority was over the native people of that part of the island. Ultimately, it would be a couple more years before Japan forced Korea to sign the Kanghwa Treaty that opened Korea up to some Japanese trade and residence, which was the beginning (well, except for Ryukyus and Hokkaido) of their imperialistic endeavors.

One of my hobbyhorses here for ages has been to point out that Putin’s long-term goal is to reunite the former Russian/Soviet empire within its 19/20th-century boundaries and it looks like he has just taken another major step in that direction. His remarks about Ukraine make it clear that he is not going to stop at Luzhansk and Donetsk.

China would also claim Taiwan based on the fact that so many people fled there from the mainland.

But again, there is no such thing as International Law, there is only the principle of
What You Can Get Away With.

I believe that almost the entire world recognizes Taiwan as part of China, including Taiwan. Of course, there is no agreement on terms of unification, and the PRC’s actions in Hong Kong vividly illustrate that any assurances the PRC might give concerning local sovereignty are worthless.

I sense quite the grift happening where Rittenhouse lawyers set up right wing funding websites for their retainers and simply walk with all that gravy once all these cases are thrown out.

At first he was positioning himself as the somewhat reluctant hero, saying he would destroy the rifle he used once it was returned to him. I think he probably intended to auction it off, and denied that opportunity, is looking for as many payouts as he can get. He’s being trained to be a ghoulish grifter indeed.

The question is whether he is stopping for the time being. I think its possible Putin was playing crazy so that if he “only” sends troops into the separatist regions and doesn’t launch a full scale invasion, we’ll be relieved instead of outraged. Then if Trump regains power in 2025 and ends NATO, Putin can proceed with re-establishing the Russian Empire as he sees fit.

I think that’s exactly what it means. After all, the DPR and LPR are now “Russian territory” and thus, wouldn’t really be considered ‘abroad’.

Areas outside of those fictitious entities? Yeah, that would be abroad - outside Russian territory. And that means the rest of Ukraine.

TL;DR: Putin and the oligarchs are most afraid of being removed from power, not of NATO military action. He has long been a public proponent of returning to pre-1917 Imperial Russia borders, including Finland and many other countries now considered independent. He sees these countries as threats to his worst fear, because strong European democracies united under the European Union offer a safe haven for his critics and a model for Russians to envy.

According to the rethuglins/religious right, eradicating the LGBTQ+ Communities is the RIGHT thing to do, as they will find favor in their god’s eye for doing so. The current attacks on the Trans Community is just a continuation of that war. They lost ground on the Gay rights and marriage equality front. So they are are attacking the even smaller and more vulnerable segment of those Communities. If they succeed, they WILL move up higher on the chain until they succeed in eradicating us all.

When you have to invoke an evil imaginary friend who’s orders you’re supposedly following in order to pretend you’re doing the right thing, you’ve put in a lot of effort into not doing the right thing, while still feeling good about yourself.

We’ve established that “I was just following orders” is not an acceptable excuse for anything, and that’s when you didn’t just imagine the orders. They know deep down that they’re not doing the right thing, and are bad people. This makes them very brittle and angry.

seems to me that all the bloated beeyotch has to do is claim that she is too busy to take on a particular client if she has a problem with their godless gayedness - but it seems she *wants* to make a religious issue out of it.

Of course they want to make a religious issue about it, because White American Jesus commands them to force their Christian morality onto everybody. “Therefore go and make disciples” apparently has the emphasis on the “make” part.

from the AP article

The high court said Tuesday it would hear the case of Lorie Smith. The Denver-area designer offers graphic and website design services and wants to expand to wedding website services, but she says her Christian beliefs would lead her to decline any request from a same-sex couple to design a wedding website. She also wants to post a statement on her website about her beliefs. Doing those things, however, would run afoul of a Colorado anti-discrimination law. Smith had argued the law violates her free speech and religious rights.

The White House declared the Russian military’s movement to be an ‘invasion’ after Russia’s authoritarian leader recognized the areas of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent regions — including portions still under the Ukrainian government’s control.

Hours later Russia’s parliament approved a request by President Vladimir Putin to use military force outside of his nation’s territory, the Associated Press reported, stoking fears he could be plotting further military action after Kremlin troops already entered the Ukrainian dissident territories.

Putin said during a news conference on Tuesday that the Minsk agreements, which were aimed at stopping Ukraine’s conflict with Russian-back separatists in the country’s east, ‘no longer exist’ according to Russian state media and called on Kiev to demilitarize.

President Joe Biden will address the nation on the crisis from the White House at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

To me, though, it seems more like this is a deliberate attempt to try to enshrine the legal doctrine that “religious freedom” is a legitimate excuse for overt discrimination into US law. And I am seriously doubtful that this “Colorado web designer” is financing this appeal up to the SCOTUS level all on her own. And unfortunately, we seem to have a High Court which is disgracefully only too eager to reshape the parameters of “religious freedom” - NOT, IMHO, for the better.

I think I saw this coming a couple of years ago: it got lost in the ballyhoo over some more-controversial decision the same day (Trump impeachment docs or something): but the commentators at SCOTUSblog sounded the alarm. It was a fairly obscure case: the Court struck down a (?)Montana law barring an estate-tax deduction for contributions to specifically-religious educational institutions (the law had allowed it for bequests to secular schools). Minor at the time, but several of their contributors noted that this sort of expansive interpretation of “religious discrimination” could easily be applied as a precedent to basically disallow any separation of religious and secular in public policy. Of course, several comments noted that this might be somewhat of an alarmist view….. *Ahem*…..

