Filming the leaking BOP during the Top Kill procedure and Junk Shot is messy business with all that nasty oil and mud spewing out. The underwater Spill Cam robot slowly surfaces to have its lens wiped.
First is a clip of the baby leaks above the BOP, then short time-lapse clips of the rise through a mile a sea water to the surface. There we see at least one drill ship and other vessels. As the robot is docked in its hanger, into internet fame Red Jack Guy walks past the camera.

Had a fantastic day out on The Lake in Central Park today with ice-ski.
It's a really beautiful environment to go boating in. I was amazed by how many turtles there are in the water. Anyone visiting Manhattan this summer needs to check it out - definitely one of the NY highlights.
PS : Overheard right now in New York: "Go back to Jersey!" Must be friday night again ;-)
Night all from ice-ski and me.

This is becoming beyond horrible, and I'm progressively losing hope that it can be remedied in anything like the near future. My heart and my prayers go out to everything living thing down there.

"The President scares me. He’s been acting like, you know, a Vatican observer here. When is he going to actually do something? And I worry– I know that he doesn’t want to take ownership of it, I know the politics, because the minute he says ‘I’m in charge’ then he’s blamed. But somebody is going to have to take charge."

They are risking everything by this 'go along with BP' strategy they have that seems like, lackadaisical on this, and Doug is right, they seem like they're inconvenienced by this, this is some giant thing getting in their way and somehow or another, if you let BP handle it, it'll all go away. It's not going away. It's growing out there. It is a disaster of the first magnitude, and they've got to go to Plan B."

It's not about loose cannons. Republicans are no longer in control of their message. Their political positions are set by the prevailing memes of the media cult their base now follows. Opposition to the Democrats does not stem from the opposition party; rather, the opposition party is nothing more than the political proxies for these memes.

The GOP can't allow extremists to become its public face. The party's history in promoting civil rights is an honorable one, from the time of its founding as the anti-slavery party to the passage of the very civil-rights law Paul criticized. If not for Republicans, there'd be no Civil Rights Act of 1964. A larger percentage of Republicans than Democrats, 82 percent to 66 percent, supported the bill in the key Senate vote.
But I ain't weighing in on the "14th Amendment Taker Advantage Of'ers" though. I brought some hate upon my fat ass for it.

re: #71 sattv4u2
Here we go again. "The Republicans are rudderless,,, they don’t have a leader,,, they're doomed"
Let me ask you something
June 1997, 6 months after Clinton slaughtered Dole, name me one person (besides Carl Rover, MAYBE) that would have told you for certainty that George Bush would be the leader of the Repubs and be elected in 2000
June 2001, after Bush beat Gore, tell me one person who would have told you John Kerry would have been the 'rudder" of the Dems come 2004
June 2005, after Bush beat Kerry, tell me one person who would have told you that BHO would be the "leader" of the Dems come 2008!
I could go back even further. The "losers" in the race for the White House are ALWAYS "rudderless and leaderless" for at LEAST 2 1/2 years after that election. ALWAYS
I don't really have much of an opinion about them being rudderless or leaderless. My point is that they are no longer a political party because they have lost control of their message. And unless you think the media cult that has taken their followers will voluntarily give them back, they will not regain control of that message.

Thanks ... Here's my take on the immigration issue. It's a two pronged approach.
1. Everyone who is here the day my new law passes and is not a criminal will not be deported. The final status is "TBD," but deportation will not be an option.
2. Seal the border by all means necessary so there is no new influx. Those who are here can help some family members immigrate to the US, but future "illegal entry" will not be tolerated.
Doing this is the only humane and reasonable approach that I have heard.

Renaissance-Man, If you're here...here is the difference between a private organization and a privately traded corporation:
Court definition of "private club"
[Link: law.jrank.org...]Privately traded Corporation:
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
So you think that there are no hospitals that are not government owned and that are not publicly traded? Interesting.
HCA, Manor Care, Vanguard Health, and Ardent Health Services are all privately owned, non-publicly traded healthcare companies. Between them they own and operate 250+ hospitals in the US. There are of course many more, but those are just the largest ones I could find. And, of course, virtually every private medical practice is also not government owned and not publicly traded.
This is, of course, merely tangential to the overall point of whether a private business should be allowed to deny service based on race or gender. But I'm glad to have helped with your education.

