Radical Anti-Choice Personhood Groups Host ‘Presidential Pro-Life Forum’

It’s a fundamentalist fanatic-fest
Wingnuts • Views: 36,692

The radical anti-choice movement called “Personhood” is holding a “National Presidential Pro-Life Forum” tonight in Iowa, sponsored by a collection of the farthest right religious groups in America.

Attending this gathering of fanatics: Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry. It’s being broadcast on the radio show of Iowa religious talk show host Steve Deace.

I just hit the start button on the live feed, and wouldn’t you know it — Deace was ranting about the evils of Charles Darwin, and gasping that the atheist Brits even put him on their money.

This should be a hoot; the mainstream media don’t want to ask these candidates any questions about evolution, but maybe the fanatics will. Guaranteed to produce a few quotable howlers.

I love creationists because their whole argument relies on denying God's omnipotent status.

This will be a hoot.

Hmm. I don't know if this radio feed is going to have the Forum or not. The email I got from Personhood (yes, they put me on their list for some reason) says it's starting at 8 pm Central. I guess we'll find out soon.

Deace has an odd biographical statement on his site:

Steve Deace barely made it out of community college in one piece, and then loosely attended a real college for a while.

We say he only attended because there's no record of him actually accomplishing anything while he was there, or at least anything he wants to tell his three children about before they're 21 years old. By the grace of God he managed to find a woman that would put up with him, his wife Amy who daily exhibits the patience of Job. Because he's not that educated, Deace actually believes the Bible is literally true and the Constitution isn't a living, breathing document. He also knows way more about superheroes, Star Wars & Star Trek, and college football than any man not living under a vow of perpetual virginity in his mom's basement should.

The last Dem Primaray was pretty bad. I wasn't a big fan of the Iraq war but I did want some sort of "victory" ending with a somewhat stable country left behind. The Dem debates were a race to see who could abandon Iraq the in the fastest most reckless manner. I think it was Edwards who trumped them all by eventually proposing a complete withdrawal in something like 30 days by just evacuating personnel and leaving all the military equipment and munitions behind. I like Obama much more a s president than a candidate. If he campaigned the way he rules now I would have certainly voted for him.

We love women.....in the same way we love our children and our pets, that is, they are required to obey us, and if they do so, they have our affection. If they don't they are sinners. Jesus loved sinners. So I guess they love sinners, but have an odd way of showing it.

"National Presidential Pro-Life Forum"

163,000,000
That's the estimated number of orphans worldwide. It's a pretty big number and can seem overwhelming. Some of these orphans have lost one parent, some have lost both. Some are "virtual" orphans meaning they have been turned out onto the streets by their families due to widespread poverty and the inability to feed their entire family. What matters is that they are vulnerable and in need of help. Without assistance these orphans continue the cycle of poverty, HIV/AIDS, trafficking, prostitution and slavery that haunts developing countries. By getting involved in World Orphans you can help break this cycle, put a child back in a family, and put him or her on the road to success.

i hear that these children are also alive. perhaps the "pro-life forum" could take some time to think about them

It is non surgical and it is generally no better or worse than surgical abortion. Though apparently in the early part of the first trimester it is preferred. There is no reason to suggest that it is any more problematic for the right to lifers than surgical abortion. In the US, the cost is similar for both.

I would not be able to name a "favorite song."

For example, if I could listen to any song live, it would be the Battle Hymn of the Republic sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. If you have never sat through that, or only heard it recorded, you'd think I was being corny.

'Transformation': Perry now opposes all abortion, even in rape or incest cases

OSCEOLA, Iowa -- In what the Texas governor calls a "transformation," Rick Perry on Tuesday said that he has reversed his acceptance of abortion in some severe circumstances, saying that he now opposes the procedure even in cases of rape and incest.

Perry said the change came after seeing the "Gift of Life" film produced by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. He told an audience of Iowans at Clark Electric Co-op in Osceola that he was moved by the story of a woman who introduced the film during a screening earlier this month in Des Moines

My fav song in the world is America The Beautiful.

You are pitiful if you think we believe this drivel.

The National Anthem of the United States is, of course, the Star Spangled Banner.
The National Hymn, on the other hand, is not America, The Beautiful. It's something you (or Glenn Beck) have never heard of, God Of Our Fathers. It's just dreck. And every time the Dems propose that America The Beautiful be the National Hymn, the Reps get their thongs all up in a twist.

And just if you don't know, The Star Spangled Banner is best sung drunk since Key stole the melody from an English drinking song.

Really? Really Mitt? This is ridiculous. There are only two options here:

1. Mitt is lying. Why? You could say any normal mainstream song in the world, even a classical piece and people would be cool with it and respect it. America the Beautiful is a terrible and obvious pander for no reason at all. Hell, you need help with the Real True Christians, so pick a hymn!

