The GOP is a Terrorist Organization  Mar 29, 2023 • 8:24:08pm

This is interesting reading, though I’m not quite ready to believe *anything* the GOP says about *anything* because they are the quintessential embodiment of cynicism and bad faith.

Of COURSE it’s about Willis. The more they deny it, the truer it is.

Brian Kemp is racist trash who spent his life in public office disenfranchising black voters. The only reason Georgia now has 2 Democratic Senators is because of the fit Trump threw in 2020 when he lost reelection. This means little in the long run because the state level positions are all held by the GOP who will be making sure that this will not last permanently, with the assistance of the GOP run SCOTUS which has never met a gerrymander and a voter disenfranchisement it won’t support.

Today’s big news in AI images is a new version of Stable Diffusion:

Stable Diffusion XL is here — What’s new?

Looks great.

I just started playing with Adobe Firefly a few days ago and already it is overtaken by StabilityAI.

Still waiting for Google to unleash Imagen.

I’m working my way up. First the horror of Dal-E mini, then Midjourney, which is so much better, but extremely limited and error-prone, and I’ll start playing with Stable Diffusion next. It looks like it’s a lot more useful than Midjourney.

A new poll shows Americans care more about money and less about religion and patriotism than they did a quarter century ago, and a New York Times columnist calls the decline in the extent to which Americans care about traditional values “startling.”

According to the findings of the newly released Wall Street Journal poll, 43 percent of respondents cited money as very important, a 12 percentage point jump from 1998.

Patriotism has tumbled from being a top priority among 70 percent of respondent to 38 percent today, and religion has fallen almost as much as a top priority, from 62 percent in 1998 to 39 percent today.

Patriotism and religion don’t pay bills for most of us.

Midjourney is liked because in its latest version users seem to appreciate that few images are categorically “bad”.

But Midjourney images all seem to be from a same look, like the same art school.

This is why the religious right is fervently trying to install a theocracy.

They are losing the ability to get new converts by choice, so they are going to embrace the way of the sword.

Considering the 25 year gap since the last poll taken in 1998, I think there’s a strong argument to be made that the far-right’s total freakout in the wake of 9/11 and over-reliance upon accusing their opponents of being insufficiently patriotic and religiously devoted had a good deal to do with the sharp change in results.

My oldest brother taught each younger sib how to play all the games. And for about 60 years, has enjoyed the hell out of winning most of them.

He went to California while my brother from Germany was there, and told me about the German one buying a Scrabble set to take back to Berlin, where apparently they can’t be found. Then the oldest brother described how he won the game they first played on it.

There are hundreds of thousands of attorneys and legal workers. I would suspect that many of them do understand that if the justice system is degraded to the point that Trump is not held accountable for his misdeeds, it diminishes they and their life long participation in the legal field. At some point, they become irrelevent.

Woke up this morning in Europe to read this:

Board members picked by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to oversee the governance of Walt Disney World said Wednesday that their Disney-controlled predecessors pulled a fast one on them by passing restrictive covenants that strip the new board of many of its powers.

The current supervisors of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District said at a meeting that their predecessors last month signed a development agreement with the company that gave Disney maximum developmental power over the theme park resort’s 27,000 acres in central Florida.

The five supervisors were appointed by the Republican governor to the board after the Florida Legislature overhauled Disney’s government in retaliation for the entertainment giant publicly opposing so-called “Don’t Say Gay” legislation that bars instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade, as well as lessons deemed not age-appropriate.

And here’s the neat part 😄 -

Under the terms of the agreement, the district is prohibited from using the name “Disney” or any symbols associated with the theme park resort without the company’s permission, nor can it use the likeness of Mickey Mouse, other Disney characters or other intellectual property in any manner. The company can sue for damages for any violations, and the agreement is in effect until perpetuity, according to the declaration.

If the agreement is deemed to violate rules against perpetuity, it will be in effect until 21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of England’s King Charles III, the declaration said.

In a statement, Disney said all agreements were above board and took place in public.

Interesting thread on civil-military relations in Israel and how they played out in the current strife there. It mostly matches my understanding.