Boston is great, except for the messed up pattern of streets and the lunatic drivers. Boston is the easiest place in the world to get lost. Went to my first Celtics game in 1966 (vs St Louis Hawks). Went to first Sox game in '65. Boston sports are the best. In my "career" as a fan ...
8 Celtics Championships
2 Stanley Cups (when I cared in 1970 and '72)
3 Patriots Super Bowl Wins ...
2 Red Sox World Series Wins
2003 Syracuse NCAA Hoop Champion (my alma mater)

I've posted the video from Flex Your Rights on here before, well some teachers showed the video to their students and got suspended:
[Link: hamptonroads.com...]
Two Norfolk teachers put on leave over material about police
Two Norview High School teachers were placed on paid administrative leave this week after a parent complained that they distributed classroom materials that gave advice on how to deal with police if stopped. The materials - a one-page handout and a video distributed and aired in a 12th-grade government class - are sponsored by two organizations, one a nonprofit that supports legalization of marijuana and one that calls itself a "decentralized anarchist collective."
The last paragraph of the flier, titled "When Dealing with Police" states, "Remember You have legal rights, but many police will not respect your rights. Be careful - Be Street Smart."
Schools spokeswoman Elizabeth Thiel Mather said division leaders are investigating the incident over concerns that the materials were unauthorized.
The parent, who asked not to be named out of fear that her daughter could be ostracized or get a lower class grade, told The Pilot that she contacted the division and police after her daughter described the leaflet and video.
What kind of fucked up parent contacts the police because their kids were shown a video of their rights when dealing with cops? Maybe CPS should take a look in her house and lets see how she deals with them.

Nice try. The question was the ability of a hospital to discriminate on the patients it accepts not who they allow to buy their stock. Don't play stupid word games because happened to be wrong.
Now you're just making things up. You said:
Could someone, anyone, point out where in this country there is a truly "private" hospital? There is no such animal.
I might add that you said that in response to:
Do you believe it would be within the right of a business owner to:
1. Deny blacks (or any other minority) access to a private ambulance?
2. Deny blacks (or any other minority) access to emergency medical treatment in a private medical clinic?
3. Deny blacks (or any other minority) access to private medical treatment?
In other words, Gus asked a series of specific questions, none of which you answered, but instead you chose to respond by denying that private hospitals existed. You were then shown that private hospitals do exist. You insisted they did not. Now you've been shown again that they do exist. And now you spin some rubbish that 'the question' isn't about who they allow to buy their stock. And despite having just been shown to be wrong multiple times over, your response is to clap your internet hands over your ears and insist otherwise.
I'd love to take the libertarian philosophy and positions seriously, but every time there's any sort of actual debate, every single libertarian defender manages to come off as so incredibly intellectually lightweight. Come on, man. This is weaksauce.

He get to Arizona and his car starts to spry smoke and oil everywhere. The penguin says "Okay" and waddles off to find a restaurant. It's summertime and very hot and as he waddles down the street he notices an ice cream parlor. BTW, you have yet to even try to mention one "private hospital". Just to clear up any further confusion on your part I'll rephrase, can you name for me one hospital in this country that controls who has access to services they provide based on an exclusive membership list?

