Hrm, is it better to comfort a slave and appeal to the slave driver’s humanity in the hope that their suffering is at least slightly diminished, or is it better to catfish them, thus giving them less time to scam the innocent?

patreon.com

Freethoughblogs and PZ Meyers main blog are no longer accessible because someone complained to the domain registrar with an unsubstantiated claim. Without checking, the registrar removed them from the database and has so far refused to reinstate them

This is worrisome. That a single unverified complaint can bring down a progessive scientific web site.

Donald Trump has been found to have fraudulently boosted the value of Scottish homes by up to £200 million. A judge’s civil fraud case revealed that the Trump Organization had valued a 2,500-home development at £83,164, significantly lower than the actual value[1]. The fraudulent methods used by the Trump Organization included inflating property values and using false numbers in property valuations[2][3]. As a result of this fraudulent activity, Donald Trump has been ordered to pay over $350 million in damages in a civil fraud case, with potential interest charges adding another $100 million[4]. Despite denying committing fraud, Mr. Trump is facing significant financial consequences and legal restrictions as a result of these findings[5].

Hoot mon!
So “2500 homes” at that value comes out to each “home” being valued at all of £33.26 each.

The structures and mechanics of that just aren’t there. Worst case could be a lot of chaos, perhaps with crime rising to the level of guerilla bands. We would settle into a situation like occupied France, but with no one to mount Operation Overlord. Then we all get to find out how brave we are.

IMHO, Its a lunatic’s fever dream so let them play and fanaticize . The US is just too large in population and size for this to work. We know from previous efforts how many troops it takes to pacify and subdue a population. Even if they could get every member of the entire National Guard and all the soldiers from around the world to follow their orders (something I find very unlikely), they would only have enough people to pacify California. After tremendous loss of life. If they somehow deputized every LEO in the US, they could perhas pacify NY. Then there is no one left over for anywhere else. Like Texas and Florida that have more Democrats than NY.

And that asssumes they could overcome the huge logistical problems of moving soldiers and material across the country from so many locations, all against active efforts to stop them. That would likely take a genius and take a large amount of time (It took us 6 months to get into Iraq for the First War, with a much smaller and less populated foe) I simply do believe they have the mind power to be successful at this.

Doesn’t mean they won’t try and kill some people. But I worry that it is more likely they will do much more harm with indirect, political means - such as replacing all the civil servants with cronies, cutting SS and Medicare, forcing women to have children, removing contraceptions from the marketplace, etc. Cutting off all federal funding to Blue states, not seating house members from blue states, etc.

There are 23,000 in Texas that are part of their military forces. That simply is not enough to subdue much of America. At the counterinsurgency ratio that is the minimum seen historically for success of 20 soldiers to 1000 civilians, this would let the subdue a population of about 1 million. Biden received 5 million votes in 2020.

They will maybe have enough to hold Austin. But nowhere near enough to hold any other major city. And they will not have the materiel and ammo to accomplish much.

Because there will be a strong counterinsurgency.

When Trump faces large scale mutiny, sabotage and desertion from established
forces, he is likely to respond by deputizing large masses of armed MAGAts. Besides existing gangs like the Proud Boys, the NRA and Evangelical church networks could help provide an ad hoc organizational framework of sorts. These could be called something like the “Freedom Guard.” This was the name of the 20th Century Confederacy’s SS-style party militia in Harry Turtledove’s Timeline 191 alternate history series.
The MAGAt forces wouldn’t really stand a chance, but they are so arrogant and delusional that it will take massive losses to convince them of that. Among other things, their reflexive rejection of legitimate media will cause them to ignore reports of defeat and loss until they see it with their own eyes.

THe logistics of moving a rowdy, untrained group of thugs around are mind-boggling. How do they get fed? How many types of ammo will have to be somehow made and distributed because they all have different weapons? Will they just drive their own cars to the battles? Will they be reimbursed for their expenses?

ANd finally, how will their leaders prevent them from bolting at the first battle with the counterinsurgents?

Depends on your definition, especially since I included “Yes, it will be worse.”

I think, personally, another thing we fail to do here is take into account what other people have gone through. I’ve gone for three days without food, which torpedoed my first attempt at college, a psychological nightmare I didn’t get through until the end of my Navy time, a one point which I almost killed myself.

So, yes, the upcoming shit will be horrible if he wins, but I’m not going to sit here and doom out a scenario in place of continuing to make sure people are motivated to vote and get others to vote. If doom motivates you, go right ahead, but it doesn’t me and I have seen it paralyze others.

Look to medieval times…those same questions asked at the time, the answers are not pleasant.

Quite true. They won’t be able to move far from their homes so we won’t see anything resembling a concerted, strategic offensive. The Evangelical gun churches are especially prevalent, even in blue states, though. We could see very widespread, and extreme, violence in many areas. This would be especially true in places with MAGA-friendly law enforcement. This is why it is important to be prepared for individual and, if possible, community self defense. The difference between this objective and the MAGAT’s grandiose power fantasies will be another advantage for counter-insurgent forces: Community defense goals are achievable with the available resources, MAGAT goals are not.

Our military is not going to be part of an unconstitutional coup. Its doctrine and training keeps it from ever wanting to. Even if it did, it cannot sustain itself without top-down reserve activation. The design of the force, since Viet Nam, has been deliberately organized to break down regional and class differences—that’s the Powell Doctrine. Any large scale operation marries Active Duty, National Guard, and US Army Reserve into predetermined, interdependent, combatant commands.
This was done to prevent the “disinvolvement” that led to the 1960s anti-war movement, but it also makes a War Between the States impossible. A bizzaro President can do a lot of harm, but a bizzaro Commander in Chief will find he has nothing to command.