However, one thing I understand differently is that the reservists who refused service did so because they. do not divide themselves into two parts, citizen and reservist. They view themselves as citizen and that their reservist duty derives from that.

As always, there are some lizards here who are far more knowledgeable in this than I am. I always look forward to hearing their thoughts.

In a similar vein, I’ve lost count over the years how many times I’ve been told by ammosexuals that any proposed gun control law that cannot stop 100% of gun crime isn’t worth pursuing if it in any way infringes upon the 2A rights of anybody, BUT draconian anti-immigration laws that would not stop even 5% of all “illegal immigration” are worth pursuing at any cost.

Yeah, after weeks of privately wondering if Disney was gonna do anything to snuff out Ron’s little stunt, I find out today that they did something but that it pretty much went under the radar because the “liberal media” was too busy oohing and aahing at how the FL GQP had stripped the Mouse of all their power.

Disney was there long before him and will be there long after him - or until the seas swallow the entire state of Florida, in which case Disney World will become its own country, surrounded by a seawall. That’s just it, due to my ignorance of the move on Disney’s part to effectively neutralize the new board before it could even be appointed, I saw no indications that they were really taking the blatant attempt to seize control seriously. A part of me assumed there was something legal in the works, but the overall impression (via the media) was that they were just accepting the impending appointment of their new overlords.

It really demonstrates how cocky and ignorant these fuckers are that they were totally in the dark about this move on Disney’s part until after they’d taken office and found out how screwed they were. This is a company that has been effectively running itself as its own little fiefdom in the state for decades, did they not think that The Mouse’s lawyers were hard at work finding an angle to neutralize them?

This part at the ABC article immediately leapt out at me:

Under the terms of the agreement, the district is prohibited from using the name “Disney” or any symbols associated with the theme park resort without the company’s permission, nor can it use the likeness of Mickey Mouse, other Disney characters or other intellectual property in any manner. The company can sue for damages for any violations, and the agreement is in effect until perpetuity, according to the declaration.

So not only have they been stripped of power, but Disney also basically ruined all the plans that Ron and his underlings were slinging around about using the board to take control over the company’s intellectual property in order to remove “woke” influences from it. Nor will they be able to bypass Disney to continue advertising the park to maintain revenues from tourism by advertising the park and its attractions.

So DeSantis has now committed the state of Florida to a long, costly legal battle with Disney right as he’s preparing to launch an ill-fated presidential bid. There’s no “option B” as Ron has done everything he can to make it clear that this was a politically-motivated power grab, and Disney has no financial incentive to do anything more than bleed the state dry by prolonging the fight. So we’re looking at weeks or months of the witless fools that apparently comprise whatever legal force the state possesses versus attack lawyers that pick their teeth with the bones of poor fools that get caught selling bootleg Mickey Mouse plushies.

McCarthy’s up shit creek without a paddle and it’s been plainly obvious for weeks now. Every question about a GQP budget proposal is met with stalling tactics and empty promises. It’s becoming pretty much impossible to even suggest the bare bones of one with how every new suggested cut immediately sparks massive public backlash. And even if he finally manages to piece something together, it’s almost a guarantee that it will immediately be savaged by Trump to wild cheers from the base.

At least in 2011 John of Orange was making a genuine (if ill-fated) effort to reach something resembling a compromise with the WH. Qevin seems to stuck in a position where the only option is to just keep bullshitting about how he wants “negotiations” when it’s obvious he has no basis for negotiations and the only “deal” his caucus will accept is Biden’s unconditional surrender.

re: #77 Targetpractice

Exactly!

McCarthy has no budget, has shown no interest in developing any, and has no policy goals. Basically, he does not seem to want anything from the Administration. There appears to be nothing sane that the Administration can offer him.

It will require defections from the GOP House caucus to the Democrats to stop this mess. And that would require constituent pressure. Which would mean businesses would have to conclude that the damage threatens to be too great.

Former President Donald Trump’s team is taking a gleeful victory lap after Gov. Ron DeSantis’ law to punish Disney for speaking out against his anti-LGBTQ legislation hit a brick wall, reported Florida Politics publisher Peter Schorsch on Wednesday.