Back when I was in Boston I won a bid to install the Closed Circuit TV system into the "new" private suites in the old Boston Garden. One day when we were working the the C's were practicing. It was Ainges rookie year. We took a break while they scrimmaged and went down and watched. Ainge and Bird are on the same side. Ainge inbounds the ball to Bird under the basket. Bird dribbles the length of the court into one corner, dribbles around the 3 piont arc all the way over to the other corner, shoots a 3 and misses, turns to Ainge and yells "Fuckin Danny, give me a better pass next time and I'll make that shot"

As well they should!
Sorry, FBV, I love ya, but you're on your own, here!
I did read upthread, and saw your comment #19:
re: #19 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
"The President scares me. He’s been acting like, you know, a Vatican observer here. When is he going to actually do something? And I worry– I know that he doesn’t want to take ownership of it, I know the politics, because the minute he says ‘I’m in charge’ then he’s blamed. But somebody is going to have to take charge."
-Chris Matthews"I'm as good a Democrat as most people, and I think this administration has done some good things.
-James Carville
I'm sorry if I seem to harp excessively on this oil spill, I'm trying to restrain myself, but according to what the Roi said, Carville here is spot on about the administration "going along with BP", though honestly, I don't know that they have a choice, the administration has no drilling experience and must, like the rest of us, rely on what BP is telling us.
It's the Roi's opinion (not a proven fact, but his opinion) that BP knew full well this top kill procedure wasn't going to work, because as long as mud is flowing out through the leaking areas, there is no way they can get enough pressure in there to push the oil into place. In other words, he thinks (his OPINION again) that BP is lying to everybody, trying to put their best face forward.
On this "moratorium" - he said the rig he's on has been unable for 3 days to contact MMS, and so they are simply proceeding forward with this job. Nobody's in the office to answer questions, and you'd think, with an order like this moratorium, somebody would be there to give people direction. I guess the rig at this point figures it's better to ask forgiveness later, and all that. What will happen to us after this job is done is anybody's guess, but for now, they're moving along.
What I'm getting from this is that the gov't agencies dealing with this are in a state of mass confusion right now, and that may be the reason why Carville and Matthews perceive that no one's in charge.

Oh, I agree.
Of course they can't, that equipment is very costly to operate and maintain.
But the bottom line - there really does seem to be mass chaos in the agencies that should be dealing with this, right now. As much as BP needs to get their act together, so do the government agencies.

I just can't believe there wasn't a better plan. There should have been a very well thought-out contingency plan for anything that could go wrong. Should have been tests, and ways to verify that there was a solid plan in case something goes wrong.

Gus was surprised earlier when R. Paul voted to overturn the DADT. I'm a little late but here is his reasoning:
[Link: voices.washingtonpost.com...]
So why did Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), after supporting "don't ask, don't tell" since its introduction in 1993, vote to begin the process to repeal it?"I have received several calls and visits from constituents who, in spite of the heavy investment in their training, have been forced out of the military simply because they were discovered to be homosexual," Paul said Friday. "To me, this seems like an awful waste. Personal behavior that is disruptive should be subject to military discipline regardless of whether the individual is heterosexual or homosexual. But to discharge an otherwise well-trained, professional, and highly skilled member of the military for these reasons is unfortunate and makes no financial sense."
Paul's vote was the lone surprise among the five Republicans who bucked their party to vote for the amendment sponsored by Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Penn.).
Credit where credit is due and all....

And that's what I can't stand. Before digging started, engineers should have been sitting around a table saying, "ok, what are we going to do if X happens?" Make a plan, prove it out, do some testing to verify it. You know, science. I understand they can't do a full-on fire drill, but you can do simulations. I don't feel like any contingencies were thought through.

Yeah. It's past time for DADT to die a dishonorable death.
I think it served as a useful bridge from a full-on prohibition to a full-on permission to serve. Gradual change is often the only way to proceed in social and societal matters, especially on one that had been so deeply felt at the time. DADT allowed people to at least get used to the idea of homosexuals serving honorably, if covertly, in the forces, in preparation for their eventual open service.

