The tripod makes a huge difference in shots like this. It's almost impossible to get it this sharp holding the camera in your hands. The wireless shutter release also helps, because pressing the button almost always causes some movement.

Great photo and excellent points. Of course, if there's even a gentle breeze, that can affect the crispness of the image. I've come to set up my camera so that I take a series of photos (continuous fire) so I can get the image I want. Also, if a tripod isn't handy, image stabilization can help significantly.

You can do that, but if you're working in windy conditions, or waiting for certain action, even in macros, the 2 second delay might mean you miss the shot.
For Canon's Rebel XTi, I found that the wireless remote was pretty reasonably priced.

Yes, you can use the autotimer to avoid pressing the shutter release too. The one disadvantage is that you don't have as much flexibility that way -- the timer goes off when it goes off, not necessarily when the subject is just right.
You can also get a wired shutter release, about half the price of the wireless.

I figure on my next trip I'm going to tinker with multiple exposures and bracketing to try my hand at high dynamic range photos. Takes a bit of work to do the software manipulation, but the final product can be spectacular.
I sometimes bracket my nighttime shots, just because I am not sure which will look best, and I'll do that also when I'm taking waterfall shots. Having a digital photo means you never have to worry about processing the bad shots - only running out of storage space on your memory cards.

NEW Gaza tunnels: "we smuggle everything - except weapons"
Many of the daily goods in Gaza's market arrive via these tunnels, whose openings emerge into little outhouses or discreet courtyards.
'In this neighbourhood nearly everyone operates a tunnel,' explains Al-Hajj Fadhel, whose four wives and numerous offspring live in a two-room house.
'We smuggle anything we can sell - everything except weapons,' he says proudly. 'Through these tunnels come chewing gum and biscuits for Palestinian children, plus nappies, chickpeas and tinned foods.'

NEW Gaza tunnels: "we smuggle everything - except weapons"
/you see, the Good Fairy provides the weapons
Mullah Nasrudin is the starring character in a vast number of amusing tales told in regions all over the world, particularly in countries in or near the Middle East.
Nasrudin the Smuggler:
Nasrudin the smuggler was leading a donkey that had bundles of straw on its back. An experienced border inspector spotted Nasrudin coming to his border.
“Halt,” the inspector said. “What is your business here?”
“I am an honest smuggler!” replied Nasrudin.
“Oh, really?” said the inspector. “Well, let me search those straw bundles. If I find something in them, then you are required to pay a border fee!”
“Do as you wish, “Nasrudin replied, “but you will not find anything in those bundles.”
The inspector intensively searched and took apart the bundles, but could not find a single thing in them. He turned to Nasrudin and said, “You have managed to get one by me today. You may pass the border.”
Nasrudin crossed the border with his donkey while the annoyed inspector looked on. And then the very next day, Nasrudin once again came to the border with a straw-carrying donkey. The inspector saw Nasrudin coming and thought, “I’ll get him for sure this time.”
He checked the bundles of straw again, and then searched through Nasrudin’s clothing, and even went through the donkey’s harness. But once again he came up empty handed and had to let Nasrudin pass.
This same pattern continued every day for several years, and every day Nasrudin wore more and more extravagant clothing and jewelry that indicated he was getting wealthier. Eventually, the inspector retired from his longtime job, but even in retirement he still wondered about the man with the straw-carrying donkey.
“I should have checked that donkey’s mouth more extensively,” he thought to himself. “Or maybe he hid something in the donkey’s rectum.”
Then one day he spotted Nasrudin’s face in a crowd. “Hey,” the inspector said, “I know you! You are that man who came to my border everyday for all those years with a straw-carrying donkey. Please, sir, I must talk to you.”
Nasrudin came towards him and the inspector continued talking. “My friend, I always wondered what you were smuggling past my border everyday. Just between you and me, you must tell me. I must know. What in the world were you smuggling for all those years? I must know!”
Nasrudin simply replied, “donkeys.”

I've been looking into the HDR technique too; one of these days I'll get around to experimenting with it.
Yeah, digital cameras are the cat's pajamas - not having to worry about wasting film, or processing time. A 16GB SD memory card holds an enormous number of pictures, for about 30 bucks. And at that price you can carry a couple of spares and have the capacity for thousands of photos.

