Trump ranting about immigrants

People act like Trump’s appeal is a mystery, or it’s based on economic anxiety or being “forgotten” in coal towns or whatever, but that’s nonsense. Trump is a racist, he says other countries are shitholes, and the who come from them are dirty criminals, and Republican voters nod their heads in agreement.

There’s no explanation for that aside from the obvious conclusion that they are bigots and he speaks for them.

I’m still processing the idea that a major political party will (and legally can) accept political donations for a national election, and send all of it to pay for the fraud judgement against one man who was found liable for rape, fraud, and defamation, and will soon be convicted of stealing nuclear secrets.

re: #152 Colère Tueur de Lapin ✅

Curious about why?

To expand on that, abortions in Israel are fully covered for women under 33 for any and all reasons. For women over 33, coverage is specifically in cases of rape, fetal defects, and risks to the mother’s life.

As for the reason? In a nutshell, a whole lot of bureaucracy. The state’s ministry of health determines each year which medications and treatments are covered in full or part based on demand, costs, age groups, impact and other factors. Due to budgetary constraints, not everything can fit in the “medicine basket”, as it’s referred to, so if a certain group needs something the least when compared to others, it’ll get left out.
While the decision-making isn’t made fully public (this year they explained a handful of choices out of hundreds), the reasoning appears to be that women aged 34-45 in normal circumstances don’t require it as much and can afford the full cost compared to younger age groups, and that covering medications/procedures for other groups is a higher priority.

emmanuel lasker did that for his entire career, baiting opponents into attacking. He also spent his career playing at a time when defensive skill was not nearly as advanced as it was in the 70’s, so once his opponent’s attacks fizzled, they were just dead fish ready to be skinned.

Michigan Republican duped into reading the plot of ‘E.T.’ as an illegal immigrant story

rawstory.com

State Representative Steve Carra (R) who bills himself as a “a Trump-endorsed conservative fighter” running for state representative in St. Joseph and Cass counties was captured sipping a cup of coffee while recording himself reading a submitted vignette from a viewer; possibly a constituent, and first reported by Michigan Tea.

“The other day I saw this wild story about an illegal alien who was seperated from his family and then taken in by some kids who hid him from the authorities and their parents,” he read. “I guess he was gifted at medicine and healing people.”

“But he also got the 10-year-old drunk at school and persuaded to sexually harass another student.”

Carra appeared to believe every word.

And he’s too F’n stupid to realize this is the plot of…”E.T.”!

Alabama Sets the Stage for a Supreme Court Fight Over IVF

No mater what the politicians say, this is what the first birthers think. Big Fertility must be brought down.

The Alabama ruling should serve as a wake up call to Americans committed to defending unborn children. There are now two fronts in the battle to protect children’s right to life. We must not only challenge the baby-taking industry, but the baby-making industry.

Once again, they want the state to determine what happens instead of the people involved in the medical process.

I expect the GOP will have to alter their current “I’m for IVF” shortly, as the MAGA conservatives hit their emails.

We just watched Oppenheimer. Yes, I was angry at Strauss and the board as it should be, but you know what also got me angry because I have experienced it before: The people around him not understanding how he could hold a more complex picture of the world in his head than they wanted. Specifically, in one case, how he could see the need for labor to organize and yet not be a communist. It was a running theme through the movie.

It was interesting seeing some of the actors needing to lose weight for their characters, and others needing to put on weight.

There are four definite votes to outlaw IVF—Slappy T, Don Alito, The Handmaiden and Gorsuch.

The three liberal ladies won’t outlaw.

Roberts being the fucking chicken that he is will probably side with the three liberals which means it will be the drunk who is the deciding vote.

My guess for the next step - in Alabama, lawsuits in Federal courts will be brought to protect the civil rights of these embryos, since they are human beings. who is responsible for their welfare - the state or the parents. (Heck, were they provided proper informed consent?/snark) That is how I believe this will eventually end up at SCOTUS.

There is no murder without intent. The doctor could have criminal liability using a negligence standard. The woman wouldn’t, unless she did something like drug use to create the risk of losing the baby.

My son was born by artificial insemination by husband (AIH). The Catholic Church would accept this as we were married. If we had used a sperm donor that was not me, the Catholic Church would outlaw it.

Just as it would outlaw surrogacy. So, if the husband has bad sperm, they are SOL. Same if the woman cannot produce eggs.

So, no children for them and the entire genetic potential of two human bloodlines going back hundreds of thousands of years comes to an end.

