A Journey Through Quantum Galaxies: The Case for Axionic Dark Matter

Science • Views: 15,974

It’s possible that our entire galaxy is filled with a reverberating quantum mechanical wave that literally holds the galaxy together—and in fact explains all the dark matter we see across the universe.

Quantum mechanics is our best theory of the fundamental nature of reality, but it’s usually only distinguishable from familiar classical mechanics on the smallest scales. However, there are some fringe cases where its distinct features manifest on scales we can observe—in things like superfluids, or the interiors of collapsed stars. But it’s also possible that our entire galaxy is filled with a reverberating quantum mechanical wave that literally holds the galaxy together—and in fact explains all the dark matter that we see across the universe. And this isn’t even a fringe theory. It’s axionic dark matter.

Meanwhile, Trump’s scandals were greater than the sum total of all other presidential scandals in US history (and it isn’t close), which the US political media busily ignores.

It really would be nice for them to do their fucking jobs*, for once.

(*) I.e., their purported job of being a responsible “4th branch”. We all know their actual job is to prop up Republicans.

“So imagine it was Dire Straits that went to see Zappa in Montreaux instead of Deep Purple. The years don’t exactly work out but I figured it was worth a shot.
Reference track for this one is of course ‘Money for Nothing’, with the out of phase guitar. Another great track to use the new Epiphone Les Paul Classic. I’m very much in love with the sounds I can get out of this guitar”

What a hoot!

I wrote a custom library to handle embedded tweets, but since Twitter shut down our API access (along with everyone else’s), we can no longer use that library. And that means embedded tweets now are using Twitter’s code, which is much larger and more memory-hungry, and mobile phones are especially sensitive to this.

I’m thinking about ways to address this without shutting down Twitter embeds entirely, but this is eventually going to end up that way.

I guess I don’t put it past the Trumpers to do a lot of fake cooperation in order to generate media hits they can they cry foul about. I doubt Rudy will flip, only because he probably can’t help any prosecution since he’s a known liar. Same reason Gaetz got off. If you surround yourself with con artists, they can’t really testify against you without recordings or documents. Was Rudy smart enough to get those? He doesn’t seem all that smart to me, honestly.

They made it sound like Rudy knew he faces time either in a Federal prison or a Georgia prison and he’s trying to get out ahead of it to be on the side of the Feds and to mitigate. But with caveat: ianal.

What he did was nowhere near “premeditated”, manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide (which seems to me to be the appropriate set of charges) are worth at most, if convicted of both and sentences to run consecutively, 19 years. More likely, if convicted of both the sentences would run concurrently. And time off for good behavior.

A voice on the recent tape:
Susan Wiles is the individual listed in Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump as the “PAC Representative” to whom Trump allegedly showed a classified map.

en.wikipedia.org
Susan Summerall Wiles is an American political consultant who currently serves as a senior advisor on Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. Described as “the most powerful Republican you don’t know” by The Hill, Wiles was credited with helping to secure Trump’s victories in Florida in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Born on May 14, 1957, and raised in New Jersey, Susan Summerall was one of the three children of Pat Summerall, who played for the National Football League (NFL) and later became a sportscaster.

The tail cone remained relatively intact. My guess is that the initial implosion fragmented the bodies, then shoved at least some of the pieces into the tailcone, with others being snagged on various projections inside the hull. This is a very different kind of accident than a jet engine ingestion but the results are probably about the same.

Top Trump campaign aide identified as key individual in classified docs indictment

One of the top advisers on Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign is among the individuals identified but not named by special counsel Jack Smith in his indictment against the former president for allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and obstructing the government’s efforts to retrieve them, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.

Susie Wiles, one of Trump’s most trusted advisers leading his second reelection effort, is the individual singled out in Smith’s indictment as the “PAC Representative” who Trump is alleged to have shown a classified map to in August or September of 2021, sources said.

Trump, in the indictment, is alleged to have shown the classified map of an unidentified country to Wiles while discussing a military operation that Trump said “was not going well,” while adding that he “should not be showing the map” to her and “not to get too close.”

“So if you don’t get the nomination, you won’t support President Biden?” Vargas asked.
“I don’t know what I’ll do,” Kennedy said. “Let’s see what happens in this campaign. Let’s see what - if people are living up to democratic values and having debates and having discussions and, you know, talking to each other, but I’m not going to bite.”

University of Waterloo (Ontario) Imprint, June 28, 2023. American conservative crazy is still spilling over the border into Canada.

On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m., a stabbing incident occurred toward the end of PHIL 202: Gender Issues in Hagey Hall. According to the Waterloo Regional Police Services three individuals were sent to hospital and the suspect was apprehended.

