The Door Opens - Update: The Door Closes

Open • Views: 2,084

The glimmering door into the caverns of Lizardia has swung open for a limited time. The ‘Register’ link is at the top of the left sidebar.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky hates sock puppets. He will find you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of vitriol and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 10/2/09 6:58:08 pm:

The door has closed, with 80 hatchlings and 18 sock puppet attempts.

Dear Newbies-

Welcome to LGF! If you need something to help break the commenting ice, how about telling us what brought you to LGF? Always an interesting story. Hope you have fun, just remember to play nice.

Sincerely, Sharmuta

I remember a “goodbye cruel world” cartoon -- an arm coming up out of a toilet bowl, the hand on the flush handle.

Do you provide the proper ... *cough* ... facilities for that, Charles?

5 Killgore Trout  Fri, Oct 2, 2009 5:30:36pm

Also some nice words from John Amato at Crooks and Liars...

I have to give LGF credit. As much as I've feuded with Charles Johnson in the past, he's shown a very cool switch and has exposed a lot of right wing insanity.

59 Sharmuta  Fri, Oct 2, 2009 5:58:16pm

Huh. I didn't realize Vdare's Peter Brimelow was on the front lines of the War on Christmas meme. From Time December 2008:

Before it became part of mainstream conservative punditry, the leading proponent of the War on Christmas was a former magazine writer and editor named Peter Brimelow. A virulent anti-immigration crusader whose views were considered extreme by mainstream conservative journals like National Review, Brimelow founded a website called VDare.com that soon was at the forefront of the fight to sanctify Christmas cheer. Beginning in 1999, Brimelow ran a competition to spotlight offenders in the War on Christmas. The inaugural villain was the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which earned the dubious honor for hosting a holiday party dubbed "A Celebration of Holiday Traditions." The following year, Amazon.com became a target of Brimelow's wrath for subjecting consumers to the nondenominational greeting "Happy Holidays!" (In 2003, VDare was classified as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center for providing a platform for white nationalist viewpoints.)

Some people feel the need to promote a victimhood mentality for political reasons to Christians. A lot of them are the same folks who wish to promote a victimhood mentality to white Americans. Funny that with Peter Brimelow they happen to be one and the same, huh? Imagine my surprise.

Good evening, everyone! Rookies included!

If you're in the high priority group for the H1N1 vaccine, it could pay to call your state health department. I called today to inquire about when they would be available, and was told that I could call the district office and make an appointment to get one. And I don't have to drive to the district office - I can get it done at any health department facility in the state.

Might want to try that, make things go as smoothly as possible for you.

I'm a 42-year old female, small business owner, wife, mother and left of center very normal person. In an earlier lifetime I was a historian. There is more, of course, but this is not a message board, it's a blog with comments.

Hi! Welcome to the catacombs of Denver International Airport!

I was at DIA in May, and said to myself that I'd stop by and say hi to Charles and Stinky - as luck would have it, the traffic was a mess and I made it to the airport with seconds to spare. I had to skip dropping by HQ, and when I got to my gate, they were already boarding!

We had this chat way back when, if you recall.

Modern usage, they are somewhat interchangeable. Certainly the pagan movement has co-opted both symbols and often you see a celtic cross that looks exactly like the Odin cross.

Not at all. The Nazi's "hijacked" the swastika. I've seen it numerous times during my visit in India, where it is still widespread in use (although most of the time a mirror image.) It's been in use since 3000 BC. It's a sacret symbol in Hinduism, equal to the cross and the star of David. (Which is in a way a bit ironic if you ask me.)

Charles makes a solid point, Cato.

I remember travelling to Seoul and being surprised at a PR effort there to revive the swastika ( late 90s). It was a symbol of peace and prosperity that the Nazi's appropriated. the mail Seoul subway station has swastikas everywhere in the tile patterns.

But they can't rehabilitate the symbol and never will in the west. Fascists will always appropriate and exploit symbols.

Hello all,

Well, I've been reading this site for a fairly short time. I only discovered it a couple of weeks ago after stumbling on a positive comment on DKOS. I checked it out and found a place of great interest to me. I get tired of the prattle at most politically oriented web sites as too much of it is simply everyone believing the same thing while patting each other on the back. Somehow I don't thing that is the case here... That and intelligent thought & conversation from a more conservative perspective than my own is all too hard to find these days. Thank you for that, Charles.