“President Trump wrote ‘Art of the Deal’ and brokered Middle East peace,” an unidentified Trump campaign staffer told Schorsch. “Ron DeSantis just got out-negotiated by Mickey Mouse.”

Hartfoud Courant, yesterday.

A reported occurrence under investigation by the Archdiocese of Hartford as a possible miracle at a Roman Catholic church in Thomaston has similarities to Jesus’ miracle of multiplying the loaves and fishes, which itself resonates with the Last Supper, according to the chaplain of Albertus Magnus College.

But while the reported increase in Communion hosts occurred at St. Thomas Church, where the Rev. Michael McGivney served, the possibility that it would be the miracle that will raise him to sainthood is not highly likely, the Rev. Jordan Lenaghan, a Dominican friar, said Tuesday.

On March 5, after Communion had been distributed, the Rev. Joseph Crowley, pastor of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, which includes St. Thomas, announced that, during the Mass, “one of our eucharistic ministers was running out of hosts and yet they didn’t, and suddenly there’s more hosts in the ciborium.

Doubly so when they insist upon using a fistful of coins as though they just went digging through their couch cushions just to make a food run. But when you sit there, digging in your change purse with one hand while a fistful of bills is in your other, I really wanna just reach across the desk and whap them upside the head.

About as ridiculous as the people staying in a hotel with full kitchens in every room insisting upon buying overpriced bottle water when they can get it from the tap for free. And before you say “But they might be from out of town…,” at least 2/3 of the folks staying here right now are locals who grew up with this water. Disney has one of the slickest law departments: they know every in and out and Disney can afford to hire the very best of the trade.

McCarthy’s up shit creek without a paddle and it’s been plainly obvious for weeks now.

Just like Bibi in Israel has to accommodate every fringe party to form a government, McCarthy has to bend to the Freedom Caucus, and they are severely limiting his options to basically: 1) blow up the government, 2) burn it down or 3) declare Civil War.

It really has all the feel of an authoritarian who totally overplayed his hand. Ron probably went into this figuring that once he made his threat to strip Disney of self-government, they’d cave and issue an apology as well as come groveling to him to “make amends.” When that failed, he pushed forward with the bill figuring that they’d change their minds they realized he wasn’t afraid of the possible public backlash of picking a fight with The Mouse. Once that didn’t happen, he told himself that once the board was in place and starting to cause them headaches, they’d change their tune and he could negotiate from a position of strength in forcing them to bend to his will.

Now? Now he’s gonna look like Putin, swearing up and down that everything is going well as he keeps feeding resources into the meat grinder in the desperate hope that there’s a “win” to be had somewhere at the end of all this. Perhaps he thinks he has more lawyers than Disney does and all he has to do is keep sending them in kamikaze attacks until Disney is too exhausted to put up a fight.

I have a credit card and an ATM card (not a debit card; my bank does not issue those). I don’t use the credit card for much locally.

Larger chain hotels and motels here do take credit cards. Hotels near the Interstate take them as well. Smaller hotels or motels here will take cash with a deposit.

My ATM card turned into a problem when my bank shut off everyone’s ATM cards and issued new ones while we were in Newfoundland. We had to get a cash advance on our credit card (ugh).

We also had a problem with our ATM card when we were in Massachusetts in 2015. It turned out all of the banks around Chicopee had changed to chip cards, and my bank didn’t issue those (they do now). We wound up driving to Longmeadow to find a bank which would accept magnetic stripe cards.

These could both be true. His lawyers were too accommodating to Mr. Weisselberg (because they were urging him to flip which would screw the Trump Organization). That doesn’t help Mr. Trump, so he orders his company to replace the lawyers to protect him.

The day after more than two dozen towns received what authorities say were hoax calls that reported school shooters inside area high schools, police departments continue to investigate.

On Tuesday, 28 Massachusetts communities received similar threats that began with calls to local police departments reporting violence occurring at high schools, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

Locally, there were swatting calls Tuesday morning at Algonquin Regional, Framingham, Franklin, Hudson, Medway and Milford high schools.

