Trump’s Weekend at CPAC in 101 Seconds

Politics • Views: 11,936

I’m not the Lincoln Project’s biggest fan, but this video is a pretty disturbing look at just how impaired Donald Trump’s mental processes are — while mainstream media issues a continuing stream of articles about Joe Biden’s age.

Notice how the Newsmax shill at the end is quick to note that Newsmax doesn’t believe the 2020 election was rigged. That’s because they lost a big lawsuit; and that’s what it takes to get these right wing zombies to tell the truth.

re: #335 Nerdy Fish

Oh, my neighborhood lake is considerably larger than that. It’s almost a square mile, and 22’ deep. I’ve only seen a small part of it; like many Minnesota lakes, it’s in two parts, and the public boat launch is on the smaller segment.

Apparently, the MN DNR doesn’t publish data on ice out for my neighborhood lake and some of the other surrounding ones: dnr.state.mn.us. I’m going to blame Deep Water.

Looks like last year, ice out on the big lakes in the area was mid April and their earliest ice outs around April 1st. I suspect there will be a bunch of new “earliest” this year.

I suspect he’s having a devil of a time raising the money to appeal these decisions. He probably couldn’t get a bond for first Carroll judgement, hence the cash, and he’s probably finding it impossible to get bonds for the second Carroll judgement and the NY AG judgement, too.

The latter two represent some half a billion dollars - and despite his assertion under oath that he’s got about 400 million in cash on hand, I doubt he actually does have that much moolah in his couch cushions.

It seems to be well understood by anyone who isn’t MAGA that Trump’s financial wizardry that Trump’s liquid wealth is severely constrained. His ability to secure loans is greatly constrained, as is the ability to get a bond (even less of a chance to get a bond than many a low-life criminal).

And the Manhattan DA explicitly mentions the DC Court’s affirmation of the limited gag order that he’s seeking. He’s essentially asking for the same exact thing.

Bragg should get it because Trump is a fucking insurrectionist who is more than happy to get people to do his dirty work for him and undermine the rule of law at every turn.

Phil Plait:

Astronomers have found excellent evidence of a NEUTRON STAR at the center of the Supernova 1987A maelstrom!

This is A Big Deal™.

In late February 1987 — in fact, last week was the anniversary; the release of this news was well timed — the light from brightest supernova in four centuries reached Earth. Dubbed Supernova 1987A, or just 87A to its friends, it was actually spotted by astronomer Ian Shelton by naked eye! The stellar explosion occurred in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy very close to the Milky Way, just about 170,000 light-years away from the Sun.

@helenkennedy.bsky.social

Great stuff from @kfile.bsky.social: CNN reveals Kenneth Chesebro used a secret Twitter account to promote the fake elector plot even though he told Michigan investigators he never used Twitter. The secret Twitter account (first uncovered by @tpm.bsky.social) undercuts a bunch of other lies he told.
cnn.com

“…Asked about the secret tweets, Danny Wimmer, a spokesman for Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, said in a statement to CNN, “Our team is interested in the material and will be looking into this matter.”

“…just days after the 2020 election, BadgerPundit tweeted that the court battles didn’t matter and that Republican-controlled legislatures should send in their own GOP electors, predicting even then that then-Vice President Mike Pence could use them to throw the election to Trump.

“You don’t get the big picture. Trump doesn’t have to get courts to declare him the winner of the vote. He just needs to convince Republican legislatures that the election was systematically rigged, but it’s impossible to run it again, so they should appoint electors instead,” wrote BadgerPundit on November 7, 2020, the day multiple media outlets, including CNN, called the election for Joe Biden.

CL’ed from downstairs
re: #337 The Ghost of a Flea

I’m genuinely confused by this, because support for strongmen is a pretty consistent theme on the right; it’s been a standard position that dictatorships and military junta leaders and monarchs are preferable to a “Communism” that in practice amounted to most forms of Enlightenment liberalism.

Admiration of Putin is consistent with prior admiration of Pinochet and Franco, both of whom have been consistently lauded by conservatives.

Dictators that are marked as bad by conservatives are just the ones that don’t do what America wants; they’re not being condemned on general principle, but on the basis that they aren’t performing their desired function as speculums splitting open their nation for capital interests.

Welcome back, your voice is an important part of our weave, and I’ve missed that part of the tapestry while you were away or whatever.