2. Mitt is telling the truth. I honestly don't even know what to think if this were actually the case.

It is amazing to me that this man wants to be President so bad that he can't even be honest about something so inconsequential.

For those looking for some interesting reading for the period right before the Civil War, the current issue of Military History Quarterly has a pair of good articles. One on John Brown's fighting in Kansas, and the other follows Robert E. Lee through his command of the force of militia and Marines sent to defeat Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry.

Interesting take away: Of the 5 Harper's Ferry raiders who escaped, three later joined the Union army, but only one of those three survived the Civil War. Neither of the other two died in battle, one dying of fever in during Burnside's North Carolina Coastal campaign, and the other being killed in a train wreck caused by Rebel sabotage.

I don't know about Mitt's favorite song, but I know Credence Clearwater Revival supplied the right song for Ron Paul's rise in the polls:

i guess i have a lot of favorite songs, but here's a good one:

Only a poor man was laz’rus that day
When he lay down at the rich man’s gate.
He begged for the crumbs of the rich man to eat;
He was only a tramp found dead on the street.

He was some mother’s darlin’, he was some mother’s son;
Once he was fair, and once he was young.
Some mother rocked him, her little baby, to sleep;
But they left him to die like a tramp on the street.

Townhall is highlighting the latest Buchanan column "Whose Country Is It Anyway" in which PaleoPat concludes:

What are these Christmas-bashers, though still a nominal minority, saying to Christians with their mockery and ridicule of the celebration of the birth of Christ?

"This isn't your country anymore. It is our country now."

The question for Christians is a simple one: Do they have what it takes to take America back?

Finally, someone admits what all this Tea Partying talk of taking "America back" is all about - religious war. Explicitly, Buchanan admits that "taking back" America means making the US a clearly Christian nation.

It took them long enough to admit it.

Yeah, because people totally cite the French Revolution as a complete success and not as a total travesty of mob violence. And describe their side as "drunken executioners" with "rusty saws."

I strongly suspect that you're missing the snark in this statement (which only got 3 updings even if it was sincere).

And you're not mentioning statements like:

he isn't calling for violence, he is saying it is (15+ / 0-)
inevitable due to what has happened and as the vast majority wake up
totally different than a call for violence

More violent revolution pr0n. (5+ / 0-)
We always see this "there will be violence" crap being spewed, but people are never willing to identify who will be committing this violence.
If the target is Wall Street (as opposed to the government) then one would suppose it would be people from the left.
But, no, no, no, the revolution pr0nographers maintain, it will be the masses.
Hate to disappoint, but there is simply not that sense of physical anger out there in the general populace. If it were going to happen, it would have happened by now.
People are disenchanted, yes. But, ready to burn down buildings and riot in the streets? Nope.

NO to violence (10+ / 0-)
No to "violence is inevitable" meme. Just NO.
Non-violent resistance is powerful and necessary. Gandhi, King, Mandela, etc. were right. Not this guy, however correct on the notion of usurious and illegitimate oligarchs.
Anger yes. Organized, insistent reform yes. Mobs and violence -- eff no.

he isn't calling for violence, he is saying it is (15+ / 0-)
inevitable due to what has happened and as the vast majority wake up
totally different than a call for violence

No to 'violence inevitable' meme (6+ / 0-)
No. No Ron Paul 'coming race war', no Palin 'death panels', no 'gays prey on our kids and GI Joes', no 'lock and re-load because Obama's after our guns'.
No. No rhetoric of violence simply to justify a posture of violence. And to normalize the idea of violence. NO.
So no, no 'oligarchs will inevitably have their houses burned down.' Just -- no.

I don't support violent action (11+ / 0-)
But count me in as believing it is inevitable. I just can't pretend things will turn out differently.

No to violence (2+ / 0-)
I read this diary and the comments (so far, up to this one) and I see the rotten way this society, this global community, has been systematically manipulated into a neo-feudal society, with the 1% taking the cake and leaving crumbs to the 99%. I understand the anger. I hate the injustice of it all. I am the 99%.
However, I do not think violence, "castle burnings," pitchforks, anarchy is the way to change things.

301 The Gender Ambiguity of a Flea  Tue, Dec 27, 2011 8:59:38pm

and here's the funny bit;

My father is 67, a Marine and a Republican. (63+ / 0-)
There's no love lost between himself and hippies of any sort (the greatest disappointment of his life was that his son turned out to be a hippie--but we've worked through that), but OWS has really opened his eyes.
He told me how he NEVER thought the United States would end up like this: with limited oppprtunities for most and almost all the money in the hands of a few.
"I respect these kids' non-violent approach," he said to me. "But do you really think the richies are gonna just give back what they stole? Hell, no. They're gonna have to have it TAKEN from them, by force. It's gonna get ugly. And all we can hope is that it doesn't get French Revolution ugly."
By the way, if you're wondering, he also said "I ain't votin' for NONE o' them crazy fuckers this time. They're not Republicans. They're just plain-ass crazy."

