NATO Airstrike Kills Qaddafi’s Son

The Colonel barely escapes
Middle East • Views: 35,650

A NATO airstrike has reportedly killed Colonel Qaddafi’s youngest son, and barely missed the Colonel himself.

Colonel Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa which was hit by the strike, the spokesman added, but was unharmed.

His son Saif al-Arab was killed, as well as three of his grandsons.

Journalists say the building was extensively damaged and one unexploded bomb remains at the site.

Saif al-Arab was the youngest of Col Gaddafi’s six sons, with a lower profile than his brother Saif al-Islam.

Some pictures are now being released and at the moment there is one with this article. How this might play in the Muslim world: NATO targets children to try and get Qaddafi. Even if this was done by the French or British in order to see that Qaddafi had entered the house did it involve US surveillance or British ground (SAS) forces? This story is not going to get better for NATO. It is going to become a propaganda disaster. In order to ”save civilians” NATO must kill children? Try ‘splainin’ that one.

so NATO is overtly trying to kill Mo…and for sure there are teams in place working together to kill him directly or via contractors…if the very best of US and British people are on this, Mo is doomed….he will get boxed in then poof!

The attack resulted in the martyrdom of brother Saif al-Arab Muammar Gaddafi, 29 years old, and three of the leader’s grandchildren,” he said

“How is this helping in the protection of civilians? Mr Saif al-Arab was a civilian, a student… He was playing and talking to his father and mother and his nieces and nephews and other visitors when he was attacked and killed for no crime he committed.”

If the bolded statement is true, why is Daffy walking amongst us?

That happens quite a bit in that part of the world, and no, it certainly doesn’t give him a pass. But NATO’s actions won’t endear us to the Islamic world. And when it comes right down to it we’re fighting Libya’s civil war for them.

Somewhat. I have been a bit more sanguine about the story last week that the Brits and the French are sending military advisers to help the rebels. That ended being pretty effective in helping the Bosnians in their fight to drive out the Serbs 15 years ago or so. (We sent private contrators to train the Bosnian Army.)

They do need the aircover, although I would rather that NATO not try to do the assassination type thing they seem intent on. Let the Rebels deal with him after they have been shown how to actually use their weapons. (Maybe we ought to be sending them those out of date M-60A3 tanks we still have around. We don’t even need to show how the turret stabilization works…just how to load, drive, basic field maintenance and how use the main gun and the machine guns.)

It’s tragic that children were killed. It’s even sadder that Gadaffi has relentlessly and indiscriminately murdered children with no remorse, not to mention anyone else who doesn’t bow to him. How many thousands, so far? Yesterday his men were laying mines to prevent food and medical supplies from entering Misrata. I’m hoping this was close enough to scare him into leaving, to save his own neck. Lord knows he doesn’t care about anything else. No sympathy here.

re: #2 Girl with a Pearl Earring

Okay realistically you are correct, I get it. But “it” frustrates me. The double standard just reeks. When Mo’s regime terrorizes a family over some transgression or crime by a family member, where is the outrage? Out west, the western press, the UN, that’s it, if anything at all. From the middle east heads of state we get crickets.

So our enemies are able to and assisted by hiding in and among civilians. Why? How? Because the public perception allows it. I have heard Reagan killed his daughter in the F-111 air attacks. I also heard he adopted the girl after the bombing. Maybe true maybe not. But it fits.

This is exactly the kind of manufactured catch-22 that distorts the whole Israeli/Palestinian thing.

I can’t believe NATO would not rescue the kids.

Not if the COC does not allow it. Who’s the COC in Libya? A psychotic idiot?

re: #2 Girl with a Pearl Earring

Some pictures are now being released and at the moment there is one with this article. How this might play in the Muslim world: NATO targets children to try and get Qaddafi. Even if this was done by the French or British in order to see that Qaddafi had entered the house did it involve US surveillance or British ground (SAS) forces? This story is not going to get better for NATO. It is going to become a propaganda disaster. In order to ”save civilians” NATO must kill children? Try ‘splainin’ that one.

[Link: www.msnbc.msn.com…]

Disagree strongly. Gaddafi hide military assets near his kids. His son’s death is on his head.