Oh, I expect they will do what the Russians do and shoot anyone bolting. But moving large groups of soldiers across the US will be even harder and more damaging than Napoleon attacking Moscow. Just getting to California will be very hard. Logistics are critical for modern warfare based on fossil fuel based weaponry.

Well, today I had a “Girl’s Day” with my 14 year old granddaughter. We walked on the beach, then we had lunch, then we went to the spa to get our nails done. Then we waited for a while until our nails were dry and then we went swimming in the infinity pool.

I would say it was very productive, for a vacation.

There were some parasailers flying above the beach. My gdr is like “I would love to do that!” and I’m like “Keep those things the hell away from me!”

One of the parasailers went up very high and out over the ocean. I heard screaming. NOPE NOPE NOPE.

I have a confession to make. I’m 64 years old and I had no idea these tools existed.

I’ve always cleaned my brushes by removing the hair by hand (I’ve had super long hair my whole life. Now it’s the shortest it’s ever been, just below my shoulders.) Then I happened on these tools when I was on Amazon looking to replace a nail clipper.

I’m. Obsessed.

I brush my hair for 10 minutes every night just to play with my little rakes. Oh, and I bought a high end boar bristle brush ($30), too.

Did I mention I’m obsessed?

And for my fellow olds our there. This is really nice. Something I never knew I needed (since I can still twist myself up into a pretzel pretty easily), but yeah, this is good.

I hadn’t seen those, either! My hair had straggled ends that I could sit on, but it was really uncontrollable and falling out. I threw out my old brush because it was really hard to clean by hand, and got one that is much easier to clean. But now I am tempted to get a good brush and a rake! (This week I asked my son if he would hack my hair off, so that it was even and about six inches shorter. Less hair to pile up on the floor. He brushed out all the tangles and trimmed me, and it is MUCH easier to care for. Bless his heart!)

The structures and mechanics of that just aren’t there. Worst case could be a lot of chaos, perhaps with crime rising to the level of guerilla bands. We would settle into a situation like occupied France, but with no one to mount Operation Overlord. Then we all get to find out how brave we are.

I agree. The U.S. Army / reserves / national guard will not be used to invade and defeat states. No hard coups. But if Trump wins he doesn’t need a hard coup. He can use armed forces in quasi legal ways to “put down insurrection” and “defend the border.” He can slowly expand their duties. He won’t make the mistake of having anyone in leadership with principles again, so things will get worse and worse. A soft coup.

So yeah we will get to find out how brave we are.

I do tons of GOTV. I am not sitting around paralyzed with fear. But if Trump wins I believe things will get very bad faster than seems possible.

You are right. But I actually worry more about what happens when Biden wins but the Democrats lose control of the House or Senate (I really have a hard time seeing a path for us to keep the Senate. But then I think about Cruz and I have hope ;-). At least 2 more years of political chaos.

I am so tired. My day started by rolling out of bed, getting dressed and out the door. I went over to my brother’s house to get him some clothing (he texted me a list) and to feed his parrot. Today the parrot got out of the cage when I was filling up his water dish and flew up to the top of a door. Before I could even get out an “Oh, shi—-” he had divebombed me and landed on the cage. I was still wearing the leather gloves I use when feeding him (he nips), and I made a split second decision to grab him. I was successful and shoved him back in the cage saying, “Back in your house, BUCKO!”

Then I had to drive over to the hospital, find a place to park, walk to and through the hospital to my brother’s room, where I dropped off his clothes. I hung around for a bit while he was waiting for breakfast, which had not yet arrived, and it was 8:30 by then. He was wondering if surgery had been scheduled and he was NPO, but a couple minutes later food came. They really did give him half an English muffin in the center of a big plate. (Also a fruit plate, a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee.) He’s on a diabetic plus heart healthy diet.

After that I walked back to my car, got back on the freeway and drove in to work. I was tired. I stayed there for nearly 6 hours, and then drove back home, finishing out my work day. Then I listened to videos and half-dozed.

I’m zonked.

ETA: I forgot to mention the HVAC system at work, which seems to be right over/under my desk. When it starts running, it’s like having small earthquakes going on, makes my monitors vibrate. I don’t even need that.

So the Planned Parenthood in Mesa is in the shopping center on the southeast corner of Gilbert and Southern. The past two days, because I’ve been driving home around 3 pm, I have seen the same guy on the sidewalk holding a sign. It’s written like one of those screeds, all capital letters, but he doesn’t use thick markers and it’s illegible. I tried to take a picture of it as I went by today, but it was illegible.

I’m very certain he’s an anti-abortion protester.

The website for this Planned Parenthood location says very clearly they do not do abortions at that location.

I am happy he is wasting his time standing out at the curb with his illegible sign in front of the parking lot of a Planned Parenthood which does not do abortions. I’m not going to stop or bother him. He might then pick up and start harassing people over at the Tempe Planned Parenthood, where they do medication abortions.

Having read more of the transcript it is obvious why they wanted it in private. First Biden’s lawyer is excellent in the deposition, jumping in to keep the GOP lawyer from being misleading in their questioning.

And mislead they had to do. They had nothing. Things like showing him page 6 of a bank statement (the only page) asking him about money being moved around. A bank account Biden said he did not have any control over so why are they asking the questions. Then some more pages from another account that Biden had no control over. All because they had similar names to a bank account Biden did control.