The university posted on Twitter that there was no further risk about thirty minutes after the incident.

Jinming Li, an arts and business student in the class, was an eyewitness to the event. According to Li, a man of about 20-30 years of age entered the class and asked the professor what the class was about. The man closed the door, pulled two knives out of his backpack and proceeded to attack the professor. Students ran to the back of the class to exit out of the one class entrance. “It feels [shocking],” Li said. “If I ranked the safe[ty] of the university, maybe I’d give them… maybe 3, 3.5 [out of 5], because everyone can come in our university, and we don’t have security right? … they can come in our buildings.”

Stabbing at Hagey Hall

It’s sad to think “the only good thing out of this is he didn’t have a gun.” The professor and students went to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

As a Catholic growing up in Southern Baptist territory, it was constantly explained to me why a Catholic was not a Christian. Simply, a Christian had a direct, personal relationship with Christ. A Catholic required an intermediary - the Church - to connect with God.

In the 70s, the Christian evangelicals realized it would be politically positive to bring the conservative Catholic leadership into the fold. So Catholics became “Christians” for that purpose. But as soon as that purpose is no longer needed, the Catholics will be jettisoned.

Yeah, that was part of the personal connection with Christ. An infant cannot make the conscious choice to take Christ into their soul, as an adult baptism can (And adult baptism was how John the Baptist originally did this). But, as my Catholic mother always told me, Confirmation meant she was no longer responsible for my soul and the pressure was off ;-)

And yes, before somebody points it out to me, I’m well aware that there are many places in red states where internet access is as a premium and dirt-poor folks have little access to anything other than the local library. The Coptic Church claims direct descent from the Apostle Mark. However, the actual Coptic Church came about from a schism from the Eastern Orthodox Church in 451 CE.

The Syriac Orthodox Church broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in 451 CE, the Marionite Church broke away in 685 CE, and the Syriac Catholic Church broke away from the Syriac Orthodox Church in 1781 CE.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in 330 CE.

It’s public libraries and schools who are the targets today, but ultimately the goal is all forms of access to literature found “offensive” to these theocrats. Just because they’re not going after private book sellers today doesn’t mean they’re in the clear, it just means they’re going after the low-hanging fruit first, those whose funding they can grab or whose jobs they can end under the flimsiest of excuses.

There have always been rightwing racist crazies in Canada. Until recently, it was possible to shove them under the carpet while wagging fingers at the United States for its racist crazies.

Except now, after the “trucker” “protests” and Western provincial politics (like open racism and bigotry and anti-vax loopiness) it’s gotten obvious that there is indeed a problem here that needs to be addressed.

Who was that coked-up crazy mayor of Toronto? Like a cross between Boris Johnson and Don Jr.

The Swiss GDP is smaller than the Dutch one, and because of all the critical bilateral agreements between the EU and Switzerland, the rest of Europe could really squeeze Switzerland’s gonads if they wanted to.

I don’t think the political will is there, though, especially with Germany having the same mercantilist worldview.

Switzerland is probably sitting on a lot of nasty secrets that it is happy to keep quiet about in exchange for neutrality

Oh yes, the Ford brothers. Rob Ford was the mayor of Toronto, a rightwing asshole elected by suburban voters who were trying to stick it to the browns and the queers downtown (sounds familiar). Big coke habit, rehab, got sidelined and then lost, died of cancer.

His brother, Doug Ford, is unfortunately currently the premier of Ontario, another Tory elected by essentially the same dynamics on a provincial scale (boo Toronto and Ottawa). He is busy underfunding the health care system and the educational systems like a good little Tory, and has the usual patronage scandals.

Catholic is not “a real Christian”: Protestants.

Even in the press you will frequently see articles referring to “Christians and Catholics.”

Protestants believe Catholics are Christians. After all, we’re all modified Catholics. Southern Baptists believe Catholics are Christians. I know this because the southern Baptist association college I used to teach at had a Catholic as dean of arts and sciences. They also had a couple of Pentecostals who were colleagues of mine. What they did NOT have was Mormons because the Mormons are a fucking cult.

16 bodies pulled from Chicago waterways since 2022.

Chicago residents are on edge as authorities investigate the possibility of a serial killer after several bodies were found in the city’s waterways. The first body was discovered in the Chicago River on April 4, 2021, and since then, at least three more bodies have been found in various waterways around the city.

The victims, all of whom were found in or near the water, include a man in his 40s, a woman in her 30s, a young woman in her 20s, and a 21-year-old man from Poland. The causes of death for the victims have not yet been determined, but authorities are treating the cases as suspicious.