“War is cruelty, you cannot refine it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.” - Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman

re: #97 WindUpBird

sounds racial, but I dunno

I cant keep up with all the dogwhistles about Obama’s race, they don’t even outrage me anymore

On that note:

A new era of innuendo

President Barack Obama’s appearance Wednesday in the White House briefing room to present a documented rebuttal of suspicions that he was not born on U.S. soil was more than just a surprise. It was a decisive new turn in the centuries-long American history of political accusation and innuendo.

By directly and coolly engaging a debate with his most fevered critics, Obama offered the most unmistakable validation ever to the idea that we are living in an era of public life with no referee — and no common understandings between fair and unfair, between relevant and trivial, or even between facts and fantasy.

Lurid conspiracy theories have followed presidents for as long as the office has existed. Yet even Obama’s most recent predecessors benefited from a widespread consensus that some types of personal allegations had no place in public debate unless or until they received some imprimatur of legitimacy — from an official investigation, for instance, or from a detailed report by a major news organization.

“There are no more arbiters of truth,” said former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. “So whatever you can prove factually, somebody else can find something else and point to it with enough ferocity to get people to believe it. We’ve crossed some Rubicon into the unknown.”

It’s hard to imagine Bill Clinton coming out to the White House briefing room to present evidence showing why people who thought he helped plot the murder of aide Vincent Foster— never mind official rulings of suicide — were wrong. George W. Bush, likewise, was never tempted to take to the Rose Garden to deny allegations from voices on the liberal fringe who believed that he knew about the Sept. 11 attacks ahead of time and chose to let them happen.

Obama did something like the equivalent of this, by releasing complete documentation from his Hawaii birth, then making a sober West Wing appearance to explain himself.

He did so, senior Obama advisers say, because of the radical reordering of the political-media universe over the past 15 years, or so. The decline of traditional media and the rise of viral emails and partisan Web and cable TV platforms has meant the near-collapse of common facts, believed across the political spectrum.

It did not matter that news organizations had debunked the notion that Obama was born overseas (which would have made him constitutionally ineligible for the presidency). Polls showed a startling percentage of Americans still either believed the myth or were unconvinced.

In response, Obama tried to ignore the issue, or tried to shame commentators who took it seriously. Or he tried to make fun of the whole fuss, by cueing up a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” to mark his appearance at the Gridiron Dinner last month.

On Wednesday, he finally gave in and affirmed a new truth of politics in the Internet era: Nothing can be dismissed and anything that poses a political threat must be confronted directly.

The problem is there’s no solution to this problem, or at least no quick or easy one. The enormous expansion of media outlets means that the gatekeepers who once kept the loons in check are gone and will not return. Nothing to do but fort up and wait for the barbarians to burn themselves out. A new equilibrium will be reached in time, but it cannot be forced.

I’m very upset at Drudge.

His choice of images is almost subliminal.

If its a sexual reference its despicable. The president has never had a wiff of any sexual impropriety. It make such refers is dishonorable. But Matt Drude has never had honor.

His choice of images is almost subliminal.

That’s why he’s a genius. He can guide the entire country’s attitudes with something a simple as an image and one line at the top of his html

Complaining about the genius is starting to become fruitless. He’s inctedibly smart, knows exactly what he’s doing. Knows how to craft a juicy link that goes to some Christian extremist site. But it’s nestled againstthe real news.

Research, I don’t know how the strawberry used as a sexually metaphor would have any meaning. What is the meaning? Or am I just being incredibly dense.

Images of earing strawberry’s are associated with women, usually with a sexual connotation

Drudge is impugning Obama’s masculinity IMO.

I’m serious about that. Those who dislike Obama will be encouraged to see him as less than manly, less than effective.

To use the image in the context of ‘eating the press’ is in my opinion, highly offensive.

honor is for suckers if you’re as powerful as drudge

do rock stars care about honor?

Led Zeppelin you’s to have groupies at the edgewater hotel in Seattle, well they’d catch all these sturgeon out the windows, because it’s on the Sound. And then toss all the funrityre into the water too, including a whole $20,000 fridge full of expensive champagne

and then just hang the rotting fish in the closet for the maid to find, all these fish

There were also groupies who well, look it up. the70’s were a hell of a time for gorupies

That’s “honor”. To power, honor ain’t much. Power may corrupt, but really a guy like drudge wasn’t corrupted, he saw an angle, he just treets the news like a toy, a joy buzzer

Drudge probably doesn’t even VOTE. If I had that much power to shape the news, I’d probably do it for nicer ends! But I’d still do it

It’s a bit of a Catch-22. If Obama goes to correspondent’s dinners and swans around being social and playing golf, it means he’s not sufficiently aware of the the responsibilities of office, and has no substance.