I think you are correct here, and there are other a couple of other reasons I can think of as well:
Today’s GOP eyes Russia as a state run capitalist enterprise and Putin is their CEO; and there are a couple of generations now with swathes of people mostly ignorant of the excesses of last centuries communists and the fall out from the continual war of the fascists and communists in Europe & beyond.

I mean, the judge has to take the bullshit seriously. They don’t want to get the entire conviction overturned because they didn’t at least consider the possibility that there’s an actual legal argument underlying the oversimplified layman’s headline. With that said, I would expect their reply to be brief and something along the lines of, “Rules are rules, and the defendant should not be any exception to them.”

Trump seems to still be under the mischaracterization that the CPLR and state or federal law does not apply to him. Carroll’s lawyers will have a ready-made response for him. It doesn’t matter if you’re a billionaire or a guy off the street. You are obligated under state law to post bond or pay into the escrow the judgment amount. It doesn’t matter who the fuck you are.

There’s no Trump exception here. Not now or ever.

And there’s no law to support his claims either. Sanction his lawyers (again) for filing frivolous motions/actions.

a notice of appeal is the first step in filing an appeal. it’s similar to filing a complaint in the trial court. there are many other steps that come after this and before the actual filing of an appellate brief. also, as has been explained repeatedly: he does not have to secure a bond to take an appeal (requiring a defendant to file a bond to seek an appeal is a violation of due process), but if he fails to file a bond, the plaintiff could begin collections on the judgment (most likely they will have to be held in escrow in the even Trump wins on the appeal).

Dr Lizardo  Feb 26, 2024 • 12:33:43pm

re: #51 lawhawk

As always, Trump thinks he’s above the law.

Also, he most likely doesn’t have the money he needs to actually file the appeal (notice of intent to file an appeal is a different matter).

And I’d wager that if he doesn’t post the bond or deposit the necessary amount in escrow, and the NY AG starts seizing his properties, just you watch…he’s gonna ramp up his ceaseless whining that he’s the victim, and that it’s all so horribly unfair and un-American, yadda yadda yadda. He’ll play the martyr to his deluded base.

And of course, he also needs to get Lara in as RNC co-chair so she can start siphoning off that campaign money to his coffers…because he desperately needs that dough to pay his bills.

Off to bed - have a good one, Lizards and stay healthy.

re: #59 Dr Lizardo

Since Donald Trump owes 450MM+ USD in civil fines , there are really two schools of thought I’ve seen discussed on how to get the state and E. Jean Carroll fairly compensated.

1. Do a real assesment of his properties, find out how mortgaged they are, have the state declare the RealValue - MortgageOwed - Taxes owed on increase in value to be a credit against the amount Donnie owes , and take them until he owed $0. Then slowly sell off the properties so as to maximize the money it receives from anyone. This may keep him with _some_ money but it also maximizes the amount the state and Ms. Carroll get. It also keeps more money for the next round of civil and criminal penalties that _may_ be assessed.

2. Do a firesale. This will hurt Donnie the most, but will reduce the amount the state and Ms. Carroll receive, and also reduce the valuations of other New York property holders. It might also screw over any victims (people or governmental) whoses cases might come in the future.

Thoughts?

The defamation cases are in SDNY (before Judge Kaplan). The civil fraud case is in State Supreme Court. They have a similar form and requirements.

Bottom line. He’s got to make liquid nearly $500 million presently, because he’s going to lose these appeals on the law and the merits. Bond only delays that to an extent.

i dont know if there’s any requirement to consider other property holders.
maybe James / the state might have to.
carroll surely doesnt. she’s a private citizen judgment creditor

i think they both got what they wanted: unarguable mega-judgments.
i dont think it’s about getting all the money - it’s so damned much, even as it applies to NYS fines.

The court appointed monitor will need to weigh in on the options, and I believe the monitor will be obligated to preserve the assets of the business while following the law. That suggests they’d support option 1 above.

What was that quiet thing the Antiwar Left started doing ca. 2003 in place of applause? It wasn’t quite snapping, but a rapid and repeated opening and closing of the middle finger against the thumb.

I’m wondering if that’s the gesture the Atlantic writer means when he writes “snapping their fingers.”

the proposed Albertson’s/Kroger merger is absurd. The two companies already control most all of the supermarket industry at the national level - I think the only other companies with any sort of national presence would be Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart.

If anything Albertsons and Kroger should probably be broken up.

