Veritasium: Why It Was Almost Impossible to Make the Blue LED

Science • Views: 12,727

Well, the thoroughly corrupt Supreme Court Republicans are doing exactly what we knew they would. People who predicted a better result were fooling themselves. But there’s nothing we can do, so let’s learn something instead.

The blue LED was supposed to be impossible—until a young engineer proposed a moonshot idea. Head to brilliant.org to start your free 30-day trial, and the first 200 people get 20% off an annual premium subscription.

From downstairs:
There is a really cool & really good German guy that does aviation history. He just dropped a video on one of the most insane of all the German desperation weapons of WWII - the HE-162 aka The Volksjager. It couldn’t have won but thankfully it was too late to kill too many …

I’m going to be watching it now 😎

Who is he protecting himself from? Not from Democrats. Romney isn’t worried that some woke Karen is going to get up in his grill. He’s worried about Republicans. He’s worried that he is not physically safe from the people who voted for him.”

“And yet Romney still caucuses as a Republican.”

So yesterday, I was asking for help in getting the NYT Wordle site to allow me to login. I tried suggestions I found on the web plus one or two suggestions from here. Nothing worked. Today, I had a message from my laptop manufacturer saying a new BIOS was available and do I want to install it. I clicked yes. The new bios was installed and my laptop rebooted. For shits and giggles, I thought I try the login once more. Surprise, surprise, surprise! It let me in. New bios or the reboot? I’m inclined to think it was rebooting, for whatever reason.

My partner told me “Forget about it, sizzzzlerz. It’s Windows-town”.

Why is it that some links, (like this one) take over the existing tab when I click on them when most just pop open a new tab? Worse when it does take over the tab and I click back to go back to LGF it takes me back to the previous thread.

LeVar Burton addresses book flagged by Alabama library because author’s last name is ‘Gay’

Burton spoofed the popular children’s television show “Reading Rainbow” with a segment titled, “Why Did They Ban This Book?”

He showed a group of children several books, including “Read Me a Story, Stella,” a picture book about two siblings building a doghouse.

al.com reported in October that Huntsville-Madison County Public librarians had mistakenly added the title to a list of potentially “sexually explicit” books to be moved from the children section because the author’s name is Marie-Louise Gay.

“What!” one of the children exclaimed, placing her hands on her face when Burton explained the reasoning. “Are you dead serious?” another child asked. Multiple children replied at once, “Because of the last name?”

World War II historians have encountered this style of idiocy with the name of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Enola Gay. This was named for the pilot’s mother, Enola Gay Tibbets (1890-1966)..

US newspaper claims Hiroshima bombing caused by ‘homosexual’ plane

Whereas the plane that dropped the bomb was actually named the Enola Gay, The Observer Chronicle has decided to rename the vehicle - as the “Enola Homosexual”

The article reads: “U.S. bomber, the Enola Homosexual, dropped the primary atomic weapon ever for use in wartime on Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945.

“The bombing, along side one other atomic assault on the town of Nagasaki two days later, are extensively credited with bringing the struggle within the Pacific to a swift conclusion.”

It is unclear whether the paper purposefully made the change, or if it was a mistake made by the reporter when writing the article.

The reboot.

Browsers these days, once you start them, or on startup depending on what you’ve allowed, don’t actually shut down when you close the windows. That way they respond faster the next time you open it. But that can mean that, if they get in a weird state, they won’t get out of it until you force it to completely shut down.

Mine got in a weird state where the laptop would not shut down. I fixed it with a restart, which must have forced a shutdown that was stuck somewhere. Pardon my technical lingo.

That was my thought too. One of those you end up seriously injured or dead once a year, and the other you get a whole bunch of free chicken dinners.

Although now I am wondering if it meant the orangutan had the sword or you had a sword? Either way, I am picking the chicken.

A fitbit will register you playing air guitar as steps.

It will not register you pushing you grocery cart at the grocery store.

I’m presuming it has something to do with the motion of your arm. Funny how that works.

A lot of browsers tend to leave orphan processes or handles on your computer. Or a memory leak. So you probably want to reboot your computer periodically to clean this up. My virus/performance checker notes this every time it runs. And Win11 is doing it by default since it’s running Edge in the background.