Quick description:
Democratic Socialist economically, old time liberal socially, High Church Anglo-Catholic Episcopalian - radical theologically; reactionary liturgically, Gun nut, Hunter, Film photographer, US Army Vet, married with one child - he's 7 years old and was adopted from Vietnam.

I hope I can offer some thoughts that might be occasionally of interest to the rest here.

William

re: #165 William of Orange

Right! As a sanskrit symbol, it symbolizes the continued cycle of life. What I'm guessing albusteve was seeing was a backwards swastika. Actually since the sanskrit symbol came first, the swastika is the backward one.

I have a Persian rug that's over a hundred years old and it's from one of the rural, tribal parts of Persia, looks almost American Indian in its linear simplicity, not the typical floral/ornate patterns you think of... the last time I had it cleaned, I noticed that one of the borders is composed of what has to be the same type of symbol as a swastika. Fortunately it doesn't really stand out from the pattern, but still... that symbol must have been around a long time in another form.

re: #174 karmic_inquisitor

Charles makes a solid point, Cato.

I remember travelling to Seoul and being surprised at a PR effort there to revive the swastika ( late 90s). It was a symbol of peace and prosperity that the Nazi's appropriated. the mail Seoul subway station has swastikas everywhere in the tile patterns.

Not to be confused with the backward swastikas, which are the symbols on buddhist temples in Korea.

But they can't rehabilitate the symbol and never will in the west. Fascists will always appropriate and exploit symbols.

Yep. I for one rather wish that the confederate battle emblem could somehow be rehabilitated, as a symbol of mere regional pride. But, such efforts are definitely uphill, and probably foredoomed.

I understand being pissed off about it, but you should direct your anger at the neo-Nazis who use the symbol, not at me for pointing it out.

I'm not angry at you. I think you're exaggerating the extent to which the Celtic cross in its usual form has been co-opted by the neo-fascists. It's far to Cathol-icky for them.

Due to the nature of my work, I'm not connected to internet the whole week. Is there some kind of posting quota to justify my membership? Regularly I only spend a significant ammount of time on a PC in the weekend.

(Haven't tested a phone connection yet so maybe weekdays are not that much of a problem.)

Clarify please.

You can post as much or as little as you want. There's no quota. But if you've followed the blog at all, you'll know there's certain stuff that isn't tolerated.

I've been here quite some time. I'm one of those damn liberals you hear tell about :p And I certainly don't agree with many people here, but they tolerate me and some I think actually like me! I like them anyway. Well most!

The problem is that if one believes that government can never be effective, one has no motivation to make it effective. Which explains any number of cloister flocks that occurred during the Bush years /

That's not to say that government can solve every problem but that there are problems that cannot be solved by private enterprise because the payoffs are too far into the future to be attractive.

To me government should be focused on the long range thinking that private enterprise doesn't tend to do all that much.

Any number of things we enjoy today were created by the government without a profit motive and then turned into tremendous opportunities. Without ARPANET, for example, I doubt any of us would be having this conversation in this venue. I was able to drive cross country to see my parents in a few hours because of the interstate highway system. Those are examples where government is able to be effective.

I think what's confusing there is that some registered users appear to be inactive... that is, to have registered a screen name and subsequently only logged in occasionally to cause trouble... for example, when poster ' registered since 2007, three comments' suddenly starts showing up in a bad mood, you have to figure they had tucked that name away to be used in the even of their blogdeath (banning). It doesn't mean that you have to post a certain number of times or face consequences.

Uh...I'm celticdragon.

Disgruntled Republican...annoyed with know nothing populism and anti intellectualism. Geology major at an up scale liberal arts college (Guilford College in Greensboro, NC as an adult CCE student. I have no patience with Young Earther Creationist types. I play Celtic Harp and I compete in Scottish Harp events at the Grandfather Mountain Highland games. I love Celtic Music (Altan, Albannach, Deanta, Cherich The Ladies, The Chieftens). I am also a Revolutionary War re-enactor.

I am also a trans-gendered woman...which doesn't always go well with being a Republican when the party goes into full out GOD HATES FAGS mode.

*sigh*

I'm still married to my wife, and we have a 9 year old son. I used to be a commercial aircraft mechanic until I got injured rather badly, so I am finishing the aforementioned geology degree.