What's lacking in the KosKids comments that's present in the elaborately detailed fantasies of Breitbart, Beck (who's written multiple novels based around fantasies of right wingers using political violence to save America), Bill O'Reilly (another novel writer) and the consumer base that supports them is that element of arousal--that porn-y anticipation and excitement at the prospect of what's oncoming.

Except this one douche:

Burn. It. The. Fuck. Down. (2+ / 0-)
Burn it the fuck down.
Burn it the fuck down!

Oh Chicago, this story is full of "Fail":

2 dentists sue colleague for criticizing their bite-mark testimony
[Link: www.chicagotribune.com...]

In the ongoing battle over the use of controversial bite-mark evidence, two Chicago-area dentists have opened a new legal front, suing a colleague for alleged defamation because he used a Lake County rape case they worked on as an example of the oft-criticized discipline gone awry.

Dentists Russell Schneider, of Waukegan, and Carl Hagstrom, of Fox Lake, filed their lawsuit against Michael Bowers, a dentist in California who is a frequent and sometimes acerbic critic of his fellow forensic odontologists for work that has led to numerous wrongful convictions.
.....
Schneider and Hagstrom examined evidence for Lake County prosecutors in the case against Bennie Starks, who was convicted in 1986 of pulling a 69-year-old Waukegan woman into a ravine and beating and raping her. Schneider and Hagstrom testified at trial that they compared Starks' teeth to a bite mark on the woman's shoulder, and that there was a match.

Starks was convicted and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He has maintained his innocence.

In 2006, after Starks had served nearly 20 years, the Illinois Appellate Court granted him a new trial because DNA tests excluded him as the source of semen on the victim's underwear; that evidence, the court said, showed that a crime-lab analyst had presented false evidence at trial.

The appeals court did not rule on the bite-mark evidence. Examinations of Schneider and Hagstrom's work by two dentists retained by Starks' attorneys concluded their work was flawed; those two dentists said Schneider and Hagstrom mistook the upper jaw for the lower and the lower for the upper.

"The victim was attacked by one person who sexually assaulted her. We know that wasn't Bennie Starks, so it wasn't Bennie Starks who bit her," said Jed Stone, one of Starks' attorneys. "There is no other interpretation of this evidence that makes any sense and isn't completely fanciful."

tl;dr: DNA exonerates the guy they said did it. They get criticized for their work and sue. Full story with lots of background:

Speaking of lousy news, Reuters misses the mark on their story about the IN girl that went missing right before xmas:

Police say neighbor confessed in death of Indiana girl
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

What they missed:
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- To assist her dying father, Tarah Souders made a choice: She moved her three young girls to a run-down trailer park in rural Indiana to help take care of him as his lungs rotted from emphysema.

She knew it could be dangerous. The park of about two dozen homes was teeming with convicted sex offenders, with one living at nearly every address.

She worried about neighbors with sex offense records who had been helping her father get by, according to trailer park residents. And before she arrived, she even asked her father if her children could be at risk for abuse from two specific men -- including a suspect now accused in her daughter's death.

"He said, 'No. They will not touch your children. They're doing everything they're supposed to do,' " said Greg Shumaker, one of 15 convicted sex offenders who live at the park and the other man Souders had inquired about.

She left her kids in a trailer park full of sex offenders for a week because she had the flu and so her husband could sleep during the day somewhere else.

Marine shot three times in street robbery survives... by plugging bullet holes with his fingers
[Link: www.dailymail.co.uk...]

Lieutenant Colonel Karl Trenker, 29, of Miramar, Florida, was shot three times as he confronted two men who had stolen a gold chain from him.
.....
He said the confrontation with the robbers took place after his girlfriend Tanta Siaz advertised a gold chain for sale on Craigslist.

The U.S. Marine said he volunteered to carry out the sale and drove to an apartment complex to meet the potential buyers.

As he showed off the necklace one of the men shoved him and grabbed the jewellery.

Lt Colonel Trenker said he chased after the two men when one of them turned round and opened fire, hitting him multiple times.

He said he plugged the bullet holes while calling his girlfriend on his cell phone and calmly telling her: ‘I've been shot.’

Lt Colonel Trenker said: ‘I dialled my phone and called my fiancée and said, 'Listen I've been shot I think three times.