He will federalize National Guard troops in Red States and send them into Blue state cities to round up anyone who looks Hispanic. I wonder how many US citizens will be rounded up? How would you prove you are a citizen? Does not sound like any due process. Just rounded up and sent to camps.

Sprinter Tyson Gay was also referred to as “Tyson Homosexual” in an article some years back, apparently because the site in question was using a filter that changed all instances of Gay to “homosexual”.

That was the infamous OneNewsNow, the official propaganda outlet of the American Family Association.

The website reported: “‘It means a lot to me,’ the 25-year-old Homosexual said. ‘I’m glad my body could do it, because now I know I have it in me.’”

It continued: “Wearing a royal blue uniform with red and white diagonal stripes across the front, along with matching shoes, all in a tribute to 1936 Olympic star Jesse Owens, Homosexual dominated the competition.

“In Saturday’s opening heat, Homosexual pulled way up, way too soon, and nearly was caught by the field, before accelerating again and lunging in for fourth place.”

And it was not the only blunder the website made. American basketball player Rudy Gay also got the auto filter treatment with a story saying: “Memphis Grizzlies backers hit the hay hoping that Kevin Love would open things up for Rudy Homosexual in the frontcourt.”

Indeed, part of the Trump plan is to deny birthright citizenship to people born here if both of their parents were undocumented immigrants when they were born. I would not assume that they only intend to apply that rule proactively.

Trump’s ‘Knock on the Door’

He will federalize National Guard troops in Red States and send them into Blue state cities to round up anyone who looks Hispanic. I wonder how many US citizens will be rounded up? How would you prove you are a citizen? Does not sound like any due process. Just rounded up and sent to camps.

Wonder when Hispanic Republicans will realize they belong to the leopard face-eating party which will love eating their faces?

Mexicans (the default brown-skinned amongst white racists) are just the start. Just wait until Black America realizes they weren’t kidding with the whole “ship then back to Africa” thing. Those Black men playing around with misogyny and social ladder games are about to find out the hard way leopards eat faces.

Not quite related but my years in pacemaker design made me keenly aware that making the wrong assumptions from what the accelerometer is reporting can lead to confusing outcomes. Only had a 1-d XL in the cans back then (most now have 3D)

One time, engineers and myself fashioned a wearable vest festooned with different types of XLs positioned in different locations in a number of cans to help determine the “best” for our needs. I put on the vest and got on a treadmill. I must walk heavy because all the XLs clearly showed each step while walking but once the pace picked up and I could go from a slow trot to a nice steady run, some of the XLs nearly flatlined on activity because I had a sweet, beautiful stride back then.

Walking, running, bicycling, swimming, all have different activity signatures. Which is why, if you have a rate-responsive device, the clinician tries to tune the response to what you do. Best ones in rate-response use blend activity (XL) and respiration data (derived from change in impedance from the tip of the pacing lead to the can as this sensing vector partially crosses the lungs). Often times, clinicians don’t do any tuning to the individual as (1) it takes time, (2) “old” people are happy with any rate response pacing (not my belief - I think everyone benefits from proper programming though I can see that if you were getting tuckered out just walking to the mailbox and basic rate response “fixed” that you’d be thrilled and another 10 or 20% improvement isn’t as remarkable).

The Texas National Guard is 24% Hispanic. This could get interesting. Abbott’s own official militia, the unpaid and usually unarmed Texas State Guard, is mostly non-Hispanic. If the Guard refused orders, Trump and Abbott would see it as an opportunity to deputize fascist militias, probably in the form of church-based assistance groups

I have mentioned before that when I was in Intel school at Ft Huachuca back during Gulf 1, there were lots of rumors that went unconfirmed (but very not put down by) the people who would have known that there were division sized battles outside of Beijing prior to the Tienanmen crackdown. They had to kill the PLA regulars in their way first…

It would be very much like that and there would be no keeping off of the internet. I really don’t think Hot Wheels really understands what he’s gotten himself into.

The best thing that could happen for the people of Texas would be for Dark Brandon to tell the CIA to rendition Hot Wheels to The Hague via one of their various black sites. Let that bastard die in a Euro prison even if isn’t officially a “life” sentence.