If he spent twenty hours a day working his ass off at his desk in the Oval Office, of course, that would mean he was overwhelmed. Either way, he’s not qualified for the position.

His ego is too vast to tolerate mockery. In that he is far worse at this sort of event than George W. Bush, who was frequently roasted at this event but always smiled and kept good cheer. The roasting wounded Bush not at all, but Trump will come out looking like an asshole.

This looks like the US is involved in the assassination of heads of state- that we are targeting Gaddafi. I’m not sure I agree with this. Exec Order 12333 prohibiting assassination had some sense to it.

I also don’t understand the comments that suggest Gaddafi should not be near his family during the war. While I think it’s reckless, I don’t think he expected to be targeted by NATO. We are in three wars, but we don’t expect the President to live apart from his family. And we would be rightly horrified by any attack on the Presidential family, even one that targeted the President.

Whatever advantages we claim for our efforts will be reasonably claimed by those we fight. In fact, we actually sanction such tactics when we use them. The targeting and assassination of a head of state crosses a dangerous line.

Although, I suppose if the President can still authorize the killing of American citizens without trial and regardless of their proximity to a battlefield (which is still my understanding), perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised that the US will become involved in the assassinations of heads of state. When we have surrendered due process for ourselves, why would we give anything like it to our enemies?

In this case the semantics are important. The killing of military officers is often thought of as part of a military operation.

We are in a conflict with the military forces of Libya. Now, the word “war” isn’t used, but then again for the past 50 years we’ve avoided that term (legally), so since Korea on we’ve come up with creative names for military actions.

I’m convinced that the prohibition against US Presidents trying to assassinate foreign leaders doesn’t apply for military operations. It’s intention, the spirit of the law if you will, was to prevent things like Kennedy going after Castro with hired guns, etc.

1. I don’t know what the law on this matter is, precisely, but I will say that as far as I’m concerned, anyone who wants to kill Gaddafi can do so, and I will sleep soundly. I’m prepared to engage in a discussion of the legal ramifications. Ethically, I’m not bothered.

2. He knew damn well he’d be targeted by NATO, and if by some chance he didn’t, he knew damn well the rebels would be coming after his ass. He made a tactical decision there. Also, even if this was illegal, I’m willing to take this (relatively) minor illegality in order to prevent and stop War Crimes.

In Qaddafi’s case, I think it has been made clear. The Coalition will hunt him down. And if the rebels catch him instead, he will wish that we had killed him in a bombing instead.

I won’t get into a debate on words with you, but I would say that Qaddafi is seen as the leader of the country.
There has been no permission to go after Qaddafi directly.
If that was the aim of the attack I can not see why it would not be a war crime.

Because deliberately targeting the enemy’s command structure is not a war crime. It might violate laws against assassinations, but that does not make it a war crime.

2. He knew damn well he’d be targeted by NATO, and if by some chance he didn’t, he knew damn well the rebels would be coming after his ass. He made a tactical decision there. Not because there is some special Middle Eastern madness there—Magda Goebbels always comes to mind when people get going on how Western it is to protect children—but because he is a cold, calculating SOB.

If Barry and company thinks that they’ve humiliated and silenced The Donald, they are in for a rude awakening.

It’s really not a good look to use the bully pulpit to bash Trump–even if he deserves it. It’s basically saying that anyone who challenges the President will face public humiliation.

This also tells how much damage Trump really did to Obama.

Tonight’s thrashing and Trump’s humorless reaction surely hurts his already dismal chance at winning the election but the base thinks this is a big win. It might even be a conscious Dem Strategy to pit Obama against Trump, this is the race they would most like to have.

I don’t think we can predict what will happen with Trump after this. It’s 50/50. One of the thing I have noticed about the far right is that the more a person they like is made fun of or maligned the more they like the person or at least until someone else comes along to take their place. First Palin, than Bachmann and now Trump is the flavor of the month. I saw Laura Ingram defending Donald Trump on the O’Reilly Factor, not because he’s a conservative or has any chance of winning, but because he drives liberals crazy. I heard Ann Coulter say the same thing about Palin. As long as driving liberals crazy is the primary prerequisite for the far right, anybody who does will remain in high regard with them. If past is prologue Trump is still a star for the GOP base.