re: #133 RogueOne
That's exactly what I said, does that sound like I'm talking about a privately traded corporation or a private hospital, as in private club? I'm pretty sure gus was talking about access to services not buying stock. You keep making the same weak symantic argument when we both know the context of the conversation. "Weak sauce" is right.
BTW, you have yet to even try to mention one "private hospital". Just to clear up any further confusion on your part I'll rephrase, can you name for me one hospital in this country that controls who has access to services they provide based on an exclusive membership list?
It is patently obvious that you haven't the faintest idea what the context of the conversation is, semantics or otherwise.
Yes, Gus was talking about access to services. You will note that he does not use the word 'hospital' in any of his questions. Rather, he asks about access to private medical services and clinics. You chose to create the strawman about 'no hospitals that operate as private clubs', apparently because engaging in honest discussion is contrary to libertarian philosophy. So, after creating your own special definition of 'private hospital', you then decided to act like that had answered the question.
Medical service that operates like an exclusive club does exist, by the way. Any private medical practice can of course limit its patients to whatever number they wish, creating an exclusive patient list for all intents and purposes. Some go further and actually create an exclusive patient list - it's called concierge medicine.
Note, however, that your strawman argument about 'hospitals' and 'private clubs' is in fact doubly dishonest, because the argument has never been about whether private clubs have the right or not to limit patronage. Nobody on this board has been arguing that. The argument has always been whether the CRA and similar laws are right to forbid private businesses from discriminating based on race. In other words, whether or not the local diner has the right, as a private business, to put up that 'Whites Only' sign. Your ridiculous non-point about 'there are no local diners that operate as private clubs' is completely unrelated to the question, or the issue.
However, now that you suddenly agree that the question is about access to medical services, let's ask Gus' questions again: Do you believe it would be within the rights of a business owner to:
- Deny blacks (or any other minority) access to emergency services in a private medical clinic?
- Deny blacks (or any other minority) access to private medical treatment?

I did a restaurant job in Texas for a fast food joint. When they set the footers the concrete company, an entirely Mexican/S. American crew of about 20 guys, picked up shovels and started digging. That's part of the reason I'm pro-amnesty. Anyone willing to work that hard needs to be here.

Actually, The East Germans had a big advantage trying to keep people in: they had an intelligence & survellance network that was often aware of people who were planning to leave well in advance and were able to round them up before they got anywhere near the border.
Point is, the gravitational pull of the US economy vs. that of Mexico is so great that it will take quite a solid, well patrolled border to keep people from trying to overcome it.

This will probably get me hammered but I think there's a pretty decent sized chunk of American society that is just lazy. The more civilized we become, the easier life becomes and people forget what it's like to struggle to just survive. Our will becomes weaker and weaker with each passing generation. And houses, as well, even the inside walls are not immune. I've been trying to "paint" my dining room, but before I painted, I had to sand and spackle and re-sand the gaps that have developed over time (very old house), and it's taking me a very long time (I hate sanding, I hate spackling). I did 3 walls one time, and then new gaps developed so I had to re-spackle with this elastic-sort of spackle. It's been a mess.

Good morning Lizards ... It's a good day ... the Celtics won last night and will go to the NBA Finals. And today is my 22nd wedding anniversary. (I did not list those two things in order of importance).
The NY Post gets its share of heat around here, but this article from today's paper is another example of responsible "right of center" opinion that I see in that "tabloid."
[Link: www.nypost.com...]
If anyone disagrees with the sentiments in that piece, feel free to "do what you have to," but please read it before simply saying where it appeared. By the way, that piece appeared in many other papers and web sites.
And the comments are all racist, vitriolic full-throated support of Rand of Pearce.
If that editorial can be found elsewhere, read it elsewhere.

ALWAYS
yes, here we go again indeed.
June 1997 -- most of the Republican establishment would have given you good odds on Bush for 2000.
June 2001 -- okay, you've got me there.
June 2005 -- everybody who saw BHO's 2004 DNC keynote speech. The guy was dragged into the race by massive groundswell, his own personal plans didn't have him running until 2016 or 2020.

Pelosi has a point. But she isn't saying that the Obama administration is without responsibility. The writer of the article in the Washington Examiner is opinionating that she says the Obama administration is blameless. Given the angry tone and skepticism of the last line, one could be forgiven for assuming that the Examiner doesn't care too much for Pelosi or the Democrats, and their indignation that anyone could find fault in the Bush administration is fairly evident.
Still, Pelosi's comment in the context of this article doesn't thrill me.