“Detectives will continue to work together with other law enforcement agencies, including the Mass. State Police and the FBI,” Milford police said in a statement.

It gives DeSantis the opportunity to shovel taxpayer money to GOP connected lawyers billing $800/hour to fight his culture war with Disney, so there’s that.

Except for Winnie the Pooh, that is public domain.

The characters of A. A. Milne’s 1926 classic Winnie the Pooh are free to use legally without repercussion. US copyright law means that works of authors are avalable to use either 70 years after the author’s death or 95 years after publication. In the case of Pooh, it is the latter.

That does not mean that every character is free to use. Characters introduced in follow-up books like The House at Pooh Corner cannot be used until 2023 which means Tigger, the jumping Tiger, will not appear in the film.

However, not all of the character is the public domain. Aspects of Pooh’s appearance like his red shirt remain trademarked by Disney, even if the character itself isn’t. This is due to differences in American law between trademark and copyright. Copyright can never be reintroduced but trademarks can be applied for and renewed.

NEAR RAYMOND, Minn. (Valley News Live) - People evacuated their homes as emergency crews deal with a train derailment and fire.

KARE-TV is reporting a BNSF train derailed along the western edge of Raymond, MN around 1 a.m. on Thursday, March 30.

Raymond is a small town in southwest Kandiyohi county, just southwest of Willmar.

The station is reporting several of the cars carried a form of ethanol and a corn syrup liquid that started on fire.

People living within a half mile of the derailment site were told to leave their homes.

As of this writing, emergency crews are still dealing with the situation.

Except where there is a region ban.

For some reason this copy of Nat Cole is blocked for me in the US but when I use a VPN (Norway in this case) I can play it:

Stardust

..

Cole’s Stardust is freely available in many copies on Youtube, but that one is blocked.

I found it from another video where it was being played (as part of a stereo demo.) The auto-filled Youtube embed called it the “SACD” version.

Oddly, in that video above Youtube credits The state51 Conspiracy as the provider… but that company on their own website and own Youtube channel just have their own recordings.

Just another example of how IP rights are a morass, a swamp in which the 21st century is sailing and likely sinking.

Greets and saluts from the suddenly cold and frosty NYC metro area. Here, we thought spring had sprung way back in January and February, but here came a cold snap this morning that was chilly (not super cold mind you, but when temps have been above average all year long, anything approaching normal feels cold).

We’ve got the usual assortment of things going on today - a derailment sparking evacuations, GOPers trying to end democracy and women’s rights, GOPers in a death spiral fighting to see which fascist leads the GOP going forward, and Fox continuing to prove that they knew Trump claims about the election were bulkshit, but they kept putting their propaganda numbers out there because they thought the base demanded it, instead of refuting all the toxic bulkshit because it was straight up lying to their viewers.

Dominion and Smartmatic should win this case, because IMO they’ve proven actual malice aforethought here. They show that Fox knew that they were defaming these companies, all to maintain their viewer numbers when they knew that the info they were spewing was straight up lies as per their internal memos, texts, calls, and other conversations. They even tried to fire the very people who’d speak out against the bogus information, because it would undermine their viewership and send people flocking to other media outlets spewing the same agitprop.

Disney CEO Bob Iger on Monday said his company will begin laying off staff starting this week, the first of three rounds of expected cuts following his announcement in February that the company would axe 7,000 jobs.

The cuts to Disney’s global workforce are part of a multibillion-dollar cost-cutting initiative aimed at streamlining the company’s operations in a period of media industry turmoil.

In a memo to staff obtained by CNN, Iger said the layoffs would come in three waves. The first round will begin this week, and managers will soon start to notify affected employees. A second, larger round of layoffs will take place in April, Iger said, with several thousand staffers let go. A third round of layoffs will then occur “before the beginning of the summer” to reach the company’s planned goal of eliminating 7,000 jobs.

It would take the equivalent of an “I am Reek” moment of capitulation from DeSantis for that to happen, true.