No, the mandate was for necessary measures to protect civilians, and a no-fly-zone, also an arms embargo. It’s very loosely worded. NATO currently considers strikes on Gadaffi’s military structure to fall within the rubric of protecting civilians.

Let me be clear: if this was out of legal bounds, that’s bad, and it’s an issue. NATO has made it clear that they intend to continue hitting command centers. They have stated that they did not intentionally target Gaddafi and his family.

But Gaddafi was not sitting in Tripoli surrounded by family thinking ‘lalala, they aren’t allowed to drop bombs on Tripoli, I trust the UN on this’.

Well, if you want to go down that route I doubt you’ll get far.

Since Col. Qaddafi is not just the nominal but the real commanding officer of the forces against which we are fighting, in alliance with the rebel forces in this civil war, he is targeted.

Is it “legal”? Well, that’s a difficult question that depends upon whose law you want to enforce (and indeed this is one of the weaknesses of so called “international law”.) Do you want to impeach Obama since the Congress did not explicitly authorize the targeting of military leaders? Or perhaps do you think there is some violation of the Geneva Convention?

It’s so nice your dad found someone! I was gonna say that men of that age group have to move on quickly, but women do too. It’s hard to live with someone for so long and then be alone. It ain’t natural either :>

My mom’s been trying for a b/f for awhile. She’s an elderly person, but the odds are against her. Women outlive men so the pickins’ are about 10 to 1 in favor of the guys in that age group.

Indeed. Prior to the show starting, CSPAN had clips of past dinners. One in 2006, where Bush stood next to one of his top impersonators and did the act with him. He poked fun at himself for his speech faux pauxs, his mannerisms. It was all in good fun.

I can’t for the life of me ever expect that sort of thing from the Donald.

From Charle’s lead story:

Colonel Gaddafi himself was in the large residential villa which was hit by the strike, the spokesman added, but was unharmed.

Saif al-Arab, who had a lower profile than his brother Saif al-Islam, had been studying in Germany and returned to Libya recently.

“How is this helping in the protection of civilians? Mr Saif al-Arab was a civilian, a student… He was playing and talking to his father and mother and his nieces and nephews and other visitors when he was attacked and killed for no crime he committed.”

I wouldn’t be surprised. A house owned by the family, currently used by the son, and also housing goverment and military operations. Arafat had a defensible compound that was used as both a home and a command center. (I believe Suha and the little girl, however, lived in Paris).

Or, it could be that a strictly residential home was destroyed when a nearby building in military use was hit.

Or, NATO could be lying, and it could actually be a targeted strike at Qaddafi.

My bet is currently on No. 1.

Gaddafi son dies in missile strike

00:05, May 1 2011

Muammar Gaddafi’s youngest son has been killed in a Nato missile strike on his house, a Libyan government spokesman said.

Muammar Gaddafi and his wife were in the Tripoli house of his 29-year-old son Saif al-Arab Gaddafi when it was hit by at least one missile fired by a Nato plane, according to Libyan spokesman Moussa Ibrahim.

The one-story house in a Tripoli residential neighbourhood was heavily damaged.

Saif al-Arab Gaddafi was the sixth son of Gaddafi.

He had spent much of his time in Germany in recent years.

He is responsible for the deaths of thousands of his own countrymen, has stolen the wealth of his nation and has underwritten terrorism around the world.

The Libyans did not initiate this uprising because he is profoundly loved.

We are not talking about the Belgian Prime Minister. Everyday he is left in power endangers the lives of innocents.

The Libyans started this uprising and asked for our help. Ridding the world of Gaddafi is a most moral endeavor.

Why people in Libya hate Gaddafi ? by : Dr.Hamza Mousa !

…Gaddafi tried to make his own version of Communism , which turned out , he wanted it Communism for the people and , Capitalism for his family and his own men ,the past 10 years turns out , his own sons own the 2 cellular phone companies , Hotels , and have investments all over the world .

Gaddafi , started dealing with the peaceful protest with live bullets , he was heating up , because he realized he need to kill the idea before it spreads to other cities , also he know that if the people in Libya tasted freedom they will never let him back again .

Freedom is priceless , soon as people got , tasted it , they decided they have to see justice for what Gaddafi and his gang did in Libya for more than 40 years , for every blood shed , for every prisoner killed in Abosleem , for every abusing by Gaddafi and his gang did .