A friend who is Protestant (not Evangelical) and a Democrat does not consider Catholics or Mormons to be Christian; to her they belong to religions (just like Jews, Hindus, and Muslims) that are not a subset of Christianity. She’s not a theocrat and it doesn’t trouble her that they worship God differently —nor is she bothered by atheists.

This attitude is consistent amongst a huge swath of Protestants. I grew up in a fundamentalist church and every time we drove past a nearby Catholic Church I was programmed to think “those people are not real Christians” and “they worship statues and Mary.”

In any case, my programming also included me trying to convert the Jewish family who lived across the street, evangelizing to neighborhood kids and praying to Jesus to come down, start the End-Times and take revenge on those who were against us.

At age 12 or so I started questioning the whole thing and at age 14 started my official process of extricating myself from what I consider to be a very large cult. It took many years to be able to consider my self “free.”.

A man who oversaw food service for New York City schools was convicted Wednesday in a bribery case that picked apart how chicken tenders riddled with bone and bits of metal were served for months in the nation’s biggest public school system.

Former city Department of Education official Eric Goldstein and three men who founded a school food vendor — Blaine Iler, Michael Turley and Brian Twomey — were found guilty of bribery, conspiracy and other charges after a monthlong trial.

It delved into school menus, from yogurt parfait to ravioli. And the trial gave jurors a stomach-churning look at what some students and school staffers encountered when a brand called Chickentopia turned up on their plates in 2016 and 2017.

Teens have turned a new McDonalds drink into the latest bizarre TikTok trend as they film themselves pretending to die or suffer other gruesome fates after downing the bright purple shake.

The limited-edition Grimace shake, reintroduced by the restaurant chain as a tribute to a long-forgotten and frankly disturbing mascot, has inspired a wave of memes and videos that has even forced the fast food giant itself to join in.

Grimace first appeared in the 1970s as part of a campaign designed for young children, he was originally introduced as a villain who stole people’s shakes, but quickly morphed into a cheerful character.

People around the world are observing Eid al-Adha, one of the most important Islamic festivals in the Muslim calendar.

Meaning the “feast of the sacrifice”, Eid al-Adha commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son on God’s orders and is marked by special prayers and feasts. This year, it begins on 28 June.

The festival coincides with the end of the Hajj - the annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Below is a selection of images showing people marking the festival around the world.

I didn’t realize it was poorly taken care of. Didn’t meet its reserve price.

Princess Leia’s dress from the original Star Wars movie fetched a highest bid of £770,000 at auction today after it had spent decades unwanted and dumped in a London attic - ripped, blood-stained and with food and wine spilled on it.

But after the top bid fell short of the seller’s minimum sale price it went unsold and it is now believed the highest bidder and seller will try and negotiate an agreement privately.

Archaeologists Uncover a Fresco in Pompeii with a Cheesy Pizza-Like Dish Served on a Silver Platter
thisiscolossal.com

Pompeiians—they’re just like us! Hungry for pizza.

Earlier this year, archaeologists excavating a block of houses in Regio IX of the Vesuvian city uncovered a fresco that shows a round, doughy dish resembling the modern favorite. Researchers were quick to point out that pizza, as we know it today, hadn’t been invented when the 2,000-year-old painting was created, although the ancient civilization did enjoy foccacia, a cousin of the tomato and cheese-covered pie.

This dish appears topped with pomegranate, spices, and a cheesy pesto known as moretum. Served on a silver platter accompanied by dried fruit, yellow strawberries, and a chalice filled with wine, the focaccia likely represents a “gift of hospitality,” according to the Archeological Park of Pompeii. These offerings to guests emerged from the Hellenistic period and the Greek practice of Xenia, which also describes the genre of paintings depicting this tradition.

Approximately 300 frescoes of ancient food have been found around Pompeii, although this still life is particularly well executed. While the work offers insight into what the buried civilization ate, director Gabriel Zuchtriegel says it also has implications for how we understand the evolution of food and wealth, sharing:

I think Congressman Asshole’s remarks need a bit of translation: AFAICT, what he really means is:

“Joe Biden, on day one, has changed our energy policy so as not to absolutely prioritize, favor, and benefit the corporate fossil-fuel interests that lucratively pay us* off to protect their gravy-train.”

Including, probably, some companies in Kentucky - whose groundbreaking ceremonies Comer is more than likely to attend despite his having probably voted against any/every Administration initiative which led to them.

They’re all cults. Most Christians don’t like Christian Mormons because they worship a different version of Jesus.