They asked him about a draft letter he supposedly sent with his letterhead on it. His lawyer said what letterhead. It has Hunter’s name and address typed on it. That is not a letterhead. And , as was so obvious, he did not draft the letter. It was from a business partner. It was an attachment sent to him from a partner. But the GOP lawyer made it sound like Hunter drafted and sent it. (Reminds me of the ‘coke lines’ )

When Raskin had a chance to ask, he introduced the actual application form for the accounts showing that Biden was not onl the application at all. So ALL the questions, asked in misleading ways to suggest Biden was moving money around to hide it, were realy out of bounds.

Then they suggested he was moving money around on a certain date in order to hide the money from his divorce proceedings. It is obvious both he and his lawyer were livid. First, the divorce was done by this time. And secondly, what relevance did it have to Joe Biden?

I actually found the depostition kinda gripping. The GOP kept trying to ask misleading questions hoping Hunter would fall into sounding bad. He was excellent in his responses and his lawyer was wonderful.

If I was a juror hearing this, Hunter wins big time.

The third amendment will vaporize into thin air.

Absolutely. They misleadingly quoted one of those guys making it sound like the guy had said under oath that Joe had been given money. But when it was Raskin’s turn, he read into testimony that like 40 ages later in the guy’s deposition he specificaly said no money was ever given to Joe.

Yeah, I think they were hoping he would commit perjury or something. But he was really great. His dad should be proud.

MAGAt “civil war” fantasies always depend upon the idea that not only will they face no significant opposition, but that there will be such widespread support that even the Armed Forces will join them. Hence why, whenever they actually try to live out said fantasies (ex: Bird Sanctuary Stand-off & Jan 6th), they can’t make sense of why nobody’s riding to their rescue and everybody in uniform they run into either wants nothing to do with them or actively oppose them.

You are right. But I actually worry more about what happens when Biden wins but the Democrats lose control of the House or Senate (I really have a hard time seeing a path for us to keep the Senate. But then I think about Cruz and I have hope ;-). At least 2 more years of political chaos.

Don’t get frantic. This election is going to be a blue tsunami. Dems will keep the senate and house. Biden will win reelection comfortably. Trump will be convicted in the march 25 state trial. The judge will sentence trump to prison and he will be incarcerated before November. He will deny bail for the same reason any other convicted felon would be denied bail while facing multiple additional felony trials in other states. This sounds reassuring but please keep in mind: the worse things get for the GOP with their flaming dumpster fire of a Presidential candidate and total lack of policy beyond banning abortion IVF, libraries and Transvestite book readings, the less they have to lose.

And that means that they will not shrink from highly disruptive and even violent measures to create enough electoral chaos to get the election sent to the House or even the SCOTUS, which is shaping up to be the only way they can possibly win.

They might try that, but any election day violence will be sporadic, uncoordinated, and quickly put down. Cops don’t like rioters or shooters, it disrupts their day. It’s more likely they’ll try some post-election crap, but they don’t have the White House to give them cover.

I do hope that enough pre-emptive measures are put in place to guarantee the integrity of the election. But they will try everything to get votes disqualified. All they need is to get enough thrown out so that neither candidate can claim a majority of EC votes and it gets thrown to the House, where the GOP state delegations outnumber the Democrat-run states.

Indeed. 2020 showed us the map: Turn out in such numbers that efforts to ratfuck the results are next to impossible. Get out there and vote, then try to help as many people as you know to vote as well. If you can, vote early or by mail so you don’t have to fight the lines on Election Day. Make sure that not only is your voice heard, but so are the voices of everyone around you. And don’t be afraid to shout down the voices of those who dismiss the importance of voting or suggest that it is “rigged,” because you may not convince them in the end but you could prevent their viewpoint from influencing others not to vote.

I really do think something like this will happen. We are transitioning to our 7th political party system. And we are in the endgame, with old coalitions breaking and new ones forming as our country adapts to entirely new economic systems driven by disruptive technologies - water-powered mills, telegraph/railroads, Bessemer steel, ICE, integrated circuits, the internet.

We are almost done with the tranisition as the GOP begins to fracture - watch as more Republicans begin to work with moderate Democrats to get mutually beneficial things done, leaving the MAGAs in the dust with little political power. Wall Street prefers steadiness over crazy. Thus why it has done so well under Biden.

One real hallmark of these transitions is that the Presidents who lead us throught these transitions are some of the most important in our history - Washington/Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Teddy, FDR, Reagan. And now Biden. And, for reasons I won’t go into now, the odd transition Presidents are the most important. They help solve fundamental problems.

And who do we have but a President who already has gotten more things done with less than almost any other. I really beleive that when this is all said and done, Biden will be seen as one of the greats.

Biden has this.

We have gone through similar periods in the past. It always looks bleak in the middle of it. Yet 10 years after it ends, the winners look inevitable. And I know we will win because the winning side has always had certain characteristics in how it organizes itself.

The losing side is alays more hierarchcal and stratified (ie the British, the South, the Axis). Thus poor decision-making as the information must flow through many steps to get to the ones who actually have the power to make the decision. The lack of diversity creates epistemic closure making it hard to come up with creative solutions. Only those at the top are allowed to make decisions.

The winning side is always more diverse and pushes power out to the edges, distribuiting it away from the center, allowing rapid flow of important ideas and wise decision making to flourish. It is adaptive in ways the losing side can never be.

And it always looks forward. The losing side always looks back. We are almost done, I believe, wth this battle. The losing sid is beginning to fracture because of its inability to make wise decisions, constably getting outmaneuvered by those on the side that will win.

I do not know what the exact events will be. I certainly hope the Republicans break up evenfaster than they are. But break they will.

It is funny how long we took certain things for granted, like personal freedoms, women’s, minority and GLBTQ rights, not to mention our electoral system.

There was a time when it functioned without much conflict and only the occasional disputed outcome, all based on mutual trust & goodwill with a minimum of oversight, checks and balances.