This ruling upends the Constitution in so many ways it isn’t even clear at this point. basically,

the 10th Amendment is now written out by SCOTUS edict or simply relegated to purely political interpretation at will.

14A Sec3 is unenforceable due to the Vagueness doctrine and it is now Constitutionally gone, when applied towards Republicans and Trump at least.

We will definitely see more violence enacted against the Federal Government should Democrats and Biden will this upcoming elections enabled by this ruling. Whether or not anyone can be held accountable without an explicit Federal law and actual enforcement or further amendment remains to be seen.

lawhawk  Feb 8, 2024 • 12:23:45pm

Slate’s floating the possibility of a “grand bargain” between the justices on the two Trump cases - the first being that they knock down the CO disqualification by relying on Justice Jackson’s concerns that it’s a national election so we shouldn’t have individual states hodgepodge picking and choosing who to disqualify. The justices would also find no immunity claims, allowing the criminal cases against Trump to proceed.

I’m not entirely buying into that, because on the merits and the law Trump should lose both outright.

If this is the bargain, I’ll take it though (choking it down). The criminal cases are essential, and it blows all of the ancillary claims of privilege/immunity that glom on to Trump’s immunity claims out of the water too - he wasn’t acting in an official capacity, but trying to subvert democracy by disenfranchising millions of voters despite clearly losing the election.

There’s also a basic federalism issue here. It would undoubtedly be constitutional for CO to pass a law canceling their presidential elections this cycle and taking the power to appoint electors back into the direct hands of the state legislature. Direct appointment of presidential electors by state legislatures was the norm for a significant fraction of US history.

Given that background, what Federal issue could possibly preclude Trump getting disqualified from the CO ballot via the ordinary operation of CO state law (also a creation of the state legislature)?

In fact, it’s 25% of all NYC residents speak Spanish at home. 51% of NYC residents speak English. 49% speak another language at home. Of that 49%, 50% speak Spanish = 25% Spanish speaking at home. That means roughly 2 million New York City residents speak Spanish, so Sliwa is a fucking lunatic to think that he could tell someone was a migrant just on hearing them speak Spanish.

But that’s where the fascist GOP is heading, where they’ll round up anyone who doesn’t conform to their white Christian ideal.

re: #58 lawhawk

Slate’s floating the possibility of a “grand bargain” between the justices on the two Trump cases - the first being that they knock down the CO disqualification by relying on Justice Jackson’s concerns that it’s a national election so we shouldn’t have individual states hodgepodge picking and choosing who to disqualify. The justices would also find no immunity claims, allowing the criminal cases against Trump to proceed.

I’m not entirely buying into that, because on the merits and the law Trump should lose both outright.

If this is the bargain, I’ll take it though (choking it down). The criminal cases are essential, and it blows all of the ancillary claims of privilege/immunity that glom on to Trump’s immunity claims out of the water too - he wasn’t acting in an official capacity, but trying to subvert democracy by disenfranchising millions of voters despite clearly losing the election.

that is how it will have to be. I would probably have been tempted to suggest that to the court if I were arguing there. “The problem for this court will be that if you determine Trump is free to run, you are then compelled to find he doesn’t have immunity, as otherwise, you are greenlighting not only the insurrection, but his complete lack of any consequences for it.”

Naaah, disgustingly, Curt Sliwa is still viewed as some sort of folk hero in NY: and people here (over-sensitively, but somewhat understandably) get freaked out by “crime” issues, so - egregious as it was - I wouldn’t expect much *official* action taken.
Civil action, OTOH? If I were the guy they tackled, I would have been on to sharkiest lawyer I could get off a bus-stop bench ASAP. And the fact that there was live video of the incident could only boost his case…

PS: the NYT report on this said that the victim reportedly had some apparently shoplifted items in his backpack, so you know the tabloids will be all over that trying to excuse the vigilantism: doubtful that it will be of much relevance, though….

Will Rebekkah Mercer still pay his bills?

More Apologies And Libel Bills For Human Beer Fart James O’Keefe

wonkette.com

O’Keefe and his former “nonprofit” Project Veritas (which he allegedly looted) just settled a libel lawsuit brought by Robert Weisenbach, a postmaster from Erie, Pennsylvania. O’Keefe, whose active fantasy life and sticky fingers ALLEGEDLY got him ousted from Veritas last year, accused Weisenbach of doing the “ballot harvesting” and the vote fraud during the 2020 presidential election.