Questions?

How about posting a YouTube video of your harp playing, or your Revolutionary War re-enacting? Have you been in any Battles of King's Mountain?

Celtic Cross

Odin's Cross

You can see that there is some confusion about is as I saw at least one that appeared in both searches. Also noticed that LGF returned a hit on the second one.

Of the 54 images on the first three pages of your "Odin's Cross" search, there are five that fit my definition of a Celtic cross.

Seems the "interchangeability" is not so great as some might claim. In my opinion the German ban is bad law.

Wow!

Thank you so much for welcomes! I am a little bit overwhelmed. :)

MandyManners and Marjorie...

I have supported the Log Cabin Republicans and even tried to help start a local group here in Greensboro. We didn't really get off the ground. Right now, I feel so estranged from the party that I am not interested in helping at all until we get some semblance of sanity back into the discourse. Honestly, this last election was the first time I have ever voted for a Democrat for higher office, and I have been a Republican since 1985. I took a lot to alienate me...and the incompetence, mendacity and inability to actually govern over the past 8 years convinced me that something had to be done. I couldn't just be a consistent enabler in an abused spouse relationship...which was what my party affiliation was beginning to feel like. Not that I am happy with Obama in many respects...but Christ in Heaven! It at least feels like we have adults back in charge even if I think they were insane for canceling the F22 (I tend to write about defense matters)

Lessee...shaving face and wearing ties...or shaving legs and wearing hose...

They are both annoying. I tend to wear skirt suits since I dislike the idea of forty something year old people trying to dress like 18 year olds. If you look professional, you get taken seriously; so I shave the legs and wear hose. It's still a bother, though.

Can't argue with your two examples--though note how nothing happened with ARPANET UNTIL it was handed over to private hands.

I agree that government should focus on things that individuals and the private sector cannot, however noting its level of competence, I would say it's best to keep those areas to as few areas as possible.

Using Obama's post office example--heh, heh--there was a time when it was necessary. But the postal service has always been inefficient. Now that private companies can do profitably what the post office fails to do well, we can probably do away with it. But there is another truism of government--like many areas of government that are no longer, or never have been, effective, it will never die.

I think it works both ways. They both have their own special brands of idiocy. Private enterprise tends to only look short term and has a tendency to subsume the greater good for the immediate reward. Government tends to be too bureaucratic and lose sight of unintended consequences.

I see the world as being much grayer than most, in that I think pragmatism, looking at both long and short range impact is the best approach, but you rarely get that in government or business.

Much of my disgust with the right at this time is that they seem to be belief driven to the exclusion of any tangible, objective reality that validates what they believe to be true. If there is a conflict then reality must be wrong.

I took my dachshund outside to go to the bathroom a short time ago. There we were at the edge of my woods peeing on a tree. (our rare bonding ritual) When all of a sudden I heard a loud shuffling in the woods, it was more of a... sweeping though. A few seconds later followed ear piercing screams coming from the same direction. It sounded exactly like a woman screaming and stumbling in the woods!

I looked down at Rudy and he was looking up at me with his WTF? expression. We looked like two bumbling idiots running for my back door. I tripped over him once and he squealed, rolled and kept on trucking. The screaming continued even after we made it into my house.

I kept watching out my window waiting to see who or what it was. The screaming stopped and about 10 minutes later I saw a big red fox run across my lawn and into the woods on the other side. I'd always heard that red foxes communicate by screaming but I've never heard one.

OT: to back up my previous post concerning banks having problems, here is a clip from a Bloomberg article yesterday:

Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- There was a stunning omission from the government's latest list of "problem" banks, which ran to 416 lenders, a 15-year high, as of June 30. One outfit not on the list was Georgian Bank, the second-largest Atlanta-based bank, which supposedly had plenty of capital.

It failed last week.

Georgian's clean-up will be unusually costly. The book value of Georgian's assets was $2 billion as of July 24, about the same as the bank's deposit liabilities, according to a Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. press release. The FDIC estimates the collapse will cost its insurance fund $892 million, or 45 percent of the bank's assets. That percentage was almost double the average for this year's 95 U.S. bank failures, and it was the highest among the 10 largest ones.

Overall, I'm a social liberal, a economic conservative, and a political moderate, which means that I am unaffiliated with any political party.

I rediscovered LGF a few months ago and have been hooked ever since! Thanks for having me here...