The goodwill is gone, replaced by open malice and distrust of mysterious unidentified outside forces from Italian satellites, myriads of mules and Chinese infiltrators (just follow the bamboo traces), and we have to get back to ensuring that it functions reasonably and that our country can effect a change of government without riots and bloodshed, which is generally seen as one of the key features of a sound and functioning democracy.

There is a new concern about guns that are supposed to be destroyed as part of gun buyback programs effectively ending up back on the streets.

New York City has a robust gun buyback program- perhaps the biggest in the country.

So, Congressman Dan Goldman of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn is seeking to confirm New York City guns are being properly destroyed.

The cause for concern comes because of a growing industry where companies, including a popular one known as “Gunbusters” offer to destroy buyback guns for free. But they are not exactly destroying everything.

“What they do is they just remove the one part that is serialized and make it actually a weapon and then they’ll re-package all the other parts and sell them online,” Goldman said.

snip

He is also writing to the ATF asking it to change its gun buyback guidance to require complete destruction- to prevent more untraceable guns from flowing to the Tri-State.

Everyday heroes walk among us.

A sheriff’s deputy in Florida is being hailed a hero by the family of a 6-month-old baby he helped save after a fatal car crash.

Sgt. David Musgrove, a 20-year veteran of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, was on patrol the night of Feb. 8 when he said he saw a motorcycle speed by his car. Shortly after, he heard a loud crash.

When he arrived at the scene, Musgrove said, he saw the motorcyclist, who was killed in the crash, and heard screaming coming from the driver’s side of the car that was hit.

Inside the car was Kayleigh Foley, who was driving to dinner in Englewood, Florida, with her two daughters, 3-year-old Ariel and 6-month-old Lola, when they were struck by the motorcycle, which Musgrove said was traveling at least 90 mph at the time of the crash.

4) Insurrection - on hold. Calvinball Court decided to interfere for currently undisclosed reasons.
5) Classified Documents - still on. Federal charges, but not criming while Presidenting, so unaffected by the Calvinball Court’s attempt to stall.

Acclaimed investigative reporter Catherine Herridge was held in contempt of court Thursday for refusing to reveal the unnamed sources in a series of 2017 articles on a Chinese American scientist probed by the FBI.

US District Judge Christopher Cooper imposed a daily fine of $800 for each day that Herridge — who was recently let go from CBS News as part of mass layoffs by parent company Paramount — withholds the names of her source or sources for the Fox News articles penned nearly seven years ago.

The veteran journalist, however, has some time to file an appeal before the fine goes into effect.

She has repeatedly refused to answer questions about her confidential sources and invoked her First Amendment rights in doing so under oath.

re: #187 Nerdy Fish

Okay, suddenly I feel a lot better. So, to recap:

1) Defamation - done and dusted. He raped E. Jean Carroll, then defamed her when he claimed she was lying about it.
2) Civil Fraud - done and dusted. He got busted for a whole bunch of fraud in his real estate disclosures and dealings in New York.
3) Criminal Fraud - still on. State charges, not related to conduct while President.
4) Insurrection - on hold. Calvinball Court decided to interfere for currently undisclosed reasons.
5) Classified Documents - still on. Federal charges, but not criming while Presidenting, so unaffected by the Calvinball Court’s attempt to stall.
6) Georgia RICO - still on. State charges, not affected by Presidential immunity. Potentially impacted by the outcome of the Fani Willis shitshow.

1 - appeals are likely, but the judgment is in on both of the defamation cases. Judgment in favor of E Jean Carroll for more than $80 million.
2 - civil fraud judgment against Trump for more than $464 million (and growing by $100k+ a day in interest). Appeals are expected, both to overturn verdict and/or reduce the amount found by Engoron. Overturning verdict is highly unlikely, reducing the verdict is also unlikely but possible.
3 - state financial crimes re: campaign finance fraud (aka payments to Stormy Daniels) - still on and unaffected.
4 - insurrection - on hold. SCOTUS is actively undermining democracy by taking the case, instead of letting the lower court ruling stand (which found no immunity of a kind that Trump insists exists - but can’t be found anywhere in any reading of the law, facts, or mythos of the Founders). SCOTUS decided to further immolate itself on the Trumpworld defense.
5 - classified documents - Trump still trying to delay the case, by trying to schedule this to block other cases against him from going forward, but this case should it go to trial would be a very short one, with an outcome from a jury determined in short order. That’s why Trump is desperate for Loose Cannon to tip scales of justice to his favor. A summer trial date is expected. Cannon has gotten smacked down from the 11th Circuit enough times that she knows they wont stand for her bulkshit rulings.
6 - GA insurrection RICO case - should still proceed, despite the smear campaign case against Fani Willis. We’ve already had guilty plea deals by a number of Trump coconspirators/accomplices, including Chesebro and Powell, so there’s a lot for Trump to worry about here regardless of what happens with Willis. Chesebro is in further trouble in other states thanks to his lies about tweeting and using social media.

And then there’s this TexAssHole

“Retaliation”: Texas AG Paxton Demands PFLAG Provide Names, Addresses Of Trans Members

On Thursday, a legal filing by PFLAG National revealed that Attorney General Ken Paxton of Texas was seeking identification of transgender members. The organization alleges retaliation.

In a legal filing Thursday, PFLAG National sought to block a new demand from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that would require the organization to identify its Texas transgender members, doctors who work with them, and contingency plans for anti-transgender legislation in the state. The civil investigative demand, issued on Feb. 5, calls for extensive identifying information and records from the LGBTQ+ rights organization. PFLAG, in its filing to block the demands, describes them as “retaliation” for its opposition to anti-transgender laws in the state and alleges that they violate the freedom of speech and association protections afforded by the United States and Texas constitutions.