That's pretty badass. It also explains how he could be a LTC at just 29 years old.

Like the mentally disturbed that are "much better now" and released from the institution. Should there be any restrictions on them? My thinking on this is if someone committed a violent crime with a gun then they should not be able to own a gun "legally" for the rest of their lives. On the other hand if they committed a crime but didn't use a gun in the commission of the crime then after they server their time they should have the right to own a gun.

The case by case idea is the best. This whole "one size fits all" justice is bullshit. Mandatory sentencing and all that is garbage. If mandatory sentencing is the case, just do away with judges and lawyers and everyone gets convicted according to a Chinese menu layout (crime in column A, punishment in column B). To hell with jury of our peers, it will be justice by committee (scary part is just who is on that committee).

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Only now that Perry and Newt are unable to get on the VA ballot is Perry now suing to try and get on the ballot. He claims that the VA election law is too restrictive (even though he's a state's right kind of guy - and Virginia is within its rights to demand that someone trying to get on the ballot must secure signatures from all districts). Getting those signatures requires a ground game, and both Newt and Perry failed miserably.

Oh, and Newt lives in Virginia. He's trying to mount a write-in campaign, but Virginia doesn't accept write-in ballots.

That leaves only Mitt and Paul on the ballot in Virginia. Yes, you read that one correctly. Everyone else has ceded Virginia to these two candidates as flawed as they are. And figuring that Mitt wins handily, these other numbskulls have given Mitt a 100 delegate advantage (50+ to Mitt, -50 to themselves right out of the gate).

If the average GOP voter's first priority is anyone but Obama, they're not going to look all that closely at whoever is running on the GOP slate in the national election. Similarly, for the primaries, they might choose a candidate that fits their bill (or in the subset of anyone but Romney, will pick the current "frontrunner not named Romney"). The funeral, and the mourning, appeared to have been meticulously choreographed by the government to strengthen the cult of personality underpinning the Kim family’s rule. it depends... I do believe people can change for the better.

I admire your optimism, but unfortunately reality has this nagging habit of proving right the old proverb "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." While some may truly change for the better, others will not, and still others will until they have one "bad day" and decide that their new girlfriend has burnt dinner for the last time.

Increasingly, journalists in the U.S. are losing their jobs because of their "politically incorrect" statements. Thus, in June 2010 under pressure from influential Jewish circles the legendary H. Thomas, who dared to criticize Israel's actions in regard to "freedom flotilla", was forced to retire.

Not really; there's eternal talk of having an English anthem (either Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory) separate from the British anthem. Both of those are specifically English songs, rather than British ones - if we were to replace GSTQ for the British national anthem, the only British patriotic song is "Rule, Britannia!", which makes the Star Spangled Banner sound easy to sing.

Most of the people doing the bugging are doing it for very good reasons. The mistake is to think there is such a thing as information privacy. It used to take government-sized resources to do large-scale intercepts, then some fool invented the integrated circuit.

re: #462 Gus 802

Is it really surprising that the CIA is using its SIGINT capabilities to scan for communications that might lead to a terror attack? Not in the slightest - they've been monitoring communications for decades, but the issue is cross-jurisdictional communications and those originating and ending in the US proper. Twitter may not be the best way to coordinate/plan/carry out a terror attack, but terrorists may not be the brightest bunch. It's pretty easy to sort though the chatter if you have the right search parameters, and EPIC's requests would severely undermine efforts to protect against a possible attack planned - or give terrorists potential information about US capabilities.

However, it is problematic that Twitter is a cross-jurisdictional platform - there's no way to tell whether something is domestic or foreign and the CIA isn't supposed to spy on Americans domestically. That would suggest that the FBI is also involved/coordinating with the CIA.

Still, this seems to be overblown CIA-derangement syndrome.

Of course, if the CIA fails to catch a Twitter posting signaling a terror attack, these will be among the first to claim a conspiracy and/or call for heads to roll at the CIA for failing to carry out eavesdropping of these same communications.

My sense is that bots simply gather all such links and feed them to some IA that then weighs the significance. I'm sure mentions of Osama, etc. also go there (even though everybody tweets them). I.e. it's not about monitoring specific accounts or such.

Because it's the CIA. They spy. Therefore, it's spying. /

See how that works.

BTW, something similar is going on with the analysis of the North Korean power structure. The CIA and everyone else is trying to figure out who's who in the power structure based on who's standing/sitting/walking in relation to Kim Jong-il's remains during today's funeral. They don't have much else to go on.

Who is definitely out of the loop: Kim Jong-un's brothers and sisters.
Who's definitely in the power loop: Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-un's uncle (the brother-in-law to Jong-il). Jong-un's aunt.