Will do.

Sometimes he does have some popular views which are really talking sense. But that is quit a lot balanced out by the stupidity of other balloons he lets loose. Last gem he issued was a proposal to tax headscarfs. (Indeed, headgear often worn by Muslim women.)

His second in command in the chamber was caught drunk in a cafe near parliament. Alledgedly he punched a bartender but that is still in debate. At least he admitted he had a drinking problem.

Fascists will always appropriate and exploit symbols.

Well, if they want to appropriate the Celtic cross to the point where they can say they own it, they are going to have to go through me and a lot of Irish, Welsh and Scots first.

They can have that stumpy Odin thing. The reason they like it is it's symmetrical and if you add on four ninety-degree appendages, you have a swastika. With the true Celtic cross, not so much.

re: #338 jvic

I always assumed they viewed it as an Aryan symbol. Incorrectly?

Interesting article on the subject from 2005.

Hindus reclaim their symbol of life

The swastika is a 5,000-year-old symbol that has been used for centuries by Hindus, Buddhists and many other traditions to denote good luck, but because of the Nazis it has come to symbolise hate, anti-Semitism, violence, death and murder. The campaign, announced today, comes after members of the European Parliament called for a Europe-wide ban on the symbol after Prince Harry wore a swastika armband to a fancy dress party.

...

Hindus use the right-facing version of the swastika, meaning “sun”, as jewellery or on doorways and buildings to bring good fortune. This was the version adopted by the Nazi Party in 1920 at Salzburg.

It is thought that Allied wartime propaganda is responsible for the false belief that at Hitler’s insistence the swastika was later reversed to the left-facing version, meaning “death” in Hindu mythology.

That last bit is what I thought.

I would suspect that most people would be screaming to have the post office back in short order. Think of how much yelling went on when the PO floated a trial balloon about discontinuing Saturday service?

They scream because they have no other choice. I can stop by a Kinkos or (former) Mailbox Etc on a Saturday and conduct my business with them. The reason they want to drop Saturdays is that people are finding ways to do business without the post office and they are losing money faster than ever.

I also think there might be more unintended consequences in that the cost of mailing something would start reflecting where it was being mailed. It's costs a lot more to deliver mail to rural america than it does urban america, in that you are moving fewer pieces at one time.

What's wrong with charging more for delivering to more expensive places? I conveniently receive mail every day that I check every couple weeks--I'm a bit lazy that way. Have I ever received anything by mail that I couldn't wait for, or that I couldn't deal with electronically (in the past few years, anyway)? If you live out in the sticks, I bet you have to drive to town once a week to pick up your groceries. Why not pick up your mail at the in town PO box at the same time?

So under what model would private enterprise be able to provide service at a price that wouldn't have a severely negative impact on the economy?

You assume the post office has anything to do with the economy these days. It no longer does.

OK Newbies- here are some search tips to help you learn more about LGF and issues we discuss around here:

Tag Storm
TagViewer

These you can find under the flippy triangle on the upper left side bar under Tools/Info.

There is also the Search in the upper right when you click "more options".

LGF is a great resource for a lot of various issues we all hold near and dear to our Liberty Lovin' Hearts.

psst, did y' tell'm about th' COOKBOOK?!

re: #368 marjoriemoon

Heh. A key part of the culture wars is battling over who has the right to use a word to mean what. I see it's not restricted to the USA.

Btw, it's my impression that theocratic Indian society was developed by Dravidians who are related to Australian aborigines. The "Aryans" were light-skinned conquerors who installed themselves in the top castes. (It always seemed weird that the Shah reminded me of Krishnamurti.)

It's also my impression that the foregoing interpretation of history is being revisited.

Of the 54 images on the first three pages of your "Odin's Cross" search, there are five that fit my definition of a Celtic cross.

Seems the "interchangeability" is not so great as some might claim. In my opinion the German ban is bad law.

You may be technically correct concerning the distinguishing features, but with all due respect that is entirely besides the point. The appropriation and use of the Odin's and Celtic crosses by neo-nazis has been discussed and documented here before, and it is the fact of such usage which renders the display of the Odin's and Celtic crosses problematic. IIRC of particular concern has been the use of these as avatars here in the past, which not only upset lizards but also risked harm to the good image of this site.