Gaddafi puts his hand in almost everything , even people’s hearts , sometimes to squeeze , with anger and sadness , Walking in streets in Libya before the revolution , all signs , are for him , his statements in the green book .

Libyans believes they had suffered enough from Gaddafi , his actions , they held his responsible for killing their sons , stealing their countries , stealing their own money , but they also believe he is the responsible about putting Libya as terrorist country as he supports war criminals in many countries…

A peach, ripened on the tree (not the artificial stuff pushed in stores), can give a loquat a run for the money. As can truly tree ripened plums (again, not available in stores) - I remember when I was young some relatives had a red plum tree and every summer I’d be there picking them off the tree. Scrumptious.

But the loquat has a better aftertaste, and even more importantly does what neither of the two fruit above can - enhance the flavor of the chocolate chaser.

Libya disabled children school hit in NATO strike
By Lin Noueihed

TRIPOLI, April 30 (Reuters) - Shattered glass litters the carpet at the Libyan Down’s Syndrome Society, and dust covers pictures of grinning children that adorn the hallway, thrown into darkness by a NATO strike early on Saturday.

It was unclear what the target of the strike was, though Libyan officials said it was Muammar Gaddafi himself, who was giving a live television address at the time.

“They maybe wanted to hit the television. This is a non-military, non-governmental building,” said Mohammed al-Mehdi, head of the civil societies council, which licenses and oversees civil groups in Libya…

Luckily the school was empty at the time. However, why in the world was a school for children with downs syndrome targeted?

We did that. Innovated it I mean.

But her outfit and hair tonight…Good Grief, she’s really outdone herself in the “Why would anybody go out in public looking like that?” department.

FLOTUS is definitely no Nancy Regan, that’s for sure.

Qadhafi encouraging mass rape: U.S. official

A top United States official has alleged that Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Qadhafi supplied Viagra, a drug to treat sexual impotence, to his forces to encourage them to commit mass rape.

Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, reportedly brought up the Viagra issue “during a discussion about whether there is moral equivalence between the Qadhafi forces and the rebels”.

Media reports said her statements were based on claims by the Al Jazeera news channel last month that “Libya-based doctors… had found Viagra in the pockets of pro-Qadhafi soldiers”.

What an evil SOB. I hope the next NATO blast squishes this insect.

With all due deference, and being quite sure that rape is widespread in the fighting zone, I am calling shenanigans on that one. Too pat, too anecdotal, too rumor-based, and I’m supposed to believe that Gaddafi is wasting time handing out Viagra to all those lawless mercs who can’t get it up? Seriously?

And, frankly, since the Magical Balance Fairy is my good friend, I’m going to wait on more confirmation about the school for little children with Down syndrome. I’ve heard a few of those stories come out of Jenin and Gaza in my day, and they tend to wither in the light of day.

If he was “just” an attention whore then attention would be enough he’d have been happy at the dinner, but he feeds on constant, obsequious praise. His catch phrase is “you’re fired” because it allows him to be in control of the rejection. He’s terrified of being rejected himself. A situation like this where he has to sit there and is incapable of laughing but can’t lash out either must be pure torture for him.

What I would really like to see are missions that had a clear end plan and an exit strategy.
To keep troops as safe as possible, and ‘there’ for the shortest time possible.
To look after veterans better than we do, with more financial, social and health support that they receive.

that is the opposite of America

warprofiteers want open ended conflicts

If there is a big question as to whether it’s true or not, Susan Rice should STFU about it.

Susan Rice and her Brit and French counterparts at the UN are trying to justify our continued participation in a foreign civil war by vilifying the opponent. Qaddafi’s been a known carbuncle on the backside of humanity for decades and nothing was done. Why the sudden overwhelming desire to kill him now?

Rice is smart enough to know that stories like that will keep Code Pink quieter.

The school was probably hit by a NATO bomb, but obviously by mistake. The Libyans actually may have wired it up with something that would attract attention for a day or two. They aren’t stupid.

Disagree strongly. Gaddafi hide military assets near his kids. His son’s death is on his head.

Yes it is. But that’s not how it will play for a lot of Muslims.

And bombing a private residence is not a good idea, regardless. If intel assets saw Mo and wife enter the home, they surely knew there were other people there also. Might those 3 kids have grown up to be jerks or evil bastards? Perhaps. But they were still 3 little kids.

And we still have no clue if there really were “military assets” in that home or not.