495 Gus  Wed, Dec 28, 2011 7:45:52am

Here's another:

A Conspiracy Theory Takes Off

FEMA camp stories have been around a long time. Almost three decades ago, back in 1982, a newsletter of the extreme-right and anti-Semitic Posse Comitatus warned that “hardcore Patriots” would be imprisoned in FEMA detention camps. Some versions during the militia heyday of the 1990s had urban street gangs like the Bloods and the Crips, rather than domestic or foreign troops, rounding up antigovernment patriots.

Conspiracy theorists often point to a front-page story in The Miami Herald back in 1987 as proof that, in the words of one of them, “FEMA is the executive arm of the coming police state and thus will head up all operations.” The story reported that between 1982 and 1984, Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North had helped draft a secret contingency plan to suspend the Constitution in the event of a national crisis, such as nuclear war, violent and widespread domestic dissent, or national opposition to a U.S. military invasion abroad. North would later become infamous for his part in the Iran-Contra affair, in which weapons were sold to intermediaries in Iran with the proceeds used to fund antigovernment “contra” rebels in Nicaragua.

The plan was written for President Ronald Reagan in case he ever wanted to take such action. The newspaper also obtained a copy of a FEMA official’s 1982 memo that it reported was similar to a paper then-FEMA director Louis Guiffrida had written 12 years earlier. In the 1970 document, Guiffrida reportedly advocated martial law in case of a national uprising by black militants and the transferring of at least 21 million “American Negroes” to “assembly centers or relocations camps.”

During the Iran-Contra hearings in 1987, Texas congressman Jack Brooks asked North about the newspaper’s findings. But Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, who chaired the Senate Select Committee on Iran-Contra, rapidly silenced him, telling the Democratic congressman he was getting into a “highly sensitive and classified area.” That was further proof of their claims, conspiracy buffs contend.

But FEMA and its alleged plans for freedom-loving Americans are not the only government conspiracies that so-called Patriots and their fellow travelers love to hate. In a related vein, they also point to numerous presidential executive orders that they claim will allow the suspension of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Hurricane Katrina's the earliest I remember. FEMA started building more permanent facilities for victims of natural disasters, including barracks facilities and such. The conspiracy nuts got wind, threw a few pictures on the net, and started accusing FEMA of setting up prison camps for political dissidents, which would be used upon the declaration of a national state of martial law.

The parts of the FEMA mission that are a hangover from the Cold War Civil Defense agencies have some out-of-the-ordinary legal powers. That's necessary for a total SHTF situation, but it fed the paranoia of the nutcases.

That's a big part of it. The CIA is monitoring trends too - if searches, hashtags, etc. become more used, it might signal a change in policy, seriousness of issue, etc., warranting further examination by other assets - think of how tags, keywords were used during the Arab Spring - with usage increasing as the situation became more serious and widespread.

re: #384 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

So you believe that, once released from prison, a felon should have no restrictions placed upon them? That once you leave prison, society is to treat you as though you did nothing wrong to begin with?

Yes, ideally.

But you're hitting the classic point of friction of dealing with criminals. Punishment or rehabilitation? Can a leopard change its spots?

A very unfortunate reality is that the punishment as we've set it up - not just in the US, but much of the world - works against rehabilitation. I say unfortunate because rehabilitation works. Even worse, the treatment of released criminals reinforces negative behavior, aka recidivism.

The ugly caveat to that statement is that this isn't a perfect world. Rehab MOSTLY works, but there are individuals who will repeat and even increase their criminality.

The more the needle moves from rehab to punishment (both in and after prison) the greater the recidivism. Again, however, messy reality arrives. There are some who won't repeat, regardless.

There is also a small portion -- very small compared to the other end, but it exists -- that will stop because of the punishment but are otherwise unable to be rehabilitated.

All those things considered (plus a lot of boring details) explain my opening answer. Yes, I think that when a criminal has served his time he should have all his rights and responsibilities restored -- the right to vote, the right to carry firearms, the right to not have to bare his breast, all of it. The reason is that this causes lower levels of recidivism.

Oh, the boogieman "child molester" (and the slightly lesser brother "sex offender"). Reality check: despite conventional wisdom they do not have a higher than normal rate of recidivism. But the crime is so heinous we tend to lose our minds on the subject. It's the easiest button to press. ahem, "Think of the children".

My final point (this and I'll close) is a caveat. I said yes. HOWEVER, I also think it's not yes alone. I think we should move the needle from punishment to rehab, and that includes post-imprisonment rehab. For child molesters/sex offenders that includes counseling. The stick should always linger and be available -- fail, or violate, the rehab and spend some more time in prison. When rehab fails, when the individual shows they cannot or will not change, they should be removed from society. Not into eternal punishment, but where they cannot inflict any more harm on the innocent (or at least allegedly innocent).

