So naturally I have a true bat story. When I was a kid our family used to vacation in the Adirondacks. One evening a bat somehow got caught in the screened in porch. Us for kids screamed like well kids. My father, always the naturalist decided this was a good lesson. So he grabs a broom and ushers us all quivering out into the dark porch all the while explaining bat echo location to us. So Dad summarizes; "see I could wave this broom stick at the bat even in the dark and it will see it and easily get out of the way." He thus demonstrates by taking a lazy swing with the broom handle at the bat which is fluttering about in the dark and connects and knocks it dead to the ground!

Sounds to me like he did everything right - issued a warning, then defended himself against attack.
Not sure what the laws are there, but around here that's more than good enough to justify use of deadly force. In some areas (Florida?) the bar is set even lower - the presence of an intruder in your home comes with an automatic assumption of imminent harm.
Even in areas extremely tolerant of such actions, the kid needs a lawyer and will probably wind up at least $50k or so in the hole after defending himself.

That would be my advice. As to what actually took place - impossible to say. There's the student's account, whatever forensic evidence may have to say, and the past history of both the student and the burglar.
I'd say things are looking fairly good for the student, but as already noted it's going to be expensive for him, at best.

So why was a speech last week by Prof. Mojib Latif of Germany's Leibniz Institute not given more prominence?
Latif is one of the leading climate modellers in the world. He is the recipient of several international climate-study prizes and a lead author for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He has contributed significantly to the IPCC's last two five-year reports that have stated unequivocally that man-made greenhouse emissions are causing the planet to warm dangerously.
Yet last week in Geneva, at the UN's World Climate Conference--an annual gathering of the so-called "scientific consensus" on man-made climate change --Latif conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade and that we are likely entering "one or even two decades during which temperatures cool."
And for the record, he never did an about face, it is not scientists, but rather scientist, and he certainly never conceded the Earth has not warmed for nearly a decade. This is a series of utter lies. The article is pure bullshit.

Apparently, the models currently being used aren't entirely successful if this paper is correct. And to miss a large-scale fluctuation of the duration and magnitude in question seems like a pretty large inaccuracy.
I'm certain that models improve with time. If you take all the data from, say, ten or twenty years ago and plug it into the best climate model available today, it seems that you don't arrive at a different overall global temperature than what is reflected in reality, by a significant margin.
And according to your original post, the departure from reality seems to be due to processes which are unknown or not fully understood at this time.
And finally, I'm not denying anything. I'm just pointing out facts in order to see what makes you bluster. It seems that the most innocuous of statements will get you there, even when I've carefully avoided making any sort of pronouncement on where I stand regarding this issue. You just leap to the conclusion that anyone questioning anything you say, no matter how small or trivial, is some sort of knuckle-dragging oaf who needs to be attacked and vilified.
Way to win friends and influence people. And you wonder why promoting GW is such an uphill battle? Maybe it's because so many of the people doing the promotion are such flaming assholes when it comes to dealing with other people in general, let alone those who disagree with them.

The car doesn't produce CO2, but producing hydrogen from natural gas does.
And hydrogen made with solar power is expensive; the economical source would be nuclear power. (Admittedly, the 2003 National Academy of Engineering study is a bit out of date, but I'm unaware of any breakthroughs that change its conclusions)

Much electricity in America comes from coal plants. Use less juice, burn less coal. As to litter it has two big effects..
1. much of the stuff ends up in to oceans and water ways. This kkills ocean flora. That means less CO2 scrubbing.
2. Lots of litter and land fills do all sorts of toxic things to soils and it kills off terrestrial plants and hence less scrubbing.

I agree with that. However, there is also a word for wasting it unnecessarily to your own detriment, that would be prodigal.
I am all for switching to nuclear, solar and wind. I have said this many times and we would create millions of American jobs doing it, while staunching the flow of money to people who want to kill us.
It is a win for the economy as the programs long term pay for themselves and pump dollars into American jobs. It is a win for our foreign policy, I am all for telling our friends the Saudis or Chavez et all to go to hell, and it is a win for future generations.

Kennedy, potentially paving the way for appointment of a new US senator later this week.The Senate approved the measure by a 24-to-16 vote, leaving one final procedural hurdle in both chambers before the bill heads to Patrick's desk. The House and Senate are expected to enact the bill on Wednesday, a formality unlikely to derail the effort.
Patrick has pushed for the bill and could sign it as early as Wednesday. Administration officials have been considering several possible appointees, but have declined to release the names out of concern that such a step could affect the legislative debate.
Among the names frequently mentioned by observers are Michael S. Dukakis, the former governor; Paul G. Kirk Jr., the former Democratic National Committee chairman and an aide to Kennedy; Charles J. Ogletree, Harvard Law School professor; and Evelyn Murphy, former lieutenant governor.