Christians could do what they did in the past with other Christian cults (Marcionites, Ebionites, Gnostics, that is, genocide) but secular law has restrained the worst impulses of Christians to kill everyone not exactly like them.

Unfortunately, our bought-and-paid for Supreme Court is working diligently to bring back the fifteen hundred years of slaughter and blood Christianity spread across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Universities can start to overcome this by eliminating merit as prime admission gate & changing their mission to serving all students of the (nation / state / other area ) equally by breaking the populations in those areas into selection units and selecting x students from each area based on merit within that selection unit. This would create equal protection for those underserved kids in urban zones with inferior schools and might even bring up the minority selections for a change.
* urban areas would have a lot more units to select from due to population density.

People forget legacies at Harvard. Between 40% and 50% of all whites admitted are legacies, children of staff or athletes. The breakdown I could find regarding race at Harvard: White 34%, Asian-Americans 28%, Hispanic 13%, African-Americans 13%. The case was about how fewer Asians were allowed in, discriminating against them.

IMHO, this case is not going to open up more places for non-legacy whites. It will open up more places for Asians and possibly Hispanics. I look at the demographics of Caltech, which does not use race for admissions nor has legacies: White 21%, Asian-Americans 44%, Hispanic 22%, African-American 7%.

If Harvard admitted students similar to Caltech but kept legacies, only 12% or so of the admitted white studens would be non-legacies. Asians and Hispanics would increase by 50% .

I am not convinced that this decision will increase the number of whites at Harvard, if Harvard adopts a similar admission polocy as Caltech.

My old high school while I was there was called Kennedy Christian, it is now called Kennedy Catholic.

A much stronger correlation on who voted for Trump was not rural/urban divide, nor age, nor education, but church attendance.

The more often people attended church, the more likely they were to vote for Trump (including Black voters, though the percentage voting for Trump and frequently attending church was much lower).

Unaffiliated voters (don’t attend church, atheists, and agnostics) overwhelmingly voted for Biden.

Hispanic and AAPI voters were not broken out in the poll because the sample was too small.

Most White Americans who regularly attend worship services voted for Trump in 2020 (Pew Research, August 30, 2021)

In 2020, 91% of Black Protestants and 86% of atheists and agnostics voted for Biden. Only one of those groups gets attention from the Democratic Party.

A humorous and interesting read.

diet purveyors get way way more than 9% in my book

until and unless there’s a pill you could pop and still eat ‘what you want’ i dont see that as a solution either.

yes the food industry creates the availability and makes it easy to eat poorly.

mostly though people dont have the time, somewhat the desire, and sometimes the money to eat ‘right’.

everyone does have the time and money to eat better than they do. they still need some desire or internal motivation.

the problem with eating, like many other things (smoking) is the deleterious effects arent immediate. whether it’s creeping weight gain or other health problems that dont manifest for a while (diabetes, anemia, osteoporosis, whatever) because there’s no instant feedback, it’s hard to come to grips with spending that time and money for what doesnt appear to be any benefit.

for now you still have to wanna.

and for that you have to understand something about nutrition.
many diets do that for you. simplifying it down to eat this, dont eat that.
and that never works long term.

general rules can help you start off. and if you can start to change your way of thinking you can slowly change what you buy, how you plan and what you eat. you can get better at it.

Michael Pollan wrote: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants”. a great, simple start.

also see his Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual

the table of contents is almost the whole book
each rule is about 1 page. a quick statement with an explanation
short, quick reading. easy to pick up and put down.
if you remember, retain and put in to action any 5 of them, you’re well on your way.
(and ‘avoid’ doesnt mean never)

it’s about long term change.

So of course the move fast break things disruptors would offshore their moderation efforts to the cheapest labor pool they can find, and underpay for the work even there.
from AP:

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — On the verge of tears, Nathan Nkunzimana recalled watching a video of a child being molested and another of a woman being killed.

Eight hours a day, his job as a content moderator for a Facebook contractor required him to look at horrors so the world wouldn’t have to. Some overwhelmed colleagues would scream or cry, he said.

Now, Nkunzimana is among nearly 200 former employees in Kenya who are suing Facebook and local contractor Sama over working conditions that could have implications for social media moderators around the world. It is the first known court challenge outside the United States, where Facebook settled with moderators in 2020.

@JUNlPER@twitter.com: this is going to be an insane prediction but donald trumps running mate in the general election is absolutely going to be RFK jr and they’re going to try to make it some sort of country unity ticket. i hope i’m wrong but i just feel this in my gut for some reason

Well since they can’t get JFK Jr the QAssholes will have to settle for that!

re: #323 Eclectic Cyborg

I’ve on a mission to lose 10 pounds. So this month I have been exercising more and trying to eat better (specifically more fruits and veggies, fewer carbs and fewer processed and fatty foods).