An anecdote supporting this last . There are offenders who should stay in prison. I have one example. I won't name his name, but he was an inmate at the prison in which I worked. He raped his two year old daughter. If it came up, he claimed it was because he was on LSD at the time. Except, when he finally served his time and got out (but was still on parole) he raped his three year old grand-niece. Again, "it wasn't him, it was the drugs". I am not against permanent incarceration.

I certainly agree with the ideal situation being one weighted rehabilitation rather than strictly punishment, but there should likewise be some measure of caution mixed in, that some rights should be earned back rather than simply given back as a package deal. Voting rights, sure, let them have it back upon release. But ownership of a firearm, especially if the felony involved was violent and/or involved a firearm, should be restricted for a period of time or even permanently.

Sure it is, if you watch, play, or read enough cyberpunk material. Off the top of my head, Deus Ex provides the best "example" of why such theories are entertained, namely that the disease is manufactured alongside its cure, with the distribution of the cure linked to either usefulness to the "New Order" or to weed out "undesirables." The subsequent collapse of society allows the government to further tighten control, either alone or in service to its corporate masters, speeding along the installation of the "New Order" in order to restore civilization as well as providing an excuse to "quarantine" those "undesirables."

Suggested countermeasures:

1. Install systems allowing Internet and cell service in a transportation system to be disabled in case of mass protests.

2. Remove personal information of key government workers (police and firefighters especially) from network accessibility. This would involve disconnecting some computers from their networks and in other cases setting up networks that have no connection to the larger Internet.

3. Expand law enforcement training for riot control and set up facilities in other major cities to hold detainees from mass arrests.

The e-mail advises customers that all passwords were blocked as a security precaution to prevent misuse of user accounts. SpecialForces.com was unavailable for comment, and attempts to contact purported victims of the Anonymous hack were unsuccessful.

Anonymous members were apparently motivated to attack SpecialForces.com because, the hackers believe, the site's customers are largely "military and law enforcement affiliated individuals." The attack on SpecialForces.com is part of a larger Anonymous hacking campaign called LulzXmas.

Yes, though the V for Vendetta film bears little resemblance to its graphic novel source material. In the novel, new government came about as a result of a far different 80s, where Thatcher was voted out and the new government subsequently pursuing nuclear disarmament. So that when the US and Soviets inevitably let the nukes fly, Britain survived intact as a noncombatant, but was essentially cut off from much of the world. In the aftermath, a more authoritarian, fascist government came to power in order to "protect" Britain.

The best point's already been made. If they've not rehabilitated, they will find the firearm whether it is legal or not. Simultaneously, you're telling the felon he's a second class citizen. Once the rehab is complete his rights should be restored. All his rights.

Again, however, the way our system is set up at this time we don't do rehab. Thus we create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Because it's punishment over rehab, recidivism is high, and so doing things like restricting firearms make sense. In simple, we won't fix the underlying problem so we have to put on these less effective patches.

And that's where you and I seem to be agreeing, that rehabilitation should be the goal and should be the primary focus of incarceration. But we don't do that now, so as you've pointed out, we must rely upon patches to avoid danger to citizens when these ex-cons act out again. It's a problem with how we handle felons while incarcerated that must be addressed before we return their rights to them, not the other way around.

The Israel Air Force, working with the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), launched two missile attacks against terrorist groups in Gaza Tuesday night, killing at least three and, according Palestinian reports, injuring at least 11. Several hours later, Palestinians fired a Kassam rocket from inside Gaza but it exploded inside the Strip.

Hamas identified the man killed in the earlier strike as Abdullah Telbani, an operative of World Jihad's Saraya Al-Quds wing in his 20s.

re: #552 sattv4u2

Once the rehab is complete his rights should be restored. All his rights.

Is the 'rehab" complete upon his release from prison? If so, then you're arguing against a released felon checking in (periodically) with a probation officer. If you beleive he should be checking in then he's still (in your words) a "second class citizen"

Under the current system imprisonment and rehab are nowhere near the same thing. As I said, we're using patches.

End of imprisonment is not necessarily end of rehab. In fact in the cases where effective programs exist it's almost never at the end of imprisonment.

Effective rehab programs have multiple stages, not all of which are required. These stages include isolation (separation from opportunity - imprisonment) usually with high-intensity counseling and training, high-frequency counseling without isolation, moderate frequency counseling, low frequency counseling, and 'on demand' counseling. Rehab tends to be complete during the low frequency counseling, and the most effective (aka lowest recidivism) programs tend to allow 'full opportunity' in conjunction with that stage. Oh - the last stage is the only voluntary section. It's "Oh, crap, I need a fix. Help me." Hmmm, and sometimes isolation is brought back into play in the later stages.