The demands are extensive. The letter to PFLAG National demands “unredacted” information around claims made by Brian Bond, PFLAG’s Chief Executive Officer, in a legal fight against the ban on gender-affirming care in the state. Bond’s claims highlighted that PFLAG represents 1,500 members in Texas, many of whom are seeking contingency plans if SB14, the ban on gender-affirming care, takes effect.

Per the lawsuit, PFLAG National states that it would be required to disclose Texas trans youth members, including “complete names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, jobs, home addresses, telephone numbers, [and] email addresses.” It also states they would need to hand over documents and communications related to their medical care, hospitals outside the state, and “contingency plans” discussed among members for navigating the new laws on gender-affirming care in Texas.

If you think seeing a total eclipse of the sun will be a cheap thrill, you’re mistaken.

On Monday April 8, the US will experience its first total eclipse since 2017 — and the cost to witness it is already soaring.

The “zone of totality,” where you can see the sun vanish completely, goes from Mexico’s Pacific coast on a north-easterly path through Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before passing through Canada’s maritime provinces.

I should’ve clarified: When I said “done and dusted” in my shorter summary, the initial trial is over and he was found liable. There is still the whole appeals process to go through, but in the two cases that have completed the trial so far, I (as a layperson) don’t see any easy argument to winning an appeal. I can’t say he has no chance of a reversal or a reduction, but as the Magic 8 Ball says, “Outlook not so good.”

White House demands Fox News retract coverage of bribery allegations against Hunter Biden, president

The White House is demanding Fox News retract its coverage of bribery allegations against President Biden’s son, Hunter, in the wake of the arrest of a key figure in the accusations against the Biden family.

Calling the allegations against Hunter Biden “false,” White House special assistant to the president Ian Sams blasted the network for covering claims of bribery against the president’s son both online and over its airwaves “aggressively.”

“I would cite the number of times Jesse Watters and Sean Hannity promoted this allegation and made false statements about President Biden on primetime television throughout this time period, but the footnote citations would fill multiple pages,” Sams wrote in his letter to Fox News top brass, which was obtained Thursday by The Hill.

“As you of course now know, the source of this allegation has been federally indicted for making the whole thing up,” Sams continued. “Despite this, Fox has taken no steps to retract, correct, or update its reporting on this false allegation from 2023.”

Rando explainer

What are his personal liquidity requirements that he was required to have for his personal guaranty of his companies’ mortgages?

To simplify:
1. His business entity executed the note and mortgage. In case of default and foreclosure, the business entity is a risk, not Trump personally.
2. To get better terms, including lower interest rates, Trump offered a personal guaranty.

3. The mortgage lenders agreed to accept his personal guaranty and give better terms (in part because he lied about his net worth), provided Trump maintained personal liquidity (cash on hand).

He can’t fund the appeal bonds because either doesn’t have cash on hand or he would default in the personal liquidity requirements or both - he doesn’t have the cash on hand and he is in default of the personal liquidity requirement(s).

BIDEN: No, he has never operated a hotel.

SWALWELL: So he’s never operated a hotel where foreign nationals spent millions at that hotel while he was in office?

BIDEN: No, he has not.

SWALWELL: Did your father ever employ in the Oval Office any direct family member to also work in the Oval Office?

BIDEN: My father has never employed any direct family members, to my knowledge.

SWALWELL: While your father was President, did anyone in the family receive 41 trademarks from China?

BIDEN: No.

SWALWELL: As President and the leader of the party, has your father ever tried to install as the chairperson of the party a daughter-in-law or anyone else in the family?

BIDEN: No. And I don’t think that anyone in my family would be crazy enough to want to be the chairperson of the DNC.

SWALWELL: Has your father ever in his time as an adult been fined $355 million by any State that he worked in?

BIDEN: No, he has not, thank God.

SWALWELL: Anyone in your family ever strike a multibillion dollar deal with the Saudi Government while your father was in office?

BIDEN: No.

SWALWELL: That’s all I’ve got.

National abortion ban will not be effective if childbearing-age women can go abroad to access them. So we will need mandatory pregancy tests and medical examinations for all such women leaving or re-entering the country.

Welcome to Gilead

Considering that a huge chunk, if not a majority of abortions in the USA are medication abortions, it’s just as likely there will be a huge underground drug market for misepristone and misoprolol. I predicted this decades ago.

Plus these guys are idiots if they think women are going back to no abortions. Women will do what we’ve always done—get the abortion whether it’s illegal or dangerous. And there are more options than there were in 1972. (Also more surveillance, that’s true.)

Employees at a Kentucky Dairy Queen were forced to eat ice cream that had been tainted with cleaning solution, sending some of them to the emergency room.

Our opponents have a say as well, and they might just go with “shoot and jail them all”(meaning the rest of us)

At some point this is likely going to break down, and what comes after will be chaotic and probably bloody.

The analogy I keep going back to is the endgame of the Peloponnesian War. Athens had to win every single battle. Sparta only had to win one.

Unless the GOP manages to suddenly start nominating sane candidates again, we have to face up to the likelihood that they will win an election and effectively end democracy at some point. Hoping to draw an inside flush every four years isn’t a strategy.

You’ve got it backwards, though. There are more of us than them. They have only won the popular vote once since 1988, and that was still under the shadow of 9/11. THEY have to win every battle. Trump can’t lose a single case. Republicans can’t afford to lose House seats. They have to gerrymander the shit out of things just to stay in the race.

They’re on their heels, not us. We’re just fighting for every inch because we started slow.