The draft in a can or bottle really has to be served very cold, to get the full benefit of the widget. The extra stout becomes quite intolerable to me as the temperature rises above about 15 centigrade. When I was an undergraduate, there was even a Guinness XXX which was like extra stout with all the water turned into alcohol and several times more bitter. A friend of mine described it as "weasel's piss strained through a mouldy old balaclava helmet". Oddly enough, it tasted just like that.

I think that's an assertion I'd have to see actual evidence for other than your say so.

Hey, I did mention it like three times ;-) Well, I have always wanted to be a ship's captain since I read about the Titanic at age five(I know, I know). Sorry, but Hindus need to find a new symbol. The swastika is never going to be a symbol of anything but the Third Reich, and I have absolutely no sympathy for attempts to "reclaim" it.

Wrt to its use in Western countries, I completely agree. Hadn't meant to imply otherwise.

I don't know how common it was in India, or how integral it is to Hinduism. If it were revived as a smartass expression of "anticolonialism" or in the spirit of "Piss Chr*st" or other passive aggressiveness, I'd be furious. Up to and including boycotts and trade wars. To put it mildly, I do not appreciate Falun Gong using it and then seeking support in the West.

Given the blood and horror soaked into the symbol, I hope that nonWesterners have the sensitivity to refrain from it in their own countries.

My question is what experience had you had to verify that he was right?

I always wonder that when somebody says "This tastes like shit!" How do they know?

Of course when my wife says she feels like shit I offer to go to the store and get her some...I have to duck a lot at my house.

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.

Helllooo...just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year: that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!

So I told him Helllooo... It's been a year...they should have already paid for themselves!

There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

They have nothing better to do, perhaps? I have no idea. I came out of the Libertarian Goldwater "Sagebrush Rebellion" branch of the Republican Party. California, Arizona and Nevada. Leave my land alone, leave my guns alone and leave ME alone!

The social conservatives grabbed the reins, and...wtf??!

Now we have busybody moralizing scolds who want to use the coercive power of the government to FORCE their social and religious dogmas on everybody because THEY KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR ALL OF US!

When nanny state moral coercion proceeds under the guise of "conservatism", then the very term 'conservative' has ceased to have any meaning. Hence, I no longer call myself a conservative.

Print media-- going away fast...should just go online. It's cheaper than print. Why subsidize wasting all that paper/killing all those trees?

Mail order companies/Ebay--can still deliver via UPS or Fed Ex.

The USPS is an outmoded, expensive, and unnecessary organization that has outlived its usefulness. It encourages the wasting of paper, energy, and taxes. Shouldn't left leaning folks like the idea of reducing paper, saving energy, and reducing cutting of forests? The point of the postal service was to ensure communication for our country when modern means did not exist. We have other ways of doing that without them now.

Hey, Cato the Elder, what's up with that?

I understand that you don't like the fact the Celtic cross has been appropriated by neo-Nazis, but why would you go back and down-ding my comments for pointing it out?

I'm not the enemy. The neo-Nazis who stole your beloved symbol are the enemy. Take it up with them.

I downdinged one comment in which you flatly state that "The Celtic Cross is a neo-Nazi symbol."

That is at best a gross oversimplification of the real state of affairs. As I have been trying to point out.

If I were to change my avatar to this image with a statement that "this is an Irish Celtic cross from a Catholic cemetery and has nothing to do with fascism", would that be offensive?

Mail order companies/Ebay--can still deliver via UPS or Fed Ex.

The USPS is an outmoded, expensive, and unnecessary organization that has outlived its usefulness. It encourages the wasting of paper, energy, and taxes. Shouldn't left leaning folks like the idea of reducing paper, saving energy, and reducing cutting of forests? The point of the postal service was to ensure communication for our country when modern means did not exist. We have other ways of doing that without them now.

As long as people read in the bathroom, magazines will be printed on paper :)

In all fairness, I don't think you've proved your assertion by any means. You have certainly shown why you think the post office could be closed, but I don't think you can currently prove that closing the Post Office would have zero effect on the economy, thus it stands to reason that your assertion is an exaggeration.

Humf!

Have you ever watched Yojimbo? (Kurosawa. Toshiro Mifune.)

It opens with a farmer's son running off, screaming back at his father, "a quick exciting life for me!"

At the end, Sanjuro (Mifune) spares the kid's life, telling him to go back home ... that the simple/boring life is best.

