Good evening lizards. I am finished cleaning up the plumbing disaster upstairs(the rest is in the garage, another project to do once it dries out down there), got a decent dinner on the table(pork roast with potatoes, carrots and a bit of celery and a salad with avocado). Sure we can - we just say we still consider it legally binding, regardless of Russia’s actions and that Russia is acting in violation of international law as a rogue state.
That being said, devastating economic sanctions and weapons/material/insurgency training support to Ukraine are first and foremost.
The thing about living in representative democracies that abide by international agreements and laws is that the process is always more complicated than simply “I declare war.”
And Vlad’s become very experienced over the years in playing the system, generally by fomenting “rebellions” in neighboring states and then using those as pretext to “recognize” the regions in rebellion as sovereign states for the purpose of rolling in troops to “protect” them. Yeah, what he’s doing is blatantly illegal and it’s a mockery of international agreements, but possession is nine-tenths of the law and nobody (so far) has been willing to go to war with Russia to dispute his claims.

The million dollar question is whether or not Germany will follow through.

Indeed, but like her sister ship the IJN Musashi, they were taken out with carrier-based air power. The last of her class, the IJN Shinano, was converted to a carrier and sunk by four torpedoes from the USS Archerfish.
The Yamato-class were beautiful ships, but in the era of air power, sitting ducks.

Technically we did at the Battle off Samar, which really showed the poor level of leadership by that point in the war since Kurita totally misread the fierce resistance of a few escort carriers and destroyers as having run into Halsey’s main fleet and chose to retreat.
But really, Yamato and Musashi were to the Imperial Navy much like Bismarck and Tirpitz were to the Kriegsmarine: show pieces. The latter were treated as commerce raiders because the Reich simply lacked the numbers to go toe-to-toe with the Royal Navy, while the former were built for a decisive battle that never came.

He does not recognize Ukraine’s right to exist, could really be argued that he doesn’t recognize any state carved out of the former SSSR as being a legitimate one (save those under Moscow’s thumb), and so views the land they sit upon as Russian land that he can do with as he likes.
There’s no diplomatic solution here other than Putin undoing everything he did yesterday by withdrawing the recognition of these “republics” and moving his troops out of Ukraine’s borders. Anything less than that is a defacto admission that Putin’s position is valid. And if the West does that, then Eastern Europe is going to fucking freak out. It also means that Taiwan is gonna start sweating bullets because Beijing is going to see that as a green light to start prepping an invasion force.

That’s why it is only “less-than-bad” news and not good news…
Czech TV is now reporting that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov appears to be contradicting the Deputy Foreign Minister and has stated that, “The Russian Federation recognizes the DPR and LPR within the borders in which they proclaimed themselves.”
I imagine we’ll get some clarification on this in the next few hours. Could also be that Russia’s Foreign Ministry wants to do one thing and the Kremlin has different ideas and they haven’t coordinated their talking points yet.

I boil 2.5 quarts of water with 4 chicken thighs for a few minutes in order to skim the top, then put in 150 grams of short grain rice. Some salt. Stir often while it is coming to a simmer, then stir every 15 min. Simmer for 90 min to 2 hours. You have a fine porridge. At the end I add 4 fermented duck eggs, quartered. They taste good in the congee. Can flavor with some ginger.

A coworker of mine had a near-fatal stroke the second week of January. She has insurance coverage through our employer but obviously her hospitalization and recovery have resulted in a lot of bills - not least of all because this all happened right after the New Year and she was nowhere close to meeting her deductible.
One of the specialists she has been going to is threatening to stop seeing her any longer unless she pays up and I regularly see FB posts from her and her friends begging people to donate to her GFM to try to get the spiraling bills under control.
This was a woman who, before the stroke, was relatively healthy and had what would be considered “decent” health coverage from her employer.