The phrase, as noted by others earlier, is "case by case".

Lots of gotchas and limits and controls exist (despite the common belief that counselors are touchie feelie idiots out of touch with reality). For example, it's fairly common knowledge that rehab only occurs when the offender admits he has a problem. Canny offenders will wail at how bad they were not to start rehab but to get out of this place and away from these people. As a result there are a lot of tests, particularly tests that watch for secondary behaviors that have high coincidence with the offense.

The problem with rehab done right is it doesn't run on a schedule. Done right you do stage one till you're ready for stage two, when ready moving to stage three, and only done when done. Our system, however, is set up "on the clock". The incarceration lasts x months/years regardless. Probation is the same.

Probation is our patch-equivalent to non-isolation rehab. So while the offender is on probation - in rehab - he's not ready for full rights and responsibilities.

The second-class citizenship comes when he's done with probation but STILL can't get a firearm or is restricted from voting or must stay on the publicly accessible offender list or... you get the idea. Again, they're patches we have to use because we won't make the effort to 'do it right'.

I'm not saying they never kill Americans in the US, but when they do, it's usually done by gangs in big city settings, blending in with the rest of the drug-trade violence. "Nothing frightening" seen in Syria protest hotbed: monitor

(Reuters) - The chief Arab League monitor in Syria said he saw "nothing frightening" on a first visit to the battered protest hotbed of Homs but France called his remarks premature and urged Syria to guarantee his team free movement.

The second day of monitoring hit a snag when locals in the Homs neighborhood of Baba Amr, that has been pounded by tanks in a military crackdown on popular unrest, refused to speak with the observers in the presence of a Syrian army colonel.

The monitors aborted the visit to the district, where dozens of protesters have been killed by government tanks and snipers, and armed insurgents have shot back to protect the locals.

What a waste of time. As soon as the Arab League monitors leave the killings will go on again.

the War on Drugs is the new Cold War.

In some ways I think it's worse than the Cold War. [At least in this hemisphere.] It's not entirely cold, and the victims in the US are people who are locked up for years on drug charges, and the victims in Mexico are being slaughtered wholesale. It's not just the military-industrial complex that perpetuates it, it's Big Pharma, which stands to lose billions of dollars if marijuana is legalized. Basic reason my brother is a practicing vegetarian. He'll eat meat if he knows the source and how said animal was raised and fed. Otherwise, there's simply a lot of abuse via the feedlot system and mass butchering used in the current US system.

He also believes in local buying and farming for longterm substainability. Along these lines he maintains a small flock of laying chickens. Sufficient eggs for home use, plus enough extras to sell/trade with neighbors and friends.

Before the talk of a boycott happened on Thursday, it looked like GoDaddy was losing about 13,000 to 15,000 domains a day anyway. shooting themselves in the foot in the process.

I relate it to the tobacco industry. They had the perfect drug in many respects and instead of researching it and trying to produce products that could carry the industry for centuries, they chose short-term profits and decades of lawsuits.

In the long run, they are paying lots of lawyers, losing market share in the US, are vilified by everyone and in the long term, ran themselves into the ground.

No. It's the overt focus and singling out of GoDaddy. There's plenty of other organizations that are supporting SOPA. GoDaddy just became a trend and quickly turned into yet another fashion statement. And since there were already outstanding issues between the left and GoDaddy it turned into a case similar to what could be called confirmation bias. And if you're on Twitter for any extended period you would be able to see the intensity of this focus with GoDaddy alone. It's as if though others don't exist. Private prisons are one of my hot buttons. They are one of the excellent examples of why some missions are better done by the state, not by private industry.

Their base cost per inmate is less for the state than for the state doing it. Their TCO, of which recidivism is only part, is greater. There's a larger rate of in-facility violence, more escapes, and higher recidivism rates. These (among other things) lead to a larger number of lawsuits in which the government is still a defendant -- and private prisons lose more often that state run facilities due to shortcuts taken to increase the profits.

State and federal run prisons aren't great - in fact, some are cesspools that need major cleaning. But on average they are better than private prisons.

How did Israeli pencils reach Saudi chain?

Saudi authorities are investigating how Israeli pencils reached one of the kingdom's biggest retail chains. The Kravitz chain, which markets the pencils in Israel, was surprised to hear about the affair stirring up the Gulf kingdom.

It turns out that Abu Rialin, a Saudi chain which offers all of its items for two riyals, is selling one of Kravitz's most popular products – a set of 12 pencils with an eraser.

The pencils are sold with the Kravitz logo in Hebrew and without any attempt to conceal the fact that they are made in Israel.