Navalny Allies Say He Was About to Be Freed

“Aides to Aleksei Navalny asserted on Monday that the Russian opposition leader had been on the verge of being freed in a prisoner exchange with the West before he died earlier this month,” the New York Times reports.

“Western officials were in advanced talks with the Kremlin on a deal that would have released Mr. Navalny along with two Americans in Russian prison, a top aide to the dead opposition leader, Maria Pevchikh, said in a video released on the Navalny team’s YouTube channel.”

There is inevitably a bifurcation that happens in worldviews and movements:
1) one part goes into extremism;
2) the other part morphs into a new form as it accepts the current state of affairs.

I suspect that here in the US we are still at the beginning of our dive into being fascist. As pressures mount in poorer countries the demands on US intervention, and mass migrations around the world and into the US, will make us act in ways that are ugly.

Generally not, though they can refuse to delivery certain items. Maybe they can only sell 5 and 10 pound ones.

I’ve decided to start having hard boiled eggs on hand for quick snack/meal. I’ve had success with using Martha Stewart’s method for cooking.

My question is about storage. Martha says to peel when warm and store in air tight container because warm eggs are easier to peel than cold ones.

For me, the beauty of a hard boiled egg is that it already has a storage container but am willing to store peeled if it makes a big difference.

the proposed Albertson’s/Kroger merger is absurd. The two companies already control most all of the supermarket industry at the national level - I think the only other companies with any sort of national presence would be Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart.

If anything Albertsons and Kroger should probably be broken up.

When I moved to Los Angeles 42 years ago there were 10 major supermarket chains. Eventually Either Kroger (Ralphs) or Safeway(Albertson/Vons) gobbled the competitors up to now they are the only major grocery chains here.

my method

i steam them

Add 1 inch of water to pot
Place an old fashioned vegetable steamer basket inside
boil the water
Add eggs to basket, cover
Remove soft boiled at 6 min and plunge in an ice bath to stop cooking
or continue cooking hard boiled for a total of 12 minutes.
then i just run cold water into the pot
i put them in a bowl and into the fridge
they last a week or so
they still peel easy

Go to Cook’s Illustrated and check out how they cook them. It is usually put the eggs into an empty pot then fill up with water, bring it to a boil, and then put the cover on and turn down the heat (or turn it off). After 10 minutes put the eggs into an ice bath to chill and then peel them. They should turn out with a nice moist yolk with no ring around the yolk.

That’s really similar to the Martha Stewart method except she recommends they cook for 12 minutes. That seems like a big difference. Growing up, the hard boiled eggs I encounters had pretty crumbly yokes. Maybe I’ve been cooking them too long.

I think I’m going to try your method and see how I like a moist yolk.

I cook them in a very similar manner. I store them in the shell and peel them as I want to eat them. After the post-cooking cold water soak to cool them I pat them dry with a paper towel and store them in an egg carton that I have labeled to hold hard-boiled eggs.

The method I always use is to put the eggs into just enough water to cover (to minimize boiling time), bring to a boil, and cook at a rolling boil for 7 minutes, then turn off the heat and let sit for 7 minutes, then plunge into cold (preferably iced) water.
Supposedly the “shock” of the cold water affects the shell membrane which makes the eggs easier to peel.
This timing seems to avoid overcooking/gray rings.

Current world stuff I am following:

1. The Houthis/IRGC may have taken out 4 major Red Sea cables connecting Asia to Europe. I have not yet seen major news organizations mention it. But there are some other sources, who are not obvious misinformation cutouts, who have.

2. There have been reports that TransNistra was going to declare independence from Moldavia at the end of February. This may have been a test balloon by the gangsters… er… businessmen that are running the enclave. My guess is that it is not going to go very far.

3. I saw a report that some drones from TransNistra attacked sites in Western Ukraine. I have not seen any credible reporting on this.

4. Hezbollah was rocketing Northern Israel. In return Israel took out a Hezbollah base in Baalbek. Hezbollah, in retaliation, is rocketing Northern Israel.

5. The US has pressured the Palestinian Authority (West Bank) leadership to resign. The presumed reason is that the PA governance is widely considered corrupt and ineffective. I suspect that this is part of a US effort to install an effective caretaker replacement in Gaza.

i noticed they’re a little easier, but not a lot
i’m not sure there’s a big difference
and i have no idea why. it could all be in my head

here’s how i used to do it:

1 layer of eggs in a pot
add water + 1 inch to cover
Boil
as soon is it boils, remove from heat and cover
Wait 7 min
Cold water rinse

these also come out perfect every time

Dye with beets and you also get pickled beets

I grew up with purple pickled eggs. See them, not so much eating them. The first time I saw a jar of white pickled eggs as a kid (IIRC, it was sitting on the counter in a gas station in the south), my mom had to tell me that they were in fact pickled eggs. I couldn’t get my kid-brain around the fact that they weren’t purple.