Allow me to translate that.
Bibi is sending a message to Obama. He's telling him that since Obama did not keep the commitment that George Bush made to Israel, then Israel is certainly under no compulsion to keep a commitment...especially one that was rejected by the Palestinians outright.
More importantly, Obama had to backtrack on this issue:
Palestinians have strengthened their efforts on security, but they need to do more to stop incitement and to move forward with negotiations. Israelis have facilitated greater freedom of movement for the Palestinians and have discussed important steps to restrain settlement activity, but they need to translate these discussions into real action on this and other issues. And it remains important for the Arab states to take concrete steps to promote peace. [Emphasis mine]
No settlement freeze, in other words.
Obama lost. It was stupid of him to side with the Palestinians when they offered nothing. It was stupid of him to think Saudi Arabia would do anything. It was stupid of him to think he could force Israel into a total settlement freeze.

On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" today, Joe Scarborough, as a NYTimes blog put it, "castigated some commentators and Republicans, vowing to create a 'conservative honor roll' calling out those who express over-the-top hate-filled sentiments." Chief among "those" appears to be Fox News host Glenn Beck.
Scarborough went on a lengthy tangent, saying: "You cannot say that the president of the United States hates all white people. You cannot call the President of the United States a racist. You cannot wallow in conspiracy theories as he did for about a month...You can't stir up that type of hatred -- calling the president a racist -- and then say, 'Oh, I'm just a rodeo clown.'"
It's interesting that suddenly other talking heads are speaking against Beck. What's changed?

Ohhh sorry I did miss it... If you mean full scale hydrogen power, no I do not really see that working except in special circumstances. In a place like iceland that has a tone of readily available geothermal power and a small population it may be practical.
However, splitting water takes a huge amount of power. You would have to have very large energy intensive hydrogen plants to do it. For our grid and population the numbers don't work out IMHO.
To power those plants, you would need to switch to something like nuclear anyway. At that point, why not just have an electric vehicle?
The torque on them is monstrous, you get awesome performance and you aren't carrying around a large tank of explosive gas.
In that special I linked to is a pure electric roadster that looks like a car from Star Wars, goes 0-60 in 4 secs and has a range of 250 miles. It is available today, but expensive @90K. As batteries get better and cheaper and the new batteries from ANL are developed, (these new batteries exist and have triple the energy density as ones in current production) such cars will only get cheaper and perform even better.

If you take the amount of influence they're exerting with the GOP right now, it isn't apples and oranges. Both have done a fair amount of damage, both continually embarrass themselves, yet they maintain a lot of influence within the party. Right now, for example, Gov. Rick Perry is channeling the Beck, and people within the party reliably apologize to/for Limbaugh. Perhaps Beck will burn out faster, but hes done an incredible amount of harm in the time his star has burned brightly.

Ok, I relly do have to go, but we filmed the scene by having the "victim" laid on the ground and the camera on the floor about 5 feet from his head so tht you were looking "down" at his body, i.e. saw his shoulders and the top of his "head".
The head was a plastic and latex construct on a stick so it could "waggle" by an operator out of the shot, and was filled with liver and cow brains from the butcher shop.
That way it could look like he was struggling and he could waggle his arms and legs - and then go spastic as the sander came down on his "face"
It was a delightful mess and surprisingly convincing.
My buddy, who was the victim sold it just right with the twitches and then getting very stiff.
Three people from the film class had to leave :)

The Eldorado Cadillac driven by Priest was owned by KC, the pimp who makes an appearance in the nightclub scene. The deal was that KC would get a part in the movie (in the opening credit it says "and introducing: KC") in exchange for the use of his car.
Financing for the film came from two dentists and Gordon Parks father of the film's director Gordon Parks Jr..
The script was only 45 pages long, which explains why there are so many shots of people walking, driving, etc.
Star Ron O'Neal didn't like the cocaine montage. In an E! True Hollywood Story interview, he said it so glorified drug use, the montage was akin to a "commercial for cocaine."

You can, for instance, trace the disillusionment of Americans with scientists and the government through monster and sci-fi movies, from the essentially benign view of scientists, and belief in the government's ability to deal with threats, in films like "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Thing," "Them," and the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," to a belief that scientists are fools and government for the most part ineffectual when it is not actively malevolent in more recent movies.
It's very interesting, and sometimes rather disheartening.

I like what Lomborg has to say a lot. I haven't read his book, but I've seen some lectures he's given (I think one is here.)
His basic argument is that AGW will cost trillions of dollars per % of CO2 to fix, so the money is better off spent on adapting to climate change, with the excess being spent on more immediate problems (like poverty and health problems). Humans should transition to cleaner energy sources over the next century.

I wrote a letter to my HR department complaining that in the recent diversity training we had to take, the person shown performing the wrong behavior was in every case a white male and I found this offensive and demeaning to white males. I haven't heard back from them yet, but they pulled the training down.

Yes. Thank you. I believe I saw a documentary on Judy Garland where it was supposedly her lifelong dream to dance with Astaire and she certainly seems to be having a good time there.

I noticed that this video had a commercial at the end. A loud one. I don't know what it was because I was banging on the stop button and swearing because it was deactivated.

Sorry for the late answer. I was watching the Hannah Montana movie with my niece - her present for being a brave girl when they took out her appendix last week.
In Maryland we have something call the "duty to retreat". If someone breaks into your house, and they're armed, and you're armed, you still don't automatically get to shoot them. If you can resolve the situation by running away and leaving the field to the bad guy, you can, under certain circumstances, be held responsible for not doing so.
Sound crazy? It is. And it's reason no. 1,933,842 that I'm moving away.