Right now, NATO’s options for getting involved are largely limited to economic reprisals against Russia and materiel support to Ukraine. The treaties and agreements that we could cite as obligations to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and its borders are the ones we’re also saying Moscow just ripped up and shat all over. It’s a dead letter as far as anything promised to Russia is concerned.
That the other signers might wish to uphold their promised commitments to Ukraine and the Baltic countries is something they can consider following through with. Much as outside of the USA (who tore up an agreement with Iran about nuclear capability development under Trump) the other countries tried to continue to the agreed protocols.

About the same as in the 1950s when the PRC took Tibet. When the Nationalist Party formed Taiwan was firmly under the control of Japan. Many of the Chinese on the island weren’t particularly thrilled with the Nationalists when they retained power from Japan after WWII. There was a massive protest that led to a massacre by GMD/KMT of thousands of Taiwanese on and after 2/28/1947. The PRC has never had any governing role there.
Up to the late 1500s early 1600s it was no more than a rough frontier outpost for a handful of Chinese who weathered attacks by aborigines. The Portuguese came for awhile, then the Dutch built up forts in the south and tried to recruit Chinese farmers to come occupy. When the Dutch left it became a part of Qing-China’s territory. But, again, the Qing lost it to Japan in the Shimonoseki Treaty following the first Sino-Japanese war that concluded in 1895.

There was an interesting set of incidents in the 1870s when a crew of Ryukyuan fishermen ended up marooned on Taiwan and were massacred by an Aboriginal tribe. Under advice from an American who had experience in subduing natives, the Japanese set up a punitive expedition based on the idea that the Ryukyuans were Japanese subjects, since the Japanese had recently kidnapped the Ryukyu king and annexed the islands. Before the government could halt the expedition, it set out. In the aftermath of meting out “justice” for the Ryukyuans, the Japanese were confronted by the Qing. But the Japanese could not get the Qing to clarify what exactly their authority was over the native people of that part of the island. Ultimately, it would be a couple more years before Japan forced Korea to sign the Kanghwa Treaty that opened Korea up to some Japanese trade and residence, which was the beginning (well, except for Ryukyus and Hokkaido) of their imperialistic endeavors.

TL;DR: Putin and the oligarchs are most afraid of being removed from power, not of NATO military action. He has long been a public proponent of returning to pre-1917 Imperial Russia borders, including Finland and many other countries now considered independent. He sees these countries as threats to his worst fear, because strong European democracies united under the European Union offer a safe haven for his critics and a model for Russians to envy.

To me, though, it seems more like this is a deliberate attempt to try to enshrine the legal doctrine that “religious freedom” is a legitimate excuse for overt discrimination into US law. And I am seriously doubtful that this “Colorado web designer” is financing this appeal up to the SCOTUS level all on her own. And unfortunately, we seem to have a High Court which is disgracefully only too eager to reshape the parameters of “religious freedom” - NOT, IMHO, for the better.

Minor at the time, but several of their contributors noted that this sort of expansive interpretation of “religious discrimination” could easily be applied as a precedent to basically disallow any separation of religious and secular in public policy. Of course, several comments noted that this might be somewhat of an alarmist view….. *Ahem*…..

That being said, Putin is apparently at near Stalin levels of paranoia and isn’t necessarily acting rationally.

Prior conflicts have generally been proxy wars. US and Russia/Soviet Union engaging in conflicts via third parties, whether it was in the Middle East. Where the conflict threatens to go directly between nuclear powers, it can get dangerously out of control faster than those involved would ever be willing to admit. That’s why Pakistan/India/China conflicts are so dangerous, because there’s no proxies - these three nuclear powers have threatened the others for years, and skirmishes over the Line of Control for instance could bloom into a full on nuclear exchange unless sane heads prevail (and that’s not a given).

Man, I’m so old that I remember when all the Conservative Christian Reagan-Bush worshippers used to call me a Communist and tell me to move to Russia for daring to question our support for repressive right wing authoritarian regimes and not rushing to seek employment at Norfolk Naval Shipyard or the then-named Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock like practically every other male in my extended family.