My nephew called to say he and his girlfriend were on the coast and wanted to stop by and visit us. I said we were up in Sonoma county at the groove pit and sorry to miss him. A while later he texted to say the harbor was crazy full of tourists so he parked in our driveway and hoped we didn’t mind. I said ‘No problem - there’s a key under the welcome bear if you need to go inside.’

Two hours later, I get texts from him and the neighbors - they saw him, said hi, and had him and his girlfriend on their deck for susnset cocktails (which is what we just did with them last night - lasted well beyond sunset)…I texted back for him to be careful because our neighbors were dangerous and he could end up sleeping at our house.

Such was the case when a grieving family had to drag a Texas hospital to court because the legal department was barring doctors from taking a corpse off life support. Why? Because Texas Repubs had written a law requiring all life-saving measures be attempted to bring a fetus to term even if the mother’s life has expired so vaguely that the hospital’s lawyers wanted a judge to give them cover through judicial order to terminate life support.

G. Elliott Morris: “I have become a little obsessed tonight about what we should be expecting Trump to hit in this primary a priori. That is, given Trump is assumed to be the eventual party nominee and almost universally liked in the GOP, should he be winning more than 60 percent in South Carolina?”

Josh Marshall: “I’m not going to speculate what it means for the general election. But this is a lot of persistent opposition for a candidate who has always been running as a de facto incumbent. Even if you set that de facto incumbency aside, it’s quite a lot for a candidate who is, whatever technicalities you want to get caught up in, the presumptive nominee. 40% of Republican primary voters are still showing up to say they don’t want Trump even when they know they’re definitely going to get him.”

Any time a poll came up showing Obama confidently ahead, they’d talk about demographics and voter enthusiasm being against him and that led to the BS about “unskewed polls.”

So what happened? Election Night came, Obama won confidently, and the stories the next morning were about how Romney had so bought into the pollster BS that he hadn’t even bothered writing a concession speech.

Oh my!

What Have We HERE????

Anti-LGBTQ+ Church Leader Ousted for Sending Sexy Photos

The leader of an ultra-conservative Catholic movement that targeted the LGBTQ+ community was allegedly sending his staff members sexually suggestive photos when he resigned in November.

Michael Voris, who led the Detroit-based Church Militant, quit due to a “morality clause,” the board of the church initially claimed. Then, it was revealed that Voris, who vehemently ran a McCarthyist campaign against social-political adversaries by claiming they were gay, was sending post-workout photos of himself, shirtless. Earlier in 2023, photos of Voris and screenshots of racy text messages appeared on the church’s database.

Then, staff members at Church Militant began making complaints. “I’ve learned Michael has been in the habit of sending shirtless selfies to multiple men inside and outside the apostolate,” then-Church Militant webcast host Christine Niles said in November. “They reveal an unhealthy obsession with his physique, not to mention the terrible optics—particularly considering his former lifestyle.”

In 2016, Voris admitted to having an “extremely sinful” life
in the LGBTQ+ community, but that admission clearly never stalled his judgment.

Except it looks like, based on your prior comment, 30% of the voters were not Republicans. Assuming those 30% did not vote for Trump, that means that Trump won 86% of Republicans.

Well WaPo has posted their own exit poll numbers that better show the breakdowns and even if you limit the vote to self-identified Repubs, Trump’s cut of the vote only improves by 10% (70/29).

Exit polls not that favorable for Trump.

Only 5% were registered Democrats and 27% were Independents (likely Republican-leaning). He only won 73% of the Registered Republicans. And 26% of those registered Republican voted against Trump. And 24% of white evangelicals voted against Trump. 79% called themselves conservative. Only 3% said liberal.

So, yeah, some democrats likely voted agaist Trump. But a large perecentage of Republicans also voted against Trump.

The GOP race moves to Michigan Tuesday, where the latest poll gives Trump a sixty point lead over Haley. The race will effectively end on Super Tuesday, March 5. We’ll see if Haley drops out and endorses Trump before his criminal trial begins in Manhattan on March 25.

That’s really the long and short of it, she has little to lose by staying in the race and a lot to gain if she’s the only one standing as an alternative should something happen to him. He might neutralize that a bit if and when he announces his VP pick, but right now they’re the only two running so she’s the next in line if the party has to slam the panic button.