I just got an email from the O! Haven't a clue as to how his people got my email address, but this is his latest strategy using the Internet to mobilize his troops:
Dee,
The economic crisis is growing more serious every day, and the time for action has come.
Last week, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will jumpstart our economy and put more than 3 million people back to work.
I hope to sign the recovery plan into law in the next few weeks. But I need your help to spread the word and build support.
It's not enough for this bill to simply pass Congress. Americans need to know how it will affect their lives -- they need to know that help is on the way and that this administration is investing in economic growth and stability.
Governor Tim Kaine has agreed to record a video outlining the recovery plan and answering questions about what it means for your community. You can submit your questions online and then invite your friends, family, and neighbors to watch the video with you at an Economic Recovery House Meeting.
Join thousands of people across the country by hosting or attending an Economic Recovery House Meeting this weekend.
The stakes are too high to allow partisan politics to get in the way.
That's why I've consulted with Republicans as well as Democrats to put together a plan that will address the crisis we face.
I've also taken steps to ensure an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability. Once it's passed, you will be able to see how every penny in this plan is being spent.
You can help restore confidence in our economy by making sure your friends, family, and neighbors understand how the recovery plan will impact your community.
Sign up to host or attend an Economic Recovery House Meeting and submit your question for the video now:
[Link: my.barackobama.com...]
Our ability to come together as a nation in difficult times has never been more important.
I know I can rely on your spirit and resolve as we lead our country to recovery.
Thank you,
President Barack Obama
P.S. -- If you can't host or attend an Economic Recovery House Meeting, you can still submit your questions for Governor Kaine and then share the video with your friends and family this weekend. Learn more here:

Yes. With built in color correction, gamma and white point settings plus the color tools available in even PS Elements ($70 consumer version of PS). Or you can really go nuts and get a color calibrated monitor and tools so you can match color between screen and output. To real beat then noise you really need the pure blue or green background. Any thing with a texture or slightly off will give you noise. If it's not a pure blue or green the CCD does color mixing to get the background color right and that adds the noise.

Most digital cameras now let you play with the white balance, which helps get the colors as accurate as possible. If you get a reasonably good camera, color reproduction is usually very good.
The noise you're talking about sounds like JPEG artifacts. You can avoid a lot of that by setting the camera to its highest quality setting for JPEGs, and you can wipe out the noise entirely by using the camera's RAW, uncompressed format.

(Something I posted on another site today, maybe this will say something to someone here)...
For 2009, I recommend that both men and women who are looking for that “special one,” to raise their expectations. I know I am.
Don’t hope, but KNOW that your partner will be sexy and good looking. I don’t mean good looking like GQ or sexy like Maxim, because those “models” rarely exist in everyday life. Know that you will find something special about your partner, which looks good to you and something that no one else has. And sexy is what you make your partner feel like in intimate situations. If looking sexy is your only gauge to sexuality, then you really don’t have an emotional connection to your lover. Looking sexy and being sexy is like night and day.
Don’t hope, but KNOW your partner will be loving. Loving what you both have, not what you both want. What you see in the first few moments of a new relationship is usually what you will be getting for the long term. If adjustments need to be made, in a honest relationship, most of the time they will happen on their own.
Don’t hope, but KNOW your partner will be perfect. Perfect for you, not for your family or friends, not for some preconceived Hollywood fiction or not for some “Penthouse Forum” entry. Don’t bring these outside influences with you on a date or into your personal space, they will only get in the way of your heart.
Don’t hope, but KNOW that your relationship will be like a romance novel and then laugh with each other when that doesn’t happen. There is a difference between being serious and taking each other too seriously.
I don’t think these needs have changed much since I was born in 1952, but I do believe that we have lost sight of what really matters. I feel many men and women have let themselves be taken hostage by shallow ideas, valueless expectations and useless advice.

Iraq reconstruction history details waste, failures.
"The "skeletal, half-built" shell of a maximum-security prison in Khan Bani Saad "will probably never house an inmate" even though the United States spent $40 million on the now-halted $73 million project."

New at zomblog:
I spotted this swastika spraypainted on the sidewalk in the city of Richmond, California. The street where this photo was taken is not in the residential part of town, but adjacent to some business parks in a light industrial area next to the freeway. The road next to the swastika is frequently used for “sideshows” — late-night car-spinning and street-racing outdoor gang parties. The asphalt up and down the block is covered in skidmarks and tire-tracks.In all my days in the Bay Area, I have practically never seen a swastika drawn as graffiti anywhere (outside of a political protest, of course). I had originally intended to note that Richmond is not known to have any neo-Nazi activity (the city is actually known for its large African-American community), until I noticed this article about a hate crime in Richmond in which a black man was beaten up by white teenagers spewing racist epithets. Racists in Richmond? What?
Here’s a close-up of the same swastika. I could speculate as to what the appearance of such a symbol means in this place and context, but the truth is I have no idea. I doubt it has any direct connection to the beating incident, but the swastika certainly is disturbing, I’ll say that for it.
What is this world coming to?