Yes, but she is stating fact.
“Many of the people appointed in the Bush administration are still burrowed in the agencies that are supposed to oversee the [oil] industry,[this is fact]” Pelosi said when asked if Democrats could have prevented or mitigated the crisis by keeping a closer watch on the industry.[here, they've sewn two different sentences together to make one quote...relationships between Bush admin and industry, and a sentence about whether she's heard complaints about the Obama response]
Added the Speaker, “the cozy relationships between the Bush administration’s agency leadership and the industry is clear…I’ve heard no complaints from my members about the way the president has handled it,” Pelosi stated.
Creative quoting, CCA...I think looking up the entire interview might be worth your while...but being pissed about Bush being dragged into this is understandable...I'm pissed that people have been calling this "Obama's Katrina" since the Deep Horizon started sinking.

re: #356 darthstar
Ha!
Here's the thing.
In one place, she talks about the Bush administration's agency leadership being cozy with industry. That leadership surely has been replaced by the Obama administration by now.
In another sentence, she talks about people being "burrowed" in the agency. That's sounds like worker-bees hired during the Bush years, not the agency leadership.
And I'm still pissed off that people are still calling Katrina "Bush's Katrina".

Of course not, and they have been changed.
Now, worker-bee sorts hired during the Bush years may have some sort of civil service protection, and can't be replaced. And when she talks of people being "burrowed" in the agency - that's not agency leadership, they aren't "burrowed in", they're right out front.

It's not that they can't be changed, but where does a person start? There are hundreds of jobs that, as reine pointed out, have civil service protection - and before leaving office the bush admin appointed a lot of industry people to positions of influence in various areas. The Obama administration has been focused on things like the economy (stopping another depression), health care reform, fixing our image abroad, etc...they haven't exactly been going through the duct work looking for bush appointees to fire and replace, so yes, a lot of people are still there.

The Times quoted a security source, who said, "HIzbullah is allowed to operate this site freely. They often move the arms in bad weather when Israeli satellites are unable to track them." The weapons come from Syria itself or are sent from Iran by air or sea.
This is the first proof of Hizbullah guerillas encamping on Syrian soil, leading to fears that if there is another clash between Israel and Hizbullah, Syria could immediately become involved.
Israel reportedly had wanted to bomb one of the arms transfers but yielded to U.S. pressure to rely on its diplomatic efforts to stop the arms flow. These have been unsuccessful, although John Kerry, the head of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Syrian President Bassar Assad in Damascus in April and discussed Scud missile transfers from Syria to the Hizbullah. Syria denied the transfer, but Western diplomatic sources said that Syria is "flat out lying".

So, these appointment are permanent and can't be changed?
Political appointees, if they decide to stay on permanently (which a fair number do as the administration draws to a close), have preference as civil service spots come available. Even if their qualifications wouldn't otherwise pass muster. So all those Regents University lawyers that Bush put in the DoJ are still there, and we're stuck with them until they hit retirement age.
Appointees by the new administration for leadership spots, if they require senate confirmation -- you'll remember that McConnell's been filibustering everything for a year and a half, even the most routine procedural matters. And the old people can't be fired until their replacements are confirmed. There's still tons of Bush appointees at every agency.

Nope...the spill is BP's fault, and President Obama has been crystal clear about that. Pelosi's attempts to deflect criticism of the Obama administration by pointing out that he didn't recreate the agency overseeing the oil industry in his first year and a half in office, and thus pointing out that most of the people there were in fact placed there by Bush doesn't do much for her image, so responses like DF's are to be expected.
The Washington Examiner is saying that Pelosi blames Bush for the oil spill...the Washington Examiner is about as capable of quoting something Pelosi says in context as Michele Malkin is.

While the oil spill has focused our attention to issues within the way the gov't handles oil companies and drilling and lax oversight (that I have a feeling extends back beyond the Bush administration) in the end BP fucked up and killed 11 people.