O’Keefe’s greatest hits include having to pay ACORN $100k for libelslandering its employees — that one, you’ll remember, was broken by this very website, Wonkette! — buying Ashley Biden’s stolen diary (an ongoing saga), pretending to be a telephone repairman to break into a US senator’s office, and paying a woman to pretend to be a child sex abuse victim of Senate candidate Roy Moore in order to double bankshot gotcha a reporter from the Washington Post, who did not bite.

His latest magnum fictus was based on the claim that a postal worker named Richard Hopkins had overheard the “Anti-Trump” postmaster demanding that employees backdate mail-in ballots that arrived too late at the Erie General Mail Facility.

On November 6, two days after the election, O’Keefe posted an interview with Hopkins as a pixelated “whistleblower,” swearing that “Rob the postmaster” was telling workers to separate ballots, and showing a picture of a smiling Weisenbach that looks to have been ripped from a Facebook page. “The fraud is happening as we speak … they are going to be collecting and backdating ballots in Pennsylvania tomorrow according to our whistleblower,” O’Keefe heaved.

A frothing mob of suckers sicc’ed themselves on the mailman, who was put on leave from his job as he and his family were assailed with death threats, eventually forced to flee their home after one particularly rabid Trump fan had to be subdued by police in the driveway.

And lest you think O’Keefe ruins people’s lives for free, the intrepid “journalist” also set up multiple fundraising accounts, netting more than $350,000.

This is O’Keefe’s game, and he played it well enough that Project Veritas raked in $22 million in 2020, which is a lot of suckers. But because he’s a walking criminal liability, and possibly because he abused employees, or maybe because he spent ridiculous amounts on limos and musical theater, James himself was separated from his own nonprofit in 2023. Sad! Unfortunately the dollar amount won by the postmaster is undisclosed, but we can leave you with the apology:

“Mr. Hopkins has since come to learn that he was wrong — neither Mr. Weisenbach nor any other USPS employee in Erie, Pennsylvania engaged in election fraud or any other wrongdoing related to mail-in ballots. With this update, Project Veritas is aware of no evidence or other allegation that election fraud occurred in the Erie Post Office during the 2020 Presidential Election.”

Well, that’s nice to know.

I also just looked, and Ring doorbells apparently turn the trickle charging off when the temperature drops below freezing, to prevent damage due to the reduced chemical activity. US newspaper claims Hiroshima bombing caused by ‘homosexual’ plane

So I am reminded of the theme song to the Flintstone’s theme song:

The Flintstones Opening and Closing Theme 1960 1966

So we need to change the lyrics to “have a yabba-dabba-doo time, a dabba-doo time, we’ll have a homosexual old time”?

Seems a bit extreme!

So are Barney and Fred pedo’s too? Do Betty and Wilma know that Pebbles and Bam-bam are routinely being taken down to the DinoBronto Pizza Parlors basement for abuse and Adrenochrome scavenging?

My Dog, my childhood has been forever damaged…

………………………

I tried to post a Mastodon link when I realized it had a big old typo, so I edited the post but when I reposted it here the typo still came up. I’m not trying to send a message in Morse Code.

One thing that has stood out and shown me just how stupid some folks have become;
They turned into the very people they hated as a child.
They said to themselves they would never be that.
Whoops. Better pull that map out, I think you lost your way.

2024: Cemetery Park, Ventura, California

City park that was once a pioneer burial site that fell into disrepair and the city took it over back in late 1960’s

A lot of descendants get butthurt over dogs and frisbees but that’s a big shrug 🤷 from everyone else. I personally would rather have happiness than reverence at my relatives burial site, but just an opinion

Usually, it’s real trouble when your dogs find a body.

200-foot antenna stolen from Alabama AM radio station. Transmitter and all other equipment also missing.

Did they have insurance? No they did not.

I hope they have two cousins named “Vinnie” because if they don’t, they’re screwed.

And that’s not a reference to “My Cousin Vinnie”. They are going to need committed Gumbas to get that equipment back. It’s already headed out of country to serve in a smuggling op, I suppose.