/mind you, it's not that there's anything transcendental about "boring"

That's one of the reasons I like being a merchie. One time out, you could be on a Banana Boat milk run from Honduras to Galveston, another you could be making a container ship run to Rotterdam across the North Atlantic in winter. Could be boring or pant-shittingly scary.

You're not being rude. If the USPS goes away, or mail delivery is privatized, the written form of communication won't disappear. We'll just stop subsidizing the cost of direct mail to people when there are more economical ways for those marketers to get to their customers.

I don't assume that nothing will replace it. I would likewise be ok with taking away their monopoly and allowing competition by the two private carriers.

We have two private companies that compete with each other for carrier business. Why not let them compete with the USPS, and completely take the USPS off the federal books?

The flounce is a virtual upskirt, heave-ho, giving of the finger, when people decide to leave / get kicked out / renounce their membership here. They usually write something unusually snotty, or try to be extra clever before they tell Charles and everyone here how unbearable it is. Some go into multiple dying swan paragraphs, and usually their punctuation and spelling falls apart at approximately the same rate they lose consciousness. It's kind of personal for each one, the flourish they decide to add to the experience. Some are hostile, some play victim, some draw it out as long as possible (tantric flouncing).

Ah, so quick to call it a "scandal"? There isn't enough info out there to really make such a judgment. When did the indiscretions occur? (Before or after he was married? in case that is what you are referring to, with "scandal.") How many female employees were involved? (we know it was plural, but that could mean 2 not necessarily 20, or 200.) As far as has been reported by the corporation, there have been no complaints filed against him for harassment.

I am enough of a cynic to wonder "why now?". Why not 2 years ago, or5 years ago. In fact, the person who was arrested for the extortion attempt is someone who just got dumped by his girlfriend a few weeks ago and it turns out she was one of the women involved with Letterman. Could it possibly be a bit of retaliation?

For me...I will withhold my final judgment until I know more. Until then, it really doesn't matter because I don't watch him on TV anyway.

I already responded to this in 587, but I think the guiding principal needs to be perhaps allowing the other services to compete, but requiring them to provide the same level of service. Otherwise you run the risk of them cherry picking business from the government entity.

UPS already does this by offering UPS Basic (Fed Ex has a program called Smart Post). They basically deliver the package to the destination city then drop it off for the USPS to deliver. This is mostly being done to offset the price advantage the USPS has in packages under 5 pounds.

Agreed on the principle of fair competition.

Tell me, what do you think about the left's argument that health care run by the government is necessary to provide insurance companies "competition"?

I think it's hooey for a few basic reasons:
1. they could increase competition by allowing interstate commerce for health insurance.
2. without #1, the government will be the largest insurer in the country by virtue of having a service run in all 50 states instead of only just one. In such a scenario, private companies could never compete and the government could set prices.
3. even without #1, government has the power to regulate, and through the threat of regulation, would have effective control over the market.

Symbols are notoriously easier to co-opt and ruin than to establish. The Nazis were particularly good with that. Not just the swastika. The Iron Cross has become another Nazi symbol, and yet it existed as a medal for courage in the German military before Hitler's time (and, sadly, he was given one in WWI). It was first established in 1813, apparently.

Once a symbol or a name has been ruined, there's usually no reclaiming it. Consider "skinheads": the original groups were anti-fascist gangs, but nowadays most people will immediately associate "skinhead" with Neo-nazi morons.

Interestingly, the decision by Angela Merkel to engage the Taliban has brought the Iron Cross back into use as a combat decoration. While currently known as the Cross of Heroism, it is essentially the same Iron Cross First Class.

re: #378 John Neverbend

Since I studied medieval history too, it all sort of overlaps, but basically the early modern period is around 1450 or so to 1750 or so. The dates are less relevant than the major movements that happened (i.e. Renaissance in the beginning and the beginning of the modern nation-states toward the end of the period).

Dante

I don't doubt it. There seems to be no end to religious symbols these pieces of garbage won't bastardize.

I agree. I am in general agreement with Cato since the Celtic knot is an important part of Celtic religious expression and mysticism (check out the Book of Kells!). I do not want to cede part of my cultural heritage to the brownshirts.

You can use the "quote" and "reply" functions on a person's comment box.
If you want to "quote" Dante and write your response after quoting him, use "quote". If you want to respond without quoting his post, use "reply".
And either way, there will be a link back to the person's post so that whoever wants to track back the conversation can do so easily.