Changes in viral load and CD4+ T cell decline are expected signals of HIV evolution. By examining data from well-characterized European cohorts, Wymant et al. report an exceptionally virulent subtype of HIV that has been circulating in the Netherlands for several years (see the Perspective by Wertheim). More than one hundred individuals infected with a characteristic subtype B lineage of HIV-1 were found who experienced double the rate of CD4+ cell count declines than expected. By the time they were diagnosed, these individuals were vulnerable to developing AIDS within 2 to 3 years. This virus lineage, which has apparently arisen de novo since around the millennium, shows extensive change across the genome affecting almost 300 amino acids, which makes it hard to discern the mechanism for elevated virulence. —CA

The achievements of George Washington Carver, the 19th century scientist credited with hundreds of inventions, including 300 uses for peanuts, have landed him in American history textbooks.

But many other agricultural practices, innovations and foods that traveled with enslaved people from West Africa — or were developed by their descendants — remain unsung, despite having revolutionized the way we eat, farm and garden.

Among the medicinal and food staples introduced by the African diaspora were sorghum, millet, African rice, yams, black-eyed peas, watermelon, eggplant, okra, sesame and kola nut, whose extract was a main ingredient in the original Coca-Cola recipe.

Whether captives smuggled seeds and plants from aboard slave ships or captains purchased them in Africa for planting in America, key components of the West African diet also journeyed along the Middle Passage across the Atlantic.

After long days spent working on the plantation’s fields, many enslaved people grew their own gardens to supplement their meager rations.

“The plantation owners could then force them to show them how to grow those foods,” said Judith Carney, a professor of geography at UCLA and co-author of “In the Shadow of Slavery: Africa’s Botanical Legacy in the Atlantic World” (University of California Press, 2011).

That being said, Putin is apparently at near Stalin levels of paranoia and isn’t necessarily acting rationally.

He’s not paranoid or irrational; he knows that we are not going to engage in a direct military conflict with him — the danger to the world survival is too great. He is calculating and rational and knows that extending Russian power and control is more pleasing to his citizenry than providing them with an improved standard of living. This is the legacy he plans to leave his nation, an autocratic Russia in ascendancy in the world, while the west that he detests because he believes us weak and susceptible to propaganda (and his assist in the election of Trump shows how right he was) and our efforts at a multicultural nation will fail (again thanks to his assists to white supremacists). Over the recent years we have repeatedly been warned that autocracy was rising through the world — and Putin is exploiting that trend.

Because there’s whole jurisdictions where being black isn’t any kind of a handicap, it’s actually an asset. There’s towns, and parts of towns, where nobody objects at all to her being black. And somebody else, in fact a chap called Guy Stevens who was quite instrumental in Gary [Brooker, the singer and pianist] and myself getting together in the first place, said, ‘Oh, you must call the group Procol Harum’. The second he moves into a NATO nation all bets are off. Until then we give material support to whoever is opposing him, preferably very publicly. We apply the strictest sanctions possible, unfortunately Russia can probably find a buyer for all the oil they can produce in China.

There is a reason the cold war was cold and not hot and that reason hasn’t changed. The one thing this guarantees is that no country that has nukes will ever voluntarily surrender them again.

Yeah, especially if those neighboring NATO countries that border Ukraine help supply them with weapons/materiel and insurgent training. That could potentially keep Russia tied down for quite some time.

Shirley Chisholm did say that of all the barriers placed in her way, all the obstacles she had to overcome to achieve what she did… it was FAR more often over gender than ethnicity.

Because there’s whole jurisdictions where being black isn’t any kind of a handicap, it’s actually an asset. There’s towns, and parts of towns, where nobody objects at all to her being black. But there’s nowhere, literally nowhere, that being an ambitious female doesn’t upset SOMEBODY who’ll then try to stop her.

Yeah, I think about that quote every time a black woman bewails racism (which is also real, of course).

Once you get into a shooting war between nuclear powers you are risking a nuclear exchange even if it is unlikely. Fog of war and all.

Prior conflicts have generally been proxy wars. US and Russia/Soviet Union engaging in conflicts via third parties, whether it was in the Middle East. Where the conflict threatens to go directly between nuclear powers, it can get dangerously out of control faster than those involved would ever be willing to admit. That’s why Pakistan/India/China conflicts are so dangerous, because there’s no proxies - these three nuclear powers have threatened the others for years, and skirmishes over the Line of Control for instance could bloom into a full on nuclear exchange unless sane heads prevail (and that’s not a given).

Charges need to be filed. You can’t just let someone this stupid go when they’ve done this much foreseeable damage. You don’t have in-dorm rocket fuel experiments. That’s not a thing.

As of Tuesday morning, the resident is not expected to face charges, according to police, but once the investigation is closed, it will be overviewed by the prosecutor to determine if charges will be filed.

If you’re thinking New World, think more complexly. The Aztecs colonized the hell out of the Toltecs/Mayans, who sat on the Olmecs, Mixtecs and all the little tecs ad infitum.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory would like a word.

Malina and five associates (including Jack Parsons[5] and Hsue-Shen Tsien) became known at Caltech as the “Suicide Squad” because of their dangerous experiments (and failures) when testing rocket motor designs.

Malina’s group was forced to move their operations away from the main Caltech campus into the more remote Arroyo Seco. This site and the research Malina was conducting would later become the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).[1] Malina served as the second Director of JPL.[6]