It SUCKS not being able to eat all the yummy stuff I would like to, but I’m managing (and still allowing myself a splurge here and there). I’ve been feeling great and my first weigh-in is this coming Saturday, so fingers crossed I’ve made some progress.

But yeah, no magic bullet for weight loss. Cut calories, increase activity. Repeat until you get where you want to go. The abundance of processed food around certainly poses a challenge.

there’s a lot of wisdom in what you say. almost every sentence could be a line in pollan’s book

yes calories in less calories out
yes, less processed foods, which almost automatically leads to less sugar and less processed carbs. that leaves you more ‘room’ to eat other stuff

but then it gets more complicated
for example: some fruits are better than others
all carbs arent necessarily bad
etc

best of luck

and there’s still lots of yummy stuff, if you plan right ;-)

and now….lunch!

“…The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is an American conservative Christian nonprofit organization founded by more than 30 Christian ministries, as a response to the American Civil Liberties Union, to defend “family values.” ADF’s major focus is strategizing and coordinating with hundreds of lawyers and right-wing groups to defend what they define as “Christian legal issues.” Formerly known as the Alliance Defense Fund, the group was established in January 31, 1994 and is currently based in Scottsdale, Arizona. People for the American Way notes that ADF’s founding groups “are influential members of the Right, they are pro-life and anti-gay and their ultimate goal is to see the law and government of the US enshrined with conservative Christian principles.”

What’s truly absurd about this is that this same Supreme Court, just days ago, ruled that several Southern states were going to have to redo their electoral maps (granted, after the damage had already been done for the 2022 midterms) because they failed to account for race. There is not even a semblance of an attempt at consistency with these fuckers.

White = admitted.

Court pretty much disallowing or accepting that the USA’s society has any racial bias baked into it. Historically or currently. And flying in the face of the country’s history and study after study indicating the higher hill that minorities have to climb in order to get the basic opportunities for advancement and education.

What you eat doesn’t matter for weight loss; it’s how much you eat (calorie wise) vs how much you burn.

I highly recommend the hacker’s diet online:
fourmilab.ch

You can weigh in daily. The site uses a moving average to smooth out day to day variation. After 2 weeks of results you get a pretty accurate view of where you’re headed even if your daily weigh in is out of whack.

Even more important than exercise (for losing weight) is keeping track of how many calories you’re consuming. Fatsecret is a great free app for doing this. Buy a food scale and weight/log everything. It’s way easier to not eat something than to burn it off with exercise. Good luck! Excess weight is potentially as bad as smoking (worse in extreme cases).

We Must Deploy Troops To Jessica Linden’s Uterus Immediately
Gen. William Patterson, U.S. Army

To protect America’s interests, it is sometimes necessary to mobilize and deploy a military force. We now stand on the brink of such a time.

The tactical importance of Jessica Linden’s uterus to national security is twofold: First, with its rich, fertile walls, this uterus is a vital source of future Americans. Second, the uterus is situated in an extremely strategic location, leaving it vulnerable to a hostile foreign power. This uterus must be given top priority by the Pentagon. Establishing a strong U.S. military presence in Jessica Linden’s uterine region is by far the most sensible course of action….

God, this sucks so much. I have to watch these assholes undo literally centuries of progress, and there’s nothing I can do about it. And my kids are going to be saddled with the burden of fixing it.

well, twenty years from now, when some well-to-do white person tells you they’re voting for susan sarandon because their purity pony won’t be saddled by a pragmatic democrat, you’ll have years of empirical data showing that women are dying and that black people are still being damaged by systemic racism. They won’t know what systemic racism is, of course, because that will no longer be taught in schools.

The love of God, and the love of our neighbor, it’s what the entire law rests upon (to paraphrase the Bible).

Also, Hillel the Elder:
“That which is hateful to you, do not do unto your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn.”

Saw the comment above about The Abyss and the sub implosion and decided to do one better: A sub implosion and in a film involving the Titanic. I present to you a clip from the first attempt to adapt a Clive Cussler novel to a major film: Raise the Titanic!:

[Embedded content]

That’s more like it, much more realistic than the one in The Abyss. In particular you would not have a big air bubble coming up out of the wreckage. The air inside the sub would be compressed to a tiny fraction of its original volume and momentarily heated to incandescent temperature. It would continue to shrink as it cooled though and would eventually either dissolve into the warer around it or expand very slowly as it rose to the surface. There would be a brief but very bright flash during the implosion but this may not be visible from the outside.