Unless Trump strokes out before Super Tuesday, March 5, the delegates at the GOP Convention will be overwhelmingly MAGA. Haley definitely won’t get their votes. If Trump is unavailable to be nominated at the Convention, there will be a titanic struggle between MAGA candidates for the nomination, people like DeSantis, Cruz, Noem, Lake and Marjorie Three Toes. It would be glorious to watch.

Hence why I mentioned his VP pick, because the party leadership will immediately hail them as the heir apparent if Orange Julius drops over before the convention. Until then, there’s nobody other than Haley who’s realistically still in the race, so if their God-Emperor croaked tomorrow, she’s the only one who could realistically argue that she’s still in the race.

I asked the people at the Putinversteher site what Russia has to show for all that the war has cost them so far in casualties, lost weapons, lost markets, brain drain, softening of the Ruble, etc,

and one answer was (and quote)

”-prevention of a complete Gaza type mass murder in Donetsk and Lugansk
-demilitarization of Nato and Europe”

Sweden and Finland joining NATO = demilitarization?!?

someone else went on to mention that a convertibvle Ruble and access to Western markets only benefited the oligarchs, and how “anecdotal evidence” indicates that the Russian people are better off now.

Basically the only thing that Russia can boast is they’ve managed to freeze the front lines for the better part of a year, but the flip side is they can’t make any advances without tens of thousands of casualties. They’re down to bringing T-62s and T-55s out of storage and begging North Korea for artillery shells. Gone are the heady days of vatnik armchair generals warning the world that if they didn’t stop their support of Ukraine then Russian tanks would be rolling into Poland next. Now they’re left boasting about how it only took half a year and an army to finally raise the Russian flag atop a blasted pile of rubble.

This is one of those times I miss our old GM, because she’d handle this based upon whether they’re still in the room or not.

Stuff in room but no people? She’d call the number on file and give them no more than an hour to get here, pack their shit, and vacate the room. So if 12:01pm got here before they did, their stuff got put on a luggage cart and wheeled down to the back office while the room was cleaned.

They were still in the room? They got until 12:00pm to pack their shit and leave, because at 12:01pm we were calling the cops and having them trespassed off the property.

Meanwhile, in China…..

China’s property crisis deepened as Moody’s withdrew a flurry of credit ratings from key companies.

The credit ratings agency issued sudden removals for 11 Chinese businesses today in a blow to Beijing’s efforts to revive the fortunes of the world’s second largest economy.

Moody’s withdrew scores from 10 Chinese developers, including Logan Group, Ronshine China and Zhenro Properties Group, saying the decision was down to “business reasons”.

Earlier it had removed its Baa3 score - one step away from junk territory - from one of the country’s major bad-debt managers, China Great Wall Asset Management.

The sudden action comes after Moody’s cut its outlook for Chinese sovereign bonds to negative in December.

We’re dealing with two unprecedented factors: first time in the primary era that we’ve had ANY former president try to get the nomination again after losing reelection, so we don’t have any benchmark for whether to see Trump as a quasi-incumbent for nominating purposes…

…and of course the first time we’ve had an insurrectionist would-be strongman with 91 criminal charges pending against him, etc.

Anyone who tells you they know what’s going to happen next has no idea.

I mean, he’s been the de facto leader of the Republican Party since his ouster in 2020. In that sense, he definitely seems to have a quasi-incumbent edge for the purposes of nomination. With that said, there is also a bit of backlash against him because of his many crimes, so the quasi-incumbent effect is dampened somewhat.

It’s looking like 2012 again, where the pollsters spent the spring and summer confidently telling folks that while Romney was trailing in virtually every poll that things would tighten up after the conventions when the “Rally ‘Round The Flag” effect took hold and it would be a nail-biter to the very end.

He lost Massachusetts! 😉😜
My favorite Romney story: On Election Night, he was holding court at the Boston convention center in the Seaport district. He paid for Atlas Fireworks to set up for his (eventual, he thought) victory celebration.

As we know now, the fireworks were never lit off.
At the scene, the Secret Service agent was said to have shook Mitt’s hand, and driven off.

Comfort isn’t just a Vision Pro problem — it’s a wearable one

As I sit here writing this in the Apple Vision Pro, I’m acutely aware of how the light seal presses against my forehead and cheekbones. It was relatively comfy when I slipped it on an hour ago. But now, every so often, I push up on the bridge — as if I’m a cartoon nerd saying, um, well, actually — just to give my face a break. This is despite the fact that I’ve done the scan to figure out my perfect light seal fit (33W, in case you’re wondering). So no, I’m not surprised that many Apple fans who returned their Vision Pros cited comfort as a major issue.