I’m not sure you understand how this works: If they win (or take by force) one election, they can effectively end liberal democracy right there. We become a authoritarian Hungary style democracy in name only where you vote but it’s meaningless (which is the most likely scenario), or steps are taken to becoming a defacto one party state. Its extremely uncommon for one party to win the presidency 3 times in a row, so at some point, they will take the presidency. After that, all bets are off.

We can hold them off until that party dies of its own toxicity. I work one election at a time, one foot in front of another. We are more likely than not to win the next. What happens after that depends more on how we create and nurture our replacements.

We can survive one rabid nutcase president. Trump 1 proved that. It’s kind of important that we don’t get Trump 2. Beyond that, it’s a thousand year war, and that’s optimistic.

I tend to see it differently. The dumber half of the local gentry is the true base, the heart, of the Republican Party. I am around these people more than I like to be. They are going all in on fascism because they are teetering on the brink of extinction, and they know it. They are lashing out in a desperate bid to save their privilege while they still have the power to do so.
They are on the wrong side of history, so they will be defeated. I dread the potential cost, though.

My attitude about the GOP and Putin are much the same: they are backed into a corner, dealing with a massive, debilitating dumpster fire of their own creation (War, DJT) and are getting closer to the point where they have nothing to lose by lashing out and fomenting massive chaos.

The attitude being that “If I’m going down, I’m gonna take you all with me!” In Putin’s case, he can really tank the European economy with serious saber rattling and threats of nuclear war, which would have a knock-on effect in America, destablizing things here.

And when it comes to the election, the GOP might as well just try to kick over the table and salvage as many pieces as it can and claim victory on technical grounds: SCOTUS will certainly back them up if they can get that far.

The plan going around right now in some quarters is that the Speaker refuses to seat Dems after the next election and then votes to not confirm the election if Biden wins, thereby throwing the election to the House and Trump is confirmed. All of this is entirely legal, but not likely the Senate would join in. It still sets stage for both candidates claiming victory next January 6.

Note this is very close to what Trump et al tried to do last time. This time they will be better prepared at the state level to overturn unwanted results and have governors install alternative EC slates. This is part of why I said we may not be able to just vote our way out of this. They are prepared to simply ignore our votes. We need to be ready for mass strikes and to stand by blue state governors who refuse to bend the knee in this. I think there is a very high possibility that organized armed violence is on the table and we have to be prepared for that. The Speaker is an apocalyptic dispensationalist nut who claims he is on a mission from God. Don’t believe for moment he isn’t capable of setting off the next civil war.

Mike Johnson will not be in charge on the first day of the next Congress unless, on that day, he is voted as Speaker. At that point, the Speaker then swears everyone in. Yes that’s been brought up and I’m not sure how their thinking is to get around it without the parliamentarian, unless they are confidant he will go with it or they simply Calvinball the constitution and trash the quorum. If they have a majority going in, I think the going assumption for the last 3 years is that they will refuse to affirm a Biden win and try to run the one vote per state gambit and Biden’s ppl have been preparing for it. Trump will almost certainly have 4 votes on SCOTUS for that.

The plan going around right now in some quarters is that the Speaker refuses to seat Dems after the next election and then votes to not confirm the election if Biden wins, thereby throwing the election to the House and Trump is confirmed. All of this is entirely legal, but not likely the Senate would join in. It still sets stage for both candidates claiming victory next January 6…..

- while the speaker is elected ‘by the house’ we know it’s by the majority party

second, refusing to accurately count the certifications is not ‘all perfectly legal’ and everyone would not simply sit by and say ‘well that’s how it works, that’s the way it goes…”

People seem to want to get this wrong. At the beginning of every session, there is no House. There is no one in charge. Every two years it starts over. Mike Johnson will not be in charge on the first day of the next Congress unless, on that day, he is voted as Speaker. At that point, the Speaker then swears everyone in. If he is not voted Speaker, he has no power. Oh, they like to do a ceremony in the House to make it look formal, but it’s no different than a new president coming in. The old one doesn’t have to be there.

His opinion was in a private letter not made public for decades)

Dune has a profound pessimism you don’t see with LOTR. Galadriel refuses to touch the One Ring and Frodo resists it to the point of almost dying. Paul grasps his One Ring with both hands and burns entire worlds.

I have very few pictures — the organizers ask us not to take them, because they have photographers documenting everything and they (will, in a couple of weeks) post their pictures for everyone. The pastry shot is one of the few I have.

Uniform is red — TNG “command” uniform. I got it because when I bought mine, the other colors didn’t match well with the “real” colors. Otherwise, I’d have gone for blue (surprise!).

I was looking up computers on NASA rockets, and while the flight software for the Apollo rockets truly was a binary program, it was a hardwired board, requiring worker, women, to essentially sew ones and zeroes on a grid to run.

It took eight weeks to weave the memory for a single flight computer. The computers in the command module and the lunar module were identical, but their programming was different, and the programs for each Apollo flight were also different.

While tedious, the work demanded attention, skill and experience. Raytheon found that out during Apollo when there was a brief strike in the mid-1960s that included the Waltham factory.

Managers and supervisors attempted to keep the Apollo computer assembly line going by sitting down to do the weaving themselves. According to Ed Blondin, a senior manager at the facility, “Everything they made was scrap.”

Sigh. In fact, he tries to do things different from his visions to stop the jihad until he realizes that there is nothing he can do, and he recognizes the horror of what is happening. I don’t know about Tolkien’s views of it, but the profound pessimism in the novels is because of the inevitability of the outcomes.