Kravitz learned about the incident following a report published by Saudi website Jazan. The reporter noted that Kravitz was the biggest manufacturer of office supplies in Israel and asked how the Saudi Ministry of Commerce could overlook such a thing.

"Where are the Saudi kingdom's supervision authorities?" the reporter asks, calling for an investigation into the apparent marketing of an Israeli product in Saudi Arabia.

The focus on one company is out of Saul Alinsky's playbook: "Pick a target, personalize it, and polarize it." He based that idea out of a decent (though at times flawed) understanding of human nature: People respond much better if you cite one individual company as your target (preferable one with high visibility), rather than a whole raft of them.

Fixations can also occur naturally as part of the same mental processes. this post should not be read as saying that the people concerned about Internet legislation are motivated by Alinsky's writings, indeed for the most part they do not know who he was. I was just explaining the logic of targeting one company, no more, no less.

The clause I highlighted is actually the problem.

The "debt to society" is often a euphemism for "make the bastard pay for his sins." In other words, punish him.

Should there be punishment? yes. But long grind punishments are counter-productive. Instead of creating remorse they create resentment.

It is and is not the same thing to think about punishment for animals and children that misbehave. If a dog gets spanked every day for a month because it peed on the carpet, it's not going to associate the punishment with the crime.

Here we go again, as the Republican contenders for the GOP nomination attempt to out-wingnut each other, oblivious to the realization that their untenable views may win them the nomination battle, but will most certainly cost them the general election war.

But we need a True Believer to save America from the Seekrit Mooslim Overlord!

Why do you hate America?

Quite frankly, that's the best thing for the GOP. Nominate a True Believer, get stomped in the general election by Obama, and then MAYBE the adults in the room will start cleaning house of all the religious fanatics and idiot nutjobs that are destroying the Republican party.

No, they will just say the nominee "wasn't a real conservative" and insist that if only they nominate someone even more extreme can they win.

U.S. Fifth Fleet says won't allow disruption in Hormuz

DUBAI | Wed Dec 28, 2011 10:32am EST

(Reuters) - The U.S. Fifth Fleet said on Wednesday it will not allow any disruption of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran threatened to stop ships moving through the strategic oil route.

The sound of steel creaking.

More likely, the numbskulls would decide that the ass-whupping meant they weren't conservative enough, and double down with even more insane candidates.

I really don't trust anyone in the Republican party to make anything even closely resembling a rational decision any more. I just don't think they're capable of doing so.

So, as we slowly inch closer to a shooting war with Iran, I guess this is as good a time as any to fill up gas tanks and gas cans.

Which would only serve to further marginalize the Republican party.

I can't say that would bother me much. If they're going to be extremist nutjobs, then let them wander the political wilderness until a more rational party comes along.

None of this means there will be a shooting war. It increases the chances obviously. One day at a time. They announced their call for a blockade. We responded. It's their call.

I have to laugh when I see the NRO and Weekly Standard geniuses complaining that their "A team" is not on the field, and that is why they are getting no positive attention. They just don't get it.

The fault lies not in their stars, but in themselves.

Easy for Iran to make threats. Far more difficult for them to carry through with the threats. It's also for their domestic consumption, and to keep oil prices high (their chief export and money-maker).

Think it'll all come down to Congress next year. I think many in the leadership have already resigned themselves to losing the presidency and are now instead focused on tightening their grip on the House and possibly taking back the Senate. If they fail in either case, it might be the splash of cold water they truly need.

If Iran's real goal is to plug the Strait, then sinking a few ships there would accomplish it nicely. Goading us into doing the sinking, even better to convince the folks back in Tehran that the US is the aggressor and play "rally 'round the flag."

The Koskidz violent revolution fantasy thread is still on the rec list. A brave and rare voice of dissent....

What the hell is wrong with all of you? (1+ / 0-)
I read post after post welcoming a bloody revolution as the solution to our problems? Do any of you understand that we're far beyond the pitchforks and garden implements of the past and we now have cheap and horrific weaponry where a violent punk with no fighting or intellectual skills can now take out a small city with the pull of a trigger?

This is absolutely insane where this diary has gone where people are giving up any kind of political solution in favor of just decimating things and starting over. Am I pissed at the oligarchs? Hell yeah. Fighting mad, but I have children that need to live in what remains of the wasteland you all are advocating. I didn't give years of my life to raise them to be extras in some flipping Mad Max movie.

We're supposed to be Democrats here advocating liberal and progressive ideals within our current political system not some ignorant bullies that demand it at the end of a cannon. You people are nuts. Go the hell away and let the adults work this out as they did during the FDR years. It's a slow and painful process not some instant gratification thing or some video game where people mend after their limbs are torn asunder.