The Entire Cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Is Reuniting for Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Anime Series

At this point, should we call Scott Pilgrim vs. the World a classic? It came out thirteen years ago and is one of the quirkiest, most enjoyable comic book adaptations—due in considerable part to its excellent cast.

Now, that cast—yes, including Captains Marvel and America—is reuniting, in full, for an anime Scott Pilgrim series that has original Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley as one of its showrunners.

The show has been in development since January 2022, but only now is it officially ordered to series. O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski share showrunning, writing, and executive producing duties; Abel Gongora will direct; Science SARU provides the animation; and Edgar Wright, who directed and co-wrote the film, is also an executive producer.

Oh, I’m well aware of this. I’m a gamer; I have seen firsthand the impact of game companies kowtowing to the Chinese. In every instance, I think it is the wrong decision, even though it may be better financially. And in particular, a tech company pre-censoring the ability everywhere of their tool to create content that is objectionable in a specific country is not a good look. Now, if you want to disable that functionality in China, that’s fine (though now you get into the whole arcana of needing to keep up with and implement every local law in every country where your service could be used).

Which is pretty why in so many political thriller movies the “bad guy” is often cast as a smaller nation who real world military projection capability and footprint is often fairly close to nil. And how it’s pretty easy to see who the audience is expected to project the real menace to be. (And even more so in the books. Which are often as formulaic as romance novels.)

You don’t even have to go that far. According to the interwebz, there are ~90k public schools in the country. Let’s be real conservative and say each school has 5 entrances. That’s at least 450,000 armed security guards. (This, of course, assumes you have schools that are enclosed in a single building. Most schools in Phoenix, for example, are a grouping of several buildings, with numerous ways to get on to the campus). Who is paying for those security guards? Though in the case of the initial landings they were fighting Vichy French troops. (While hoping that the French would opt not to fight at all and that would allow early movement eastward into Tunisia to fight the Germans and Italians.)

And the WTF landings were to a degree a contingency plan since the Americans did not want all the landing inside the Straits of Gibraltar and wanted to establish a backup beachhead just in case. And the Vichy French naval presence in that area had to be neutralized in any case.

Who is footing the bill to train teachers and arm them?

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have been spotted enjoying views of Sydney from the city’s iconic Harbour Bridge.

The former president arrived in Sydney at the start of the week for a highly anticipated series of talks with former Australian foreign Minister Julie Bishop, the first of which was held before a sold-out crowd on Tuesday night in Darling Harbour.

According to BridgeClimb Sydney, tickets to scour the Australian landmark range from $268 to more than $400.

While guests on the Bridge climb are ordinarily ordered to wear jumpsuits and harnesses for safety reasons, the Obamas and their entourage were seen without either.

Tell me about. Planned on taking my youngest daughter to see her aunt and uncle in North Dakota on Tuesday. Thought to myself, I better check the forecast - MN is ok, I can handle a little rain; Fargo - damn; Bismarck - double damn and sugar. Now I’m scrambling to see if we can leave early afternoon Monday because I am not going to be driving through up to 5 inches of snow with winds from 20 to 30 mph.

Went about two weeks ago with the other daughter (different spring breaks). Blue sky above with 30 mph winds and an inch of snow overnight meant not being able to see the road farther than 20 feet ahead for at least 3 hundred of those miles.

That’s why fairings exist. I’ve taken a Junebug to the forehead, but never anything in the mouth.

re: #346 dat_said

Yeah, driving in high winds is dicey even without snow. Fishfolk are arriving shortly, and the rain will be coming in a little bit later. And then the fun starts.

I’m expecting a Trump/DeSantis ticket in 2024.

Don’t think their current squabbling is substantive. They are workers, deceivers of the dimwitted.

Not a chance. Trump won’t share the spotlight with anyone who speaks. DeSadist is too popular in his own right. Trump won’t ever, ever allow that.

I see it as a distant possibility, as the party establishment (who still have a role to play in the process) would like to groom DeSantis for 2028 and that would be the best way.

The GOP are going full Culture Wars and Family Values and Party of American Moral Renewal, etc., and who could be the better pos(t)er child for that than RDS?