“My Liege makes a joke,” Korba said, voice trembling. “The Jihad has brought ten thousand worlds into the shining light of—”
“Into the darkness,” Paul said. “We’ll be a hundred generations recovering from Muad’dib’s Jihad. I find it hard to imagine that anyone will ever surpass this.” A barking laugh erupted from his throat.
“What amuses Muad’dib?” Stilgar asked.
“I am not amused. I merely had a sudden vision of the Emperor Hitler saying something similar. No doubt he did.”

I don’t know what their thinking is to get around the new congress has no speaker issue but I’m guessing they will try to ratfuck it before adjourning if Dems might take control, or they are sure they will retain control and proceed. Facsists don’t obey laws that inconvenience them, so I’m not sure how we expect them to do it when they have a supermajority in SCOTUS that is making entirely new shit up out of thin air and they have a shot at permanent power for the rest of our lives. I’d expect to see some red state governors refusing to certify dem congressional wins if it looks like control is close. Even if they eventually get confirmed, it could take months. Enough time for the damage to be done.. See Trump’s phone calls to Georgia and elsewhere threatening officials to make things happen.

2) Refusing to count the certification is legal unless SCOTUS says otherwise, but how would you even force that? SCOTUS has no way to make a coequal branch obey it. Again, permanent power is on the line. Why would they let it go over Roberts getting cold feet? We have facts and they matter not a bit if our opponents have institutional power to ignore them. Belafon’s point that they are desperate and outnumbered is correct. However, they are also entrenched in a majority of the governorships and state legislatures with the ability to exercise a Samson option and wreck the Republic if they don’t get their white grievance despotism. I firmly believe this is our most dangerous moment since the end of the Civil War, because this really is their best shot for permanent minority rule and we already know they are planning to use the military and federal LE to begin mass arrests and gunning down protests. I don’t think they are going to let the constitution or regular order stand in the way of what they want.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday it would wind down much of its remaining guidance specifically targeted at COVID-19, including an official end to a pandemic-era plea for Americans to stay home for five days after testing positive.

The agency cited improvements in the rates of hospitalizations and deaths inflicted by the virus this past season for the change in its recommendations.

“COVID-19 remains an important public health threat, but it is no longer the emergency that it once was, and its health impacts increasingly resemble those of other respiratory viral illnesses,” the agency said Friday in a report justifying its decision.

Instead of offering recommendations specific for COVID-19, the agency said it would switch to offer a “unified, practical approach to addressing risk” from the virus alongside influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

“We’re taking this unified approach so things can be simpler and more likely to be followed. And if they’re easier and more likely to be followed, then we’re protecting everyone, right? So the folks who are more vulnerable were top of mind when we did this,” CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen told CBS News.

Just a reminder that demographics disfavor the GOP. Millennials are no longer young voters. They range in age from 27-43, prime voting years. Along with Gen Z, they will make up 44% of the electorate this year, larger than Boomers.

And they dislike the GOP 2:1. The easiest way to win is to get them out to vote. Reproductive freedom is important to them. Legalization of marijuana is important to them. Student debt is important to them. They are also the demographics that realize democracy is under attack.

That is why I;ve been watching how Biden connects with them. This will be critical for a blue wave.

This tracks with my thinking. I’ve gamed it out for years with my bestie, a lawyer here in Colorado, and my eldest kiddo in grad school. I see a clear enough blue wave to get the US through the transformative crisis. Or, a Trump victory that functionally results in the end of the US.
Primarily, the only path where Trump is installed that I can see results in a critical mass of states voting to secede. The whole left coast and northeast just won’t go along.
So that’s the de facto all bets off civil war scenario I suppose.
Probably no more than a 27% chance of happening ;)

The University of Florida is firing all employees in positions related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) according to a memo sent on Friday. It follows the passage of a state law in 2023 targeting college funds spend to DEI.

UF officials say they have closed the Office of the Chief Diversity Officer, eliminated DEI positions and administrative appointments, and halted DEI-focused contracts with outside vendors. Officials say 13 positions were eliminated and 15 administrative positions were ended for faculty.

The decision was made to comply with the Florida Board of Governor’s regulation 9.016 on prohibited expenditures. Approximately $5 million previously allocated to DEI initiatives will be reallocated into a faculty recruitment fund.

Eliminated employees will receive 12 weeks of standard pay and are encouraged to apply before April 19 to other positions in the university.

You can’t get to that point without having majorities in the House and Senate. Right now, the fascist GOP controls the House, and the Senate is razor thin held by Democrats.

The woman charged with drunk driving in the death of a Folly Beach bride is expected to be released from jail on house arrest after prosecutors in Charleston County failed to meet a court-imposed deadline to bring the 26-year-old to trial.

Jamie Lee Komoroski has been jailed since her arrest the night of April 28, 2023, on the charges of reckless vehicular homicide and three counts of felony DUI. The death of Samantha Miller, a 34-year-old bride, in her wedding gown provoked national outcry and worldwide media attention.

The defendant was denied bond at an emotionally raw, televised hearing in August in Charleston County’s General Sessions Court. But the presiding judge, who usually handles cases in Florence and Marion counties, advised attorneys to expedite Komoroski’s trial due to what he called “the very extraordinary circumstances” of the case.

Depending on how SCOTUS goes with Trump it could be a perfect time for left agitators to demand an expansion of the court.

We will get a gauge this June of just how receptive SCOTUS might be to GOP congressional tampering next December and January.

Everybody on Twitter and Blue Sky convinced SCOTUS will ultimately rule against Trump, but appears there might be at least 4 votes in his favor as God Emperor in Perpetuity considering how certain it seemed that the DC court had settled the matter once and for all.

There may be real chance they invalidate the Jan 6 charges and go all in for Republic of Gilead. I mean, it’s simply insane. We are off the map.