Thanos,

Thank you. That is not a Celtic cross as I define it. It is an Odin's cross, and I recognize it for the fascist/Nazi symbol it has become. This is a Celtic cross. I'm glad to see Germany hasn't banned it, though since the publication you link to is from 2006, that may have changed.

If the distinction between Celtic and Odin's could be maintained in these discussions, we might be better able to sort it all out.

LOL! The nominative singular form is what is used in the game universe, so that is what we are stuck with. I think the incorrect Latin grammar has been pointed out before, but you can always say that Latin isn't quite the same 40, 000 years from now ;)

I'm quite aware of the difference between Celtic Cross as they appear on graves, Odin's cross, high cross and berkenkruis. I did a lot of research on it back in the day. Odin's cross typically doesn't have arms extended past the circle. ADL disagrees with you.
[Link: www.adl.org...]

Typical, true Celtic Crosses such as you see on graves have tips wider than the section that crosses in the middle, and typically has ornate celtic knots all over the arms.
A search on images will show you some true Celtic crosses, and the type that Stormfront prefers. If you want to be a purist then the Stormfront logo is a stylized celtic cross. Real Odin's crosses don't have arms crossing past the bound of the circle. We went through this argument in detail several times back when we were drubbing VB, Gates of Vienna.
Indeed, I challenged Baron to wear one one of the Stormfront Celtic cross logos on a tee shirt to church during that period, he never took me up on it.

Point of interest: The squiggly thing is the German Paragraphenzeichen or "paragraph sign", signifying a paragraph (law) in a legal code. So the images thus marked fall under the law being discussed. In English it's called a section sign.

It does, actually. In retrospect, it shouldn't.

Although, I meant the few remaining Germans who want to see the return of the Kaiser. The ones who still haven't gotten over Versailles(not to say that it wasn't a POS revenge wank treaty). I think I read somewhere that Wilhelm did not like Hitler, or the direction he took Germany.

If by "wide base" you mean the lower extremity being longer than the other three, then yes. That is for me one of the defining characteristics of the Celtic cross. I see the ones with equal protrusions all round as being something else. This is what I wear, and have done for years. You can see that the top protrudes higher than the sides, as well.

This is what I have always thought of as a Celtic cross. Perhaps the distinction is between the Christian Celtic cross and the pagan (whether pre-Christian or contemporary pagan) version. No matter. If I were a pagan I'd be just as pissed at the Nazis for stealing my symbol.

But you can see why I don't think anyone could confuse what I wear with a Nazi token.

Hello everyone,

Over the years I've dropped by here on rare occasion to get a read on the opposition...

Recently I followed a link (Sullivan, I think?) mentioning Charles' shift and included a good CJ quote. I even composed a blogpost in my head about it, but since I couldn't get in to comment here I decided to shelve it.

I've been back a few times since and what's happening here is very reminiscent of John Cole, circa-Terry Schiavo. I was a regular commenter at Balloon Juice well before then, but that enlightenment period for him was must-see tv. Watching John get to the point he is at now, since then, has been quite a ride.

When a commenter at Balloon Juice (fellow hatchling Gen Stuck) noted that the registration door was open, I jumped.

I'm not an I-told-you-so kind of guy, and I'm not here to gloat. If anything I'm here to see who walks out of the smoke on the right, and welcome them back to civilization—things work better for everyone with honest brokers on all sides.

I don't expect to agree with many of you on matters other than acknowledging right-wing fringe FAIL, as I am a pretty obstinate liberal, but I always up for a good debate/argument.

Cheers,
Mr Furious

Back when China's persecution of it was news, I clicked around regarding Falun Gong. On the surface it looked wholesome, but ultimately I was left uneasy. After ten years or so, I can't be specific, but your impression is consistent with mine.

Direct Marketing--wouldn't mind if they went away. These SOBs account for most of my mail anyway--mail I don't want. They are about the only thing keeping the USPS afloat these days. That and the taxpayers.

Yeah, and if you live in Hawaii, Fed-Ex and UPS will be kind enough to offer you 2nd Day Air (which takes 3) as the cheapest option when you order something from the mainland. The smallest item will cost me $24.00 through them.

The USPS will only charge me a few bucks for Pritority Mail.