And meanwhile, a story about a different kind of New Yorker. (a wonderful story)

Students at a medical school in the Bronx will no longer pay tuition after it received a $1 billion donation, the college said Monday. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine received the donation from Ruth Gottesman, the chair of its board of trustees. It marked the largest gift to any medical school in the country.

washingtonpost.com

From her wiki page:

She married David Gottesman in 1950.They met in 1948 before she began her studies at Mount Holyoke College and remained married for 72 years until his death in 2022. Together, they had three children. They lived in Rye, New York.Forbes valued David’s estate at $3 billion at the time of his death.

With her husband David, she donated $25 million to AECOM in 2008, which was used to found the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research, the Ruth L. Gottesman Clinical Skills Center and the Faculty Scholar in Epigenetics at AECOM.

When David died in 2022, he bequeathed a portfolio of stock in Berkshire Hathaway to Ruth, with the instructions for her to do with it as she pleased. Wanting to support education, Gottesman announced a $1 billion gift to AECOM in February 2024 to provide free tuition to its students in perpetuity.

The attempt at hard boiled eggs continues to be a disaster.

The eggs were next to impossible to peel and tasted over cooked. If my unsophisticated palette recognizes they’re overcooked, they’re hammered.

There goes six eggs.

I saved the other six for attempt #2. Not sure I have another attempt in me today.

Lesson learned, pick a cooking method and be more careful with the instructions (I can’t quite bring myself to say there is a recipe for cooking a hard boiled egg).

I would like to know how hungry the person was who discovered this.

Born from a muddy pool of water, the succulent century egg has endured as a comfort food for hundreds of years.

Hundreds of years ago, a savoury idea - called the century egg - was hatched in rural China. As the story goes, a farmer found naturally preserved duck eggs in a muddy pool of water and slaked lime (a type of calcium hydroxide). After surviving a tasting, he set out to replicate them manually, resulting in a delicacy that would endure for centuries as a comfort food in Hong Kong, China and parts of Southeast Asia.
Though details of the century egg’s discovery are undocumented, scientists estimate that it dates back more than 500 years to the Ming Dynasty. And aside from some techniques used for large-scale production today, the egg preservation process has remained relatively unchanged.
To make the eggs, a vat is typically filled with a combination of strong black tea, lime, salt and freshly burned wood ashes, and is left to cool overnight. The next day, duck, quail or chicken eggs are added to the mixture, and they soak anywhere from seven weeks to five months - not for a century as the name implies.

Question for the lizard collective.

What say you hard-boiled egg eaters?

I buy them already cooked and peeled from the store because peeling eggs winds up with fractional amounts of egg and way too much frustration.

Recent egg news!

Researchers have cracked one of the mysteries hidden within a Roman egg, discovering that it still contains its liquid almost two millennia after it was first laid.

“This is the oldest unintentionally preserved avian egg I have ever seen,” Douglas G.D Russell, senior curator of birds’ eggs and nests at the Natural History Museum (NHM), who was consulted about best preserving the ancient egg, told CNN in a statement Monday. “That makes it fascinating.”

He pointed out that there are older eggs with their contents still inside them, like a series of mummified eggs at the NHM, probably excavated in Egypt in 1898, but no other known examples of naturally preserved eggs that are this old.

The egg was first discovered in 2010 alongside three others in Aylesbury, England - about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of London - during an excavation conducted by charity Oxford Archaeology, Edward Biddulph, senior project manager at Oxford Archaeology, told CNN Monday.

Pottery and other finds uncovered alongside the egg were dated to the late 3rd century AD, allowing archaeologists to estimate its age too, Biddulph added.

Tim Gunn on why fashion competition shows are better than cooking competition shows:

You can’t smell what they’re making. You can’t taste it. You can’t stick a fork in it to check the consistency. How are you supposed to know if you’d like it, how do you assess whether the judges share your aesthetic?

But Project Runway… You see what we see. Your opinion of the garment, and of the judges, is based on the same evidence as our opinions.