But this isn’t exclusively a Vision Pro problem. It’s a wearable problem.

I say this a lot in my reviews, but comfort is king. For other gadget categories, comfort is mostly a question of weight. With wearables, fit adds another layer of complexity. You’re not going to wear a smartwatch, smart ring, smart glasses, or a mixed reality headset if you don’t find it comfortable. The catch is that it’s hard to scale a comfy fit for the mass market. Even if a company tries its damnedest, somebody always gets left out.

Pro-Russia rebels in a separatist part of Moldova are preparing to ask Vladimir Putin to annex their region, amid warnings that an emboldened Kremlin is trying to destabilise Europe.

Gennady Chorba, a politician in Transnistria, which borders Ukraine, has said the rebel government will submit its request to the Kremlin on Wednesday during a special congress that last met in 2006.

“This will be voiced to Russia on behalf of citizens living on the left bank of the Dniester River,” Mr Chorba, was quoted as saying earlier last week.

His statement came a few days after Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said the rights of pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria must be respected.

Western analysts believe the development is part of Moscow’s “hybrid warfare” campaign to destabilise Europe.

Imminent political crisis’

The US-based Institute for the Study of War said Putin was trying to ramp up tension in Transnistria to create an “imminent political crisis” in Moldova, a former Soviet state that wants to join the EU.

Russia keeps roughly 2,000 soldiers in Transnistria and there were concerns in 2022 that the Kremlin could use it to open a second front after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Concrete machine gun posts facing Transnistria dot Ukraine’s western border.

However, Ukrainian officials are sceptical that Putin wants to formally annex Transnistria, a sentiment backed up by analysts in Chisinau, the Moldovan capital.

One source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that the Kremlin viewed the region and two other pro-Russia rebel states in Georgia as useful tools to use in its “hybrid warfare” against Europe, which has included funnelling migrants into the EU and spreading misinformation.

“Somebody may have ordered this to provoke tensions, to provoke reactions and it’s worked,” he said.

Alexandru Flenchea, a former Moldovan deputy prime minister and a former chief negotiator on Transnistria, said the statement may have been ordered by local businessmen who effectively run Transnistria as their fiefdom, because they want to derail EU customs integration with Moldova.

How about this for a fancy Sunday Dinner?

Champagne Chicken

This champagne chicken uses—you guessed it!—champagne—to turn ordinary skinless, boneless chicken breasts into a truly amazing dish with a world-class mushroom pan sauce. These old-school-type pan sauces are classic for a reason. The depth of flavor is impressive.

Ingredients

4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as needed
2 tablespoons olive oil
freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 pinch cayenne pepper
2 generous cups thickly sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup diced shallots
3 cloves garlic, minced
4 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups champagne
1/2 teaspoon tomato paste
2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
1 1/2 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon aged balsamic vinegar (optional)

OK—DIRECTIONS!!!!

Season chicken with salt on both sides.

Heat olive oil over high heat in a nonstick pan large enough to hold the chicken breasts in a single layer, and cook chicken on both sides until lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes per side. While the first side is browning, season tops of breasts with black pepper and cayenne to taste.

Once both sides are browned, turn off heat, and transfer chicken to a plate, and reserve. Chicken can be transferred into the refrigerator until needed.

Melt butter in the pan over medium-high heat, then add mushrooms and a pinch of salt to the pan cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms begin to brown.

Stir in shallots and garlic, and cook, stirring, until shallots turn translucent, 3 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle in flour and cook, stirring, until the flour disappears and starts sticking to the bottom of the pan, about 1 minute.

Pour in champagne and use a spatula to scrape any caramelization off the bottom of the pan. Let mixture simmer until the champagne has reduced by about half, and has thickened enough that the trail left by a spatula dragged across the bottom of the pan takes a few seconds to fill in, 5 to 10 minutes.

Stir in tomato paste, fresh thyme, and chicken broth, and wait for the sauce to return to a simmer. Stir in cream, and let the sauce cook until reduced and thickened enough to coat a spoon, about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low.

Stir in balsamic vinegar, and return reserved chicken to the pan. Finish cooking the chicken by simmering gently in the sauce, turning over and basting every few minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted near the center maintains a temperature of 150 degrees F (66 degrees C) for 3 to 4 minutes. The time it will take to complete cooking the chicken breasts will vary, but internal temperature is a sure guide to doneness.

Taste for seasoning, and serve chicken immediately with sauce spooned over the top.