Damn, I thought he had a heart attack-ack-ack-ack.

Thomas Kingston, the husband of Lady Gabriella Windsor, was found dead at his parents’ home with a “catastrophic head injury” and a gun close to his body, a coroner has said.

Kingston, 45, died at the property in a Cotswold village on Sunday.

Katy Skerrett, the senior coroner for Gloucestershire, said the financier, who was the son-in-law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, had lunch with his parents before his body was found in an outbuilding.

She said a post-mortem had been undertaken and that a provisional cause of death had been given as a “traumatic wound to head”.

Anyone watching Shogun on FX? We watched the 1st 2 episodes last night and enjoyed it. The dialogue was not what I expected but and found the humor between characters amusing.
I’m a big Clavell fan and consumed everything he wrote as a teenager and young adult. A true master in my mind.
I think it will be a good series.

Saw the first episode on hulu and I’m hooked. I saw the miniseries in 1980 but i remember but little of it other than i thought it was great. This one has the same potential. The actor playing toranga kind of reminds me of toshiro mifune who played the role in the first one. He has some huge shoes to fill, however.

The only downside were the myriad number of commercials. They had none the first 1/2 hour, a batch every 3 or 4 minutes, it seemed.

re: #404 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

There’s a lot of worry above that what’s coming is an immediate civil war if Trump is elected, but I think that the more likely outcome is that it will accelerate what Republicans are have always tried, in different forms, to make in their image: Fraenkel’s Dual State.

Prerogative state creep is something we can observe in Republican rhetoric pre-Trump: every possible chance they get, conservatives argue for less formal accountability and more brutality for their preferred groups. The future they’re planning isn’t absolute control over everyone with troops, it’s slowly escalating and normalizing state terror and state intervention in ways that reflect their hierarchical preferences.

Laws like this probably can’t stand…for now…but the purpose is threefold: it signals to their followers what kind of license they’ll be granted if they participate in building the conservative prerogative state; it functions to instill terror in everyone that falls into the class of “could be interpreted as a migrant”; it begins the normalization of subjective individual impressions…that’s a migrant, I’m scared, therefore I can kill them…into the structure of law.

(with that last one, consider how “Stand Your Ground” exists to create ambiguity in shootings, such that there’s no longer a clear standard for self defense but instead a kind of interpretative gap in which narrative control can *make* the shooting self defense.)

(It’s also worth considering how cops have taken the accountability of cameras in stride, and simply release edited footage to press sources to create visual narratives in which they’re not the instigators or the ones that escalate. At the same time you find them inventing pretexts in which filming them is an attack, and arguing in the breach that filming is illegal such that they permitted to check or confiscate phones. This is all prerogative state creep, the creation of unaccountable institution permitted arbitrary power.)

It’s also worth talking about how this, and measures like this, are not really intended to end migration…because American industries that fund conservatives use a lot of exploited, cheap-because-it-is-unfree labor…but is a kind of sop for nativists. In effect, this is not a “solve” for migrants but a kind of cathartic gesture granted to the ingroup.

(A very, very likely way that conservative migration policy will bend is to further elaborate on the prison-industrial complex’s existing routing of captive migrants into the labor stream…in other words, the jobs will still be taken but by penal labor that more perfectly captures the value made)

Polling shows that about 75% of weekly church goers think abortion is morally wrong. A similar number think abortion should be illegal in most circumstances(with the usual exceptions, rape, incest, life of the mother)

If you look at less regular church goers the numbers fall way off, so I guess it depends on your definition of “good christian”

And that is 75% of the actual people that go to church weekly or more. What percentage of people go to church weekly or more. I have seen and found estimates that is from maybe 1/4 of our population down to an estimate of only 3% of our population. So maybe we meet them somewhere around the middle and say 18% actually go to church weekly or more. So 75% of 18% of our population think that.

Found on the book of faces:

When winter’s grip tightens on Norway, particularly in the northern reaches above the Arctic Circle, the stage is set for ice flowers to bloom. Their emergence hinges on a unique interplay between elements. Primarily, they require extremely cold temperatures, typically below -20°C (-4°F). Additionally, calm, clear skies are key, allowing efficient heat radiation from the ice surface. These factors combine to create a phenomenon known as supercooling, where water remains liquid even below its freezing point.
Then, a trigger arrives, often in the form of a tiny speck of dust or salt. This microscopic “imperfection” disrupts the equilibrium, sending a ripple of crystallization through the water. In an instant, the supercooled liquid transforms into ice, but not in the usual way. Instead of forming a solid sheet, the ice nucleates outwards in intricate branching patterns. These delicate tendrils, resembling the veins of leaves or flower petals, are sculpted by subtle variations in temperature and wind.
Some ice flowers resemble miniature snowflakes, while others unfurl like delicate lace, each one a unique masterpiece sculpted by nature. While captivating to the eye, ice flowers play a vital role in the arctic ecosystem. They provide crucial habitat for microorganisms and algae, forming the base of the food chain for larger marine life. They also influence gas exchange between the ocean and atmosphere, impacting global climate processes.

This is my thinking exactly. We voted ourselves into this mess. The way out must be a more informed electorate voting for sane and responsible people. If voting wasn’t so effective, the fascists wouldn’t be spending so much of their time and energy trying to stop it.

The Dems need to realize that the past norms have been replaced by pure power games. The Dems need to do stuff like McConnell did and more, until the GOP is gone or until they accept that the old norms are better for everyone.
This means that blue states need to undo fair map rules and gerrymander a supermajority in the house. There should be 0 GOP congressman from CA. Expand the court to 13 seats. Add some territories as states, etc.
It’s absurd to keep playing by the same rules.