Camera: Canon Powershot G10 in macro mode, tripod-mounted, with wireless shutter release.
Oh, that wireless shutter release is sweet! I want one of those (Note, however, Charles, that Amazon lists them as "unavailable" at the moment). Of course, I'd have to get a high-end Canon to make it work, but still...
The reason I fantasize about a wireless shutter release is because of a longstanding plan to have a camera secretly attached to the top of a protest sign, perhaps disguised inside a Teddy Bear or something like that. Then I can walk around among the moonbats and jihadists snapping away merrily -- from an overhead vantage point, even better -- and no one would have a clue, because I'd be pushing the shutter remote surreptitiously (perhaps also disguised on the handle of the sign)!

It's not coming to anything. The world is as it's always been.
The problem is that standards of behavior have fallen, and keep falling. And if you insist - as people have been doing for the last 20 years, minimum - that simply being white makes you a racist, some kids are going to act it out. It's vile. But it's not unexpected.
After that poor transexual kid was beaten to death in Hayward seven years ago, I knew there was a real problem.

U.N. Sponsors Refugee 'Theme Park' for the Rich and Famous
DAVOS, Switzerland — Are you looking for a little excitement in your life? Imagine what fun it would be to live through a rebel attack . . . to navigate a minefield … to negotiate with corrupt officials and border guards in a desperate effort to survive.
Thanks to a U.N.-sponsored exhibition, visitors to the World Economic Forum in Davos last week got just that opportunity -- at a theme park with a name right out of Disney: "Refugee Run."
Visitors were given the opportunity to experience the harsh conditions that millions of refugees and internally displaced people face daily in some of the world's most hostile environments and killing fields – exciting places like Darfur, Congo, Iraq and Pakistan.
Walk in and you can visit a small tent similar to the ones you see in Darfur, a canvas cover over a dirt floor. Move on to a larger tent, a replica of the shelters that house large numbers of Afghan refugees and familiea in Pakistan or Iran.
We’re taking fun for the entire family -- don't forget to visit the gift shop. And when your day in refugee hell is over, you go back to your hotel at this Swiss mountain retreat and relax in your luxurious jacuzzi.

Or tell them that you support and approve the Geithner / Daschle Income Tax Recovery Plan.
What Plan, you ask? Just don't pay your US Income Taxes. The Infernal Revenue Service won't bother you one bit. After all, there's a precedent, isn't there!

I would have tons of respect for Obama if he appointed Daschle just to make him pay-back his taxes--- Then, Obama dumps him. Brilliant.

Only among those who had those tendencies in the first place.
I'm not sure if it is a matter of 'tendencies'. I believe it is possible to actively recruit and radicalize. Not everyone who ever became involved in a white supremacist gang had some underlying issue. A charismatic, crafty recruiter can do a lot of damage among impressionable youths. I've seen their recruiting practices first hand. They don't come at you with balls to the wall racism.
Hearing certain 'truths' rebutted for the first time can often sound profound. The Communists/Collectivist Anarchists use the same method. The mind fuck.
We aren't properly educated as kids. America is fundamentally good. Democracy is the best form of government. Yada, yada. We aren't taught why any of that is true, nor are we exposed to any contrary view from primary sources. When you are challenging someone on something that they have never even thought about, but believe in by way indoctrination, it is pretty easy to come across as a genius and worthy of respect at the drop of a hat.
Once they have gained that little bit of doubt, they can start digging away at Affirmative Action, etc. No one can give a young kid an explanation of racial considerations under the law that can't then be torn to pieces by a Neo-Nazi. Once they have their target harboring a bit of resentment, they are pretty much free to start work on the heavy duty hate.

Subject: What recovery means for you
XXXXXX
The economic crisis is growing more serious every day, and the time for action has come.
Last week, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will jumpstart our economy and put more than 3 million people back to work.
I hope to sign the recovery plan into law in the next few weeks. But I need your help to spread the word and build support.
It’s not enough for this bill to simply pass Congress. Americans need to know how it will affect their lives — they need to know that help is on the way and that this administration is investing in economic growth and stability.
That’s why I’ve consulted with Republicans as well as Democrats to put together a plan that will address the crisis we face.
I’ve also taken steps to ensure an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability. Once it’s passed, you will be able to see how every penny in this plan is being spent.
P.S. — If you can’t host or attend an Economic Recovery House Meeting, you can still submit your questions for Governor Kaine and then share the video with your friends and family this weekend. Learn more here:

Out in rural areas you'll see them occasionally. Often with other WP symbols like a Confederate Flag or Odin's Cross. There's a mailbox that has some of that on it fairly near where I live. I'll take a picture of it next time I'm out in that area.