Actually, there's been ongoing recruiting and training for quite awhile now.
What I think the Obama administration has NOT done is provide strong oversight of what BP is doing. I think they are relying on what BP is telling them.
See upthread a bit - apparently, BP brought in hordes of workers for Obama's visit, then when Obama left the areas, the workers were packed up and sent home.

re: #384 webevintage
You are probably right.
While the oil spill has focused our attention to issues within the way the gov't handles oil companies and drilling and lax oversight (that I have a feeling extends back beyond the Bush administration) in the end BP fucked up and killed 11 people.
And honestly - if there are problems in those areas, no one would have known about it until an incident like this happened. Really. If things are running smoothly, the tendency is to just keep on keeping on, doing the same old thing, no reason to change things while they're working.

re: #370 sagehen
I remember the trouble that George Patton got into for leaving all those civil servants in place when he was the military governor in occupied Germany, and for the comments he made about it.

Yep, I can imagine it is.
It's why we all have AC's turned down to 65 degrees!
I found that interesting, about the A/C temp setting. Truly different than what I'm accustomed to in the southwest desert. Here, even if outside temp is well over 100 the setting is about 79. Doing a little work in the house? Set it at 77 or 78. But, this is for a single story house. Can't do that for higher construction.

The weapons transfers are not the Lebanese Army, they are to Hezbollah, a terrorist organization. That makes the transfers entirely illegal and of no purpose except to facilitate the killing of Jews.
397 | reine.de.tout Sat, May 29, 2010 9:52:26am |
re: #380 darthstar
OK, that may be true.
I don't like Pelosi, have never liked Pelosi, and I cringe every time I hear and watch her speak, and I do that even without the Washington Examiner telling me I should. I don't know if it's the result of plastic surgery or botox, but she just has the same expression on her face all the time, and does not come across to me as a sincere and honest person. Just my .02.

Yes, but nobody is trying to take blame away from BP...including Pelosi. Obama's been crystal on their responsibility. He's also taking part of the blame due to his position as President of the United States. But that's just one of those differences between him and Bush.
Glad you brought up the sky thing...I was going to say it but thought it would be hyperbole to accuse you of thinking that way, and I know you're using it as hyperbole as well, so if she does say the sky is blue, I suspect you'll simply believe her.

Except the Clinton administration handed the Bush administration a bunch of intelligence and said, "Pay attention...this is important." and the Bush admin ignored it...just as they ignored the August 6 "Obama determined to attack in the United States" memo. From same story, different link:
Satellites Reveals Hizbullah Base in Syria
The Times turned to the Syrian Embassy spokesman in London, Jihad Makdissi, who insisted that all military sites in Syria were exclusive to the Syrian military. "If these military depots really exist it would be for the exclusive use of the Syrian army to defend Syrian soil [from Israel], and it is definitely nobody's business."
IDF Intelligence Officer, Brigadier General Yossi Baidatz, told the Knesset recently that even without the Scud transfers, which he called the 'tip of the iceberg', Hizbullah's arsenal contains rockets of all kinds in numbers that exceed by far their arsenal before the last war with Israel. Weapons transfers from Syria had passed the stage of 'smuggling' and were 'organized and official', he said.
UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006, banned the rearming of Hizbullah, but has been totally ignored by the terrorist group and its allies.

Extremists on both sides want to see the situation resolved by a final smackdown of Israel or the Arabs. Any real resolution will probably be a long, imperfect process, similar in this respect to the NI peace process.
We know what motivates the extremists on the Arab side, but why do so many right wing Americans fetishize the prospect of Israeli violence? For many it's the extremely fucked up beliefs of Christian Zionism, for others it's the need to see the world in simple terms that render one population as saintly 'goodies', another entire population as 100% evil 'baddies', and the need for simple, violent solutions to match.
Fundamentally, wingnuts are a trifle fed up with all the nonsense of dealing with reality intelligently and would rather convince themselves and others that we're in a John Wayne movie.
